The only person who can stop Rick Perry is Rick Perry

John Ellis, who among many other things is a Republican political analyst, a blogger and a cousin to former President George W. Bush, nails the state of the GOP presidential race in a Business Insider column:

The Republican “establishment,” such as it is, is quickly coming to the realization that the 2012 GOP presidential nomination is Texas Governor Rick Perry’s to lose.

That establishment would prefer someone more electable, someone more like, say, Mitt Romney. But as Ellis points out, Romney is the guy that most Republican voters will choose only if they have no other viable choice:

“Romney’s problem is four-fold: he’s politically “fungible” (to put it politely), he’s from the wrong region of the country (New England), he’s of the wrong religion (Mormonism) and he’s too closely identified with Wall Street (Bain Capital). The Republican base would prefer to nominate a strong conservative, evangelical Christian from the Sunbelt who, at the least, shares their disdain for Wall Street’s reckless stewardship of the nation’s financial system.”

Know anybody like that?

Ellis predicts that after Labor Day, the GOP establishment will launch “a sustained negative campaign to destroy Perry with the party’s base.” We’ve already seen hints of that from Karl Rove, among others. Absent some major revelation, however, that effort isn’t likely to work. Perry’s persona and background align so closely with the desires of the GOP base that it will be very difficult to drive a wedge between them. If Perry can prove that he can perform on the national stage, the nomination is all but his and there’s nothing Romney can do about it.

And as Ellis points out, Perry will get that opportunity very quickly.

“Once Labor Day has passed, there will be five debates, in quick succession, on the GOP presidential candidates’ calendars. These will be important tests for Perry. If at the end of two or three, it’s clear that he’s every bit the equal of Mitt Romney on matters of policy and politics, then the Perry juggernaut becomes all but unstoppable. Romney’s “I’m the only electable one” argument will vanish and the party’s base will nominate one of their own. If Perry stumbles badly in the debates, Romney’s campaign gets a second wind.”

I agree wholeheartedly. The only person who can snatch the nomination out of Rick Perry’s hands is Rick Perry himself.

Brosephus: I don’t get the rims thing. What makes oversized rims so appealing? On smaller cars it increases drag on the vehicle raising it off the ground like that, and the tires themselves are rather thin and have to be replaced more frequently.

I think the rim thing now is the same as the gold chain thing was in the 80’s. It’s all about size, the bigger they are, the more people fawn over them.

I don’t think many people stop to realize how much those rims negatively affect their cars. When you have heavier wheels on a vehicle than what was originally designed, it does many things to the mechanics of the car itself. First, brakes wear out faster because it takes more brakes to stop the inertia of heavier wheels. The transmission has the potential to wear out faster because of the heavier load placed on it. The speedometer has to be recalibrated because of the larger diameter of the wheel. The suspension of the vehicle takes a beating because it works much harder because of the loss of cushioning effect from the tires.

I’ve never put aftermarket rims on any vehicle I’ve ever owned. If I did, they would be as closely matched to the original specifications in relation to diameter, weight, and offset as possible to keep my car from premature breakdown. Unless it’s a car that I’m using for competition to earn prize money or something I’m restoring just for show, I think the aftermarket rim industry is a complete waste of money.

A. I don’t think anyone in this country has to STFU. This is America with that free speech thing.
B. I think black americans and politicians have the right to petition, lobby, harass, whatever, the POTUS on their issues no matter whether the sitting president is white purple blue green or any other color.

In short, I disagree with parts of your previous statement. Yes, the POTUS has to represent everyone and look out for our collective interests, not one interest over another. But that doesn’t mean he can’t do things to help out minorities.

Off topic:

For today’s edition of headlines that reek of “No Sh*t Sherlock”, I present GOP Presidential candidate, Mitt Romney…

Mitt Romney: U.S. near ‘profound economic misery’
http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/mitt-romney-us-near-profound-economic-misery/2011/08/30/gIQAocHrpJ_story_1.html

While trying to blame Obama for America’s economic woes, if elected, Romney will not fare much better. There’s pretty much nothing the government can do to help our economy right now. With the GOP firmly entrenched in not increasing taxes or spending, we’re dependent on the private sector to do things that would feed demand in order to get the economy going again.

from that link:

Romney criticized Obama’s plan to cut military spending by $400 billion over the next 12 years, as well as a budget trigger established in the debt deal reached this summer that could result in defense spending being cut by $850 billion.

Romney also talked about the “enormous waste” he says is in the Pentagon budget.

“As a conservative businessman who spent most his life in the private sector, I look at that kind of inefficiency and bloat and I say, ‘Let me at it,’ ” Romney said. “I will slice billions of dollars in waste and inefficiency and bureaucracy from the defense budget. And I’ll use the money we save for modern ships and planes, and for more troops. And I’ll spend it to ensure that veterans have the care they deserve.”

Only in America can you criticize somebody for doing something, and in the next breath, state that you will do the same damn thing. When will primary voters in both parties hold their candidates responsible for speaking the truth. I guess this is a case of Romney being against defense cuts before he’s for them.

If it’s not for show competition, I wonder myself. In the grand scheme of things though, it’s private sector consumption which helps the economy. Frivolous spending is still considered consumption when it comes to GDP. :)

If an elected official claims to speak for me just because we share the same skin color, then they DO need to STFU as they do not speak for me just because of that. If they want to speak on THEIR behalf, they have all the right in the world to do so. However, if I didn’t vote for them to speak for me, they don’t have the right to claim to do so.

As far as helping out minorities, as soon as Obama does the first thing to aid Blacks, he’ll be tarred, feathered, drawn, and quartered by the GOP. You and others would join in at the first opportunity to say, “I told you so” that he would be the “Blacks first” president. I can only speak for myself, but I do not wish to hear that sh*t at all.

Most every Democratic Presidential candidate will pull about 90% of the Black vote. Until the GOP puts forth a candidate that appeals to the needs of the Black community instead of the opposite, it will remain that way. Perception is a very powerful thing.

Bro 3:16 – when you help the poor, you’re also helping a lot of minorities. You don’t have to have a (reverse) racist type of agenda to help those who are disadvantaged. You just have to do things to help the poor, regardless of race, creed, or color.

And for the record, I’d say Obama has done that in spades. As a matter of fact, there’s a point of diminishing returns. And I think we’ve reached it on unemployment benefits, as well as food stamps (perhaps). In contrast, he has done nothing to revamp Medicaid, which is desperate need of redesign.

If popular rhetoric was based in racial overtones, he’d try to ride that into office. He’s been riding the anti-DC sentiment while accepting fed money and using it to his advantage while Gov of TX. Time will reveal whether he harbors any bigotries or not.

That’s why I don’t agree with the calls from the Black community castigating Obama for not helping Blacks. Obama should not have to do anything specifically to aid Blacks. If he’s doing something to aid the poor, then the Black community that really needs the help will still be helped. Others need to get off their asses and do for themselves instead of waiting on someone to do something for them.

The Black community, as a whole, has a lot of spending power. It’s evident in the sales of shoes, rims, and other things. If the Black community pooled resources in the same manner that other communities have done and continue to do, there would be much less need for Obama to do anything.

Adam 3:30 – you guys love to eat sand.

Democrats have stopped block granting Medicaid every step of the way. Block grants would result in significantly improving the allocation of funds to help more people better. In addition, it would result in some program and policy experimentation which would be hugely helpful.

How do you turkeys think the jobs program idea that Obama may propose shortly. It is all based on Georgia Works. GA Works (while not a bad idea, but I’m not an expert) came about in violation of federal law. A Democrat chose to say FU to federal law and did it anyway. I think its a pretty good idea. State experimentation with policy is part of the beauty of this country, but the Feds stamp it out all the time. Oy, libs will never learn.

Blacks have suffered in this economy — they are the last hired and first fired, OR as in most cases, no matter what their seniority is they are let go. However, in the Atlanta area, more black-owned businesses have been started since the recession begun. Blacks have not waited for corporate america to save them, they’ve started saving themselves.

Bro “pooled resources”

Though I don’t know what that’s about. I think the poor (and minorities who are poor) are suffering because of education issues (which have a long history behind them), not because of pooled resources issues.

Well, I learned something here today. Brocephus is one of Those People! I always thought he was White. At least his posts were almost as good as White posts. Now I got to rethink alot of things about him and what he says. At the very least Bookman ought to make posters say if they’re White or Those People. That way we’d know which ones to skip without reading them. And you can tell I’m White. I make it very clear in my blog name I’m a Republican.
