“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.”

RW, “pandering”? c’mon, I don’t care if she was campaigning at a Flat Earth Society convention. you know what I find most interesting about these snake jugglers? they are all quick to tell you that their god is all powerful, ominipotent, etc; and that the human mind cannot possibly understand god’s wisdom; and yet, they never pass up a chance to “speak for god” when it serves a political purpose. I mean, let’s be honest (and christian). it’s been almost two decades since I juggled a snake, but I seem to recall that after the Noah’s Ark thing; god assured us that he would not use a flood to get our attention. ergo, I’ll conced the earthquake could have been a warning (although my god is Mother Nature, with caps), but seems to me Bachman’s god took the hurricane bullet out of the gun two thousand or so years ago. again, seems to me, when some “tin foil hat” loonlike Bachman professes to speak for god or “know” why god does what he does, it is more blasphemy than faith.

I’ve been of the opinion that every time somebody harps on the “shovel ready jobs” meme and/or other rhetoric, Mother Nature provides another opportunity for those jobs. There’s another wave coming off the coast of Africa, so Eric Cantor will get his chance to offset some additional cuts. At some point, people will begin to hold ALL elected officials responsible for the crap that comes out their mouths.

does anyone remember the story (don’t know if it is true) about how Columbus or one of the other explorers pulled a fast one on the locals by telling them he had the power to make the moon disappear? European scientists were ahead of the “dirt worshippers” when it came to astronomy and mapping the solar system (which ironically got some excommunicated, but I digress). so, in order to attain political leverage (control) Columbus presented himself as a de facto demigod. same with Bachman, Robertson, Huckabee, the late Falwell; et al. There were 4262 earthquakes in the US in 1992, 3618 in 2008, 8493 in 2010 and 2879 so far this year as of 8.19.2011 per the USGS. I guess if we interpret the data correctly (and I am sure that Doggone and a few others will back up the analysis) then we know that God is most upset when Tea Party candidates are elected. Perhaps its the fault of the witches?

As for Eric Cantor’s “cut to spend on disaster relief,” I say we give him his wish. For every dollar we spend in his district on disaster relief, we take a dollar from something else being distributed to his district. If that takes withholding social security checks and medicare payments for people ONLY in his district, then so be it. They can start getting regular payments when they pay the government back for the assistance they received in that district.

Had an interesting experience yesterday (kinda fits in with the topic). My wife received an email from a friend of her’s who’s a member of the Latter-day Saint church. They were taking part in an interfaith outreach with the local Muslim community with the ending of that day’s Ramadan fast. We went. It is a small community, there were a few guests. They were very open, very gracious. Invited everyone in for prayers, then outside for their break the fast meal (wonderful food). I sat at a table with a petroleum engineer who’d taught at U of Oklahoma, Colorado School of Mines and Technology and a university in Ohio. Another guy was a CPA. Sat next to the imam.

They were open about their faith – I took away a lot of the same concerns as people of faith anywhere have. How to keep kids centered, true to their communities. How do they bring back those who’ve left How to engage those who come to America who want to keep one foot in their faith and another in the secular experience. Their overriding emphasis on giving, not taking and doing works of charity.

I asked if they’d been to other religious groups. Answer was LDS had invited them to several – youth programs, worship services, that sort of stuff. They’d attended. I asked who had responded to their invitations. Imam said the small independent church next door and the LDS. Said no one else had accepted their offers.

End of the day, it was all about understanding and acceptance. Theirs of the nonIslamic community and the nonIslamic community of them. It was a great way to spend a Sunday.

We understand Perry and Bachmann sometimes get carried away when speaking to their base, but I want to know why I should vote for Obama over someone who occaisionally says something I think is wrong. Does the fact that Perry or Bachmann have a different perception of God than I do make them less qualified for being president? How does that translate into how they would handle the economy, and could they do a better jobthan President Obama?

Yes. You need to take a closer look. They want to make the country a theocracy. Whether or not they will be successful is indeterminate, but since most of us seem to believe so strongly in what the President wants (unless it’s Obama)….

Trust this: they won’t hesitate to spend on wars and outlawing abortion and running up the deficit even more by removing laws that have been designed to cut costs while remaining responsible. Their goal isn’t to spend less, it’s to TAX less, and that’s only looking at the monetary side.

Have you ever heard Obama speak to a predominately black audience? And I say “so what” to that just as I say “so what” to this.

Electing politicians who sound good hasn’t served us very well. I’m more interested in their experience and their record. I’ve heard what Obama has to say and I’ve seen what he can do, at least up to this point. That carries a lot more weight than what any politician says or how they say it at a stump speech in front of their base.

I agree with her positions on Global Warming, the Wall Street bailout, Fannie and Freddie Mac (she advocates breaking them up), oil and gas exploration (she favors expanding), and other issues.

She is not my ideal candidate, and don’t think she will get the nomination, but I think she, Perry, or Romney will be better than Obama. I know you don’t agree and that is fine, but I would rather discuss these and other issues rather than cherry-picked comments from a stump speech to her base. Since there are virtually no successes that Jay can write about concerning Obama, this is all he is left with. I don’t envy his position.

That’s their unspoken hope. Ask them, point-blank, if they think that a discontented Democrat who is unhappy with Obama is going to vote Republican next time. You’ll see lots of hemming and hawing, but it’s pretty clearly what they hope for.

Back on topic, though — I think everyone’s missing something. IMO, Bachmann said this (and the other crazy stuff she said last week) in order to get the spotlight OFF Perry and ONTO herself. She’s trying to get the spotlight back again. And that’s about it.

No (see my 9:15). But being involved in running a business certainly doesn’t hurt. I believe Obama has had a rather sheltered experience when it comes to the world of business. He seems to be an observer and pontificator, but doesn’t actually lead on anything. He even turned the details of his prized health-care bill over to the Congress to work out the details. He hasn’t supplied any real details on how he would get spending under control. Someone with executive experience knows that must be done.

I don’t expect you Democrats to vote for any of the Republican candidates, but why don’t you admit we made a mistake in 2008 and get Hillary or someone else to run? We need leadership and aren’t getting it.

Bills which are vetted by the Congress and Senate are then sent to the POTUS, who either signs the bills (they become laws) or vetoes (they do not). again, see if you can understand this; this is why the POTUS is called the Chief Executive and his office is known as the Executive branch of government (he ‘executes’ or as George W. Just like you and the media did when Obama was running for POTUS?

Another guy who thinks the corporate media gave Obama a free ride in 2008.

They were apparently asleep those two weeks when they ran “God Damn America” video clips more or less non-stop, and when the media continued to treat Hillary’s doomed primary runs as meaningful, and when they presumed that the teensy blip of polling support that attended McCain’s initial announcement of his running mate meant the tide had turned…

and that’s just the stuff I haven’t managed to blot from memory.

1) Whether or not he “supports” raising the minimum wage has nothing to do with it being raised.
1a) The minimum wage was raised from 5.15 to 7.25 in two stages under President Bush. No new legislation or rhetoric has touched the subject since.

2) Much more regulation is incorrect. He has dropped a good number of previous regulations in order to support business, and any new regulations since then haven’t made up for the overall drop in regulation. In other words, net loss of regulations. Under Obama.

3) Uncertainty in a law doesn’t equal anti-business. Businesses don’t run on feelings, even if major investors in the stock market do.

The government needs to get its spending in order? It doesn’t take the Almighty to tell you that. I have been campaigning against deficit spending since 1981, through Democrat and Republican administrations. Simple Equation – Money In = Money Out. The problem is that ALL politicians want to maximize the money out to THEIR particular cause (wars, etc.) and minimize the money in from their constituents. After all, isn’ that how you get reelected?

The latest mimimum wage became effective after Obama became president. He supported raising it while a Senator, and raising it raises the costs of doing business.

Concerning regulation under Obama, this from investors.com:

“Regulatory agencies have seen their combined budgets grow a healthy 16% since 2008, topping $54 billion…Obama imposed 75 new major rules in its first 26 months, costing the private sector more than $40 billion…This July, regulators imposed a total of 379 new rules that will cost more than $9.5 billion”

I have heard people say the regulation was justified, which is a different subject altogether, but I’ve never heard anyone on either side say regulation has decreases or remained the same under Obama.

Seems that Uncle Onyago, Bozo’s long lost uncle who left Kenya about 25 yrs ago had a blood alcohol of 0.14, just a bit above the legal limit, and nearly hit a patrol car because he was drunk. He had just come from the Chicken Bone Saloon in Framington, MA where he apparently was swilling a few before driving home. He had been held, like Aunty Zeituni, on a deportation warrant but released earlier. Aunty Zeituni is now occupying government housing in MA and is no longer on the deportation list. Wonder why. Uncle Onyago will no doubt enjoy the same result. He seems to have been in this country for over 25 years as an illegal. You just can’t make this stuff up.

Just because some people believe the minimum wage should not be raised above a certain level does not make them immoral, nor does it mean that they don’t believe businesses should be regulated. I believe there should be a minimum wage to combat collusion among businesses, but it should not be related to what some people term “a living wage”. Also, businesses should be forced to provide certain working conditions for all its employees.

It is not nor should it be the concern of a business to pay someone what a liberal thinks they need to live at a certain level. The job belongs to the business, not the person. What the person owns is their ability, experience, and motivation.

Businesses and “the market” will never be moral in the sense you talk about. They should follow the law. One of the things liberals always say, and they are exactly right about, is that you can’t legislate morality. I find it hilarious when they then turn around and try to take the moral high ground when someone disagrees with them on issues like the minimum wage or entitlements.

I applaud her publically speaking of faith in God, which many men holding position of leadership and authority are afraid to do. I also believe the catastrophic events we see are divine warning signs, it is written, not to be taken with a grain of salt.
Michele is one of those politicians herself. Her pledge of $2/gallon gasoline is something even the average politician wouldn’t conjure. She could probably be more effective focusing on being the wife and mother she is, or maybe a pretty little comedian or fashion model.

I think a minimum wage is necessary to avoid collusion among businesses in a similar industry or a monopoly from artificially holding down what the market will bear. It is an example of the proper role of government to regulate business. I think it would be appropriate for it to be tied to the cost of living, which I think some states do. I also believe there should be standards for working conditions (safety, age restrictions, overtime, etc.).

I think the “living wage” argument is bogus and arbitrary. A person with minimum skills should not be paid more than what they are worth to the business they are working for. The desire by some to force businesses to treat their employees beyond what is required by law leads to higher unemployment. Businesses exist to make a profit, and the government exists (among other things) to ensure they do that in a way that does not harm society. Both are necessary, and neither is wrong. Raising the minimum wage beyond what the market would bear DOES harm society because it leads to higher unemployment. It also discourages those who are able to keep their jobs from improving their skills.

Political Christians seem as ignorant of Christian scripture as they are of government, science, and the environment.

Representative Bachmann has invented some notion about God favoring/punishing nations. The Old Testament records only one nation favored by the God of Israel. That favored nation became “unrighteous”, so God broke up the country and scattered the people to the four winds. So much for that experiment! According to the teachings of Christ, the God of the New Testament deals with individuals, not with gangs, rallies, political parties, or nations.

Governor Perry sponsored an assembly of 40,000 people at a stadium in Houston to violate every tenet of Christ’s instructions regarding prayer. The only place an obedient Christian could pray in that stadium was in the privacy of a restroom stall. Just as Christ predicted, God did not heed the chants and wails of the misguided faithful, but Perry got his reward by a boost in the opinion polls.

Is it only ignorance, or is there a whiff of hypocrisy, as well, in political Christianity?

But all that aside, at least the Tea Party have a story and message, the Obama people have none….” Do you want to focus on Obama’s reelection or do you want to address the problems affecting the United States today? @Mick I’m all for decent wages and benefits if you earned them in the free marketplace. Unions are anti-business and run by thugs. A man like me was able to start his own plumbing business after years of reckless drinking. After I spun my truck out into a Mississippi ditch, Jesus’ hand led me out of the upside down vehicle and saved me. From there, I found the woman of my dreams in the hospital, went to church, attending a tech institute and started my own business. I couldn’t have done this in Taxachusetts where they would probably have locked me up in an insane asylum. Even if I could get out of a Taxachusetts state hospital and learn the trade, I would have had to join a union where thugs would confiscate my paycheck and I wouldn’t have been able to thrive. Now, I respect that your daddy raised nine children and led a Christ-centered existence, but the fact is, your daddy took orders from the union thugs and big gov’t.

Bachmann is addressing a group directly, knowing where their interests are.

Obama, in an attempt to ingratiate himself to California’s liberals, had the audacity to talk about people (rural Americans) of which he knows nothing. He has no idea why they hold dear, their faith. He as much as said it was out of frustration. Using people for his personal gain. Subtle ridicule, if you will.

Big difference in my opinion.

As far as Bachmann goes, I haven’t given her much thought as a candidate. As it turns out, people didn’t think too much about whether Obama would make a good leader.

When all was said and done, he wasn’t the right choice.

It’s interesting that two mediums in this country decide that God is bad or doesn’t exist or if you believe in God or worship, you are considered a person of indifference…or worse…. The two are the main stream press and Hollywood. While 100 million Americans attend church and worship God, a couple of hundred thousand people are defining that opinion. If you do believe as I do, You can only pray for them and mostly ignore them. The real story is that Christians represent a voting block of about 60 million that they can’t ignore, as much as they try. They are really waiting out that 50 and over Christian crowd, the ones that really see what’s going on, to die out. The 20 to mid 40’s demographics of Christians is low in numbers…and weak…..and will be able to be converted……..That’s when the curtain comes down on this great country. They are working on it everyday.

Without the assistance of the federal government, GM almost assuredly would have been liquidated. Reorganization without the guarantees from Washington would have been nearly impossible. Not only would you have seen the rest of the GM workforce join the unemployed but it would have affected millions of Americans whose livelihoods were directly or indirectly dependent on the automotive industry.

Losing GM would have furthered the deterioration in our economy in terms of our knowledge and capacity to manufacture things. Recall that during times of war the federal government relies on manufaturers to make the necessities of war.

GM has indeed turned around and is growing, i.e. hiring Americans.. They have already paid back the majority of what they owe the federal government. This is nothing but a success story.

But you can’t give this President any credit. At least when we were attacked on 9-11 I didn’t say well the idiot in the White House let it happen. I stood with him and the American people.

You seem to hate the auto workers and everyone who depends on the auto industry for their livelihoods. And I’ll bet you had your seat in a pew in church yesterday just assured in getting your wings and personal cloud in heaven alongside the big JC.

Nope. If “Colonel Jones” (with a Top Secret clearance) tells you something classified that you are not authorized to know (or passes on classified information to you in some form), then “Colonel Jones” is in violation of the law.

If my wife tells you something classified that you are not authorized to know, my wife is not in violation of the law because she hasn’t got and has never had a security clearance. However, Federal authorities will be very interested in how she came to know that classified information.

Plame’s role and job were classified. She had worked overseas under an assumed identity in a front organization within the previous 18 months.
