Senior al-Qaida figures have been killed before, only to be replaced. But the Obama administration’s tenor reflects a cautious optimism that victory in the decade-long fight against al-Qaida could be at hand.

al-Qaida is just the latest flavor to pop-up to the top of the terrorist Pez dispenser.

Dispose of one, another is first in line.

As long as someones is religiously poutraged — whether it is Allah directing someone to kill the infidels, or christians believing that the father/son/holy ghost is impelling them to kill abortion doctors — we will have terrorists.

Quick point on Jay’s topic though…

The physical AQ could have been summarily whipped 10 years ago with sustained, strategic munitions placement within their training camps. When you can cause fear, terror, and death to rain down from the sky with little to no advance warning, that goes a long way towards defeating the mental psyche of your adversary.

The Idea that AQ has morphed into, however, will be around for decades and might not ever be eradicated. Ideals can’t be defeated by munitions and brute physical force.

I can understand the dislike for the Obama administration. What I do not understand is the
apparent admiration by “so-called” conservatives for George W. George W. was the most liberal president this country has had since Lyndon Johnson.

George W signed more liberal legislation than any president since Johnson. The first new entitlement in 38 years was the brain child of George W and bears his signature.

The editorial page spots that I’m referring to were written by guest columnists, typically liberal college professors. The word “deserve” may not have been used explicitly, but that was the reasoning contained within the article: we brought it on ourselves. The anniversary issue sticks out in my mind because it led to one of my (published) letters to the editor. Anyway to check the editorial page on 9/11/02??

So, unfortunately, Panetta is whistleing past the graveyard if he thinks “we can cripple al-Qaida as a major threat”.

What makes that line of reasoning untenable in my mind is simple consideration of the method of attack used by the terrorists. Destroying buildings full of innocent people is not a legitimate protest to anything. They made no demands beforehand that we could have reasonably met to avoid the attack. Their goal was strictly to instill fear. Since the form of retaliation is illegitimate, I can’t get behind the idea that we brought it on ourselves.

josef–If any of these terrorists would direct their efforts to doing what would be most effective, i.e. cleaning up their own corners of the world, then I would have more respect for their grievances. I think most analysts would agree that the roots of terrorism, endemic poverty and no opportunity, have little to do with US foreign policy directly. I know our own hands aren’t clean, but I have no respect for the efforts of the terrorists.

While I might cheer and applaud “bring it on,” should I be surprised when “they” do it?

From my limited understanding of Middle Eastern culture, I think that direct, confident talk is more respected than bon mots. In case you forgot, one of the unstated goals of starting a war in the Middle East was to create a staging ground to attract the terrorists there, thus shifting their focus to a closer target and away from mainland USA. A second unstated goal of the Iraq War was to get the word out to the other dictators in the area that change was coming. If we had to do it all again, the path we took would still be considered a reasonable choice, though maybe handled differently.

Again, your approach does not address the germane and fundamental question of “why?”

More explicitly then, josef, I understand why many people in the Middle East are extremely unhappy, unhappy to the point where they would risk a lot to possibly change things. Most of their unhappiness is directly caused by their own governments, and by the lack of economic opportunity that they have. Our only role in this scenario as Americans is the financial/military support our government provides to their hated governments. As such, I think the hate the terrorists have for us is a bit misplaced. And in terms of effective use of resources, attacking the US should be waaay down the list of priorities for any Middle Easterners.

In answer to the bigger question as to our proper place in the world, I support the idea of us being the world’s policeman, simply because if it wasn’t us, it would be someone else. I don’t trust anyone else. And if this self-appointed role creates some friction world-wide, then there’s little we can do to counter it other than giving up our role, which I am against doing.

What I am struck by is the finesse in which the Obama administration has handled U.S. goals within a very difficult Middle Eastern context……Although I do not support killing in war to resolve world conflicts, I have had faith – because of President Obama’s world vision – that the U.S. has been staying in Afghanistan (which borders Pakistan) for good reason.

In case you forgot, Mary Elizabeth, Obama’s vision for the greater Middle East and Southwest Asia is the same vision that Bush set out. @@ was kind enough to provide a chronology of the events in regard to al-Qaeda before Obama took office. I’m sure you were praising Bush’s vision back then as you are for Obama’s today, since they are one and the same vision. Ditto for most of the other previously hated Bush policies such as the Patriot Act, Gitmo, the Bush Tax Cuts, etc.

There is one major difference; Obama said he would focus on finding bin laden, then take his shot. He also has used drones more aggressively in violating pakistans sovereignty. Bush was bogged down in iraq, if he just stayed in afghanistan, maybe he would’ve got bin laden, instead he did a 180 shift of military resources..

That’s a pretty thought, but what else would we expect the Defense Secretary to say, “al-Quida’s kicking our ass”? From all accounts their leadership is distributed around the planet. It’s like trying to kill cockroaches. This notion that you can eliminate them by taking out one or two guys is laughable.

The one thing that Obama has done right is to terrorize the terrorists. But I’m afraid that instead of what Jay is optimistically calling the end of Al Quida, it will mark the beginning of a new kind of hate for the West among the Arabs. It won’t be a small group of radicals, but instead a very large group of Muslims that will not consider it radical to want to kill the infidel.

I think that with the “Arab Spring” and the taking over of over 20 formally stable Arab countries with Islamic Mobs, we will begin to pay the price of what the testosterone infested North African culture see as a cowardly way of fighting. There is a factor of “Moral legitimacy” that we don’t seem to be considering when we launch thermal weapons from the belly of remote piloted drones, many times resulting in collateral damage that takes the lives of women and children.

Recently, I have had a reason to watch quite a bit of al Jazeera and while our pro-Obama media seldom mentions the controversy that surrounds such attacks, the Arab world speaks of it often.

I can’t help but wonder what the media would have thought if GW Bush would have been launching such attacks, considering the hysteria surrounding the act of putting a damp cloth over a terrorist’s face and then pouring water on his face. Perhaps we should have just put him in a cinder block building with his family and just blown all of them to bits.

I’ve often said that I would love to be a fly on the wall during a future history class, studying the logic of the post 9-11 American Liberal.

Bruno, I do not believe that President Obama and President Bush have the same philosophical view of power – and use of it – in our world.

My post was not about Bush nor about a comparison between the two presidents. It was about Obama and his “keeping his eye on the ball regarding al Qaida,” his finesse in the handling of Libya which has been consistent with his egalitarian vision (as he had laid out in Cairo and Olso), and about how Obama’s ideas are consistent with the ideas of King.

The number one reason that we are hated in the arab world is because of our unequivocal support of israel. I know, I was there and the weaponry that israel uses to defend and bully the palestinians comes from the US. It is that connection that fuels the hate. That statement is really beneath you, josef, but I will explain.

I am not into hero worship. I am into ideas. Read and reread Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize Speech and his speech in Cairo, Egypt, as I have done, several times, and really digest what he is saying.

I simply see the world much as Obama does and as King does. It has absolutely nothing to do with “hero worship” which is adolescent in nature. Again, I am into ideas.

I am so far beyond being emotionally adolescent that I am embarrassed for those who persist in that analysis of how I think, that I should even be called upon to address such a frivolous charge. In my opinion Obama is trying to move the world in the same way that I am trying to move my small part of the world into the 21st century.

King was a prophet, an activist, and an a believer in the deepest aspects of the American dream. We all know this. Further, King believed that reality could be formed from a dream (as his memorial demonstrates symbolically in its walk through from despair to hope). He knew he had the stuff with which to make that transformation happen in our nation, and he gave his life in so doing, further helping our nation to fulfill its original ideals. We should all admire and honor that in King.

Obama is a world leader, a politician who must be more pragmatically focused with realities as they are (such as war as present in Afghanistan) and he must serve this nation’s interests as its President.
However, knowing that his role requires that leadership of him does not put him in a “box” in which he cannot also have ideas that transcend his role as president and have a vision for trying to tilt the world in the same direction as King, in smaller steps at a time than King could do as prophet activist.

Obama mentions the difference between his role and that of King’s role in his Nobel Peace Prize Speech. I hope many will read it. Our president has an enlightened mind. I appreciate that in his mind just as I appreciate Jefferson’s – for their complex ideas. I also believe Obama is a very strong leader and I believe that that comes from high intellect. When you have high intellect it can give you a quiet steel of automomy. It is such that so many have not evolved to see yet that strength does not have to be domination, either in nation or in people.

For the last time, my thinking has absolutely nothing to do with hero worship. That you would perceive my thinking in such a stereotypical way is truly a disappointment to me. Surely, as much as I have posted on this blog, you should have seen by now that I am into ideas, and have been all of my life, even from the time I was a quite a young girl.

Speeches are the heart of who we are. King spoke and wrote throughout his life and he chose (or was chosen) to be an activist. Obama chose to be a senator and a president, if elected. He is a public servant who is trying to make a difference – in his role – just as King was in his role. We should not call one role better than the other. Most will agree that Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt were great presidents. Why not this president, if he proves to be that, over time? One does not have to be simply an activist to be considered “great.”

I think Obama is doing everything he has laid out in his speeches, but to see it, you must see not only with a daily vision, but a long-ranged vision. He could do so much more for our nation, if forces were not trying passionately to make him “a one term president.” Trying to do that is what is so sad, and even very hurtful, for our nation, as a whole – as well as petty, in spirit, I might add.

In King’s day, he was not thought of as a great man by many and he was maligned almost as much as Obama by those who resisted change. It took the state of Arizona twenty years to even approve of a King holiday to commemorate his life. That – in the long run – has not spoken well for Arizona. We forget so easily.

Yes, lots of accomplishments, but accomplishments that have continued to hurt our economy. So yes, forcing tons of regulations onto companies, forcing many to flee to other shores may seem like a great thing unless you happen to be feeding your family by working for one of those companies.

He’s accomplished in the overthrow of a stable government in Egypt by Islamic mobs and now Egypt is under the control of their Jew hating military. Not so good for Israel.

The list goes on and on. Yes, he has accomplished pushing the US toward more and more government, but less and less private industry. Good for bureaucrats, not so good for everyone else.

So . . . . yes, he’s accomplished a lot . . . . unfortunately.

Let’s get this right: Glenn Beck, the radio shock jock who recently left Fox News to form GBTV, loves Israelis and the Jewish people.

But his love for Jews seems to vanish when they open their mouths — which led him to make some remarks that will undoubtedly be interpreted as anti-Semitic.

Beck, who recently hosted a “Restoring Courage” rally in Israel, said on his radio show Thursday that Jews drive him crazy when they talk over one another.

“They’re constantly talking! I don’t know how that society even functions,” Beck said.

He then compared them to members of a family of eight constantly interrupting one another at dinner.

Beck quickly defended his remarks, adding that there is no one as pro-Israel as he. Beck has always been a staunch defender of Israel on his show, often to an extreme that makes many uncomfortable.

Yet he has also earned the ire of Jewish groups for his Nazi references and for his crusade against George Soros, a Holocaust survivor.

You have forgotten, or have never read, the specific flaws of MLK that I wrote of in one of my postings (in which I wrote to show how we all contain darker sides to our natures). I would think that Obama has a darker side, too, as we all do. However, being a political activist, myself, I am not going to be one to indulge in put downs of Obama, even if the masses go there. People are fickle, and, as I saw in Jim Crow days, 95% of the people can be wrong. I prefer to simply call truth – as I see it – hoping that others will also begin to see the truths I see. When I believe that Obama is wrong on an issue, long-ranged, I will call it as such. In the meantime, I see that politically, here in Georgia especially, Obama needs a few people who don’t follow the crowd to speak up for his thinking. It has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not he would want my “adulation.” It has to do with changing this state to a more progressive one. And why would you go in that direction of thought, anyway? Who can read another’s mind as to what Obama would want? I don’t give my opinions to make Obama happy; I give my opinions to change the consciousness of the people I touch in this state. Obama is a progressive thinker. I support that. It is not a matter of adulation.

Beyond that, there are many progressive thinkers, but I see in Obama a man of rare vision. It is that simple. Just because I see that rareness in him, does not mean that I “adore” him. I simply think that our nation is fortunate to have a man of his vision at this time in our history, just as I think Thomas Jefferson was a blessing to our nation at that time in its history when it was being formed. Now our nation is being transformed – for the better, I hope.

You say you have read my blog. Then, if you have, you will know that I think beyond the word “idealism” in the connotation you have used it of me, josef. Your connotation is much too simple to contain my thoughts.

I tell you, this is the most horrific and disappointing blog I’ve read. Bookman leads in trying to act like we just won WWII again. And THEN a cheap shot at Bush. The whole thing is cheap. He calls it a celebration.

Obvious terrorism had started way back with the Cole attack when Clinton was president. 9/11 happened on Bush’s first year. He fought back every way possible. (@@ gave us the record.) Obama is only finishing what Bush started and using the same pattern with new equipment..

But Obama’s latest surge into Libya was without any legality. Bush never moved without the approval of Congress. We now have a president who does not think he needs the advice of American citizens. Then the far left liberals act like he can do what he wants and you are not patriotic if you don’t agree. (And I did not bring up the first mention of patriotism!)

There’s a sickness here that is provoked and nourished by Bookman. He wants it for politics (and his job probably). But it is poisonous and obviously divisive.to the country. How can we stand together when someone is forever kicking our legs out from under us? For instance, some “silly” wants to know what WE did to cause terrorism? Absolutely nothing except to be Americans.

I shudder to see us ruined by an element that cannot keep their mouth shut. The sick here thrive on blame. It’s a killer! I don’t care to divide our country with hate. That is what this blog is today.

What did iraq have to do with terrorism or 9/11? It was always bin laden and you know what triggered him into declaring war with america? It’s because we put a base in saudi arabia which he considered holy land and an embarassment that foreigners were needed to defend the monarchy. This was after they kicked out the soviets from afghanistan. In short, bush started it against bin laden, obama finished it and iraq was very costly in treasure and blood….

Just as in asking me two days ago, if I believed a public servant could have anything but self-interest at his/her core, you showed a basic cynicism, this evening you show some of that same trait not to acknowledge the visionary part of Obama. It is there, in his speeches.

He governs as a centrist. That is different from “Obama is a centrist.” The country is center right. The country is at a crossroads. It will move either more right or more left in the near future. We will watch it unfold.

I never have doubted that Obama’s legacy will be judged by the future, or that his work is in progress. I see what I see. I saw that my father was a public servant who served his community more than his self-interests. It happens. Some are better than you might think. And some have greater vision than you might be aware.

A President can sign all the legislation he wants, its the not paying for it and leaving the next President to pay the bill, that is the problem. GWB and his Republican cohorts didn’t pay their bill’s, created a financial mess, created 1 war out of thin air and dropped the ball in the other, said he would put everyone in a home that wanted one(Via YouTube video) and nearly brought this country to its knees from his failed policy’s. History will find he was a failed President who’s policy’s created the monstrosities we are dealing with now.
Thankfully we elected a President in 2008 with some intelligence and hopefully he will be able to slowly bring this country back from the brink. Of course that will only be if the 112th Republican majority Tea Party congress decides they care about this country enough to drop their ridiculous ideologies and get some real work done like, creating jobs, housing, and passing real reform instead of blocking everything Obama is trying to do. The 112th congress is the problem, not Obama, thinking people know this, evidently the Tea Party fruitcakes haven’t received that message yet from outer-space.

Oh and Bruno? Not to dredge up old arguments, but your playing of Yes reminded me of something else…….. I also taught myself to play piano by ear. Yes was a major part of it. Rick Wakeman with his “Experts from the 6 wives of King Henry The 8th” was in fact my CROWNING achievement. Once I learned that, the rest was downhill……….. well until I saw Keith Emerson play once. I showed me that I was just a rank amateur………. I saw him doing a tour with “Emerson Lake and Powell” He did his solo. He was playing a rhythm and melody with one hand on a keyboard, and playing a different rhythm and melody with the other hand on a different keyboard. The SOB was also playing a foot bass pedal thing. He was chewing gum and he wasn’t even chewing the damn gum in time with the f’ing music. I was in front of the stage and saw him most vividly. He was also talking to someone back stage while he was making the same music that for normal people would take 6 musicians to make. I knew right then that I was just a wannabe.

Even before we nailed Bin Laden, Al Qaida was pretty much toast. Al Qaida never really represented main stream Islam anyway. The problem remains extremism of all shades. The idea that your views are the only correct views. The belief that God is on your side, and wants you to destroy those who disagree with you. Do the murdered children in Norway care whether they were killed by a homegrown right wing fanatic as opposed to Islamic extremist?
There will always be those among us that feel that their views are the only acceptable views and any form of compromise is unacceptable. Recently a fringe group of right wing extremist kidnapped the Republican party. They were so sure of their own agenda they were willing to risk economic catastrophe if they didn’t get their way. You can photo shop the president into a Nazi uniform, paint a Hitler mustache on his face, but ending Bush era tax cuts isn’t really quite the same thing as marching innocent women and children into gas chambers is it? Anyway let’s try to remember that crazy people are the problem, and not the solution.

There is present in our nation almost an intellectual “fad” that says one must call equivalent different points of view. Differing points of view need to be weighed for value and credibility, but ultimately one may need to “take sides” so that an unworthy point of view does not prevail. The point of view of the segregationalist in the Jim Crow South was not to be ultimately valued, but transcended. The point of view of the slave owner in the Antebellum South was not to be ultimately valued, but transcended. The point of view of those corporate CEO’s who see their workers not as worthy human beings needs to be transcended. It is that same spirit that is making the common people in the Middle East fight for their rights, and for their inalienable value as human beings. over that of an autocrat who has control over most of the wealth, power, and even their lives, within their nations.

The American public needs to be educated to see who is trying to centralize most wealth and power in our nation. Speaking against this trend is not “taking sides” as in a game. It is trying to elevate the average Americans’ perceptions to realize that all have equal value simply because they were “created by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.” This consciousness is now moving worldwide, not simply in America, but throughout the globe – and it was foreseen to be coming in human evolution by MLKJr. and by President Obama, as stated above in their respective quotes. It is that transcendent vision, shared, that makes MLK’s vision similar to that of Barack Obama.

My take on “mission accomplished”…….we defeated Sadam and his military…..and his party.

Trying to equate that with also defeating every faction of a civil war is a bit hard to do.
