With latest success, ’strategic defeat’ of al Qaida within reach

WASHINGTON — U.S. and Pakistani officials said Saturday that al-Qaida’s second-in-command, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan, delivering another big blow to a terrorist group that the U.S. believes to be on the verge of defeat.
Since Navy SEALs stormed Osama bin Laden’s compound and killed him in May, the Obama administration has been unusually frank in its assessment that al-Qaida is on the ropes, its leadership in disarray. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month that al-Qaida’s defeat was within reach if the U.S. could mount a string of successful attacks.
“Now is the moment, following what happened with bin Laden, to put maximum pressure on them,” Panetta said, “because I do believe that if we continue this effort we can really cripple al-Qaida as a major threat.”
A Libyan national, al-Rahman never had the worldwide name recognition of bin Laden or bin Laden’s successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri. But al-Rahman was regarded as an instrumental figure in the terrorist organization, trusted by bin Laden to oversee al-Qaida’s daily operations….
Senior al-Qaida figures have been killed before, only to be replaced. But the Obama administration’s tenor reflects a cautious optimism that victory in the decade-long fight against al-Qaida could be at hand.
“It does hold the prospect of a strategic defeat, if you will, a strategic dismantling, of al-Qaida,” incoming CIA Director David Petraeus said in July.
Two weeks from tomorrow, we mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. It has taken longer than most Americans probably expected, and it has come at a higher cost than almost anybody anticipated, but we can now mark the occasion with at least some satisfaction that justice — at least the type of justice within our earthly power — has been served.

However, there are all types of veterans. There are for example “Vietnam Era” veterans who served as computer technicians and never left the states. Then there are “Vietnam Veterans” who served in infantry combat for 13 months.
Color me unimpressed. Anybody who’s been in the Marine Corps knows that the brightest enlisted people get assigned to some MOS other than the 0300–Infantry classifications. Strangely, it’s just the opposite for officers; the cream of the crop among officer candidates get assigned to lead infantry units, while the also-rans get assigned to quartermaster, communications, and other support units.
So Scout is a self-confessed dummy, meaning a military intelligence test score of 100 or lower.
In any case, the assignment to a combat role is an accidental happening. I don’t hold those who weren’t in combat units in lower regard.

I personally opt for War Between the States, the first compromise…as you know, the records of the Union are housed under the contemporary term, “War of the Rebellion,” and the Confederate ones under “The War for Southern Independence.” Both are correct, but polarizing…Civil War? The seventh generation prophecies by Red Cloud have been misunderstood and misquoted all over the net. The current Shaman of Pine Ridge recommended the book Moon of Popping Trees. It is the best book I have read about the Ghost Dance, the predictions of Red Cloud and a very detailed description of the Battle of Wounded Knee. Red Cloud’s prophecies were not about the end of the world. They were about how many of the Indian nations would take the riches back from the White man, but the Oglala would not be included and sure enough, the Laramie treaty along with several other documents prohibit the Sioux from having casinos or any type of private business. Tom Brokow tried to help, but was immediately shut down. Seems that Custer is a wound that the fed just can’t allow to heal. That place is shameful and there is no one trying to change it.
If you ever go to Pine Ridge, late October will give you a chance of seeing the Northern Lights without freezing your tail off. We had been in a sweat for almost four hours, came out and there they were. One of those moments in my life that I will never forget.
Into the shower to get this lake water off me and back out to a nice dinner.

“Civil War” may indeed be a misnomer, but it was probably the politically correct misnomer of the day. And by the way, how did you feel when English started changing in the sixties to accommodate the gender-agnostics of t he day? In graduate school, my thesis chairman became my thesis chairperson. The pronoun “their” replaced the pronoun “his” when the reference included members of the female gender. Then there was that unwieldy “his or her”.

You should know better. Any enlisted man/non-com must be prepared to step in at a second’s notice when the commander goes down. Happened all the time. Calling in medivacs, artillery, air strikes and utilizing your mortars, etc. are not for the ignorant.
Plus, you should also know that two year enlistees or draftees go in general to the infantry regardless of your GQ score or education.
