From AP:
WASHINGTON — U.S. and Pakistani officials said Saturday that al-Qaida’s second-in-command, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan, delivering another big blow to a terrorist group that the U.S. believes to be on the verge of defeat.
Since Navy SEALs stormed Osama bin Laden’s compound and killed him in May, the Obama administration has been unusually frank in its assessment that al-Qaida is on the ropes, its leadership in disarray. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month that al-Qaida’s defeat was within reach if the U.S. could mount a string of successful attacks.
“Now is the moment, following what happened with bin Laden, to put maximum pressure on them,” Panetta said, “because I do believe that if we continue this effort we can really cripple al-Qaida as a major threat.”
A Libyan national, al-Rahman never had the worldwide name recognition of bin Laden or bin Laden’s successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri. But al-Rahman was regarded as an instrumental figure in the terrorist organization, trusted by bin Laden to oversee al-Qaida’s daily operations….
Senior al-Qaida figures have been killed before, only to be replaced. But the Obama administration’s tenor reflects a cautious optimism that victory in the decade-long fight against al-Qaida could be at hand.
“It does hold the prospect of a strategic defeat, if you will, a strategic dismantling, of al-Qaida,” incoming CIA Director David Petraeus said in July.
Two weeks from tomorrow, we mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. It has taken longer than most Americans probably expected, and it has come at a higher cost than almost anybody anticipated, but we can now mark the occasion with at least some satisfaction that justice — at least the type of justice within our earthly power — has been served.

Mary Elizabeth:
We obviously have a big disagreement and thus the headwaters of your confusion.
Two points:
1) “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.”
2) The Trinity is a concept the human mind can not really understand but I believe the Bible teaches it is nonetheless true. The Holy Spirit is not greater than Jesus or God. They are “One” and the same ………….. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. One God.
“The Christian doctrine of the Trinity defines God as three divine persons (Greek: ὑποστάσεις) — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — distinctly coexisting in unity as co-equal, co-eternal, and consubstantial (Greek: ὁμοούσιοι), or of one being (Greek: οὐσία).[2] The Trinity itself is considered to be a mystery of Christian faith.
According to this doctrine, God exists as three persons but is one God, meaning that God the Son and God the Holy Spirit have exactly the same nature or being as God the Father in every way. Whatever attributes and power God the Father has, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit have as well. “Thus, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are also eternal, omnipresent, omnipotent, infinitely wise, infinitely holy, infinitely loving, omniscient.”
3) Outside of this belief, cults of various doctrinal error are born.

Funny: 5000 years ago, Moses said to Israel, “Pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land.” When Welfare was introduced, Roosevelt said, “Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a Camel, this is the Promised Land.” Now the government has stolen your shovel, taxed your asses, raised the price of Camels and mortgaged the Promised Land to China

For the “Anonymous One”
“I have the sense from time to time that I am not alone, and I suspect that despite the limited understanding we have of events in distant places, there will always be those among us who have the gleam of the quest in their eyes. They are people of every sex and station and they yearn to be challenged to a cause. They will always be looking for that wrong to right, that ill to cure, that song to sing; and there will always be those who will go to arms in aid of the helpless and the downtrodden. Ignoring the political issues of the moment, these people will champion the weak and the poor in the face of evil and tyranny. And no matter what the outcome, in their romantic hearts they will always keep the secret, if secret it must be, that they are better men for having held the lamp beside the golden door”.

got to this thing a little late (in the words of Judge Schmales of Bushwodd C.C.; “…don’t you people have homes?”), but I tend to agree with Kamchak; al Qeada is just a brand, but there are plenty of others in the same “vertical”. the bigger issue is the broad scope of “the war on terrorism” which has brought us everything from the Patriot Act, to GITMO to a $1- $2 trillion/year two theatre war (which just happens to be being waged in the two most strategic venues of the 21st century; Central Asia and the Middle East. back in the 20th century, we awere told that Communism was the boogie man (threat to all that is good) it was Europe and SE Asia. not entirely simpatico, but look at the “successful” aspects of our war on terrorism; small unit special operations and Predator/UAV surveillance and strikes. we don’t need 50,000 or 150,000 “boots on the ground” anymore than we need U.S. bases in Europe or Japan.

“Infiltration of the federal government by members of the radical Muslim Brotherhood is worse than some have warned recently, says a former FBI special agent in Washington.
The agent confirmed that at least three operatives of the Egypt-based Brotherhood – whose credo is “Jihad is our way and death in the cause of Allah is our dream” – have penetrated the Obama administration.
The shocking charge was first leveled by Muslim reformer Tarek Fatah during a recent speech in Toronto.
“When someone says that there is penetration of jihadi Islamists within society, do not dismiss it as some right-wing, xenophobic, racist rant,” warned Fatah, a Canadian journalist.
“Today in the White House, there are three members of the Muslim Brotherhood that influence Obama’s policy,” he told the audience gathered for an IdeaCity conference. “One is Rashad Hassan, who is the American ambassador to the 52-nation Organization of Islamic (Conference).”

Anyone that would suggest that this latest news is not good is strange. Likewise, anyone that would suggest that the current president should be given full credit for the accomplishments of countless numbers of intelligence and military personnel is stranger. For crying out loud, we were/are all in this mission together, that being to protect ourselves from terrorists. To reduce the conversation to partisan politics is to dishonor and disrespect. Doggone,
Nope. Supposedly there are troops who have posted general betrayus on different message boards in typical gi griping. But the reality is that the media picked it up and ran with it after the full page ad by none other than moveon.org. Straight from wiki-
The MoveOn.org ad controversy began when the anti-war liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org published a full-page ad in The New York Times on September 10, 2007 accusing General David H. Petraeus of “cooking the books for the White House”. The ad also labeled him “General Betray Us”.[1] The organization created the ad in response to Petraeus’ Report to Congress on the Situation in Iraq. MoveOn hosted pages on its website about the ad and their reasons behind it from 2007 to June 23, 2010. On June 23, 2010, after President Obama nominated General Petraeus to be the new top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan (taking over the position from retiring General Stanley McCrystal), MoveOn erased these webpages and any reference to them from its website.[2]

You mean like the ones where you come by and throw out the occasional insult? Nice try, cupcake. Go back to playing in traffic.

Thulsa, enough with the “we won/they lost” nonsense re: The renewal of the Patriot Act. From USA Today: Obama’s signature comes after the House voted 315 to 97 Thursday to extend the measure. See, this is where the GOP and neo-con tea party dipsh*ts need to stop playing politics. If this is such a big “issue” then why the 3 to 1 “support from the GOP controlled house? to wit; he cannot honor his campaign promise if the GOP overrides his veto? are you suggesting that they sent him the bill to “bluff” him? read his poli-speak; he agrees with the House, the Patriot Act is a “tool” in the war on terrorism. now, I disagree, but I did not take a side (Obama/Bush), I merely said the “war on terrorism” seems to have an enormous toolbox and endless “credit” at the local hardware store.

I guess you don’t read so well Scout. I said I receive a retirement check, and am entitled to the VA.
I just don’t happen to think I should continue to (like you do everyday) promote my service, or what I did as a GS employee.
So continue on with your self serving rhetoric…..It’s kinda like stopping into the legion for a cold one,
and one, for lack of a seat has to sit by the local blowhard who has been telling the same story over and over again to what transpired 40+ years old!
It’s history…..

Oh, you mean like when you go around calling people flat earthers, mystery meat and bigot? Yep, I’m the one with the issues, cupcake. Try again, rat voter.
“Why do you suppose American Jews always vote overwhelmingly against your beloved GOP?”
Same reason they hate Israel.

The local and state issues in Alabama have been highly partisaned for a long time. It gets old listening to the same sh*t year after year. After so long, you can almost quote the slogans and such before they’re even made public. I knew we had a national problem when the Clinton blow job fiasco jumped the shark. We’ve been degrading ever since. Each time we change administrations, it just gets worse.
