With latest success, ’strategic defeat’ of al Qaida within reach

From AP:

WASHINGTON — U.S. and Pakistani officials said Saturday that al-Qaida’s second-in-command, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan, delivering another big blow to a terrorist group that the U.S. believes to be on the verge of defeat.

Since Navy SEALs stormed Osama bin Laden’s compound and killed him in May, the Obama administration has been unusually frank in its assessment that al-Qaida is on the ropes, its leadership in disarray. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month that al-Qaida’s defeat was within reach if the U.S. could mount a string of successful attacks.

“Now is the moment, following what happened with bin Laden, to put maximum pressure on them,” Panetta said, “because I do believe that if we continue this effort we can really cripple al-Qaida as a major threat.”

A Libyan national, al-Rahman never had the worldwide name recognition of bin Laden or bin Laden’s successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri. But al-Rahman was regarded as an instrumental figure in the terrorist organization, trusted by bin Laden to oversee al-Qaida’s daily operations….

Senior al-Qaida figures have been killed before, only to be replaced. But the Obama administration’s tenor reflects a cautious optimism that victory in the decade-long fight against al-Qaida could be at hand.

“It does hold the prospect of a strategic defeat, if you will, a strategic dismantling, of al-Qaida,” incoming CIA Director David Petraeus said in July.

Two weeks from tomorrow, we mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. It has taken longer than most Americans probably expected, and it has come at a higher cost than almost anybody anticipated, but we can now mark the occasion with at least some satisfaction that justice — at least the type of justice within our earthly power — has been served.

“If you want to equate yourself to your garbage man, that’s fine and I agree that the TREATMENT of the garbage man should be equal, but trying to claim that we are all equal is just nonsense. ”

You appear not able to differentiate between someone’s assertion of political equality from your own distaste for an assertion of attributive equality. I read Paulo977’s statement as being about POLITICAL equality.

You are saying that the treatment should be the same. I agree. But people are not the same.
Maybe you read that ” “We are all equals no matter whose eyes we are viewed through.” meant that all laws should be applied equally, but Paulo just gave another liberal “feel good” statement that means absolutely nothing, I challenged her or him on it and you turned it into a definition that the treatment of everyone should be different.
She never mentioned treatment. You gave the poster an out. Congratulations.

but that is the difference between your reaction and mine. I read it, and still do, as an agreement on political equality.

” I challenged her or him on it and you turned it into a definition that the treatment of everyone should be different.”

I most certainly did not. I have not said, and you can’t quote me where I did say, that everyone should be treated differently – not politically. Obviously you can’t treat everyone exactly that same, because “treat” encompasses a huge reality and to “treat” me the same way a paraplegic is “treated”, or vice versa, would not be any form of equality. Or fairness.

Regarding Jay’s “strategic defeat’ of al Qaida verbage, maybe someone should tell that to the families of the 30 servicemen killed a few days back ………… in all probabilitybecause they were specifically targeted as a result of Vice President Biden’s release of classified information identifying the SEALs as the one’s who got bin Laden.

That “unit” was supposed to have been kept secret to mitigate such an incident or attempt. The American public had no business knowing (at least at this time) whether that was accomplised by Green Berets, Delta Force, SEALs or the Mississippi Air National Guard !!!

“Former vice president Dick Cheney’s memoir hasn’t reached bookshelves yet, but already it’s causing a tempest among members of the former Bush administration.

I asked what you thought the ghost dance movement was (@ 10:52 p.m.) in relation to your comment (@ 10:09 p.m.):

“Oh come on. You were trying to blame the Republicans on the genocide of the plains Indians. The Ghost Dance resulted in more natives being killed than the policies of the Republicans.”

You respond (@ 10:06 a.m.) with:

“Any time you want to talk about the Ghost Dance and the prophecies of the Shaman Red Cloud, please let me know. The seventh Generation prophecies are my favorites and of course arecurrently coming true. I’ve been to Pine Ridge several times, worked and donated to programs helping the Oglala and of course visited the Shaman’s gravesite on top of that wind swept hill And of course Wounded Knee creek is just about as familiar as my backyard.
How about you?”

The contention you make that the ghost dance resulted in more deaths than the policies of the Republicans exhibits again, your lack of a time line. The ghost dance movement began in the late 1880s and was itself a response to the policies of blood genocide which had been in effect for three decades.

I have to admit, in response to “how about you” my own relation to the American Indian is not quite so spiritual, being more limited to such concerns as whose turn it is to clean the bathroom, when are you going to mow that d*mned backyard, what is the meaning of these three charges on the AmEx card, and I love you, Sweet Prince, good night. My own contact with Native American shamanism being confined to a shaman “medicine man” who worked in oncology and geriatrics.

As far as the ghost dance and the apocalyptic vision, this seems to be another expression of the traditional apocalyptic visionary millenarianism from the ideologies earlier expressed by Tecumseh, which were themselves drawn from the prophecies of Neolin and Scattamek, each gaining currency at critical junctures in the relations between the white-black and the red.

I meant to respond to that when I came in today…thanks for reminding me…and, yes, that is pretty much it at one level and especially for those like Mme Waters trying to make political capital playing the race card. There is another level, too, and that is the reopening of the Dawes enrollment and a cold, hard look at what went on during that. The two are separate issues. The official response of the Nations has had to draw the line at keeping the greedy at bay to protect the national economy from yet another raid while at the same time acknowledging the “rip off” that took place in the allotment process.

Their contention is pretty much, “funny thing it wasn’t an issue until the Buffalo came back…”

I am not so sure that Jesus “intended to divide” as you write, but that he simply acknowledges the spiritual truth that people will naturally be divided because some will not allow the Holy Spirit to enter their lives. Some will be more worldly than others in their worship of the things of this world, such as possessions. The Holy Spirit embraces all people, of all religions. Some will, in turn, embrace the Holy Spirit, and some will not.

In the scripture I gave (that immediately precedes your scripture), Jesus said that those who criticize Him would be forgiven, but that those who blasphemy the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. That implies that the Holy Spirit is greater spiritually than Jesus himself. Jesus goes further to tell the man who made an inquiry of Him that he (Jesus) is not the one to judge and divide.

So what does Jesus imply will divide people? Jesus says that a man’s life does not consist of his possessions. Thus, I believe Jesus is saying that those who live desiring only things of this world will be naturally divided from those who seek the Holy Spirit. That naturally leads to the words of Jesus in the scripture you gave.
————————————-

What I had written in my previous essay on this blog about whether religions, which can divide people, make us closer or more distant from God was this: I said that if we allow our Holy Spirits to expand on Earth that our developed Holy Spirit is able to connect to the larger Holy Spirit after we die. On the other hand, if we do not allow our Holy Spirits to expand on Earth, our souls will shrink on Earth, and there will be no Holy Spirit within us with which to connect to the larger Holy Sprit when we die.

What causes our spirits to shrink instead of expanding on Earth? Not loving our fellow man. Judging our fellow man. Condemning our fellow man. Not recognizing that we are all part of the Holy Spirit on Earth, equally.

Martin Luther King sought the Holy Spirit. He knew Jesus sought the Holy Spirit. That is why he supported Jesus. The Holy Spirit unites all people; it does not divide people. In the scripture I gave, Jesus said that the Holy Spirit will tell you what to say when the time comes. He did not say to quote this verse or that verse; he was saying to trust the Holy Spirit within. I trust the Holy Spirit within my heart that wishes me to love my neighbor as myself, and wishes me to reach out to all others spiritually, without condemnation and judgment.
