With latest success, ’strategic defeat’ of al Qaida within reach

WASHINGTON — U.S. and Pakistani officials said Saturday that al-Qaida’s second-in-command, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan, delivering another big blow to a terrorist group that the U.S. believes to be on the verge of defeat.
Since Navy SEALs stormed Osama bin Laden’s compound and killed him in May, the Obama administration has been unusually frank in its assessment that al-Qaida is on the ropes, its leadership in disarray. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month that al-Qaida’s defeat was within reach if the U.S. could mount a string of successful attacks.
“Now is the moment, following what happened with bin Laden, to put maximum pressure on them,” Panetta said, “because I do believe that if we continue this effort we can really cripple al-Qaida as a major threat.”
A Libyan national, al-Rahman never had the worldwide name recognition of bin Laden or bin Laden’s successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri. But al-Rahman was regarded as an instrumental figure in the terrorist organization, trusted by bin Laden to oversee al-Qaida’s daily operations….
Senior al-Qaida figures have been killed before, only to be replaced. But the Obama administration’s tenor reflects a cautious optimism that victory in the decade-long fight against al-Qaida could be at hand.
“It does hold the prospect of a strategic defeat, if you will, a strategic dismantling, of al-Qaida,” incoming CIA Director David Petraeus said in July.
Two weeks from tomorrow, we mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. It has taken longer than most Americans probably expected, and it has come at a higher cost than almost anybody anticipated, but we can now mark the occasion with at least some satisfaction that justice — at least the type of justice within our earthly power — has been served.

Been watching a lot of Al Jazeera lately. Obama’s victorious drone attacks aren’t coming across exactly like the US media is reporting it. It doesn’t take a radical Muslim any more to believe that launching attacks anywhere in the world that you want, sometimes killing families are the acts of an evil government. Obama has alienated Pakistan, a fence setter in the war on terror. Of course they are a nuclear power which bin Laden had at one time negotiated with in supplying nukes to al Quida.
I’m glad we are killing the leaders of terrorist groups, but I’m afriad that we are opening doors for these same groups that have never been opened before.

Certainly. voting is not the only thing that is political. Anything that is not characterised as what you are born with, or as, is political. We strive for political equality, embodied in “no one is above the law” We haven’t acheived it, but that does not negate it as a goal.

I see your point in that we hope that everyone will be given equal treatment in certain aspects of our society. But that certainly doesn’t make the actual people equal.
I was groomed as a musician from an early age and it resulted in a full scholarship, a lifetime of being able to stand out, goals to reach and a way to make a decent living during the early part of my life. If I had been treated as a equal to everyone else around me, that would have never happened.
We were not wealthy. That hand made trumpet (That I still own) and those piano lessons cost my parents money that they couldn’t afford, but because of them and my instructors seeing that trait, I have traveled a specific path and my life is enriched because of it.
Equal treatment under the law is one thing, but attempting to view everyone as equal cannot allow the individual to achieve their full potential.

Isn’t it awful when someone pins you down and you actually have to explain all this liberal horse manure? If you want to equate yourself to your garbage man, that’s fine and I agree that the TREATMENT of the garbage man should be equal, but trying to claim that we are all equal is just nonsense.
