With latest success, ’strategic defeat’ of al Qaida within reach

From AP:

WASHINGTON — U.S. and Pakistani officials said Saturday that al-Qaida’s second-in-command, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan, delivering another big blow to a terrorist group that the U.S. believes to be on the verge of defeat.

Since Navy SEALs stormed Osama bin Laden’s compound and killed him in May, the Obama administration has been unusually frank in its assessment that al-Qaida is on the ropes, its leadership in disarray. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month that al-Qaida’s defeat was within reach if the U.S. could mount a string of successful attacks.

“Now is the moment, following what happened with bin Laden, to put maximum pressure on them,” Panetta said, “because I do believe that if we continue this effort we can really cripple al-Qaida as a major threat.”

A Libyan national, al-Rahman never had the worldwide name recognition of bin Laden or bin Laden’s successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri. But al-Rahman was regarded as an instrumental figure in the terrorist organization, trusted by bin Laden to oversee al-Qaida’s daily operations….

Senior al-Qaida figures have been killed before, only to be replaced. But the Obama administration’s tenor reflects a cautious optimism that victory in the decade-long fight against al-Qaida could be at hand.

“It does hold the prospect of a strategic defeat, if you will, a strategic dismantling, of al-Qaida,” incoming CIA Director David Petraeus said in July.

Two weeks from tomorrow, we mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. It has taken longer than most Americans probably expected, and it has come at a higher cost than almost anybody anticipated, but we can now mark the occasion with at least some satisfaction that justice — at least the type of justice within our earthly power — has been served.

Please explain why the truth about the Mission Accomplished banner was spin. The banner was created by the crew on board the aircraft carrier and was not brought on by the President’s entourage. It had been created several days before the announcement was made that the president would be on board.

The carrier was headed back to the states after they had accomplished their mission.

Now please, if you have any information that disputes anything I have written, please offer it, but just calling my point spin is hardly any sort of intelligent arguemnt

how Obama’s ideas are consistent with the ideas of King.

Cant speak for a dead man, of course, but King was fervently anti-war. I can’t believe that he would be in favor of our world-wide military engagements. I can’t agree that he and Obama are like-minded in this way.

Of course the crew made the banner, but Bush used it for his own theatrical production. Bottom line, after “Mission Accomplished” the killing began and over 4000 of our boys and girls died. Bush should have “stayed the course” and kept after Bin Laden, period.

Perhaps they would have. But of course the difference isn’t whether conservatives would do that, it’s a matter of fact that Obama is ordering it done and liberals are praising him for doing it. So as far as barbarians, conservatives might be, but liberals DEFINATELY are.

Here’s a link to the speech given by Bush on the aircraft carrier that day.

See if you can find Bush saying that the mission in Iraq was over. I understand that you have an opinion on whether Bush used the sign, but considering that the only thing that was ever done with the images from that day was to hammer Bush, I would think that your offering that Bush used the sign is complete nonsense.

The number one reason that we are hated in the arab world is because of our unequivocal support of israel. I know, I was there and the weaponry that israel uses to defend and bully the palestinians comes from the US. It is that connection that fuels the hate. I’m not anti-israeli, many of the israeli’s don’t even like the way the palestinians have been treated. There is not enough land to make everybody happy, we are blessed here in the US. Even Democrats at 63% are dissatisfied with how Bozo is doing. It is so great to hear Maxine Waters ask permission of her black constituents if she can criticize Bozo. “I think you may be a bit too taken with hero worship on our President and ranking him with MLK.”
——————————————————

That statement is really beneath you, josef, but I will explain.

I am not into hero worship. I am into ideas. Read and reread Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize Speech and his speech in Cairo, Egypt, as I have done, several times, and really digest what he is saying.

I simply see the world much as Obama does and as King does. It has absolutely nothing to do with “hero worship” which is adolescent in nature. Again, I am into ideas.

I am so far beyond being emotionally adolescent that I am embarrassed for those who persist in that analysis of how I think, that I should even be called upon to address such a frivolous charge. In my opinion Obama is trying to move the world in the same way that I am trying to move my small part of the world into the 21st century.

King was a prophet, an activist, and an a believer in the deepest aspects of the American dream. We all know this. Further, King believed that reality could be formed from a dream (as his memorial demonstrates symbolically in its walk through from despair to hope). He knew he had the stuff with which to make that transformation happen in our nation, and he gave his life in so doing, further helping our nation to fulfill its original ideals. We should all admire and honor that in King.

Obama is a world leader, a politician who must be more pragmatically focused with realities as they are (such as war as present in Afghanistan) and he must serve this nation’s interests as its President.
However, knowing that his role requires that leadership of him does not put him in a “box” in which he cannot also have ideas that transcend his role as president and have a vision for trying to tilt the world in the same direction as King, in smaller steps at a time than King could do as prophet activist.

Obama mentions the difference between his role and that of King’s role in his Nobel Peace Prize Speech. I hope many will read it. Our president has an enlightened mind. I appreciate that in his mind just as I appreciate Jefferson’s – for their complex ideas. I also believe Obama is a very strong leader and I believe that that comes from high intellect. When you have high intellect it can give you a quiet steel of automomy. It is such that so many have not evolved to see yet that strength does not have to be domination, either in nation or in people.

For the last time, my thinking has absolutely nothing to do with hero worship. That you would perceive my thinking in such a stereotypical way is truly a disappointment to me. Surely, as much as I have posted on this blog, you should have seen by now that I am into ideas, and have been all of my life, even from the time I was a quite a young girl.

You pointed out Obama’s problem without even knowing that you did. His speeches mean nothing. You are right that King was an activist. he ACTED. And he acted in the same vien as he spoke. That’s why he was a great man. Obama makes great speeches and then does nothing like what his speeches say.

This is wierd to me. If you know about Wilson, you have to know about his stance on racial purity, the KKK and his efforts to reverse the advances of Black people made since the Civil War. He is the founder of the modern Progressive Party. When Hillary Clinton said that she was a Progressive like the old fashion progressives, she had to know about Wilson and Sanger, but she said it anyway. But then you defend Democrats like they were the second coming.

MLK and Obama are both men with all the virtues and flaws associated therewith. Neither, I would posit, would want adulation and, with all due respect, you have a tendency that direction. You, like Bruno, are an idealist–and there’s nothing wrong with that, and I share that–but…

“You pointed out Obama’s problem without even knowing that you did. His speeches mean nothing. You are right that King was an activist. he ACTED. And he acted in the same vien as he spoke. That’s why he was a great man. Obama makes great speeches and then does nothing like what his speeches say.”
———————————

Did Christ’s speeches mean nothing?

Did King’s speeches mean nothing?

Did Winston Churchill’s speeches mean nothing?

Did the Gettysburg Address mean nothing?

———————————-

Speeches are the heart of who we are. King spoke and wrote throughout his life and he chose (or was chosen) to be an activist. Obama chose to be a senator and a president, if elected. He is a public servant who is trying to make a difference – in his role – just as King was in his role. We should not call one role better than the other. Most will agree that Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt were great presidents. Why not this president, if he proves to be that, over time? One does not have to be simply an activist to be considered “great.”

I think Obama is doing everything he has laid out in his speeches, but to see it, you must see not only with a daily vision, but a long-ranged vision. He could do so much more for our nation, if forces were not trying passionately to make him “a one term president.” Trying to do that is what is so sad, and even very hurtful, for our nation, as a whole – as well as petty, in spirit, I might add.

In King’s day, he was not thought of as a great man by many and he was maligned almost as much as Obama by those who resisted change. It took the state of Arizona twenty years to even approve of a King holiday to commemorate his life. That – in the long run – has not spoken well for Arizona. We forget so easily.

If a certain segment of America would cast off their “superiority” complexed individuals, they would gain a substantial bloc of voters. However, when you let the most bigoted amongst you continue to taint your entire group, it’s so much easier for the opposition to gain those votes you would normally receive.

Where do you get the idea that I defend the Democrats? I hold them in only slightly less contempt than the GOP. I am quite well aware of WW’s opinions and actions. I don’t see an awful lot of difference between his foreign policies and those of President Obama. Both would have been right at home in Judah P’s State Department…

josef,

I apologize in advance for butting in here since I haven’t read your exchange with Mary Elizabeth, but you’ve got to be freaking kidding. Obama absolutely thrives on, craves and even cajoles for adulation.

Yes, lots of accomplishments, but accomplishments that have continued to hurt our economy. So yes, forcing tons of regulations onto companies, forcing many to flee to other shores may seem like a great thing unless you happen to be feeding your family by working for one of those companies.

He’s accomplished in the overthrow of a stable government in Egypt by Islamic mobs and now Egypt is under the control of their Jew hating military. Not so good for Israel.

The list goes on and on. Yes, he has accomplished pushing the US toward more and more government, but less and less private industry. Good for bureaucrats, not so good for everyone else.

So . . . . yes, he’s accomplished a lot . . . . unfortunately.

I just read an article desribing the British “youth” who were involved in all of the recent rioting as “feral children”.

And we have many here in this country. They were never raised right and like wild animals they will in all probability be forever “feral”.

Breaking from Newsmax.com

Pro-Israel Glenn Beck Says Jews Are ‘Constantly Talking’

Let’s get this right: Glenn Beck, the radio shock jock who recently left Fox News to form GBTV, loves Israelis and the Jewish people.

But his love for Jews seems to vanish when they open their mouths — which led him to make some remarks that will undoubtedly be interpreted as anti-Semitic.

Beck, who recently hosted a “Restoring Courage” rally in Israel, said on his radio show Thursday that Jews drive him crazy when they talk over one another.

“They’re constantly talking! I don’t know how that society even functions,” Beck said.

He then compared them to members of a family of eight constantly interrupting one another at dinner.

Beck quickly defended his remarks, adding that there is no one as pro-Israel as he. Beck has always been a staunch defender of Israel on his show, often to an extreme that makes many uncomfortable.

Yet he has also earned the ire of Jewish groups for his Nazi references and for his crusade against George Soros, a Holocaust survivor.

Oh come on. You were trying to blame the Republicans on the genocide of the plains Indians. The Ghost Dance resulted in more natives being killed than the policies of the Republicans.

And from the liberal perspective, G-d forbid! :-)
Jokes aside, though, that “superiority” card has been played by both “sides” for how long to keep their good thing going. Once those groups do see common cause, it will be a whole new revolution.
