Moammar Gadhafi and his unrequited love

Libyan rebels pawing through the Tripoli compound of Moammar Gadhafi have stumbled on some odd things, as might be expected. One guy made off with Gadhafi’s famous hat and scepter.

They also seemed to enjoy rubbing the bottom of their shoes on Gadhafi’s face.

But the most disconcerting discovery may be the extensive photo album found in Gadhafi’s quarters featuring picture after picture of former Secretary of State Condi Rice.

condi

AP photo/Sergey Ponomarev

The apparent fixation with our former secretary of state isn’t breaking news. As The Guardian noted in reporting about Rice’s 2008 visit to Libya:

“In an interview with al-Jazeera television last year, Gadafy spoke of Rice in unusual terms, calling her “Leezza”. “I support my darling black African woman,” he said. “I admire and am very proud of the way she leans back and gives orders to the Arab leaders … Leezza, Leezza, Leezza. … I love her very much. I admire her and I’m proud of her because she’s a black woman of African origin.”

After that meeting, Gadhafi gave Rice a diamond ring in a wooden box, a lute and a locket containing Gadhafi’s picture, later valued by the U.S. government at a total of $212,225. (Rice kept none of the gifts).

So you couldn’t blame Rice if she’s feeling a little creeped out by the discovery of the photo album.

From the AP-2009- Now even Gaddafi know about Obama’s reverse Midas touch———–

For all the braying by the Senate’s top three hawks about how the U.S. wasn’t doing enough to oust Libyan dictator Col. Muammar Qaddafi from power, one might be surprised to learn that exactly two years ago, Sens. John McCain (R-AZ), Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) were in Tripoli meeting with the erratic leader and giving him assurances that relations between the nations were on the mend.

According to a leaked August 2009 U.S. diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks recounting the Senators’ junket, the neoconservative Connecticut Senator captured the dynamic of aligning with a brutal dictator:

Lieberman called Libya an important ally in the war on terrorism, noting that common enemies sometimes make better friends.

Gee Jay – Nothing important to report on today, I guess. Slow news day for bedwetting liberal editorial writers, I suppose.

Here’s some good stuff for ya!

President Obama calls his own actions “unpatriotic”

“The problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for the first 42 presidents – #43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back — $30,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s unpatriotic.“

Oh when did he say this you ask? July 3, 2008 as Candidate for President.

The problem with campaign speeches is that they can come back and bite you in the butt.

It’s the “new” America?

Not new. But it’s funny you should mention that, because it brought to mind a bit of web surfing done over the weekend to help explain the Gettysburg address to my kid, whereupon I came to see this, from the wiki page on the topic:

[P]ublic reaction to the speech was divided along partisan lines. The next day the Democratic-leaning Chicago Times observed, “The cheek of every American must tingle with shame as he reads the silly, flat and dishwatery utterances of the man who has to be pointed out to intelligent foreigners as the President of the United States.” In contrast, the Republican-oriented New York Times was complimentary. The Springfield, Ma. Republican newspaper printed the entire speech, calling it “a perfect gem” that was “deep in feeling, compact in thought and expression, and tasteful and elegant in every word and comma.”

’twas ever thus, folks.

Nice touch on the copy and paste. You raise an important issue.

Nations seem to never allow themselves to think long term. They always look at the present. They refuse to realize that the present always determines the future.

So guns and ammo & chemical weapons sent to Saddam to shoot at Iran gets shot back at us in the Gulf War.

Rockets sent to Afghanistan to shoot down Russian helicopters get used to shoot down US helicopters 30 years later.

This could be a long list, but I will stop with just these two.

Well, the means of info distribution have certainly become much faster, of course, but by “amplified,” I take it to mean you think it’s nastier / louder than it used to be?

If so–from what I have read about the typical Democratic opposition newspapers (and much worse, the anonymous pamphleteers) and their take on Lincoln, a man they routinely referred to as an “ape” who was putting young men into a meat grinder so that freed slaves could ravish their wives and sisters…

It was plenty amplified, back then. Those of us who are troubled by a few “Obozos” or “Chimpys” or what-have-you, spat out by some anonymous commenter here in the early 21st century, need to remember that, is all I’m saying.

md @ 1.34, that’s all true.

But I think we had just a fairly brief golden news-dissemination age, of sorts, perhaps from post-McCarthy’s comeuppance until the dawning of the Internet era, or perhaps just until FCC regs were relaxed in the 80s, and media consolidation started decimating independent news staffs and eliminating a lot of local programming.

There was a time, though, that many here remember, when there was a fairly bright line between news, news analysis, and editorial. No TV or radio station would broadcast editorials without at least providing some semblance of a response from an opposing view. No self-respecting major newspaper would fill most of its pages with other wire services; content consisted much more of their own reporters with their own local perspectives.

Sure, the result was somewhat sanitized, and shriller voices weren’t heard quite so much, but I do think it made possible some genuinely progressive (in the non-partisan sense of the term) societal changes, that would be much harder to duplicate today as we’ve gone back to a more fractured existence.

Oh well, Capt. Obvious here is done reporting. Back later, perhaps…

I’ll always remember the 9/11 Commission hearings when she simply said we (the Bush Administration) were not on a war footing prior to 9/11. There was none of this, we inherited… Her response displayed dignity, maturity and a profound respect for the job of the executive branch. those are the traits a person acquires from earning their position and not being floated to the top like our current CiC.

I was in uniform at the time, and though I did not go to the sandbox, I knew plenty of fellows who did. My unit didn’t get sent, but ~1000 or so assorted guys did; assorted pilots, truck drivers, maintenance guys, medics and a about a battalions’ worth of infantrymen (a few hundred).

As it turned out, the infantry guys had quite a story to tell when they came back; they got chosen to be GEN Schwarzkopf’s ‘palace guard’ around his HQ, and a bunch of them were also sent to Safwan Airfield, where the surrender was signed. If you gotta go someplace like that in the service, it’s good to see some sights and have some stories to tell your grandkids.

M-K Candidate — “…….really? please enlighten us….”

Under the War Powers Resolution, a President can send our military into action overseas for up to 90 days without Congressional approval. The Act is written such that a President gets 60 days plus 30 days to disengage and withdraw, but most observers — Congress included — read that as 90 days.

The Act isn’t specific on what is permitted without Congressional approval after 90 days; my reading of it (which admittedly isn’t authoritative) is that the President can involve our servicemembers in overt military actions for up to 90 days without getting Congress’ okay; things like drone surveillance/attacks and supporting our allies’ actions (with things like supplies, transport and fuel/maintenance/munitions for their aircraft isn’t specifically spoken of in the Act and is kind of gray. So those sorts of things are probably permissible simply because they aren’t specifically prohibited.

Presidents Bush (II) and Clinton tried a novel tactic; they got Congress to approve *funding* for overseas operations and then tried to claim that Congress had implicitly approved the operations. The argument both made was that Congress wouldn’t fund something it didn’t approve of.

In any event, it appears that we didn’t have servicemembers actively working inside Libya’s territorial boundaries after the 90 days were up — which seems to comply with the War Powers Act. You could argue that any members of Force Recon, Delta Force, the SEALS or the AF 15th SOG who were still in-country constituted a violation, but Congress has generally deferred to Presidents using special forces in that way and doesn’t seem to see those sorts of deployments as overt use of military assets.

FWIW, I’m a disabled Army vet, and I opposed *both* our invasion of Iraq and our involvement in Libya.

I didn’t have to serve in either Desert Storm. But my brother did. He was a Patriot battery commander protecting that big air base in Saudi Arabia I think it was whose name escapes me. Anyway, when the first rounds of SCUDS were fired his college buddy in ROTC fired off a patriot that downed the first scud and of course this guy was all over cnn. My brother was pi$$ed because he was on the opposite side of the ring and didn’t get to fire the missile that took down the scud. His buddy shot down 2 of them I think.

I also did business with a certain CEO of a well known company here in town that was an Englishman. He was the British division commander of the main British armored division and from what his other execs were telling me he personally led his tanks across the desert to confront the Iraqi armor. Very impressive man. He was in his 50s but this guy was extremely fit and trim like a dang 19 year old Marine. Smart as a whip too with a good sense of humor. Spkr Boehner said he thought Pres Obama met the requirements of WPA. Then he said he didn’t. So he was for it until he was against it.

Rep Kucinich introduced legislation to cut off funding for Libyan operations. House Republican leadership tried to block it. In the end, a vote to cut off funds failed miserably.

So by their actions, not their rhetoric, Congress was fine with it.

KKMC? King Khalid Military City?

“when the first rounds of SCUDS were fired his college buddy in ROTC fired off a patriot that downed the first scud”

Nobody outside the military realized it then, but SCUDs don’t have a guidance system worth a rat’s hindquarters. From what I was told, they’re basically big skyrockets; you light the fuse and point it in the direction of your target, which you probably will not end up hitting. My OIC (who was an Artillery officer; I worked in a Division HQ section) said that we pretty much *had* to shoot them down, though; they scared the Saudis and if one DID hit its target, the US military would look bad. Besides, shooting down clunky old POS SCUDs gave our air defense arty guys some good practice. :)

It wasn’t the Air base you mentioned. I want to say AL Assad air base but I think that’s the base he was stationed at in Iraq. I can’t remember but for some reason I’m thinking the scuds were aimed at Israel but I’m probably just confusing the 2 because I’m pretty sure Saddam fired them at Saudi Arabia also. Anyway, they were easy to shoot down. Basically kinda like you said just like big busses that you set a fuse to and that’s it.

Bro told me that the troops got so complacent over the scuds being shot down with regularity that the biggest single casualty we took was because of a scud that got blown apart and the pieces were so big that it just fell to earth and happened to land on one of our camps and killed I’m guessing something like 17 or 27 soldiers in one fell swoop. Bro told me privately that the soldiers had become so complacent that many of them just didn’t take cover when the sirens went off and a good number of them that got hit in that shot were sitting in a mess hall just eating and not caring when the scud that was blown in 2 landed on them. He wasn’t there but that’s what he had been told happened from some other officers.

Hell they get to drink on board. We did a refueling mission with them during carrier operations out in the middle of the pacific one time and I remember seeing their sailors across the water and they had shorts as part of their uniform. Nice and cool they were in the hot ass Pacific. And they get a ration of 2 beers per sailor when their shift is done. You can’t give them away or sell them to another sailor of course. Use em or lose em but 1-2 suds after a 12-13 hour day at sea would be a nice thing.

I don’t doubt it, and I do remember that. Safety directives and regs are there to help make sure you don’t get killed or injured due to an accident or other preventable mishap. Not only were those guys in the chow hall wrong for not taking cover, their leadership was wrong for not making sure that they did. Safety’s a PITA sometimes, but I’d rather put up with the hassle than turn into a statistic.

I think the first few SCUDs were aimed at Israel, then I recall Saudi Arabia getting added into the mix.

Now all that plus the discussion of funny animals reminds me of this:

Don’t our Navy swabs get beer rations when underway? I thought y’all got some limited supply that the captain portioned out when and how he saw fit?

There’s no alcohol during Army field exercises, but when soldiers come in from the field, you don’t want to be standing between them and cold beer + grilled meat. When I got to Hawaii, the commanding general of the post had decreed no HMMWVs in the Burger King drive-thru and no dirty, ruck-carrying field solders inside the restaurant. I guess guys had been pretty eager for burgers after coming out of the field.

It’s not surprising, though; an extended period on nothing but MREs and T-Rats would put anyone off their feed. At least you sailors got three hots a day, most of the time.
