An emergency session of Travelin’ Music, to cool things down

Well, I was saving this for tomorrow’s Travelin’ Music, but when disaster looms and it’s time to rush in emergency relief, who am I to hold back? Eric Cantor?

Cool out and enjoy Sister Ella.

Hey, a new method of insulting others. First you say whatever you want about them. Attack them personally. Let it fly. Don’t hold back.

And then when they react, you can now just say that they don’t have a sense of humor. It’s a sock in the jaw and then a kick in the nads.

Drove in this morning listening to the Texas drought troubles. That is a long duration disaster that will have implications for a long time. But regarding the east coast, I have already spoken with people involved in preparations to assist. 102 crews of power systems workers headed east from Ohio. A small contractor with cleanup crews in South Carolina contacted by FEMA. And one FEMA supervisor I know personally headed for Raleigh. If we are not ready for this storm, it won’t be because the planners were asleep.

A lot of the things that happen on this blog remind me of when my eldest was in middle school. A big trend then was that kids would be incredibly cruel (standard practice for 13 year olds) but when the kid would complain, one specific teacher would claim that the person that had been attacked would need to “grow a sense of humor”. I always though that was a double whammy. Making fun of somebody and then claiming that unless they join in making fun of themselves means they don’t have a sense of humor is just thoughtless.

You have to admit that many on here may not be lemmeings, but they sure look like the old circus elephants that go trunk to tail. The current trend is using “Bless your heart” (classic Southern insult) to try to insult the oher poeter.

Wouldn’t it be great if the trend would be to actually shy away from chuildish insults and try to engage each other in intelligent debate?

Yeah Reb,

Those were funny around the first 100 times they were posted.

And I was thinking about what you wrote yesterday about your colleague’s grandparents in Texas, and I’ll throw in what I know about these situations. Now, take in mind that each State is different, and I’m not sure about Texas law, but here in Georgia, the only way officials can “force” a person into a nursing or assisted living home is if their home conditions are severely amiss and their physical safety is in immediate danger. Even then, they will do almost anything to rectify the situation without putting them into some facility.

Texas is worse off financially than Georgia (I think) and I’m assuming, like Georgia, their budget dealing with such matters is horribly slashed. In Georgia, authorities actually work with families in many ways to keep elderly relatives out of nursing homes. They provide financial assistance for home health to come to the home because it’s cheaper than putting them in a facility. The only way an elderly relative can get into a nursing home is either they must pay their own way, or if they are exclusively on Medicaid/Medicare, they must go to a nursing home from the hospital after a three day stay. And let me tell you, hospitals will not admit an elderly patient, and will certainly not keep them for three days, unless their death is imminent.

Just a couple cents from personal experience. Good luck to your friend. They’ll need it.

Fred and GLL, no USAF experience and no relatives who fly A-10, but I think “amazing gun platform” is redundant or perhaps a wasteful use of the word “amazing”. the A-10 is basically a Vulcan “gattling gun” with wings (and anti-tank missiles under the wings). I remember seeing one at an air show in the early 80’s. again, I am not vet, and know little of tactics and whatnot, but I’ve talked to a lot of folks who say; it may be limited in its application/mission, but there is not a better aircraft for the mission (close air support).

“Carney claims that Perry called for secession rated False by PolitiFact. I seem to recall several here beating that drum themselves.”

What was discussed was Gov Perry’s careful wording to give him, as Ollie North put it, ‘plausible deniability.’ Active voice vs passive voice. Not “Texas is gonna secede” but more along the lines of “you know, Texas has a right to secede. That’d be too bad if it ever got to that point, but the way things are going, who knows what might happen in the future?”

If he wasn’t making a secession point to play to the crowd and appeal to their base mentality, then why even bring it up in the first place? Why not a “that kind of talk has no place in responsible political discourse?”

Probably because he doesn’t know what ‘discourse’ means?

Reb,

” The company immediatley starting causing them more grief”

Yes, that’s been my experience as well. It’s also been my experience that many of the workers do not posess critical thinking skills past say, kindergarten, and they forget that the reason they are there is to perform the care, they are not there to bitch at me, or roll their eyes if we just let the dinner dishes go the night before and determine that somehow is proof of elderly neglect. I mean, if it was actual neglect, there would be no freaking dishes in the sink — hence we didn’t feed the old folk, and I wouldn’t have arranged for their sorry ass to even be there. See what I mean?

Oddly enough, we got more help from calling in hospice. Not sure about all hospice care, but the company we worked with, they were much more professional, and seemed to employ people who had actually graduated from some kind of nursing/medical program.

Again, not sure of all hospice programs, but this one, they weren’t there necessarily as “Angels of Death” — they came in for months (almost a year) before my old person died.

Again, I have no need to prove to you what is known to be true by those who know it, right Nothing is Free (you’ve already admitted that was your prior handle).

N-GA’s (who shows up sporadically any more) father was a P-51 pilot in WWII. Passed on a few years ago.

GLL – 9:26 – I know what you mean – I had the world’s best orange tabby who I had to put down in 2003 – miss him horribly (he really was more of a dog in cat clothing)

unfortunately, the mountain lions who ARE seen are usually taken down (even though we’re the ones in their neighborhood!)

Another thing, when we had just regular home health care come in, things started disappearing — medications (pain pills), small jewelry, clothes, etc.

Dad was at Iwo Jima and was hanging P-51s over my crib. Without a doubt, the most beautiful airplane ever created.

Two groups really pissed off the Germans. One was the Tuskeegee Airmen and the other was the Hawaiian group made up of Japanese Americans from Obama’s high School, Panahou.

Both went into combat with a point to prove.

Granny, do you mean “raising the bar” semantically or competitively” because, as far as I know, an ‘accisation’ (sic) has no wrists, which means they cannot be “limp-wristed” (juvenile code of “homosexual” I think?). I tend to agree with Keep up, in that this is playground level stuff; and being the parent of an 11 year-old, I’d say it’s more elementary school playground level, as opposed to middle school.

I was not a cat fan until I got Blu as a kitten and a friend gave me a very good book about cats and insisted that i read it. Once you understand why they do things, it is impossible not to have a lot of respoect for them, and you think God every night that they are not large enough to eat you. (Because they would)

The airconditioning people are here. I designed this house to use several small Mitsubishi Air Units, all tied to a computer so the rooms that were not being used would be allowed to warm up (or cool down in the winter) Mitsubishi notified me that I bought four units (out of six) that are dangerous and need to be replaced. They are paying for everything, but it is going to be a very long weekend.

SoCoBro – you should see them in flight … they’re a sight to behold.

and they SOUND like a plane should!

(as opposed to a lancaster bomber, which sounds like it’s about to land in your living room)

… oh, and yes, we get lots of fly-overs at our house and a dedicated fly-by every year to commemorate the Battle of Britain.

Paul: What was discussed was Gov Perry’s careful wording to give him, as Ollie North put it, ‘plausible deniability.’

EXACTLY. To put it another way:

“Perry didn’t say that Social Security was unconstitutional, he just said that there was a question as to its constitutionality,” was one argument I heard from a pundit on a similar type of “he almost said that” thing. Perry didn’t say he supported creationism, he just said (wrongly) that Texas schools teach both because he thinks kids are smart enough to know which is true. Perry didn’t say that global warming wasn’t real, just that more and more scientists are questioning whether humans are “the cause.” Perry didn’t say that Obama hates America, he just said some reporter should be a good reporter and “go ask him.”

If you really buy into the benefit of the doubt on all of those that’s your prerogative. But it’s mincing words and we could sit here all day with that. All you can say if you want to stick with science is “we don’t know what his positions really are, because he only ALMOST said those things.” So the real question is, do you want a candidate who you have to give the benefit of the doubt to, or do you want one who is clear on what his positions are on science and the constitution?

GLL, not disputing yout dad’s service record, OR your affinity for the P-51, but the Mustang operated almost exclusively in the European Theatre of Operations during WWII (what Archie Bunker called “the big one”). the Marines and sailors who took Iwo Jima likely benefited from CAS provided by carrier-based F-4U Corsairs, and any of the Grumman F-4 “cats” (Bearcat, Wildcat, Hellcat).

okay … for the guys in the room (since all of you seem to be plane nuts) – when you book a ticket to fly somewhere, do you pay attention to what kind of plane you’re flying in?

it’s the first thing the mister always asks me – like I CARE! it had 2 wings and got me where I was going, that’s all that matters … I’m convinced it’s a guy thing.

I will admit that the Spitfire was a fine aircraft and the wings give the plane a very nice look, but then again, while we are discussing beautiful WWII planes, the gull winged Corsair was one of the runner-ups. As far as one of the best, I would have to give it to the Zero. Not that attractive and had no protection for the pilot, but what a performer.

Bro

The Germans learned quickly not to mess with Americans with a point to prove. Didn’t the Airmen have a zero loss record when protecting B-17s? I had read about them since I was a kid, so I was skeptical when the movie came out, but it was actually pretty accurate.

The story of the Japanese Americans that saved the Texans is one of my favorite stories from WWII. Unfortunately, almost all of them died to save the Texans. We’ve lost almost all of that generation and every single one of my heroes were of that generations.

Fred

Be very proud of that nephew.

I have to go to the office. I really don’t want to watch these guys destroy my house.

That’s a record that’s been long debated. I don’t think they ever had one shot down that they were escorting. I think there were some that crashed on landing or for other reasons that were under their escort.
