Rick Perry, the GOP’s new BMOC; Mitt Romney, not so much

Mitt Romney is playing the long game in his bid for the GOP presidential nomination, which is pretty smart for a couple of reasons:

1.) His top two challengers, Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry, both have high probability of doing and saying stupid things that would cause their self-destruction.

2.) He really has no other choice. He knows he’s not the hot date that Republican primary voters dream about as their escort to the big dance. He just hopes to be the steady, nerdish, boring guy — the one who shows up driving his mother’s Audi — that they’ll settle for once other options are no longer available.

Two new polls demonstrate the wisdom and necessity of that approach. Gallup, for example, reports that 29 percent of Republicans now favor Perry as their party’s nominee. Romney, who drew 27 percent as recently as June, has fallen back to 17 percent. Ron Paul, at 13 percent, and Bachmann, at 10 percent, are the only other two in double digits. (Herman Cain, a previous flavor of the month, has declined to 4 percent.)

A poll by Public Policy Polling produces a parallel prognostication, putting Perry at 33 percent. Romney draws 20 percent and Bachmann 16 percent. You have to think that as Bachmann fades, most of her hard-core tea-party support will gravitate to the man from Texas, not the man from Massachusetts.

So patience, Mitt, patience. Be the Audi-driving tortoise, not the Texas jackrabbit.

Jm, please show me where I said the gold standard is superior. that said, it most certainly superior (economically) to the central bank/fiat currency model; unless of course you are an oligarch, in which case it is preferable to your lifestyle and goals. and again, I realize we are never going back, but please “justify” an economic system, which in the roughtly 100 years it has been in place (Fed Res), the dollar has lost 95% of its actual value? AND for where do you think the Military Industrial Complex and the neocon chickenhawks get the funding to “project US power” overseas? the answer rhymes with ederal eserve.

Thank you for the tone of your post. It is easy to repond with that dynamic between us. Remember, there are different kinds of intelligence. Let me go even further. Artistic talent usually has intelligence that involves that area of the brain that controls spatial relationships and design rather than straight lined logic that the verbal area controls. One type is not greater than the other; they are simply different.

Yes, people with low IQ – generally speaking – will not earn a lot of money, but again they might have insights that the person with an average or above intelligence may not have. My mother died with advanced stage Alzheimer’s yet even in the very last stages of that disease, which ravaged her mind for 10 years, she could give such wise insights out of the blue. We must “see” all with respect that is genuine because we know that every one has something that we can learn from.

Here is something from one of my writings on my own blog. I cut and paste it here because I take more time to express myself there and I think it is better expressed, as a result, than the rush of my writing here:

From 6/11/11:

“I have observed that some who view others with generalized, stereotypical perceptions, often insist that the only valid ways of knowing truths are through factual, mathematical, and scientific deductions. Although those ways of perceiving should be valued, it seems to me that many who accept only those ways of perceiving truth often fail to recognize and develop higher consciousness concerning why we are here, who we and others are in full, and how we should relate to others. These ways of understanding reality are fostered, not by a series of facts, but by the humanities, which emphasize mutilayered dimensions of thinking and perceiving human nature with complexity. Moreover, those who are exclusively centered on sets of facts for determining reality may often fail to appreciate the transcendent beauty and power of the human spirit, as experienced in performances such as Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly.” The humanities and the arts aid in cutting through stereotypical thinking into more realistic and complex understanding of ourselves and others. . .”

I closed that 6/11/11 post with this musical video of Maria Callas singing “Madame Butterfly” which some readers tonight may want to hear:

Here are reasons to vote for Ron Paul in the 2012 GOP Primary if you are considering him or you are a Democrat tired of the same old bull. This goes for those who haven’t voted.

Experience. Ron Paul has been in Congress since 1976. This is part of his voting record:

Ron never voted for raising taxes.
Ron never voted for the Patriot Act
Ron never voted to raise the debt ceiling
Ron never voted to go to war in Iraq and all the other places
Ron never voted to use your tax dollars to bail out the banks
Ron has introduced term limit legislation but has been denied by the rest of Congress
Ron does not participate in the congressional pension plan.
Ron returns a portion of his congressional office budget to the Treasury every year
Ron never voted for an unbalanced budget
Ron never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership
Ron voted against NAFTA and CAFTA
Ron has always wanted to reduce our massive spending by stopping these useless wars.
Ron will get rid of foreign aid
Ron will help audit then gradually abolish the Federal Reserve so we can return to a sound currency
Ron will enforce immigration law and close the border with Mexico
Ron is against the useless war on drugs that jails non violent criminals while the justice system allows murderers, rapists, and child molesters to get out early
Ron is against the income tax
Ron will get rid of the IRS
Ron has never taken a government-paid junket
Ron will reduce regulation so companies come back to the United States and create more jobs
Ron once offered $100 of his own money and told the rest of Congress to do the same to pay for the Congressional Medal of Honor given to Rosa Parks. No one joined him despite Congressmen earning a base salary of 174K a year.

Ron Paul is the ONLY GOP candidate who has served in the armed forces and is the only one who wants to stop the wars. Romney and the others have never served and are happy to send your sons and daughters to useless wars. This is why the media has ignored Ron Paul. We already know that the other candidates are just more of the same government spending, more wars, and more taxes.

getalife-I took up your suggestion to look up Obama’s accomplisments. Below are the first 25 listed. I was laughing so hard I was afraid I would wet my pants. I am serious folks, this is what they actaully list!

8. The White House and federal government are respecting the Freedom of Information Act
9. Instructed all federal agencies to promote openness and transparency as much as possible
10. Limits on lobbyist’s access to the White House
11. Limits on White House aides working for lobbyists after their tenure in the administration
12. Ended the previous stop-loss policy that kept soldiers in Iraq/Afghanistan longer than their enlistment date
13. Phasing out the expensive F-22 war plane and other outdated weapons systems, which weren’t even used or needed in Iraq/Afghanistan
14. Removed restrictions on embryonic stem-cell research
15. Federal support for stem-cell and new biomedical research
16. New federal funding for science and research labs

19. Funds for high-speed, broadband Internet access to K-12 schools
20. New funds for school construction
21 The prison at Guantanamo Bay is being phased out
22. US Auto industry rescue plan

Kamchak, I respect what you are saying………………….Howerver………………….

Ron Paul served in the military. He went to medical school, ran his own business (doctor) in the private sector. He turned to politics to try and right wrongs he seen, being a patriotic American. A POTUS is not a dictator, so no, he wouldn’t be able to transform America all by himself, he would need support from the congress and courts. However, I guarantee the wars would end, wasteful government would end, the Fed would end, and jobs would come back to the US while illegal aliens would no longer be welcomed and coddled as they are by Obama and the rest of the Rep contenders. Illegals drive down wages and take jobs from Americans, they bankrupt hospitals and school districts. Ron Paul is the only one who would address that problem and thus save our country. The rest is irrelevant………………………..just my opinion

Jm, do you not understand that a large portion of our “standard of living” is borrowed (originates from debt)? “the market” determines the value of equities (stocks) and commodities (gold, petroleum, pork bellies… “like you might find in a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich). we USE the dollar to buy other goods and services, but the actual “value” of the dollar is determined by the amount of dollars in the market, and when dollars are printed out of thin air (with nothing to back them but an IOU) the value of the dollar decreases. did you ever wonder why a decrease in the buying power of the dollar is called “inflation” and we also refer to “asset bubbles” in terms of economic activity? OK, what do bubbles and inflation have in common? they’re both filled with nothing but air

dear josef. . .

Did you know that David McCollough’s best selling book, and Pultizer I believe, called “John Adams” was originally intented to be a book on Jefferson and Adams together, but McCollough got so “aggravated” with Jefferson that he quit him! He went exclusively with Adams, a fine book, btw. Jefferson’s mind contained so many paradoxes. but he was a moral man, in his day, in his own way to himself, and I find his mind fascinating. It contains multitudes.

About Van Gogh. I like his painting, but there are many other Impressionists whom I prefer. I mentioned him to Mighty Righty as an example because of the combination of his mental illness and poor earning ability combined with his intellect, and also his brother’s needing to support him during his life. His brother was a good businessman but will not live in history, nor did he achieve in his life the earning power that Van Gogh will have had over time.

Do, of course, take my van Gogh comments with more than the usual grain of salt! You know the old saying “I don’t know much about art…but I know what I like?” My mom was an artist and very much taken in her old age with impressionism…got several of her canvases on my walls…she left them to me, I think, from pure spite! Me? I’m a huge fan of Rembrandt, Micheangelo. etc. My own dabblings are Caribbean…love bright colors…

And Jefferson…still can’t back down on my opinions, but I am much of the “time and place” school of thought…piss a lot of the “water fountain epiphany people” off with my contention that he and Sally might have been right fond of one another…there are ins and outs on those relationships that we should be careful in judging…

February 2003 Secretary of State Colin Powell states his case for war with Iraq; millions across the world protest.

March 2003 Under the guise of WMDs, the United States invades Iraq. Also: FEMA gutted and buried in the vast bureaucracy of the Department of Homeland Security.

April 2004 Abu Ghraib photos leaked.

May 2004 A Bush-backed FDA rejects the over-the-counter sale of “the morning after pill.”

July 2004 In his 2005 budget, Bush freezes the amount of Pell Grants for the third straight year. After his budget passes, average Pell Grant awards decrease for the first time in six years. Changes in eligibility cut thousands from grant rolls.

September 2004 The federal deficit reaches a record high. American troop deaths in Iraq now top 1,000. Also: Assault weapons ban lifted.

November 2004 Democrats, and former Naderites, gather at bars across the country to watch election results; hopes dashed again; Bush declares the close election a “mandate.”

March 2005 President Bush signs a law banning doctors from pulling life support on Terri Schiavo.

July 2005 Bush appoints conservative John Roberts to Supreme Court; three months later, he appoints conservative Samuel Alito.

August 2005 While President Bush is on vacation, Hurricane Katrina barrels down on New Orleans. Over the next two days, he travels the country for photo-ops (with John McCain and a country music star) before sending federal aid.

April 2006 News reports reveal Bush has issued “signing statements” for more than 750 laws, stating he has the power to override the laws if they conflict with his interpretation of the Constitution.

October 2006 Bush signs the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act, which allows the president to deploy U.S. military troops to police American streets in the event of a “national emergency.”

May 2007 Bush signs a presidential directive that places him in control of all three branches of government in case of an extraordinary disaster.

June 2007 For a third time, Bush vetoes federal funding for stem cell research.

March 2008 Bush has taken 879 days of vacation in his eight years of office, approximately one-third of his presidency; five years into the Iraq War, over 4,000 U.S. troops dead; estimates of Iraqi civilian deaths range from 88,000 to over half a million. [Nearly as much as Jay Bookman!]

September 2008 Bush’s approval ratings lowest in his presidency as he presides over the worst financial crisis since the Depression.

Now I don’t about you, friends, but what I think we need is another Republican in that there White House!

If this is the best the Republicans can do, then get ready for the next five years of Democrats in the office. Rich Perry, when I think of him I can almost laugh myself to tears, first he talked about Texas leaving the Union,( me laughing) are you kidding me, what else needs to be said. I won’t even go into his many other controversal “thoughts of a madman”. Romney is basically a white Obama who doesn’t give very good speeches. If Republicans want to take the White House, you will need to get a middle of the road conservative who will work with people regardless of their party. Romney out of these three is the closest to this, but unfortunately for him rich people are being are seen as villians in this economy. I have a couple people who I think could win, these three have about as much of a chance of winning as Larry, Moe and Curley winning a Nobel Peace Prize for science.

Give me a friggin break! The ONLY reason this establishment candidate is anywhere near “front-runner” status is because the establishment media says so! The only people that know who he really is are ’some’ Texans, and those who truly know who he is HATE him! Rick Perry is the epitome of an establishment candidate! Trust me, if the establishment is promoting him, that can only mean one thing! If anyone were to continue these destructive policies we’ve had to endure for the last few decades, it’s Rick “Gardasil” “NAFTA” “New World Order” “Bilderberg Group” Perry! He’s TOTALLY going to simply continue right where all these establishment/corporatist presidents left off, as if they never skipped a beat! However, I bet a million bucks he’s going to be even worse! If you know anything about history repeating itself, you’d better be voting Ron Paul 2012! http://www.celebs4truth.com

Back in for a few and no time to go back and check, so help me out please:

Has Jay answered my earlier question; does he think Obama is vulnerable at this point?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
While outside, it became clear to me, and I may be proven wrong but…assuming Obama’s negatives improve, along with the economy, and unemployment falls slightly…

Romney has no chance against Obama. Not saying Perry will win but he has a better chance and I think that is why the attacks are early and intense. Why do I say this? Well, here are a few reasons:

Obamacare, the repeal thereof, will be a big issue. Romney has a major problem there and that is why Obama, etal have done their best to align Romney with Obamacare.

If Romney is the nominee, the whisper campaign will find some disgusting way to try to convince independents that his Mormonism is “wierd” and something “to be feared”. It is an unknown for many voters. Perry is a known commodity even if many find him over the top.

Romney can be easily portrayed as a “rich guy”.

The tea party movement, which includes a share of “independents” will migrate to a less conventional choice, that being Perry, absent a newcomer.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If the economy still sucks; unemployment gets worse or stays about the same; and there is no credible “October surprise”; well, my dead rabbit may be able to garner more support than Obama.

Maybe if the previous president had actually flown a combat mission in nam, he wouldn’t have been in such a hurry to get into iraq, result? 5000 american troops dead, 30,000 severely wounded needing medical care for the rest of their lives, anywhere from 100,000 to 500k, innocent iraqi’ civilians killed as collateral damage plus 1 million refugees into neighboring countries. I’d say maybe he should have taken a toke or two and thought about the long term consequences…

I hear you but consider this.

Just learning to fly a high performance fighter aircraft is probably the most dangerous training any military service person can undergo. Just look at the training accidents/fatalities, etc.

Bottom line, in many respects what he did was more dangerous (depending on your M.O.S.) than a lot of the military personnel who served in Nam (and I was one who served there).

It is what it is.

There is one big invisible negative factor that perry will have a tough time shaking, and that is he walks and talks so much like the previous pres – it’s a flashback to bad memories ala more wars and tax cuts that are ideologically driven…

I may not know much about art, but I know what I like. And this Dali would have a hard time beating out my grandson little _____ Zell George.

A blogger intimated that Perry bothers the Left. I’m bothered by secessionist statements that Perry has made as governor of Texas, I’m bothered that he wishes to bring church and state closer together, I’m bothered by his attempt to rewrite our Constitution. I’m bothered by the fact that he appears to endorse a particular form of religion exclusive of all others. If that’s a Leftist viewpopint then so be it, yeah I’m bothered by the Governor.

“U.S. military, intelligence and diplomatic agencies are quietly making plans to secure elements of Col. Moammar Gadhafi’s expansive arsenal of weapons as his regime nears collapse and is under fire from rebels seeking to expand control over the Libyan capital.”

If that is indeed something that needs addressing, it will be and he will be coached, just like all candidates must be when it comes to “optics”. No candidate in a race for a high profile position is left to their own devices, at least not for long, once they are considered viable.

I don’t think he does much on the conservative side either, josef. The worst part is that he might be the stronger choice between him and Romney. Romney underwhelms me, and as someone pointed out above, lacks the cred/political capital to repeal Obamacare. That needs to be job #1.

“Did you notice who Obama threatened when he wasn’t getting his way on
raising the debt ceiling?

He threatened to not pay: Social Security Retirees, Military Retirees,
Social Security disability and Federal Retirees.

* He did not threaten to stop payments to illegal aliens

* He did not threaten to take frivolous benefits such as Internet access
away from violent inmates

* He did not offer to fire some of the thousands of unnecessary federal
employees that he hired

* He did not offer to cut down on his or his wife’s frivolous gallivanting
around

* He did not threaten to not pay the senators and representatives or any
of their staff

* He did not threaten to take benefits away from welfare recipients

* He did not threaten the food stamp programs

* He did not threaten to not pay foreign aid

* He did not threaten to cut back on anything that involves his base voters

The list could go on and on. He is in full political re-election mode! “
