Mitt Romney is playing the long game in his bid for the GOP presidential nomination, which is pretty smart for a couple of reasons:
1.) His top two challengers, Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry, both have high probability of doing and saying stupid things that would cause their self-destruction.
2.) He really has no other choice. He knows he’s not the hot date that Republican primary voters dream about as their escort to the big dance. He just hopes to be the steady, nerdish, boring guy — the one who shows up driving his mother’s Audi — that they’ll settle for once other options are no longer available.
Two new polls demonstrate the wisdom and necessity of that approach. Gallup, for example, reports that 29 percent of Republicans now favor Perry as their party’s nominee. Romney, who drew 27 percent as recently as June, has fallen back to 17 percent. Ron Paul, at 13 percent, and Bachmann, at 10 percent, are the only other two in double digits. (Herman Cain, a previous flavor of the month, has declined to 4 percent.)
A poll by Public Policy Polling produces a parallel prognostication, putting Perry at 33 percent. Romney draws 20 percent and Bachmann 16 percent. You have to think that as Bachmann fades, most of her hard-core tea-party support will gravitate to the man from Texas, not the man from Massachusetts.
So patience, Mitt, patience. Be the Audi-driving tortoise, not the Texas jackrabbit.

“Furthermore, take responsibility. You did everything but publish your own Social Security number here, and then you blame ME because you made your identity known?”
In a word, bull$hit, Jay.
And as was pointed out, if I had wanted my full name posted, I would have done so myself. And as was posted out so eloquently by one of the cyber-stalkers, they pointed out that they knew where I lived and had been against me in my previous profession. Since being the target of a death threat in my past profession, sent by someone who obviously had more time on their hands than needed for simple political discourse, I don’t really prefer to be investigated, researched and stalked by people with serious mental disorders as both of those posters have shown over the years.
So don’t give me any of your sanctimonious claptrap about having your name out there for all the world to see, as you have chosen it to be that way. My public days are over for good, and I have chosen THAT to be my way.
And the mere fact that you can sit and JUSTIFY their investigation and exposure of one of your bloggers is beneath contempt.

For all the braying by the Senate’s top three hawks about how the U.S. wasn’t doing enough to oust Libyan dictator Col. Muammar Qaddafi from power, one might be surprised to learn that exactly two years ago, Sens. John McCain (R-AZ), Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) were in Tripoli meeting with the erratic leader and giving him assurances that relations between the nations were on the mend.
Well with all the talk of Foghorn Leghorn, might as well be sure to mention the chickenhawks.

Jon Huntsman doesn’t pander like Mitt, he’s handsome, well spoken, reasonable, doesn’t demean others to make himself look better, speaks Mandarin Chinese (very handy in our current geo-politcal situation) and is not a lunatic. We need to have a review of your call on me Thulsa! You must admit it is startling that everytime they take a picture of Ms. Obama with people standing around of just how large she looks. Besides, she wants everyone (except herself and her husband) to give up some of the greater pleasures in life (cheesburgers and french fries) while she feasts on extremely fatty entries at every one of the numerous Whitehouse dinners she and her husband put on. Shouldn’t she lead by example? Of course, I don’t blame her. Her and husbands tenure at the Whitehouse is most probably going to be pretty short so she better eat well at the taxpayers expense while she can.

Seriously, I have strong opinions but at the same time I do try to be fair on some things and not be crazy over the top. On Michelle Obama it does bother me some of the criticism of her from cons and especially on her healthy food initiative. What in the hell could be wrong with promoting healthy food? What in the Freak is wrong with that? I mean for Pete’s sake we’ve got more fat kids running around than anyone in the world, she makes healthy food her crusade( all first lady’s have a crusade of some sort) and she gets flak for encouraging healthy eating. Its kinda ridicerlous and frankly I just don’t understand that kind of unwarranted criticism. Like you I didn’t like her at first either but her actions have won me over and the sneakers at the soup kitchen she gets a mulligan.

Everyone knows Perry will carry 46% of the electoral vote in the 2012 election if he is the nominee. No one on the left or right believes Perry will carry 51% of the electoral votes. Everyone on the left and right believes Romney can carry 51% of the electoral vote.

She is a little chunky but sheesh. How many woman in their mid 40s aren’t a little wide in the butt or a little bit of thunder thighs. Hillary, Bush’s wife was lovely in the face but you could tell you had some buttage. I have seen some things where she has been seen I think picking up cheeseburgers and such while pushing her healthy food initiative. It doesn’t look great but how do you and I know that its not that one or 2 meals a week where they indulged. I stay active, work out every day, and am about to hit the gym shortly. And yes I love a damn big mac once every couple months. Love the damn things. But the rest of the time I try to eat pretty healthily.
Even if it looks a little hypocritical here and there when she does have a big mac I see nothing wrong with the healthy food initiative. And last I have a good number of African American clients who suffer from hypertension and especially diabetes which are much more chronic in the black community. I think her message is especially important for the black community because of who she is given the stats on hypertension and diabetes.
Bottom line is that her message can’t hurt even if she looks hypocritical every once in awhile with a cheeseburger. It can only help us as a nation considering how many fat kids we got running around.

I would have strongly considered voting for McCain the real maverick myself…too bad that man would be embarrassed by the current McCain.

Jed, can I have an Option D?
Because Romney would make a competent president, even if I wouldn’t vote for him against Obama, and the prospect of Perry as president frightens me as an American?

josef–I’ve been working hard today to confirm whether RC is a true Redneck or not. Let’s see if he can answer these questions:
(1) Which of these cars will rust out first when placed on blocks in your front yard??
(a) ‘65 Ford Fairlane
(b) ‘69 Chevrolet Chevelle
(c) ‘64 Pontiac GTO
(2) Calculate the smallest limb diameter on a persimmon tree that will support a 10 lb possum.
(3) A woodcutter has a chain saw that operates at 2700 rpm. The density of the pine trees in the plot to harvested is 470 per acre. The plot is 2.3 acres in size. How many Budweisers will be drunk before the trees are cut down??
(4) If your uncle builds a still that produces 20 gallons of shine per hour, how many car radiators are required to condense the product??

So patience, Mitt, patience. Be the Audi-driving tortoise, not the Texas jackrabbit.
I completely agree, and wish him well. He’s just the scumbag we need. And there’s no question we need one, it’s just the one currently in there really is such a fraud and a swish. I have no patience for him.

Obama is going to beat either one of these clowns, wait till the idiots on the right get their man, Obama is going to expolit both of these hypocrites records.
National Security is a lock for President Obama, the hypocrites on the right do not want to give him credit for keeping us safe the last 3 years, the first 3 years under bush 3,000 Americans Ny dead.
President Obama took care of the Lib, maybe if Bush had took Obama play book and let our allies help with Irag we would not have that many dead soliders.
Do we really want another hypocrite acting redneck from Tex as the the President?

Putting your party loyalty aside, can you at least admit that the pickins are very slim on both sides of the political aisle for 2012, Jay?? I’d almost prefer Obama to win than Romney, only because their policies are likely going to be the same. I’d rather the Democrats get the black eye for the resulting failure.

By the way, in calling Obama a “swish” I mean to point out his utter cravenness and worse than worthlessness as a leader, not anything untoward about his sexuality of course.
There’s no question we need a scumbag in the highest office right now, but that’s because lacking a genuine alternative from a progressive or leftist front, we can do no better.
Better to give the people the naked face of raw cynical power and the black slime ooze of capitalist exploitation than an attempt to put a nice face on that same scum, as the pitiful Obama experiment in hope attempts to do. And we see where that’s getting us — the worst of both worlds.

Former Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams is running for Congress on a staunchly anti-Obama, anti-government platform. He recently came out with a new video ad called “The Donkey Whisperer” that’s raising a lot of eyebrows for conflating Democrats with welfare recipients and comparing them to donkeys.
In the video, Williams is interacting with donkeys and chastises them with words like, “All these guys want is more shelter, more feed. [...] You want a handout.” At one point Williams says, “They keep thinking that Obama is going to take care of them, Obama is going to feed them.” “These donkeys don’t live in the United States of France,” he exclaims, “they live in the United States of America!”

Wonder how much this “farmer/rancher” is getting in farm subsidies. Funny how these “donkeys” are working for him and he considers their “pay” in the form of food and shelter for domesticated working animals to be handouts.

If Rick Perry gets elected President, any sane person will pack up and leave the U.S. He is all style and no substance. He is completely controlled by big business, and has virtually, single-handedly, destroyed the Texas school system. He cares nothing about massive pollution as long as he, and his chronies are getting their donations, and this is just a few of his faults.

Yep, of course, and that is fair enough.
Would I be correct in the assumption that you feel Obama is notably vulnerable at this point in the process?

++++++++++++++
I don’t know about his uncle, but this Uncle is envious of his distilling prowess. I actually have a very fine still; all copper; fairly large; and made over in Dawson County. The sucker has a double jacketed water-cooled condensation vessle. I haven’t had time to mess (or mash) with it yet, but I plan to set ‘er up down by the branch and see what I can produce. I will stick to small batches and not offer it for sale (in case that guvmit man is on here). Now bartering is a different story. Your corn for my rhumatism tonic
Any recipes or input would be welcome.

jm, i’ve interviewed him for an hour or so. Unlike a lot of candidates, he could talk about policy on the second, third or fourth levels. By that I mean you could ask about what he thought about an issue, and he’d tell you. Then you could ask him something about his response, and he could respond to that as well, and then respond to a question about the response.
It wasn’t talking points. He had educated himself and thought about things. On some issues, he ended up in a different place than I did, which is fine. I could at least trace the logical, factual path by which he arrived there.
My problem with him vs. Obama is that because he is reliant on his party for support, he has to pretend to believe and think things he doesn’t think or believe. And that won’t cease should he be elected.
Every politician has to do that to a degree. But I can’t recall a politician who has been forced to take it as far as Romney has.

The only difference between Perry and Romney — and it’s a potentially gigantic difference — is that between the worst kind of cynical cronyism with a veneer of modesty (Romney) and that same cronyism without a shred of modesty (Perry). Perry all but concedes he’s a crook, like some sleazy country Bible thumping con artist.
Romney on the other hand has the potential to be a GOP version of Obama — utterly unsatisfying to the partisans on his side and utterly ineffective as a defender of capitalism (despite tactical successes). But he might be just the right caretaker for a crisis shaken US capitalism that has a depression on its hands.
