Vacation ramblin’, ramblin’ thoughts and ramblin’ music

fenway

Ah, vacation.

The family wedding and reunion went off beautifully. My brother, sister and I, along with marital units, took in a game at Fenway Park Wednesday (the BoSox, alas, lost 4-0). On Thursday, we went fishing for bluefish and bass off Nantucket and caught probably 40 fish in a few hours. It was crazy. My wife was the day’s top fisher(wo)man, nailing a 36-inch striped bass. Fresh fish for dinner last night.

One of the benefits of having grown up all over the country as a military brat, and working in every corner of the country as an adult, is feeling a connection to all the places I’ve lived over the years. You’re a native nowhere, but a stranger nowhere as well.

As the great Allman Brothers put it …

Fun time with family, Jay. Life doesn’t get any bigger.

And I admire your humility. You graciously shared with us how your wife caught a 36-incher and you refrained from telling us about the bigger one you caught that got away.

stands, I can tell you this much, even though I have been a lifelong NY Yankees fan and will be to my last breath in this realm, I got to see a game in Fenway. I LOVED it! I used to work for a company headquartered up there and the VP of sales took me to a game. We sat above the third base dugout and after seeing that place SO many times on TV, being there was almost surreal. The Green Monster. Peskey’’s Pole. The Triangle. (Pictures of Bucky Dent in my head! I know, low blow to BoSox fans.)

Baseball, as you may know, is a religious experience for me. Always has been. And to see a game in this ancient cathedral was beyond words. I will always treasure those memories.

Yeah… I saw it…. while I was eating a Snickers bar…….

Good luck. We had to put a lock on our kitchen trash (one of the what looks like a cupboard drawer pulls out and holds the trash cans). She picked another lock.

Just the other day my wife said the dog was whimpering at 4 in the morning. Kept heading out the door, so my wife got up and dog took her in to the kitchen, trash strewn about. Wife forgot to engage the lock. Dog looked at her and went back to bed. Wife said she realized she hadn’t filled her food dish so the dog was saying “it’s you! It’s your fault! I didn’t want to but I was hungry!”

I gotta say that Mudfoot’s four choices are all off of the charts.

Boys and girls, this may all get ugly before it’s over.

You see, I’m in an extremely rare funk of major proportions.

My beautiful, my beloved, my pimp mobile, my Q45 got totaled this morning. A kid in a speeding VW GTI caused a wreck that I could not avoid. And trust me, I am a master at avoiding mayhem.

To say I’m heartbroken is simply inadequate. Nobody was hurt but I am damn near dying inside. I know it’s silly, but that thing was the nicest ride I’ve ever owned.

And I’m gonna soften the blow by getting royally p*ssed. (As the blokes say.) I’m trying to get there pretty quickly, so if things go downhill kinda rapidly, you’ll understand…

A lady, whose name I forgot, used to do an animal show on NPR (maybe she still does) and one time she told about her dog getting into the garbage. She said her friend remarked, “You are a professional dog trainer, can’t you train your dog to stay out of the garbage?”

She replied, “I could, but it’s easier to just keep it where the dog can’t get to it.”

Nothing that was within reach was safe from my previous Labrador, but he was indifferent to what I was eating. My current Lab is a begger, but will not touch the garbage or even food on the coffee table he could easily reach. I wish I could say it’s my ability as a dog trainer, but he just came that way.

Get in a funk. You’ve earned it.

Another thought on the dog/man thing. It’s like what happens here. People are used to their own experiences, so they see or read something and judge it by their context. They don’t think about if the other person could have a meaning different from theirs.

It’s like with people kissing. People have that happen and they think “aahhh, they like me…” When a dog kisses them they think the same thing. But if they thought that a dog uses his tongue for toilet paper, they might have a different view of what the dog thinks of them.

read up on him, too…

“At the age of 18, Reinhardt was injured in a fire that ravaged the caravan he shared with Florine “Bella” Mayer, his first wife.[6] They were very poor, and to supplement their income Bella made imitation flowers out of celluloid and paper. Consequently, their home was full of this highly flammable material. Returning from a performance late one night, Reinhardt apparently knocked over a candle on his way to bed. While his family and neighbours were quick to pull him to safety, he received first- and second-degree burns over half his body. His right leg was paralysed and the third and fourth fingers of his left hand were badly burned. Doctors believed that he would never play guitar again and intended to amputate one of his legs.[7] Reinhardt refused to have the surgery and left the hospital after a short time; he was able to walk within a year with the aid of a cane.

His brother Joseph Reinhardt, an accomplished guitarist himself, bought Django a new guitar. With rehabilitation and practice he relearned his craft in a completely new way, even as his third and fourth fingers remained partially paralysed. He played all of his guitar solos with only two fingers, and used the two injured digits only for chord work.”

Once you stumble upon a school you can literally just throw your line in and yank them out of the water every few seconds. Fun and super easy fish to catch. 36 inch striper? I’m definitely jealous of his mom cause that dwarfs any bass I’ve ever caught. He claimed she made him memorize Bible verses and recite them to her before she would agree to go out with him. Weird.

Now when I was a young buck I could pound a Bible with the best of them. It impressed the girls and made them think I never had on my mind what I had on my mind. But that’s just a act. It gets real serious when you have to recall a bunch of Bible verses just to get a date. It sort of makes things go limp, if you know what I mean. That’s taking things too far.

A veteran friend sent me this …………. interesting thoughts.

Thank you Mr. Vice President:

“So, here is how what happened in Afghanistan with the
slaughter of the guys from Seal Team Six that relates to Vice President Biden.

On the night of the Osama Bin Laden raid, Secretary of Defense Gates
asked all the people in the situation room to abstain from revealing
that Seal Team Six was the military unit responsible. Everyone agreed,
understanding the danger of revenge seekers from the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Then on Monday, Vice President Joe Biden, in an attempt to show how much
he was in the know, revealed that it was Seal Team Six. Of course the
media then ran with it. So the Pentagon has gone to great effort to
protect Seal Team Six and their families. As of last Thursday Gates, who
is no longer Defense Secretary, stated that they had implemented very
advanced security measures.

As to what happened in Afghanistan, apparently Al Qaeda fed false
information to the US that a high value target would be at a precise
location on Friday. So naturally, the military sent in Seal Team Six to
get them. It was all a set-up and heavily armed Al Qaeda and Taliban
were waiting for them and we know the results.

This is not the first time that a politician has caused the deaths of
American Servicemen, but it is one of the most egregious. I guess
Panetta, the current Secretary of Defense, and Gates are furious. I
just hope the American electorate will kick these amateurs out of office.

Incidentally, all of the above is public record. Gates has made many

No song with this one as our troops in Afghanistan on patrol and in combat aren’t playing music right now either.

As I have said before:

What do you call it when a soldier betrays his country ? TREASON
And what is the penalty ? LIFE IN PRISON/DEATH

What do you call it when a country betrays a soldier ? POLITICS
And what is the penalty ? NOTHING

“US troops may stay in Afghanistan until 2024″

“America and Afghanistan are close to signing a strategic pact which would allow thousands of United States troops to remain in the country until at least 2024, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.”

Decisions, decisions, decisions:

“With the health care law likely headed for the Supreme Court, the White House must decide whether to try and delay the case until after the 2012 election or go for an early decision to prevent money from being wasted if the initiative is struck down.”

Jay, I understand the mobility of being an Air Force brat (and proud of it – opened my eyes to different ways of doing the same things, depending on the culture). When people ask me where I’m from I always respond, “I’m an Air Force brat; home is where I’m at.”
