if you believe that everyone who can have a job should have a job, for the express purpose of “contributing.” I think it’s more fair to call it indentured servitude, keep-your-head-down kind of work in most cases.

Since this is an anything goes free for all week…………….:

Thomas Drake, the NSA whistleblower whose case partially inspired this cartoon will not be facing jail time.

According to the New York Times:

Judge Richard D. Bennett of the Federal District Court praised the former National Security Agency official, Thomas A. Drake, for his exemplary record of public service before giving him a mild scolding for improperly providing information on alleged agency mismanagement to The Baltimore Sun.

But Judge Bennett reserved his strongest condemnation for the Justice Department, saying the two and a half years that elapsed between the search of Mr. Drake’s home and his indictment in 2010 was far too long.

The visibly angry judge said that Mr. Drake had been through “four years of hell” and that the dragging out of the investigation — and then the dropping of the major charges on the eve of trial — was “unconscionable.”

The Justice Department tried to crush Thomas Drake, for the crime of exposing government waste, and despite the lack of jail time, they did a pretty good job of ruining his life. The light sentence is good news, in the way that surviving an auto accident is better than dying in one — but you can bet the next well-intentioned potential whistleblower is going to think twice before putting his or her ass on the line.

Norwegians protest shooter’s lax penalty

The fact that Norway’s maximum penalty for any crime is 21 years in prison is facing rising criticism in the wake of the twin attacks that killed 93 people, with many deeming the penalty too lax.

Ever since Norwegian media named 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik as the prime suspect, calls have been growing for the maximum penalty under the Norwegian penal code to be extended.

If found guilty, Behring Breivik’s 21 years in prison would equal a penalty of 82 days per killing.

“So many innocent people have been killed that I think he doesn’t have the right to live,” Mari Kaugerud says on her Facebook group “Yes to the death penalty for Anders Behring Breivik” that already has 1783 members.

Dozens of similar groups have sprung up since Friday’s killings, some calling for the death penalty, others for natural life in prison.

…”European governments go too soft on this. Let’s put them away for life,” he says, drawing bitterly on his cigarette.well where were you when they made that decision?

Helen Arvesen, a 21-year-old student, agrees that the sentence would be too lenient, but “I don’t like the death penalty”. (neither did his youthful and innocent prey)

Even if he is released “he’ll be facing a lot of angry people so he’ll not be safe any more”, she says, her mother standing next to her nodded in agreement. (I am sure he is quaking in his furry boots)

It doesn’t matter if you believe in global warming ’cause………….Global warming believes in you.

Drought Spreads Pain From Florida to Arizona

The pain has spread across 14 states, from Florida, where severe water restrictions are in place, to Arizona, where ranchers could be forced to sell off entire herds of cattle because they simply cannot feed them.

In Texas, where the drought is the worst, virtually no part of the state has been untouched. City dwellers and ranchers have been tormented by excessive heat and high winds. In the Southwest, wildfires are chewing through millions of acres.

Last month, the United States Department of Agriculture designated all 254 counties in Texas natural disaster areas, qualifying them for varying levels of federal relief. More than 30 percent of the state’s wheat fields might be lost, adding pressure to a crop in short supply globally.

I don’t know why people can’t understand a simple concept but I will try one more time. Please understand I know why liberals don’t want anyone to know they are liberal. Here is a more recent and hopefully simple enough answer to put this subject to sleep.

If you think taxes should be increased on a group of people beacuse they make more money than you do, or because they make too much money, you are a liberal. If you believe in or use the words “fairness” when discussing taxes, you are a liberal. If you think wealth can only be acquired by abusing “unfortunate” people, you are a liberal. Any envious thoughts by you that wealthy people acquired their wealth through some nefarious means and their wealth therefore rightfully belongs to the state is a liberal. If you blame other people for your failure, you are a liberal. Now try it on, if any of those statements apply to you you are a liberal.

Libralism is most often expressed by wanting to increase taxes on others while simutaneously opposing any hint of future reductions in their freebies.

To know what a liberal is, you need to have done some thinking first. But you haven’t done that in sufficient measure and that’s why you’re hopelessly captive to an ideology that defends the status quo.

If you were engaging in actual thought, it might dawn on you that those words you cite apply perfectly well to a Wall St baron class that depends on government support to maintain its lavish privileges, an arrangement that is predicated on the transfer of wealth from the middle and low tiers to the top.

Gay military vets to be honored in Chicago

The Associated Press
Posted : Saturday Jul 23, 2011 11:16:16 EDT

CHICAGO — Gay military veterans will be honored next week during the city of Chicago’s 9th annual salute.

Tuesday’s event will be noon to 1 p.m. at Richard J. Daley Plaza in the Loop.

The ceremony for veterans of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities will feature veterans John Graziani, Veronica Hernandez, Marquell Smith, Anthony Sullivan and Willa J. Taylor.

The Chicago Commission on Human Relations says it’s the only municipally sponsored, military salute to gay veterans.

Two commission-related committees are sponsoring the event with the organization American Veterans for Equal Rights.

No, actually there are far fewer liberals than there were even 2 1/2 years ago. Latest poll show 38% of Obama voters who described themselves as liberal in the last prsndential election say they will vote for any Republican next year.

Would love to see that poll – gotta figure that whoever took it weren’t truly “liberal” of they said they’d vote for ANY republican. Sounds kinda fishy to me.

White House stokes debt-ceiling crisis
By Jennifer Rubin
A Republican aide e-mails me: “The Speaker, Sen. Reid and Sen. McConnell all agreed on the general framework of a two-part plan. A short-term increase (with cuts greater than the increase), combined with a committee to find long-term savings before the rest of the increase would be considered. Sen. Reid took the bipartisan plan to the White House and the President said no.”

If this is accurate the president is playing with fire. By halting a bipartisan deal he imperils the country’s finances and can rightly be accused of putting partisanship above all else. The ONLY reason to reject a short-term, two-step deal embraced by both the House and Senate is to avoid another approval-killing face-off for President Obama before the election. Next to pulling troops out of Afghanistan to fit the election calendar, this is the most irresponsible and shameful move of his presidency.

As for the House, why not pass the deal that Sen. Harry Reid agreed to, send it to the Senate and leave town? Enough already.
