Both parties are guilty of that non-specific pandering to rally their troops. I think it says more about foresight and judgement that one would use something that could very well end up screwing the world to make a point about spending instead of using the budget debate, which is the vehicle for actually enacting those spending cuts.
This whole debacle shows, once again, why politicians do not make good strategic battle planners.

There were a few of the early presidents who actually had military experience. Only in the modern era of politics have we gone bat $hit crazy in choosing people who have no experience in that area. We’re more concerned about somebody’s business experience as opposed to things like that. Ken Lay and Richard Scrushy would more likely be presidential candidates than Honore or Petraeus.

Josef: What I “feel” and what I “think” are more often than not at odds one with the other.
I feel your pain sport. me too.
josef AGAIN @ 7:49 (concerning Good Samaritan): He’s trying, think of Samuel Jackson in Pulp fiction in the Diner scene. Don’t be too harsh. GS is probably older than the two of us and what he’s been taught is in conflict with his basic human goodness.
Doggone @7:56: You don’t have to agree. Neither do you have to agree with the law of gravity, but if you jump off of the top of the highest bridge at spaghetti junction, you WILL make a big red spot and be deader than a hammer beliefs of not. It’s quite clear in the bible. But it conflicts with other messages in the bible. I don’t pretend to understand it. i call it a “God Question.” IE, if I die and what I believe is true I will one day be standing in front of God and I will ask him then. Until that point, I don’t concern myself too much with whom someone is sleeping with nor in getting into prolonged arguments about it. I don’t understand homo sexuality anymore than a homosexual understands heterosexuality. I am no more turned on by a naked man than a gay man is turned on by a naked woman. (same applies for women, not being sexist). I didn’t “choose” my sexuality anymore than any gay man did. It is what it is. I’m not God so I just have to treat others as I would be treated and judge them as I would be judged.

Brosephus,
The Republicans did put forth specific plans albeit partisan plans but the Democrats have put up nothing specific. Granted this is all about political posturing on both sides, however, I think the Democrats have been playing a game of only rejecting without proposing. It may bite them on the ass but more unfortunately it could very well bite the country on its ass much worse.

Since the advent of the all-volunteer force, the percentage of the population that’s served has dropped quite a bit. We don’t have as many choices. Not only that, many folks might have a cousin or a former co-worker who served, but overall, the military has become rather isolated. It amazes me how many fervently pro/anti war people have no “skin in the game” so to speak.

Have you read the research that shows that corporate earnings are up to historical highs while unemployment hovers at ten percent? Is that just fiction? American Corporations have cut 2.9 million AMERICAN jobs while creating 2.6 million FOREIGN jobs. All the while racking up record profits.
Don’t you get it yet? Remember those Chinese supported Vietnamese that tried to kill you and killed your buddies? Both are doing well thanks to the folks YOU support. Gives you and Scout a big warm fuzzy doesn’t it? but while you are supporting THEIR military and communist buildup, you are weakening OUR Country.

Whether somebody served 3 years in Vietnam, 3 months in Kuwait, or 3 years in Iraq/Afghanistan, there is almost no way since Korea that our military hasn’t faced the possibility of action within their career. The exception would be those who go 3yrs/4yrs and done. If we had compulsory service, then maybe Coburn might have a leg to stand on. However, our military is volunteer based. TriCare is fair compensation from where I sit when it comes to those who voluntarily go into places and situations that we can’t imagine.

I think that’s who the American public needs to send to DC right about now. I’d give up a hunk of my salary to see him riding into DC in a convoy to straighten this sh*t out.

If the Republicans put up partisan plans, and the Democrats put up partisan plans, where does that leave us? In the same place we’re sitting now. I only hold the GOP a smidget more responsible because they chose the spot to stage their Electoral Shakespeare version of “Custer’s Last Stand”. In this instance, it will be the same as the original, one will win the battle, but both end up losers.

Fred, it means more politicians don’t have military experience because more people don’t have military experience. If only 10% of the population has ever served, that doesn’t produce a huge pool of potential politicians. And those politicians also don’t have sons, daughters, or anyone close to them with military experience. I think it’s all rather remote to many folks.
I’m just saying how it looks to me as a vet. Many people really don’t understand military life, except in the way they might understand life as an Alaskan dog sledder or other occupation that they’ve only heard about from acquaintances or on the news.

Actually I just googled it after thinking of FDR. my above statement is not supported by facts. Our second President, John Adams never served in the military. SInce then, 11 or twelve never have.

1811/0311 “Without faith, it is impossible to please God”
Those words were written many centuries ago. No one has the slightest idea who actually wrote them. And yet, somehow, you are willing to believe this unknown writer was inspired by God to write them. For that matter, their is not the slightest evidence there even is a God. There is a part of you that is still eight years old and cannot distinguish between fable and fact. This is scary. When you realize that a substantial number of our leaders in Washington are like you, it becomes clear why it seems our Country is being run by children who still believe in Santa Claus and The Tooth Fairy. This goes way beyond scary. And to make matters worse, it seems the only adults in the room are the Chinese, who are cold and pragmatic and, like it or not, are gradually assuming a position of world leadership. Our future does not look good and blind religious faith is one of the main reasons why.

“Those words were written many centuries ago. No one has the slightest idea who actually wrote them. And yet, somehow, you are willing to believe this unknown writer was inspired by God to write them.”
Actually, the process was early Church leaders accepted certain writings as part of what was to become the accepted body of scripture of the Church.
“For that matter, their is not the slightest evidence there even is a God.”
Which gets right back to the meaning of ‘faith.” Evidence of things not seen and all that. Requires going beyond the five physical senses.
“There is a part of you that is still eight years old and cannot distinguish between fable and fact. ”
It comes across as rather…. oh, you pick your word when you characterize such people as the Dalai Lama or Buddha in such a way.
“This is scary. When you realize that a substantial number of our leaders in Washington are like you, it becomes clear why it seems our Country is being run by children who still believe in Santa Claus and The Tooth Fairy.”
Reminds me of an interview I saw with Bruce Maher. He followed the pattern you laid out, and when the other person on the program said “I believe in a god, but what makes you think I accept any of the caricatures you put forth?”
Now, if one were to define God as the Creative Power of the Universe….. are we still on an 8-year old level?

He said, yes, it was a lot of money, but at his level it would not materially affect his lifestyle.

Anyone got the latest on the debt ceiling? Feel free to refer me back a few pages. I have read a little but I am confused. Did Boehner walk away but then come back and walk away and come back or am I reading that wrong?

I also would like to point out that any argument attempting to verify the existence of a god fails on the pure basis of being completely unprovable. Have your faith, let everyone else have or not have their own, please.

There’s nothing like it. Place where I lived over there, just outside Oxford, right on the edge of the Costswolds, there were u-pick places for strawberries and we prepped’em in many different ways. Also outside Bicester there was a small, very reasonably-priced u-pick raspberry place. To follow the earlier theme, I was in heaven!
I like your idea about breakfast. Me, I’m still holding on to the idea Lucky Charms are part of a complete and well-balanced diet plan (remnants from my sister and her grandkids visiting this past week).

“Our future does not look good and blind religious faith is one of the main reasons why.”
You’re only expressing a biased opinion without specific examples as to how faith in God clouds our future. With over 75% of Americans identifying themselves as Christian believers you truly sound like a man without a country.

I say the way Senate, House and Obama have been acting during all this I say that EVERY SINGLE INCUMBENT that is up for re-election be voted out in 2012. That includes Obama. I feel like Washington has been made into one big nursery…bunch of damn babies.

I’m always agog at the stupid of the “If you love taxes so much why don’t you MARRY them” argument that RB seems to be champion of.

Adam,
Rep Boehner is still holding to the no tax increases for the job producers (I’d really like a reporter to ask him how many jobs Spkr Pelosi or George Soros create).
“Have your faith, let everyone else have or not have their own, please.”
A nice sentiment with which I concur. Also is true when phrased “Have your lack of faith, let everyone else have or not have their own lack also, please.”

And Recon, don’t confuse people who self-identify as Christians with people who believe all the same stuff — like for example me, I identify myself as a Christian, but do not believe in heaven, hell, nor the Resurrection of Jesus. I like the message of Christianity, not the mythology of it.

Paul – re: Lucky Charms … I don’t know about the dry, cardboard-like cereal part of the cereal, but I know the marshmallow bits are DEFINITELY part of a well-balanced diet!
I thought about doing the pick your own thing, but. then, the weather turned and that thought went away.

One last thought. Was watching a show some of us here have discussed. One of those obscure series about the Universe. Hosted by Morgan Freeman. Anyhow, there was a piece on some guy at Oxford or Cambridge, chair of some science dept, did research on the topic of the show. He was profiled as he retired and became… an Anglican priest. Interesting guy to listen to.
Not always about proving as in a courtroom.
It’s a personal thing.

I don’t have a problem with that…when they create jobs, they don’t get a tax increase. They don’t created jobs, or worse they drop some, they get a tax increase.
Seems fair to me!

USinUk,
No confusion there, clearly a variance in faith exits among those who identify themselves as Christian believers. That was not my point if you followed my reply to another posters comments.

USinUK,
I remember a long time ago reading a mythology book and it had a section on Christian mythology right along with Greek, Norse, Roman, etc. It all sort of clicked into place for me then after thinking about it that way — which I never had.
