Oh, and you’re going to need a helicopter or a whitewater raft to get there.

Brocephus,
I would tend to agree with your post and with what josef said at 6:16. For the reasons both of you pointed out I don’t see the same type of self segregation here as in Europe. Nor will I expect the same reactionarries.
What’s interesting about the U.S is that the last I saw several years ago the FBI counts roughly 3,000 far right nuts and sympathizers- mostly concentrated out west and in Idaho, Oregon, Montana. In a nation of 300 million including roughly 215 million whites there are a mere 3,000 of them.
In Norway alone there are according to an article Sooth posted there are 27,000 known far right fringe group and I assume anti-immigrant group members in a nation of a mere 5 million. That right there tells you there are some serious tensions over there and I believe Norway doesn’t have near the problems that Britain, France, and Germany have had. I think all 3 of those countries have experienced various Muslim riots in the past couple of years. And as the Muslims riot and clamor you can bet there is going to be a nationalist reaction to that.
As for the LSD and I assume that means Latter day Saints they do self segregate. But I don’t think anyone cares since they aren’t out for violence or imposing themselves on others. Those people just want to be left alone and I don’t have a problem with that. Freedom of association is just as important as any other right in my book as long as you don’t present a danger to other groups or try to impose your minority view on others then I don’t care what they do- the LSD folks that is.

Now when they organize and actually have big marches where they riot and trash Seattle or Vancouver then and only then will you know that they have some critical mass. I think we have our own far-right and far-left nutcases here. With 300 million, they are vastly outnumbered by the sane people. I also think our open society where people can voice their opinions more freely also plays into us being a bit safer than our European counterparts. That’s not to say we’re safe from some basket case going berzerk with a gun or something, as it’s happened many times here. I just don’t think our dangers are quite as eminent as those on the European continent.

We have our problems, to be sure, but because we DO have our tradition of e pluribus unum, we have open more avenues to becoming “mainstream” while not having to distance themselves from members of their own identity communities. For Muslims, that means that you can hijab or be Miss America. In other Western countries, such is not so “run of the mill.”

Geez! Jared Loughner is on suicide watch.
The prison psychiatrists say he desperately needs medication. His defense attorneys are saying “NO”…not until his appeal is resolved.
A psychologist said Loughner told her on July 13 that “I want to die. Give me the injection, kill me now” and then sobbed uncontrollably for 55 minutes. From July 14-18, prison staff reported Loughner pacing for hours in his cell, appearing confused and disoriented, barely eating his meals and surviving on minimal sleep.
Under those circumstances, I wish him well in his attempts at suicide.

Meanwhile the word is that Boehner is offering a short term trillion dollar rise in the debt ceiling for a trillion dollar cut in spending, saying this deal must be accepted by 4:00pm one hour before the Asian futures markets begin opening. This is to avert a highly probable drop in the U.S. markets tomorrow. Now the question becomes will Obama blink or will he continue to play politics by insisting that a deal must carry through the election cycle. Should he continue playing politics the country will see that he’s more concerned in getting this issue off the table while he campaigns for re-election than he is the economic health of the country. If no deal is reached and there’s a serious market reduction our credit rating could also be reduced. Would Obama as president of the United States risk that? We shall see.

The world’s “first” oldest extant copy of a work of antiquity is the Gospel of John. The time distance between his original penned manuscript and the first known passage is approximately 25 years. When you get out to about 90 years, the whole Gospel of John is there not to mention the other books of the New Testament.

BADA–I have to admit that I was unfamiliar with Amy’s music during her lifetime. It seemed to me that her personal troubles got more attention than her talent did, though I read a number of reviews yesterday which compared her to some of the great blues singers. After listening to some of her youtube vids, I will agree that she had some pretty good pipes, but ultimately I didn’t feel any great connection with the content of her songs ala Christine Aguilera.

carlos–I have often wondered the same. In the end, I’ve resolved the riddle by viewing it as one more manifestation of human nature. There are a multitude of unanswered questions in life. Some people, like myself, are comfortable living with that uncertainty. Obviously, others aren’t. And though our logical side should notice the inherent inconsistencies contained in the Bible, the fact is that we’re not entirely logical creatures. Add to that our tendencies to behave as pack animals, and I can understand the popularity of mythologies like Christianity. Which I don’t really have a problem with unless people start insisting that I believe as they do or start insisting that we are somehow a “Christian Nation”.

You have stated so many inaccuracies I hardly know where to start. No one has any real idea who Homer was. The poem was originally passed down orally from generation to generation. It was finally written down by a person or persons unkown. It’s historical accuracy is limited to the fact there really was a Troy and probablly was a war. Everything else in Homer is not verifiable. The oldest extant copy of a Gospel is actually much more recent than you suggest. Also, no one has the slightest idea who wrote it. Additionally, there are actually 25 gospels. A single person decided that the four gospels we have in the New Testament are the “right” ones. Naturally, he said God inspired his choice. No scholar of any repute at all believes “the Bible is the most reliable textual ancient manuscript in history”. Only third rate teachers in far right Christian schools would say such a thing. There are four major religions in the world today; Judiasm, Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. If your “God of love” thinks it’s fair for me or anyone else to have a one in four chance of picking the right one and will throw me in hell if I pick wrong, then He would be evil beyond words. Common sense should tell you if God is real, He would not do this. And yet, you don’t hesitate to worship this kind of God. This says a number of things about you, none of them good.

While doing some work for a client, I watched some of the 1963 Lord of the Flies yesterday. I couldn’t wade through the entire thing but the comparison of some of those (dysfunctional) characters to the ones here is quite remarkable.
Take Care, B. And thanks for the FNM moniker.
Looks like you’ve garnered another obsessed fan. Good times at Bookman’s huh?
No can do, on the job – I’m off to the Dunwoody Palace of Pain to do some serious perspiring.

Well, I am sorry that some of you miss the wisdom of the Bible. Whatever you believe is the source you cannot miss the great messages that appear there.
Today, at church, we read again about Solomon. As you know, Solomon knew he would soon be a ruler. He offered a prayer to God asking”Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil, for who can govern this your great people .”
And God answered: “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you” I Kings 3:5-12
Even today most people know about the wisdom of Solomon. If only our politicians (and all of us) could discern more clearly what is right!!! Wisdom and understanding!!! A wise and discerning mind!!
The Bible gives us wisdom and understanding from an almighty God.. Why miss such a source?

Dusty,
I’m sorry but this is patently incorrect. You should read about the Councils of Nicaea. Until then Jesus was just a simple Jewish prophet with a wonderful message of peace until they voted him the “Son of God and the vote was a close thing. Bottom line: The Bible is a book that started life as a political agenda.

The Bible gives a great deal of information about King Solomon. Unfortunately, there is very little secular confirming evidence that there ever was a King Solomon. I’m going to guess no one in your Church ever bothered to tell you that.

Sorry ,Normal, the story of Solomon is from the Old Testament.
As to the New Testament, it does not matter to me who decided what about Jesus. The message of love, faith and forgiveness was clear enough. I have no problem with it.
Christianity is an offering. Each person makes their own decision. To force such acceptance defeats the whole dimension of love and salvation and freedom. As to your decisions, I love you anyway ( Well, MOST of the time!!)

carlosgvv and Aquagirl,
The Bible is historically accurate and as I understand it historians also regard it as an accurate historical text. When it talks about the different peoples that lived in the middle east many of these things and events that are talked about are historical events that we know happened. And if you disagree then please point out one historical event in the bible that took place that historians can positively prove did not happen. And I’m not talking about stuff like creation or Noah and the ark type stuff that can be neither proved or disproved. I’m talking in terms of things like the Jewish exodus, the different peoples that lived in the middle east, battles, empires, etc.
Also it should be noted that the exploits of Alexander the Great, considered by many historians to be the greatest man that ever lived, are largely documented by one man- Heroditus. And yet we believe all of his accounts of Alexander’s feats and accomplishments.

Carlosgvv,
If the bible is not the most reliable textual manuscript in history then what book or document is?

Carlos,
If you go far enough back in history you find no secular evidence that almost anyone lived. Homer, Socrates, Alexander the Great…nawwwww just a bunch of baloney. Made up. (sarcasm)
If you want to treat one of the world’s greatest religions like it does not have a skeleton to prove it, go right ahead.. You miss the whole point of faith & love to dive into nitpicking.
Do like Solomon did. Ask for wisdom and understanding.

Dusty,
I was talking about the Bible as a whole, but as an aside I do believe in the existance of King Soloman because of the written Jewish history (The Torah). Which, as you may remember, make up the first five chapters of the Old Testiment.
Anyway, I will not belittle whatever you do to make you feel good with yourself.
As for me, the Prophet called Jesus is the poster child for Liberalism.
His words should be remembered always for that very reason.
