I am not arguing the effectiveness in preparing for war or any of that. I am saying that he did not, as Lenon would say, “give peace a chance.” JD was no better. They both bear the onus of guilt for that bloodletting and savagery which, as Matti has pointed out, still is at issue today. Quit making a hero out of either Abe or Jeff, look at them for what they were and what they did to us all. They were not good people. The only positive thing to come out of it was abolition and that was a haphazard second thought. I could even go for “maybe it was a good thing” in that, but the war was unnecessary to achieve that end.

TEDDY
No, I most assuredly do not confuse him and Andrew Jackson, the devil incarnate in this household, and you must be new here or you’d know that, eh Dave and Brosephus? :-)

FDR
Yes. He could have. I reference you to the so-called Auschwitz Protocol (the Vrba-Wetzler effort) and the Brand Mission resultant thereto and what happened following that. He knew. He had an offer on the table. He refused it. Plain and simple, interpret it as you will, but 600,000 people met their demise in a matter of days because he refused to deal.

But, really, what the hell, what’s a few Indians and a few Jews when out to practice political hagiology? :-)

From the link: “Senate Democrats’ inclusion in their proposed debt package of $1 trillion in savings from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan may not satisfy ratings agencies threatening a credit downgrade since the wars were expected to end with or without a debt deal.

The budget gimmick is one that has been used by both parties. President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner had earlier considered employing it during discussions that have since broken down. Now Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid is using the trick in his $2.7 trillion deficit-reduction plan, according to aides. Boehner has not indicated where he would draw his savings, totaling up to $3 trillion.”

Depends on how they count costs. If it’s just the additive (what’s spent that would have been spent if we hadn’t gone in) then there’s a point.

BUT

If the costs include funds the Pentagon would have spent anyway, such as military pay and flying hours, and THOSE get cut, well, they we’re getting somewhere on real cuts.

Why stop at the nation’s founding? The Civil War was an inevitablity from the time of Willie’s Day at the Beach in 1066. It was just that here in the Americas the two factions found themselves in geographical isolation one from the other.

No sh*t Sherlock…. And Congress is broken into two houses. The House of Representatives and the Senate. I stated “Look at the votes historically in both Houses”, but maybe I should have used something just a wee bit more elementary so even you could understand that. How’s this for a rephrase: “Look at the votes historically in both divisions of Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate.” That’s not too hard for you to comprehend is it? Maybe my mastery of English is above and beyond your mastery of comprehension of English.

Was the clarification better and easier to understand? Maybe if you actually read for comprehension instead of reading to try to decipher ideology, you would comprehend things much better. We will just have to agree to disagree. I do not see Lincoln as “a murdering thug” and there are many who share my opinion, including poet/writer Carl Sandburg. I have never claimed that Lincoln was a “Mother Teresa” or a “Gandhi.” You are putting those stereotypical images into my mouth regarding Lincoln. I am aware that Lincoln’s mind was as complex as Jeffersons.

I do believe Lincoln had a spiritual vision intertwined with a historical vision, and that is obvious to me from reading his Gettysburg Address without preconceived ideas. If you do not see that, then there is nothing I can say that will alter your opinion of the man. I knew that you would not agree with my thoughts on Lincoln, but, in good conscience, I felt I should state my thoughts, as well as his words, to counter your very negative remarks about him. My remarks were certainly not intended to be personal to you – that goes without saying, I hope. My remarks were posted simply as a defense of Lincoln, whom I continue to believe was one of our greatest presidents.

It is best, I think, that we simply agree to disagree regarding Lincoln, josef.

Every picture that you see of Obama nowadays kind of reminds me of Bill Cosby’s portrayal of his wifes face in the old “Bill Cosby Himself” standup (or sitdown) routine. And no wonder. Obama’s approval rating is falling faster than the Shabelle river level in Africa. What is happening to Obama is the result of of a person being placed into a position that he was in no way qualified to fill. Those that built up and financed (and for that matter voted for) Obama should be ashamed of what they are putting this man through. I really do feel sorry for him.

But, for more than that. He was willing to go the distance so that the ideals on which this nation was founded – that a nation created to uphold those particular ideals not be lost forever in history. There is no constitutional requirement for a debt ceiling. Borrow and spend, like any good Republican would. If it was good enough for Bush, then it is good enough for Obama. Even better, put a cap on the current debt and just start a new one and spend until it hits 14 trillion. Let’s even take the current 14 trillion dollar debt and put it in a lock box for safe keeping. I’m not getting into y’all’s squabbles, but I would tend to agree with him that the South was more oriented to the “ideals…” i.e. the philsophical underpinnings. The North was more oriented to the commercial interests in that squabble as well and, the Mid Atlantic, once again had to be pulled kicking and screaming into the fracas. The compromise reached in Philadelphia was indeed a compromise between the economic and philosophical. Again, here the Mid Atlantic brokered that compromise. It’s why I say it goes back to Willie’s Day at the Beach where the ideolgical of William defeated the economic of the Anglo Saxon, the conflict between the two classses marking the rise of mercantile England and reaching its climax with the English Civil War, with Roundheads going North and the Cavaliers going South, placing them in geographical isolation one from the other. DANG! Clayton County beats out DeKalb when it comes to a proposed tax increase. 34% to their 26%. The increase will apply to the more stable neighborhoods.

I’m not IN a neighborhood…maybe I’ll get a break? Yeah…right!

Why I like Eldrin Bell…Commission Chairman Eldrin Bell said he plans to offer a last-minute, multi-million-dollar solution in addition to Tuesday night’s tax hike vote.

“I’m exploring the possibility, along with Mr. Edmondson, of looking at a number of vacancies we’ve had with an eye on defending them; we won’t do away with them … we’ll keep the positions in place,” Bell said, referring to Commissioner Michael Edmondson.

Bell said that move would create an immediate savings of $3 million to $4 million.

What a novel idea.

Bell and Edmondson oppose the five-mill hike as a way to deal with the budget crunch.

Our own Tax Commissioner, Terry Baskin fears a tax hike could drive more tax-paying residents out of the county. He said the county could fix its deficit by shelving several recreational centers and other special purpose local option sales tax projects, using proceeds from the recent sale of Tara Field and postponing hiring the county manager.

Another novel idea.

What does he mean when he says “will drive tax-paying residents out of the county”? Who doesn’t pay taxes.

The Commissioner representing my district? “What will cause people to flee the county is if they don’t have police officers, firefighters, and ambulance service, and this is what most of the budget is all about,” Ralph said. He also wants to pay $150,000 in annual salary to a professional administrator.

Typical Democrat.

Hannity does sometimes act like a Democrat when he won’t let someone speak…i see them do that on just about every show they get on.

Paul and josef:

I have a hard time with Sean as well. He would be so much more tolerable if he would get over himself and not get so jacked up. I wonder if it is caffiene as opposed to “illbreeding” ;-)

I will watch anyway because I respect what Hillsdale College brings to the mix and Mr. Arnn has written some imformative pieces.

I’ll have to forego it since I’ve got a major project on the other screen due in the a.m. and won’t be able to get to the tee-vee…

My impression is, he cuts people off when they’re about to make a very good rebuttal point. Like during the Iraq war, someone would begin to challenge his point and he’d break in with “Is it a good thing there are no more rape rooms?”

I always hoped a guest who’d done his or her homework and knew what to expect would have answered “Yes” and when a stunned Hannity said “What?!!?” the guest would say “it’s the only answer I could give that would make you shut up and listen.”

‘course, it might have been more polite to just say “why didn’t your mother teach you any manners?”

Arnn’s academic interest in Sir Winston Churchill led to the establishment of the annual Churchill Dinner in Washington, D.C. Past speakers at the dinner include Charles Krauthammer, Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove, and Clarence Thomas.

I’m sure he’ll give you a fair and balanced assessment. NOT!

If Obama – while in the Senate minority – had been approached about raising the debt ceiling, do you think he would have voted “yes”? If he was so principled, why would he object to others holding those same principles?

I’m guessing he was approached when he voted no. However, that situation was nowhere near as bitter and partisaned as it is now. Do I think he would go on principles and vote no if the situation was like it is now? No, I don’t think so. This debate is so divided and partisaned that it has probably ruined the credit rating of the US in the short term. So, all the talk of inflation and stuff will hit like a ton of bricks. The Feds have been holding interest rates way, way low. IF our ratings go down, which I don’t see how they won’t stay AAA now, the rise in interest rates will kill any chance of our economy recovering within the next 5 years.

That said, if the GOP succeeds in their ultimate plan to make Obama a one termer and replace him with a GOP president, that president will have to deal with the economic fallout of all this bs going on now. Unless the GOP bribes companies to hire like banshees, our economy is fu*ked until at least 2020. Whether we wanted it or not, we’re about to do our version of the “lost decade”.

As far as others holding their principles, that’s all fine and good. Holding those principles won’t mean jack when people lose what little they have if the economy goes bust after all this. We won’t have to worry about spending cuts, because there won’t be much to spend anyway. And if the economy does go bust, I’ll campaign like hell against any type of federal interference whatsoever.
