Until this week, I could brag that I was still on my first wife and my first car.
Not any longer. I’m keeping my girl as long as she’ll have me, but we’ve officially parted ways with the 1980 Toyota Corolla — “Old Blue” — that we bought new off the lot more than 30 years ago. Over the years, it had become part of the family, part of the landscape in which we lived. Our two daughters — both off on lives of their own by now — expressed shock and disbelief at the announcement. And when my wife posted the news on Facebook, the responses varied from surprise to melancholy:
“Omg you still had that car!!?!! Whoa!!”
“Ohhh, not the Little Engine That Could! I remember it well…in fact, can’t imagine you without it.”
“WOW! The car I learned how to drive standard with in Oregon. Even Mai is getting teary eyed now and she never sat in it.”
“Jay looks a little sad in that photo, if you ask me. I always liked the beautiful blue color of that car, and I remember the joy of driving it one time when you let me borrow it to go out on a story when my car was in the shop. I understand your sentimentality. Mary cried when we sold our blue van that our kids grew up with and that took us on many a vacation.”
The car has seen a lot of road, some of it rough and some of it smooth, just like the rest of us. And while the air conditioner’s busted, the radio doesn’t work, the headlight switch is fickle and it’s got some dings in it, the engine is sound and she’s got a lot of miles still in her.
They just won’t come with me driving it. She ended up in good hands, sold to a college-student friend in need of transportation who’s willing to give her the care she needs. I’m sure we’ll still see her from time to time, and smile when we do.
So of course, all of that’s just a long-winded way of saying that tonight’s theme is … car songs!

Bought a car 30 years ago and just now got rid of it? Most people just end up keeping them after so long. Does anyone know how many miles this car had? 200k plus?

I was a long-term Toyota man, but had to go with a Nissan about 3 1/2 years ago when I switched from an economy car to a small SUV. Right after that they started recalling the Toyotas for sticking accelerator peddles among other problems. Divine guidance, or just plain dumb luck??

If so, I stand corrected, Sooth. He does officially get the writing credit for it. Of course, Led Zeppelin also got credit for a lot of old blues songs that they ripped off from others.

Thanks for that Yearwood…that SO says it…I’ll be sitting here at the keyboard, something will come on my Pandora station and a memory from way back then will come in and I’m right back there…it was like that “back seat one…” as soon as you said “back seat” I busted out laughing, Unmentionable wanted to know why…so, I pulled it up and played it for him…he didn’t see the humor in it, though. He never met David, but he’s always been as jealous of him as if he’d come through in real time in our own lives…

Normal, I agree we shall see. The facts of today seem to point toward a president on the ropes for a second term. I think it all hinges on what state the economy is in this time next year and not on this debt ceiling issue as I’m sure they will find a way to raise it. If we’re clearly coming out of this mess he’ll probably get another 4 years and while I probably wouldn’t vote for him anyway, I’ll none the less applaud and won’t wince too much should he get re-elected.

I managed to put it around a telephone pole during one of our many graduations parties, but thankfully I didn’t kill anybody. I enlisted soon after in Marines and my father said son that’s a good idea and drove me to the railroad terminal with a look of relief in his eye. You’ll never see that kind of longevity or mileage from a piece of crap american made car. Our Tercel made it 115,000 before we traded to a Corolla that lasted 198,000 that we traded for a Japanese made Camry that is about to break 100,000 and was not subject to a single recall despite all the problems american-made Toyotas experienced. You don’t give your hard-earned money to a company just because they are american. You make american companies EARN your money by delivering QUALITY. That is the american way.

Sooth,
If you haven’t done Johnnys ya just haven’t lived. Haven’t been there since last summer and usually its once-twice a year I get over there as opposed to the 5 times a month back in my hunting days. I believe I’m gonna have to make a drop in there this month for old times sake. I don’t believe I’ve ever had a bad night there. How can you?

Good idea, Sooth, in fact I think I already suggested it, but for a more indefinite time period.
Sure thing, RW. You and your blog girlfriend @@ have gone out of your way to be jackasses toward me as far back as I can remember. But somehow you don’t like it when the shoe is on the other foot.

Well if it’s grade school level taunting night, once again, I guess I’ll see you fine folks tomorrow.
