Rumors are that a deal’s a cookin’.
Rumors are it’s for $3 trillion in spending cuts, with revenue increases to be adopted later. Or to be adopted now. Or maybe not adopted at all.
As the Washington Post reports, that latter possibility has Senate Democrats up in arms:
After what was described as a rambunctious hour-long meeting with Senate Democrats, Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) announced that his caucus opposes what he called the “agreement, potential agreement” because the outlines so far do not include sufficient guarantees of increased tax revenues.
“There’s no agreement. They’re working toward an agreement,” he said, adding that he received a call from a White House official during the meeting that confirmed the president had not reached a final agreement with Boehner.
The meeting included a presentation by White House Budget Director Jacob Lew, who was pilloried by Democrats who contended that Obama was giving away deep cuts to entitlements without any agreement on taxes. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), while declining to address the specifics of Lew’s talks, said she opposed the White House direction and instead would continue to support the option offered by Reid and McConnell — a backup plan to raise the debt ceiling in three phases over more than a year.
Reid said his caucus would oppose any plan that did not include increased tax revenue, questioning whether Obama had gone back on his pledge to include “balance” in the final deal.
“The president always talked about balance, that there had to be some fairness in this, that this can’t be all cuts,” Reid said. “There has to be a balance. There has to be some revenue and cuts. My caucus agrees with that. I hope that the president sticks with that. I’m confident that he will.”
I wish I could say that I was as confident as Reid claims to be.
On the other hand, Grover Norquist has made an interesting statement to the Post editorial board, stating point blank that a deal allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire would not be considered a tax increase and thus not in violation of the pledge taken by so many Republicans.
“Not continuing a tax cut is not technically a tax increase,” he said.
So does it violate the pledge?
“We wouldn’t hold it that way.”
The Post has released an audiotape of the discussion, just to ensure that there’s no doubt about what Norquist said. And there isn’t.
Later, though, Americans for Tax Reform did a moonwalk on those statements:
“ATR opposes all tax increases on the American people. Any failure to extend or make permanent the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, in whole or in part, would clearly increase taxes on the American people. It is a violation of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge to trade temporary tax reductions for permanent tax hikes.”
So who the hell knows?
I do know I’m going fishing next week and will be totally out of touch with the real world beginning Saturday. When we come off the river July 30, I guess we’ll see what’s left standing.

Sink, here’s a clue. Not all regulation is good, much is poorly worded and some outdated. Not all regulation is bad. Regulations are needed. Often technology surpasses regulation and new regulation needed. So let’s stop the silly arguments about getting rid of all regulation and start working on smart regulation that is effective.

This would be halarious if it weren’t so pathetic. We just can’t have any Islamic terrorists out there now can we?
Go ahead libs. ………………. watch the DHS video but you might have nightmares tonight !
HEADLINE: “DHS Video Characterizes White Americans as Most Likely Terrorists”
“Big Sis fear campaign continues”
“A new promotional video released by the Department of Homeland Security characterizes white middle class Americans as the most likely terrorists, as Big Sis continues its relentless drive to cement the myth that mad bombers are hiding around every corner, when in reality Americans are just as likely to be killed by lightning strikes or peanut allergies.
The video is part of Homeland Security’s $10 million dollar “See Something, Say Something” program that encourages Americans to report “suspicious activity,” which in every case throughout history has been a trait of oppressive, dictatorial regimes.
In the course of the 10 minute clip, a myriad of different behaviors are characterized as terrorism, including opposing surveillance, using a video camera, talking to police officers, wearing hoodies, driving vans, writing on a piece of paper, and using a cell phone recording application.
Despite encouraging viewers not to pay attention to a person’s race in determining whether or not they may be a terrorist, almost all of the scenarios in the clip proceed to portray white people as the most likely terrorists. Bizarrely, nearly every single one of the “patriotic” Americans who reports on their fellow citizen is either black, Asian or Arab. Imagine if the video had portrayed every terrorist as an Arab and every patriotic snoop as white, there’d be an outcry and rightly so, but this strange reversal must have been deliberate on the part of the DHS, but why? Is this merely political correctness taken to the extreme or is something deeper at work?”

I do know that the efforts of this man has produced prosperity and jobs for tens of thousands of people, a lot of regular joe schmoe sixpacks that started at home depot later became millionaires- I met one personally when I was a stockbroker who started at the bottom and eventually became just a store manager. He was worth over 3 million. As I said his charitable giving is incredible. I’m sure he is not a perfect man by any means but the sheer volume of good things and benefit that this man has done for people, his employees, the wealth he has created which is in the 401k of many an average joe, and for this city far outweighs whatever bad he may have done.

What’s your point? Besides you mook, as I said earlier, let’s drill the rest of the world’s oil first and we will still have ours when it’s depleted. I think the time limit for the middle east is less than 20 years now. Meanwhile, the Permian Basin is STILL teaming with oil. As are our off coast Gulf Coast “reserves.”
Are you really that dense and uneducated? Have you never wondered why, even when the Republicans controlled the Presidency and both houses drilling didn’t just go batsh*t? Why we still remained “dependent” on “foreign oil?”
Have you EVER tried to think strategically?

Jay,
With Obama “ostensibly” running the country, you need to get enough fish to last for 18 months at least. Learn how to dry it, salt it or can it, so that you will have enough protein during the remainder of the Obama regime.
Just remember who has passed legislation and who has only complained about how bad things are. I don’t think that senator Reid or Chuck Shumer’s words on the floor of the senate today were much of an olive branch and hardly constituted the “working together” relationship that Obama has worked oh, oh so hard to foster, as the oh, oh so intelligent and great leader that he is. Looks like the Democrats are trying to alienate the people they say they want to work with.
That’s not wise, if working with someone is what you’re trying to do. It should be obvious by now that Democrats don’t want to work together. They want their plan, but THEY are so isolated and worried about the polls themselves that THEY can’t even pass a plan in their own senate, nor can Obama submit one on paper. THEY are feckless.
Back to the idea of working with people. You alienate people when you have given up working with them, and when you go to war with them. That’s what Democrats are doing–Jay, are you listening? –and that’s vile.

Oh, and the middle east is not about to run out of oil in 20 years. You can’t possibly be that damn stupid. Or can you? Saudi Arabia has oil to last quite a long time as do Iran, Iraq, and other nations. UAE is about to run out as they are a very small country and that’s why they transformed their economy to being the playground of the middle east from a oil kingdom.

Doom, sorry. As much as I personally know that Marcus and his wife have helped many, he did not make his money in some godly devine way. He had a partner, he had workers and others. Not everything he did affected all people postitively. He’s a human being who did some things right. There are many average joes who may not have money but who perform great works. Teachers who inspire kids. People who help family in needs. I see no need in my world to acclaim that business leaders are great merely because they create wealth. There are plenty of contrary examples. Bernie Madoff made a fortune, brought economic wealth to a number of people and did great charitable good in the world too. Marcus has done good with his wealth for many but that does not make him a better man than an average joe.

They’ll deal…in the end it will have zero teeth..It’ll be called the “great get me re-elected act”…it’ll have higher taxes and spending cuts to never be enacted in the future..or present…both sides will spin it as a win….unless someone has the will to shut-er-down…I’m not convinced it’ll be the end of the end..remember the stimulus both sides agreed on to keep unemployment below 8%?..to believe either side in whole is naive.

faced with financial disaster the tea party crowd decided to take the weekend off. then again what’s the point it wasn’t like they were going to do anything anyway. Recent polls have shown that Democrats are much more willing to compromise than the ideologically pure tea bag sorts. It looks like one group is willing to work and the other side wants to hold it’s breath till it gets it’s way. at this point I hope the deal get’s done that lets the president raise the debt ceiling on his own. twenty twelve will be here soon and I’m betting that David Brooks is going to look like a genius. The Republicans had the chance of a life time, but couldn’t be bothered to come to work. Ever notice that people that insist on having everything go their way wear out their welcome pretty damned quick.

Are you ready for some football?
Depends on what you call football lol. I’ve always been a fan of college football, but was lost as a pro fan after the strike in the late 80’s (myriad of reasons not important). I have just recently “re-become” a fan of the pro’s since Blank bought the Falcons and I have someone to cheer for again.
That was a lot of damn words just to say YES wasn’t it?

Sometimes the bufoonery gets so out of hand that its just wayyyyy too funny. Take the professor of knowitallogy with his 7:49 post declaring that Fox news is not a media outlet but a straight up propoganda machine of the republican party.
Fox news as Mr. Buffoon, uh I mean Mr. Professor of knowitallogy, is owned by News corp. and Rupert Murdoch. So who is the single largest recipient of political donations from News corp and its employees and their families? I’ll give you a clue Perfesser. The last name of the politician begins with an O. Still can’t figure it out there genius? I’ll give you another clue. The last letter of his last name ends in an a. Stretch that 2nd brain cell and perhaps then you can figure it out. Just maybe but I’m certainly not counting on it. And what political party received more money from Rupert Murdoch’s News corp and its employees? I’ll give you another clue perfesser. The party name begins with a D.
I’m sure the perfesser is also a perfesser of logic since he is after all the perfesser of knowitallogy in all of his magnificence and brilliance. So now I would like the perfesser to explain to me the logic of how Fox news, a company owned by News corp is a Republican propoganda machine when we all know that News corp and its employees gave more money to the Ds and the single largest recipient of political donations was a certain politician whose name begins with an O. Explain away perfesser. Enlighten us!

I guess you failed to note a prior post: If it makes you feel better I’ll say there are great men like him, and then men like me….. I’m just an average Joe who has not brought nearly the great things or positively affected so many people as he has

I never said Bernie was perfect. I’m sure he’s far from it as are all of us. You think he’s no better than the average Joe and I just respectfully disagree. I just think he is a great man in that the volume of good he has brought to so many people in the way of jobs, wealth, charitable giving, taxes paid to various city, state, and federal coffers which support education and social spending, the amount of sheer wealth that he and his company have created for joe and jane sixpack in their 401k savings, etc.

Thulsa, I believe, was talking about how much oil (in years supply) is left in the various countries.
Here is a good chart that might bring that pronunciamento into question.
The question is not how many years’ supply we have left, but rather will we be able to afford what is left. Now I know Thulsa, being the insurance executive his is, doesn’t really have to worry about the price of oil. It’s just the rest of us who need to be worried.

Doom… perhaps you need to analyze your claim a little more. Follow The Money: Why News Corp Donated To So Many Democrats …The real story here isn’t that News Corp donated to Democrats. It is why they donated to Democrats. News Corp did nothing unusual. Every corporation donates to powerful elected officials regardless of party in order to sway the oversight of their industry. Every corporation uses their money to buy influence on the political process, and the Supreme Court’s Citizen’s United decision will only make the problem worse.
Before you start to think that Rupert Murdoch is some sort of closet liberal, keep in mind that his personal political donations went 100% to Republicans. News Corp used their money to influence those who make the laws and perform oversight on the agencies who regulate them.
The important story isn’t that News Corp donated slightly more to Democrats during a time when they were in the majority. The dirty little secret that every American should know and be outraged by is that their democracy is owned, bought, and paid for by corporate America.

Of course you did. You take the time to single me out for your so called derision because I whip your ass every time. (Oh, and I’m not too much of a wussy to write the word ass. I don’t tip toe, I’m a man and say what I think. Take notes.) You lie about your thoughts of me like you have to lie for your dogma. you lie when the truth would serve you better.
As to your oil reserve thing? Do you get ALL your info from Wiki pedia? You DO know don’t you that anyone can add or subtract anything they want there don’t you? LOL After Sarah Palin’s “famous” account of Paul Revere’s ride, her supporters went to Wiki and changed it to reflect what she said.
I trust Wiki about as much as I trust the Huffington Post or George Soro’s (I used left wing fanatics on purpose, you would be offended if I cited YOUR propaganda sites).
But, hey, thanks for playing. Now you know and knowing is half the battle………….

Soothsayer,
There is no source for your chart. What I quoted was from Wikipedia and that source included new finds yet to come. It only counts proven reserves which can be extracted. And sooth I’m not wealthy by any means. I’m on a 10 year plan to retire early so I certainly plan on being wealthy and I’m on the way but as of now I have a ways to go. Living in a paid off house helps. I worry about the price of oil not for me but for the poor and middle class in this country that are living paycheck to paycheck. It definitely hurts those people.

Texas lawmakers cut sex ed from two six-month courses to a single unit of “abstinence only” education. But early indications showed that the program wasn’t working. In fact, teens in almost all high school grades were having more sex after undergoing the abstinence only program. By 2007, Texas had the highest teen birth rate in the nation.
Nevertheless, the program continued. By 2009, 94 percent of Texas schools, which at the time were educating more than 3.7 million students, were giving no sex ed whatsoever beyond “abstinence only,” a curriculum that includes emphasizing that birth control doesn’t work.
The results? Teen pregnancy in Texas went up — higher than before “abstinence only,” and more than 50 percent higher than the national average. Even more troubling was that repeat teen pregnancy went up — to the point that it, too, led the nation. It turns out that Texas kids thought that “if birth control doesn’t work, why use it?”

I stand by my earlier predictions that oil will be trading in the $200 – 300 ($6.00 – $9.00/gallon) barrel range by 2015. With exponentially increasing demand and falling supply, what else can be the result?
If we, as a country, had any brains we would be working with the feverishness of the Manhattan Project the transition to a solar/hydrogen energy policy. Instead of wasting time, money, and precious resources trying to corner a dwindling hydrocarbon energy supply.
Think of it this way: in the 40s and 50s the country switched from coal to diesel for most transportation. It is now time to switch from petroleum to solar/hydrogen.
Unfortunately, when the “ship hits the sand” it will be too late and untold suffering will result.

keep up,
Damn I hate it when I agree with you. yes. All politicians are bought and paid for by political donations. No argument there and yes the Dems get just as much money and in fact in the last election they got more money than the Repubs from corporate America. And news corp. like any other company put money into the coffers of both parties- nothing unusual there as you pointed out. But still the fact remains overall that between the company and its employees Obama got the most money and the Dems got more money than the Repubs. And this is news corp who the liberals just hate. My only point to the perfessor is that given this level of donation its ridiculous to ascertain that Fox is the propoganda machine of one party. And hell even if that were true then that just makes the scorecard 5-1 with liberals getting preferential treatment from the 3 networks and CNN and especially MSNBC.
