Is deal imminent? Did someone blink?

Rumors are that a deal’s a cookin’.

Rumors are it’s for $3 trillion in spending cuts, with revenue increases to be adopted later. Or to be adopted now. Or maybe not adopted at all.

As the Washington Post reports, that latter possibility has Senate Democrats up in arms:

After what was described as a rambunctious hour-long meeting with Senate Democrats, Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) announced that his caucus opposes what he called the “agreement, potential agreement” because the outlines so far do not include sufficient guarantees of increased tax revenues.

“There’s no agreement. They’re working toward an agreement,” he said, adding that he received a call from a White House official during the meeting that confirmed the president had not reached a final agreement with Boehner.

The meeting included a presentation by White House Budget Director Jacob Lew, who was pilloried by Democrats who contended that Obama was giving away deep cuts to entitlements without any agreement on taxes. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), while declining to address the specifics of Lew’s talks, said she opposed the White House direction and instead would continue to support the option offered by Reid and McConnell — a backup plan to raise the debt ceiling in three phases over more than a year.

Reid said his caucus would oppose any plan that did not include increased tax revenue, questioning whether Obama had gone back on his pledge to include “balance” in the final deal.

“The president always talked about balance, that there had to be some fairness in this, that this can’t be all cuts,” Reid said. “There has to be a balance. There has to be some revenue and cuts. My caucus agrees with that. I hope that the president sticks with that. I’m confident that he will.”

I wish I could say that I was as confident as Reid claims to be.

On the other hand, Grover Norquist has made an interesting statement to the Post editorial board, stating point blank that a deal allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire would not be considered a tax increase and thus not in violation of the pledge taken by so many Republicans.

“Not continuing a tax cut is not technically a tax increase,” he said.

So does it violate the pledge?

“We wouldn’t hold it that way.”

The Post has released an audiotape of the discussion, just to ensure that there’s no doubt about what Norquist said. And there isn’t.

Later, though, Americans for Tax Reform did a moonwalk on those statements:

“ATR opposes all tax increases on the American people. Any failure to extend or make permanent the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, in whole or in part, would clearly increase taxes on the American people. It is a violation of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge to trade temporary tax reductions for permanent tax hikes.”

So who the hell knows?

I do know I’m going fishing next week and will be totally out of touch with the real world beginning Saturday. When we come off the river July 30, I guess we’ll see what’s left standing.

Bosch, I don’t hate Obama, just don’t agree with many policies, just think he is in over is head, seems like a brilliant guy, doesn’t mean he’s cut out to be POTUS though… He’s hasn’t done well bringing people together from both sides, like Clinton could do… Of course it’s not easy bringing Republicans and Democrats together but the best presidents always find a way to get it done…

Bosch, Obama is not ending the war. Obama’s continuation of Bush’s policies, which were in place well before his taking office will end the Iraq war (if it truly does ever end). Obama didn’t have a clue what to do with the mess so he just continued the course that was laid out before he got there because he had absolutely no confidence in himself or his foreign policy team. He was actually wise in this respect. US foreign policy has been a disaster under Obama. We are now, in the eye of the world much, much weaker than we have ever been and the rest of the world likes it that way. We are now seen as nothing but a country of capitulating pansies. Obama can claim this view of us by the world as his own. He made it.

Before you reply, understand that I cannot stand Bush and I don’t think we should have been in Iraq in the first place. Bush was not a conservative in my eye.

Indeed, and as I’ve pointed out on here before there is an iron clad law in politics and statecraft: any woman who enters that sphere has ALL the balls in any given situation, to the exclusion of the balls of any men who happen to be present. The Iron Lady herself is the classic example.

Much of the money sitting offshore is from operations based in other countries……..and it is profit AFTER taxes…..in those countries…….they get their cut first. No different than a foreign national doing business in the US….we get our cut first, then that corp can do what it wants in it’s home country depending on THEIR laws.

The idae of a tax holiday is actually beneficial…….but too many are ignorant of that benefit so they poo poo the idea.

In June, the Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights released a report alleging that workers producing clothing for Walmart, Target, Macy’s, Kohl’s and Hanes at a factory in Jordan have been routinely beaten, underpaid and forced to work hours in excess of what the local law allows. The report added that workers have been forced to live in bed bug-infested dormitories that lack heat and hot water, despite the snow and ice that are a feature of local winters.

The report also alleged a pattern of widespread sexual abuse of female employees at the Classic Brands factory complex. The factory employs some 4,800 people, mostly guest workers from South Asia

Absolutely correct….thanks to unions and others who fought to get regulations in place to change this country. Regulations which a number of people now want to chop away with an ax or completely remove rather than to use a scapel to get rid of the outdated regs or to smartly implement additional protections. We also need to strenghten the ability of the government to stop these products from coming into the country and to go after the companies which purchase them for sale in this country. If those goods cannot be sold here, the pressure will help change those abuses.

Smart regulation is good for business as many businessmen will tell you and many of them use regulations against their competitors to try to keep a level playing field. Is regulation perfect? Nope, and there are many reasons for that…..some of them Republican or regulators who “don’t believe” in regulation and try to undercut them.

Sink: MY messiah? I’M a liberal? Well I guess to simpletons such as yourself. But to the rest of the world I’m an Independent. I know that’s a tough concept for you since independent means thinking for yourself, not tuning into Rush or clicking on Huffington to learn each day what you are SUPPOSED to think so I forgive you. It’s not your fault that the Good Lord didn’t endow you with to much in the brain department……………

As to JOBS? How poetically beautiful that you use offshore drilling to ask that question since YOUR messiahs have been sending all the American jobs to other Countries. But you are to dim to get it so another quiet chuckle will go unheard……….

F. Sinkwich,

Those 10 rigs also took a lot of blue collar jobs and tax money with them when they left. Regarding the drilling in the gulf the reason oil companies pulled out is because the Obama administration as of a month or so ago had approved a mere 7 permits for the year in the Gulf. The other issue is that in the Bush administration it took 30-60 days to get a permit approved and under the Obama administration its taking 9 months or more. This is no accident. The Obama administration is deliberately doing what it can to keep us from developing our own oil resources. Sometimes you just gotta wonder why this guy’s energy policies are so virulently anti-American.

More libroolery in California shutting off water to the central valley to (allegedly) save some bait fish:

“would cause an estimated $1.15 billion dollar loss in agriculture-related wages and eliminate as many as 40,000 jobs in farm-related industries in the San Joaquin Valley alone, where most of the nation’s produce and nut crops are grown, said Lester Snow, director of the Department of Water Resources. ”

Gotta luv me some regs!

The federal government sent $478 billion to their state and local counterparts last year, according to a report issued Wednesday by the Pew Center on the States. Next month, states are expecting to get $10.4 billion in college tuition assistance alone. But that money might not come if the debt ceiling is not raised.

At least one rating agency has warned that states could suffer if the federal government defaults. Any downgrade of the nation’s stellar credit rating could pull down the Triple A rating of five states — Maryland, New Mexico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, Moody’s Investors Service said Tuesday.

I think you should ask the folks on the Gulf Coast about that. Folks like fishermen and resort owners and restaurant owners, or pretty much ANYONE who doesn’t get a paycheck from oil wells that cut corners, blow up, and cost everyone ELSE their lively hood.

It’s actually funny. He could go on for hours, right? But the only thing he could think of to actually mention was a bill that hasn’t even gone into effect yet. Yep, that’s some really onerous regulation alright!

Sinkwich, and how do you feel about the Republican regulation of abortion clinics in Kansas?

For the record: a citation to a claim about one bad regulation here or one bad one there (if they are indeed bad, because you clearly have only presented unsupported claims) does not disprove all government regulation bad.

I wish no ill will on the employees of Home Depot, but I wouldn’t throw Marcus an old moldy donought if he were starving under a bridge. He’s a first rate pr*ck in my opinion and he’s a first rate hypocrite politically. Just my opinion.

Thank you. I figured you would come to your senses but I didn’t know would would see ALL the light all at once.

Neither a full bow nor genuflection is required in my presence. A simple, discreet nodding of the head is sufficient.

Anything else I can help you with? Any other myth’s you need dis-spelled? I have a couple hours until my wife gets home and reviews the document I need to send later tonight. I’d rather play some Call of Duty: Black Ops, but I’m here if you need me.

Not only does Brown feel Wynn’s assessment is wrong, he says the comments are somewhat misplaced since much of Wynn’s business is not generated in the U.S. “Go parse the words of the report: 70 percent of Wynn Resorts revenue is from China and a nice chunk of the other 30 percent is from him flying in Chinese businessmen to the Vegas strip,” Brown notes.

What’s the corporate tax rate in China.

Doggone/GA,

Calling Bernie Marcus a liar? He’s one of the greatest citizens Atlanta has ever had. He is well known for his philanthropy and charitable giving. He donated the aquarium to Atlanta and he also personally funded a stroke unit for Grady hospital which had not been in existence before he built it. His donation alone to the city of atlanta for the aquarium I think personally costed him 250 million or more. This man and his company have created a company that has given jobs to tens of thousands of employees, which created incredible amounts of wealth and successful people and which over its decades in business has paid tens of millions in taxes if not billions.

Who are you to call this great man a liar? What have you done in your lifetime that compares to all the goodness and prosperity that this man’s life has brought to so many people and to this city in particular? If Mr. Marcus is stating that the onerous regulation has gotten so ridiculous that he and Arthur could not start Home Depot again given today’s regulatory environment then I damn well believe the man.

Sink ducks the Kansas question….. argues government regulation bad for national corporations, argues about a CA regulation but when it comes to Republican regulation in Kansas…suddenly its “let Kansas sort that out”. Why is this intellectual dishonesty not surprising?
