Mick : “Things could be a lot worse, I mean you could’ve been born into the middle ages in a life as a serf. Unfortunately, that is where the republicans would like to take us, we will not let it happen…”
In the Middle Ages of course the exploitation and domination of the people — the serfs, the peasants — was complete and absolute. By the church, by the land owners. But now we live in the age of the capitalists, half way between the domination of the middle ages and something we know not what. We’re stuck. Property is no longer dominated by the nobles and the church, but now it’s dominated by the capitalists and the wealthy. This is all just Marx 101.
But the new ruse, the one that the politicians — of both political parties in the US — want us to swallow is just a new superstition, which amounts to: get down on your knees and offer up your tribute to the new god: the logic of the market. And it will be our new god.
Sounds great, no?

I find it disturbing that all you liberals collectively attack the face of the conservative media with your vicious jihhad against Murdoch like a bunch of Islamists. However, you peopple are so predictable in your lock-stepped campaign of demeaning illustration and denouncements. It does speak volumes about your hateful character.

Mick,
I’ve seen South Park, watch it with my kids (I know, I know, bad bad parent), but I’ve also never seen American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, or any other reality TV show except like cooking shows. During the summer, I rarely turn on my TV.

Yeah Donovan, what a valid comparison — Islamist jihadists and people criticizing a guy for hacking the cell phone of murdered teenage girls.
Personally, I find those comparisons disturbing.

Great minds, ditto that on American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, or any other reality TV show. The only reality show I’m interested in is my own….

My question is above and beyond the article….
Why do you have a problem with keeping an eye out for home grown terrorists?
Can you answer the actual question without dodging it?

Your analogy is interesting but I have a different and opposite conclusion. I believe an independent analysis of communism as it was applied in Russia, China, and Cuba would deterimine the standard of living in those societies was much closer to that of the middle ages than Capitalism during the same period. Two of those countries abandoned Communism in favor of Capitalism. Words and excuses will not overcome examples and facts. The U.S. is the richest country in the world.

Fell sorry all you wish, but spend some time thinking about why it is you think we shouldn’t pursue domestic terrorists….
It makes me wonder where your loyalties really reside, as they apparently don’t reside with your fellow Americans.

Mighty Righty: I have read the article, and links, and I do not find a particular problem with the DHS’s classifications. I do think it is important to make sure threats are identified. Please try to remember the DHS is a Bush initiative. If they are focused on things you think they should not be focused on, tough. They aren’t created for your amusement or demagoguery. They are there to identify threats and help protect the general US public from those threats.
I think it speaks to how successful we are at combating terrorism that our most terrible threats are from nutjobs in our own country. So cheer up, dude.

Hi Mighty, I think you’re right to bring up the examples of Russia, China, etc. And we could also include Singapore, Brazil, and others, in that group, too. Part of what we’re seeing right now is the adoption of capitalism by formerly absolutist cultures and civilizations, but without adopting the cultural norms of liberal democracy, which is a very serious development.
Historical development seems to show that capitalism needed the virtues of Western civilization to emerge in full form, but now what we’re seeing is that cultures from outside that sphere are taking it up but without adopting the cultural norms that went with it and seemed to be necessary for it. The only question is, can these cultures do capitalism EVEN BETTER than the West by marrying it to their historically absolutist traditions. And the early evidence is not encouraging, as there’s every reason to think that with this move these cultures have hit on a new formula that could end up being extremely dominant in the world for a very long time, and not with outcomes that we would find desirable. In other words what we’ll end up with then is something far different that the capitalism that its defenders in America have traditionally envisioned.

Every “home grown” nut job for the last ten years have been muslims most of whom were naturalized citizens. So don’t hand me that “home grown” BS. I don’t know what George Bush has to do with the HSA unless Obama appointed him to relace Janet Napolitano.

For your reading enjoyment:
Despite encouraging viewers not to pay attention to a person’s race in determining whether or not they may be a terrorist, almost all of the scenarios in the clip proceed to portray white people as the most likely terrorists. Bizarrely, nearly every single one of the “patriotic” Americans who reports on their fellow citizen is either black, Asian or Arab. Imagine if the video had portrayed every terrorist as an Arab and every patriotic snoop as white, there’d be an outcry and rightly so, but this strange reversal must have been deliberate on the part of the DHS, but why? Is this merely political correctness taken to the extreme or is something deeper at work?
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the DHS’ own internal documents list predominantly white conservative groups as the most likely terrorists, such as Ron Paul supporters, gun owners, gold bullion enthusiasts, and a myriad of other comparatively banal political interests that are largely the domain of white middle class Americans.
This has little to do with the color of a person’s skin, and everything to do with the fact that white, middle class Americans are the biggest roadblock when it comes to Big Sis expanding its control over every facet of American society.

Mighty: “You obviously don’t keep up with the news. Jared Loughner is/was a well known LIBERAL nut job.”
C’mon, Mighty, this is silly. Do you really think that?
Surely you realize that it’s not really possible to speak of a political orientation in the normal sense in the case of a paranoid schizophrenic who’s completely gone into a psychotic episode.
If we wanted to try to translate his bizarre fantasies into some kind of political language that’s familiar to us, we’d probably end up with some type of radical libertarianism (concern about devaluing currency, law, etc.). But this is a vain attempt and very misleading. So you really should desist from repeating nonsense about Jared Loughner.

It is misleading and simplistic to say that capitalism requires or celebrates predators.
One thing capitalism does require is a willingness to let businesses fail.
Capitalism works best when there are enough competent people assertively, proactively, and energetically pursuing their own interests. Ideally, these should be traders who seek to exchange value for value, not predators or power seekers. Under mixed-economy statism such as we have now, predators and power seekers can use government to help them get what they want, and this can be very destructive. Under true laissez-faire capitalism, even predators and power seekers have to act like traders if they are to profit or to gain or hold positions of strength, and this limits their destructive potential.
