Judge: Ga. seeks ‘climate of hostility, fear, mistrust, insecurity’

U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash has blocked enforcement of the most aggressive law enforcement provisions of Georgia’s new illegal immigration law, ruling that they interfere with federal responsibilities to enforce immigration law.

“The [state’s} claim that the new criminal statutes will prevent exploitation of illegal aliens is gross hypocrisy,” Thrash concluded. “The apparent legislative intent is to create such a climate of hostility, fear, mistrust and insecurity that all illegal aliens will leave Georgia.”

That’s pretty much on the nose. And while the judge didn’t offer a conclusion about whether such a goal was good or bad, he did rule that such steps, if they are taken, must be taken by the federal government, not by the states. As a result, “state and local law enforcement officers and officials have no authorization to arrest, detain or prosecute anyone based upon Sections 7 and 8 of HB 87 while this injunction remains in effect.”

However, 21 other sections of the law will go into effect July 1.

In a footnote in his ruling, Thrash pointed out an affidavit filed by Lewis Smith, a 23-year veteran of law enforcement in Georgia and the police chief of the small town of Uvalda. According to Thrash, Smith’s statement “outlines the problems that rural, small town Georgia law enforcement officers will have in trying to enforce Section 8.”

Smith’s statement does that, and a lot more.

“This is going to be devastating to my community and to many other areas of rural Georgia,” the chief’s affidavit reads. “I believe this law will open the door to racial profiling if it is implemented. There are a lot of good police officers, but there are some bad ones out there too, and if the bad ones don’t like Hispanics, for whatever reason, they will have the ability to try to verify that person’s immigration status. I believe that officers in many small towns will rely on physical appearance or way of talking (accent) to determine whether to stop someone and attempt to verify the person’s immigration status.”

Smith also explained the burden that enforcing HB 87 would place on him and other law enforcement officers. After talking with fellow officers, he said, he has come to the conclusion that “police officers in many towns will feel compelled to always exercise their authority to ask about immigration status, making many communities less safe and stretching already thin police forces to their limit.”

In Smith’s case, he is the lone officer in Uvalda, a town of 600 in southeast Georgia. The closest jail is 40 miles away in Soperton, which means that transporting a suspected illegal immigrant to jail, booking the person and returning home would pull Smith off patrol for at least two hours and 15 minutes.

“Because Uvalda is such a small town, everyone in town knows when I’ve left town, and the criminal element often takes advantage of this time to commit crimes,” he told the court.

And about that criminal element?

“The criminal element in Uvalda does not include the population HB 87 targets. In Uvalda, even though we are a small town, we have a big prescription drug problem resulting in break-ins, burglaries and even suicides.” The Hispanics in his town, on the other hand, “are law-abiding people. They have family and kids.”

“In small towns like Uvalda,” Smith told the court, “life is more personal. As chief, I get to know people for who they are, rather than just a statistic or a word such as ‘illegal.’ The immigrants in my community have children, and they just need a chance, just like everyone else does.”

Notice he did NOT say “all illegal AND legal aliens”.

So, what’s the problem?

We want ONLY the illegals to leave.

But alas, the SCOTUS will have the last say on all of this and we will either regain control of our borders or cease over time to be a sovereign nation.

Our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be the ones to pay the price.

Let’s imagine that we were talking about thieves instead of people who have broken immigration law. Would it be ok to create a climate in which by due process thieves felt uncomfortable and left? I hope so.

Now that Mr. Obama has clearly said that it is his responsibility to enforce the law and to secure the border, let’s consider how he is doing?

Why s a Ga. Law needed if he were doing his job?

Scout from downstairs…

The case you make is already taken care of by the 287(g) program. When someone’s arrested and found to be in the country without legal status, ICE puts a detainer on them and begins deportation proceedings once their criminal case is adjudicated. We don’t need any additional laws to accomplish that. All that’s needed is to train more officers and adequately fund that program.

As an aside, I’m guessing your mental midgetry causes you to use the “Brosepuss” when responding to something I’ve said. If I can show your respect and not call you out of your name, even though I have good knowledge on what your real name is, you can at least be a grownup and show me the same courtesy. However, if the infant in you can’t be contained, then I’ll chalk up your actions as the immaturity of my elders.

Recon

From downstairs. I don’t really care much for that provision of Medicaid myself. Under the grounds of inadmissibility in the INA, there’s a charge for being a public charge, or being like a ward of the state. It’s quite hard for us to charge someone with that particular charge, even when we have proof they’ve applied for Medicaid. I understand the health implications of denying health services to those in need of care, but there’s gotta be something the suits can do to cut back on the use of Medicaid by those who are not paying for it.

The world of the illegals “out there” and those in the urban areas are different worlds. The personal distance “out there” goes a long, long way toward mitigating that sense of isolation and, yes, fear. In my hometown when I was growing up there were no “Hispanics.” The story of how the first ones came in is rather interesting to me and there is a personal element here.

Here’s how it goes for those interested. A fellow was passing through and had a wreck in front of Mama’s house. It was pretty serious. She went down and held his hand comforting him as best she could until help arrived. He was in the hospital several weeks. Everybody in town wanted to know how he was doing since he might as well have been a Martian, he was that exotic, Mama was there the whole time with him. When he was released, he decided to stay where the people had been so good to him, Mama being his “saint.” He went to work, doing odd jobs and soon enough got a job with “the city” working in maintenance. He brought some of his family up. Soon enough there were more and more relatives coming in, each and every one screened by Tomas. He soon opened a couple of businesses. Their kids went to school, did well, and two of them became teachers. Another became a nurse. Most, though, in the first generation worked in the local furniture factory and/or did farm labor. Any problem and Tomas is called in. He was elected to the city council (he was able to get his citizenship papers without a lot of hassle, having himself come legally and having followed the rules and regs.) It came time to start up a Catholic congregation and Mama donated a plot of ground for it, and gave the Bishop hell until he took care of business himself. Tomas pretty much runs his own INS…mess up and get sent home. Period. How many are legal and how many are not? Who knows. Those anchor babies though speak fluent English with a North Mississippi twang you could cut with a hatchet, Spanish with a Monterrey accent just as native, have married amongst the locals.

A success story? Unusual? Perhaps, but I’m inclined to think not. As the Uvalda policeman says, given a chance…

Is it that farmers weren’t taking advantage of them, or these workers weren’t coming here under those programs? I mean…

BRIDGES: Well, this is – there’s a two-pronged issue with that. One is many farmers tell me that that program doesn’t work because several of the farmers have small acreages of produce to be harvested and that program is extremely cumbersome to complete. Now, some of the larger onion farmers who have acres and acres have been able to successfully use that program, but the majority of the smaller farms just – it’s just a cumbersome program to use. And the other part of this is that we have people who have been here for several years.

Bring on ICE, The Border Patrol and enable all Law Enforcement employess to arrest and deport illegals immediately.

Not gonna happen. As a nation that believes in laws, even people present without inspection have the right to appear before an immigration judge in different circumstances. There are few select groups who don’t have that right, one being people who enter the US under the Visa Waiver Program. It’s not profiling if you have an accurate description for a particular subject you’re looking for. Do you happen to have an accurate description that will apply to all allegedly 12 million illegal immigrants here in the US? If you have one, I’m sure my colleagues would love to have it. It would make our lives and jobs much, much easier.

That is NOT profiling. Profiling is, for instance, stopping every car that has an Hispanic man in it on the off-chance that they might be carrying drugs.

Profiling is done in the absence of a known crime, in the hopes of finding someone who is breaking the law. What you outlined is a search based on the KNOWN CHARATERISTICS of an ACTUAL criminal.

There are different levels of crime. You have civil offenses, misdemeanor and felony offenses. Generally criminal offenses fall under either misdemeanor or felony labels. I have yet to find someone who can show that crossing the border illegally is a misdemeanor or felony. Anytime I’ve done casework for someone who’s done as such, it’s a civil crime. I have yet to come across a misdemeanor illegal immigrant or felony illegal immigrant charge. If you can show me where either one of those exists, then prove me wrong.

So when the cons have nothing…. it’s easier to say “well we wont even talk about ….[some implied nasty]” or “and I use that term loosely” Its the same as when the Birther in Chiffon implies that there is some being “hidden” by the President. Have you ever thought that a German Tourist driving along the coast in Sarasota, FL would not speak much English, not have a driver’s license, or proof of insurance. Does that automatically make that person an illegal immigrant? You need to know what would make a person an illegal immigrant in the first place before you try to go criminalizing people all over the country. I bet you didn’t know that someone could be lawfully permitted to enter the United States, not overstay their admission, but still be an illegal immigrant even though they have an admission stamp in their passport.

ty

The part of 8 USC you’re referring to would apply to people caught by ICE. They do time in the federal pen, then they’re deported. I’ve processed many people who have previous deportations and are now either residents or citizens. They have an arrest on their record, but the charge does not show a criminal charge. There is no misdemeanor or felony level for present without inspection or deportation. It’s a civil charge. A civil charge can involve jail time.

The sad thing is that there are those who would sell this whole country to outsiders for the right price. My awakening was years ago when I read a story about how many of our cultural landmarks like the Sears Tower and the Empire State Building were owned by foreigners. Translations:

…If you bring fresh donuts into my office every morning, then you are a-ok, whether here as a felon or a friend

The 33-page report is marked “For Official Use Only” and describes an “Investigation of improper disclosure of For Official Use Only information from the Comprehensive Review Working Group draft report.”

It was that report that famously was quoted as affirming “70 percent” of the nation’s military members believe the repeal of the long-standing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” practice of allowing homosexuals to serve as long as they kept their sexual lifestyle choices to themselves would have either “a neutral or positive impact on unit cohesion, readiness, effectiveness and morale…”

Take a guided tour into the future of the U.S. military once homosexuality is welcomed with open arms. Read Whistleblower’s special issue, “DROPPING THE ‘H’-BOMB,” online FREE here!

However, the IG documents how the co-chair of the commission working on the assessment, Jeh Johnson, “read portions of ‘an early draft’ of the executive summary … to a former news anchor, a close personal friend visiting Mr. Johnson’s home” THREE DAYS BEFORE service members even were given the survey.”

Upton Sinclair (Unsung)

June 27th, 2011
10:23 pm

Sinclair was disappointed by the impact of The Jungle. It was written as a cry for social justice, stressing the importance of taking care of society’s working class by redefining human rights. It had also depicted the corrupting nature of capitalism, a game where only a very few can reach the “American Dream” exclusively by the exploitation of expendable immigrant workers. Unfortunately for Sinclair, the public reacted with their stomachs. Congress enacted the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act of 1906, but the book did not do anything major pertaining to improving workers’ rights, and democratic socialism never became a major American political party. Although The Jungle was supposed to be what Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin did for slavery, The Jungle did not achieve its paramount goal. There are several reasons for its failure. For one, The Jungle’s realism undermines its socialist message. The concrete examples of dangerous meat products are considered a more important matter to take care of than the abstract message that oppressing immigrant workers is wrong and should be solved by converting everyone to the ideals of Socialism. Another reason was the discrimination and alienation of African Americans in The Jungle; although racism was still rampant in the early 1900’s, many people were offended by the book’s way of victimizing blacks, thus discouraging some would-be socialists. Driven by his want to better society, he wrote The Jungle as a means to convince others, especially appealing to the middle and upper classes, to convert their political philosophy to one that was then called the American Socialist Party. Upton Sinclair had become so blind to his own faith in socialism that he had substantially biased the book, having published the book punctuated with distorting “facts.” A case in point was the government meat inspectors’ accusal of Sinclair’s testimony: some of the sausages supposedly had human parts accidentally inserted in them. After inspecting the very same meat packing plants (Armour & Co., Swift, Morris, and Hammond) and finding no evidence of some “facts”, some seeds of doubt had begun to germinate, instigating some critics to condemn him of being a propagandist, and even worse, a phony. As distrust and skepticism from the government officials brought about doubt to Upton Sinclair’s works, supporters of the “beef trust” took immediate action to dismantle Upton Sinclair’s credibility as a writer. His reputation was so tarnished that even the audience who initially appreciated The Jungle would sneer at him and even today, the damage still takes its toll: “apart from The Jungle, Sinclair’s works have been largely forgotten, or perhaps simply mislaid, his name confused with that of Sinclair Lewis, the author of Main Street, Babbitt, and Dodsworth” (Denby 32).

Actually, Chuck is right, more right than he realizes. I was relying on annual data for the numbers on Bush employment. The monthly figures, Jan 01 to Jan 09, were 137.2 million to 142.2 million, or an increase of 4.5 million.

theeyeshaveit,

From your own link the article states that jobs lost during the Bush recession which began at the end of 2007. What you stated is misleading in that overall throughout his tenure Bush created net jobs. You also have to look at the fact that during several of the early Bush years we were at full employment or near full employment. Its difficult to add jobs when you’re already at full employment. Its like asking someone who averages 98 on their exams to raise their average. Much easier for someone who is averaging 77 on their exams to raise their average.

The red shows the growing job losses by month from the end of 2007 through January of 2009. There were over 4.5 million jobs lost during that period, all of which occurred BEFORE President Obama took office. And the trend was getting worse, big time.

Did you all hear that huge sigh of relief today? I think it came from under the Dome and from the Governor’s mansion. Those boys just might have just missed a bullet. But, that will be true only if all the illegal crop pickers come back to save the summer and late summer crops. They may not. They might still be on the fence. But maybe the gool ol’ boys can do some bidness and keep Georgia farmers from plowing millions upon millions of dollars worth of crops under this year. But, with a Federal judge involved, bidness won’t be so easy to do since the Feds have, let us say, different standards for doin’ bidness. Here’s a flash for Georgia’s citizens. The United States government cannot, and is not going to successfully deport 12 million illegal immigrants. It has gone on way, way too long to change, and it is just not going to happen. Not only would it hurt them, it would hurt this nation. The focus now needs to be on a program that creates guest worker privileges and more importantly, pathways to citizenship that weed out the criminal element and reward hard working, tax and social security paying illegals trying to create a better life here for their families. Myopic good ol’ boys who can’t see one inch in front of their own faces, focused on their own pocket books and the interests of those who keep them in office and maintain their lifestyles, are not going to anything but try to scare the illegals into other states, while stupidly gutting a major Georgia econonic engine – agriculture. In short, they are short sighted and not up to the task of this kind of long term sensible thinking. Today, the farmers are suffering, but that kind of thing can spread quickly. Geprgia state tjat once had such huge promise, but falling behind other New South staes and now in decline. The airlines are on their collective asses. Hartsfield alone cannot save us. One thing we know, the suspreme court might shoot-down every state law pertaining to immigration and all people who are here in these United States illegally. A federal law must be inactive if immigration laws has to have any federal oversight. It must not just sit on the backburner as it has been for years without being addressed at the federal level and not acted upon. If anyone, no matter race, nationality, you must file for immigration status in the country where you were born; you must not imposed upon U.S. soil unless you went through the process and have been become a naturalized citizen. One day, you will get caught and have to go back and start the process over and it takes years………but those who have done it are now citizens. Bottom Line!

Where is the outrage in this? If this was Bush, what would the media be saying?
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2011/06/27/dinner_with_obama_now_includes_joe_biden.html

NRO’s Jim Geraghty raises the question of whether Barack Obama filmed a video for his reelection campaign in the White House, which may possibly be a violation of federal election laws.

In the video, President Obama promotes a “Dinner With Barack” raffle. To participate in the contest you need to donate at least $5 to the president’s re-election campaign and your name will be raffled off to enjoy a dinner with the President, airfare and accommodations included. In a new web video, Obama announced Vice President Joe Biden will also be attending the dinner.

There is one problem, however. This campaign ad was most likely recorded in the White House, which may have violated FEC campaign finance laws.

Take a look at this weekly address delivered by Obama in February. Below is a screenshot taken from the weekly address followed by an image taken from the campaign advertisement.

Obama Weekly Address with lamp

Obama campaign advertisement lamp

Both videos have identical lamps in the background, suggesting both videos were recorded at the same location. President Obama normally records his weekly address at the White House unless he is on the road like last week when he was in Pittsburgh.

Below are several other instances where this room was used for a weekly address:

NO….Real Clear Politics makes a suggestion….Read what you posted.

Also from Real Clear Politics:

“In response to questions about whether the president and his political team had stayed safely on the legal side of the relevant statutes, White House officials made three arguments. First, they said, an open process for small donors to essentially win a raffle is not the kind of fundraising prohibited under the law — and the president didn’t make a direct appeal for donations, anyway. Second, they pointed to a longstanding advisory opinion from the Justice Department that differentiates between the residence portion of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. — where the aide said Obama had been filmed — and official rooms in the White House. Third, they said, Obama’s approach is in keeping with the practices of his predecessors.”

(emphasis added mine)

I think it’s typical GOP unreasonableness that would not allow the President freedom in his own home.

But directly raising money in the White House was indeed the context of the bitter controversy President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore provoked in 1995 and 1996 by aggressively raising millions of dollars in campaign funds during activities expressly designed to use the White House as a hook to attract donor interest.”

“You don’t agree with me, you must be liberal” is a tired and useless defense. It serves about as much purpose as talking about “57 states” and “teleprompter.” That is, none at all, except to self-inflate your own ego. It does nothing to convince independent thinkers.

Critical thinkers will be your downfall. You know this. Perhaps this is why education has been targeted over and over again for revisionist history and falsified information, such as “evolution is just a theory.”

They made up stories(Dan Rather anybody?) They called him names. They criticized his every move. And for you to say otherwise just shows how incompetent and out of touch you really are. We have not seen ANY of this with Obama. He is still the media’s darling and unfortunately I do not see that changing regardless of how bad the situation in this country gets. Double dip recession…..the media will just say that it was the Reps fault and they didn’t give him a chance. Gas prices over $4…….of that isn’t obama’s fault, that is just the way it goes. Sorry….Bush was not afforded the same excusals that obama is getting right now.

He identifies more with liberals than anybody else. His viewership definitely consists of people that would vote along the Dem lines than Rep. You have to admit that. Many of these fools actually take what he says as being the truth. I cannot remember where it was posted or when it was because it was awhile ago, but there was a poll out there that showed a decent percentage of people went to his show for latest in current events. I think the number even trumped the number of people who went to the evening news. It is sad. I know that Stewart, like Colbert, Hannity, OReilly, Limbaugh, Beck, Maddow, Mathews, Doperman, etc. only do this stuff for pure entertainment value, but it is sad that so many people out there actually take every word these clowns say at face-value without performing an analysis themselves. Poor Adam. I told you to layoff the hard stuff. The “Dream Act” is a Democrat vote scheme. Nothing more. Democrats don’t give a darn about minorities. Never have. They just want their votes. People that have jobs are Republicans. The Democrats need people that don’t have jobs. In a press release, Annenberg senior analyst Dannagal Goldthwaite Young said: “Daily Show viewers have higher campaign knowledge than national news viewers and newspaper readers — even when education, party identification, following politics, watching cable news, receiving campaign information online, age, and gender are taken into consideration.”

Scott — “Many of these fools actually take what he says as being the truth.”

Stewart would be the first to tell you — as he has reminded many interviewers — that he does not host a news show. He hosts a comedy show. He once had to point out to an interviewer that his “lead-in is puppets making crank phone calls.”

He does, however, offer biting and incisive comedic commentary on the news of the day, and if you can’t see how that would draw viewers, then I can’t help you. He’s been criticized by ‘legitimate’ newsmen for his presentation and how many viewers he draws for it, at which point he usually reminds them that if they’d just do their effing JOBS, then maybe he wouldn’t get so many people coming to him for what he’s selling.

Stewart doesn’t present himself as a legitimate newsman. He’s the TV news version of Mad or Cracked Magazine. But given how most ‘legitimate’ mass market news has been watered down and co-opted by its corporate owners into easily-digestible mush, there’s clearly a market for someone like Stewart.

You can enjoy a healthy salad AND enjoy a greasy, juicy burger. And you can watch mass marketed news AND Jon Stewart. Don’t presume that the two are mutually exclusive.

“The apparent legislative intent is to create such a climate of hostility, fear, mistrust and insecurity that all illegal aliens will leave Georgia.”

Perhaps for good reason. Pat Buchanan notes in his “Say Goodbye to Los Angeles” column, where the U.S. and Mexico played a soccer match before 93,000 fans, the game was essentially a home game for Mexico.

According to Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times, when the U.S. team took the field it was “smothered in boos. … Its goalkeeper was bathed in a chanted obscenity. Even its national anthem was filled with the blowing of air horns and bouncing of beach balls.”

How did U.S. coach Bob Bradley respond to the reception his team received in America’s largest county? “Obviously … the support that Mexico has on a night like this makes it a home game for them.”

“A home game” for Mexico — in Pasadena?

“It’s part of something we had to deal with,” said the coach.

“I have never heard more consistent loud cheering for one team here,” wrote Plaschke, “from the air horns to the ‘Ole’ chant with each Mexico pass, all set to the soundtrack of low throbbing that began in the parking lot six hours before the game and continued long into the night.”

After the 4-2 win by Mexico, for the first time, the trophy award ceremony was held in the Rose Bowl. When the losing U.S. team was introduced, the stadium rocked again with boos.

“We’re not booing the country. We’re booing the team,” one rooter for Mexico told Plaschke. “There’s a big difference.”

But why would scores of thousands boo a defeated team after a game?

Why would spectators raise a ruckus during a national anthem, except to manifest contempt for the country whose anthem it was?

U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard credited several Mexican players with the win, but he was disgusted at how the officials conducted the ceremony awarding the Gold Cup title to Mexico.

They “should be ashamed of themselves,” said Howard. “It was a disgrace that the entire post-match ceremony was in Spanish. You can bet your (expletive) that if we were in Mexico City, it wouldn’t be all in English.”

Indeed, were U.S. fans in a Mexican town to boo, jeer and chant obscenities at a Mexican team before, during and after a match, and blow horns during the Mexican national anthem, they would be lucky to get out of the stadium alive.

What does this event, in which Plaschke estimates 80,000 fans in the Rose Bowl could not control their contempt for the U.S. team and for the U.S. national anthem, tell us?

We have within our country 12-20 million illegal aliens, with Mexico the primary source, and millions of others who may be U.S. citizens but are not truly Americans. As one fan told Plaschke, “I was born in Mexico, and that is where my heart will always be.”

Perhaps he should go back there, and let someone take his place who wants to become an American.

By 2050, according to Census figures, thanks to illegals crossing over and legalized mass immigration, the number of Hispanics in the U.S.A. will rise from today’s 50 million to 135 million.

Say goodbye to Los Angeles. Say goodbye to California.

Perhaps “a climate of hostility, fear, mistrust and insecurity” is necessary to keep us from going the way of LA and CA. If so, then let it be.

Scott — “First, misstatement and political inaccuracy?? Really? Just because you don’t agree with their slant doesn’t mean they have a “penchant” for it.”

Fox’s broadcasts frequently misstate points of fact and fail to issue corrections; this has been corroborated by numerous former Fox staffers. And I happen to know a former Fox on-camera reporter, so I’ve heard about it first-hand.

“If it wasn’t for Fox, would we have heard about ACORN’s terrible practices?”

Many of the allegations about ACORN turned out to be baseless. Did Fox ever issue a retraction or correction on those items?

“Would we have heard anything Rev Wright and his connection to Obama? Domestic terrorist Bill Ayers’ connection to Obama? Van Jones and his radical radical policies? Those are all legitimate stories that should have been followed up by the “real” media.”

The fact that Fox broke those stories does not mean that they *wouldn’t* have been broken if Fox didn’t exist. Bear in mind that the National Enquirer — hardly a bastion of professional journalism — broke the Monica Lewinsky story. If there’s stinky dirt on a President or presidential candidate, I dare say someone will find it and run with it. This is why a free press is so important.

“Of course, I am sure that you say that they are meaningless but I think they are a direct reflection of Obama’s character and probably should have been followed up on before a Presidential election.”

Given that, how would you feel if a major news operation had dirt on a presidential candidate and *spiked* the story right before an election? Would you feel differently if it were Fox doing the spiking?

“Given your last statement, are you saying that Stewart should also be suspended for his racially tinted comments? I would say he went over the top, don’t you?”

Once again, Jon Stewart is a *comedian,* not a newsman I pointed this out to you already. He no more deserves suspension for his comments than Redd Foxx would deserve (if he were still alive) for his.

“Fox’s broadcasts frequently misstate points of fact and fail to issue corrections; this has been corroborated by numerous former Fox staffers. And I happen to know a former Fox on-camera reporter, so I’ve heard about it first-hand.”

The MSM does the same thing. they are just a little more sneaky about it. how many times are they going to say the unemployment numbers “unexpectedly” rose? Isn’t that a misstatement? Do we ever see anything from the MSM on it? Did we see a correction or an apllogy from the MSM for getting on Palin for allegedly telling the Paul Rever story wrong when in fact she was 100% correct/ Nope. Only a statement by one guy saying that she mistakenly got it correct. I am sure you will disagree. After all, you have an inside guy who knows all about it. yeah sure you do.

“Many of the allegations about ACORN turned out to be baseless. Did Fox ever issue a retraction or correction on those items?”
They were so baseless that funding was pulled by Congress and the Supreme Court said they won’t even listen to their case. Definitely sounds baseless to me. Next

“The fact that Fox broke those stories does not mean that they *wouldn’t* have been broken if Fox didn’t exist.” Fox was talking about these stories months before the networks even touched the issues. If the networks really wanted to perform some due diligence on Obama, the candidate, they would have attacked these issues the same time Fox was breaking them. Next

“Given that, how would you feel if a major news operation had dirt on a presidential candidate and *spiked* the story right before an election? Would you feel differently if it were Fox doing the spiking?” Not really sure what you are talking about but hell, CBS tried to do it by FABRICATING a story about Bush. You do remember Dan Rather, don’t you? Speaking of retraction and apology, did CBS ever really issue one on that. I am not sure. Maybe they did. I don’t remember it. NEXT

“Once again, Jon Stewart is a *comedian,* not a newsman I pointed this out to you already. He no more deserves suspension for his comments than Redd Foxx would deserve (if he were still alive) for his.”
Stewart is an entertainer!!! So is Hannity and so is Rush Limbaugh. We know that the media constantly goes after him for being racist every time he criticizes the president. You asked if Fox ever suspended any of its anchors for going over the top. They are entertainers in the same fashion that Stewart is. That is why I asked the question. Adam, I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree. My perception was that they did not like him after the 2000 election. Then, 9-11 hit and they saw a president that people liked so they decided that they should support him. They maintained that support for a couple years and as the wars became unpopular, the media left him. Even when he was receiving support for them, they still would take every opportunity to crack jokes about him. In my opinion, Obama rarely gets the negative attention Bush received. Whether it is fear or they are just in bed with him, I think it is fair to say that the media support Obama far more than they ever supported Bush.

Scott — “I think it is fair to say that the media support Obama far more than they ever supported Bush.”

Judith Miller, a reporter for the New York Times wrote a number of stories that saw print and were supportive of the Bush Administration’s case for war. Miller would cite unnamed sources and unnamed Bush Administration officials in her stories, and the Bush Administration would cite Miller’s work as ‘evidence’ that supported their case for war.

As it later turned out, Miller based most of her stories on hearsay and unsupported second-hand claims, and most of her stories turned out to be false. And of course, she later went to work for Fox News and Newsmax.

Can you identify a reporter today who carries as much water for the Obama Administration as Judith Miller carried for the Bush Administration?

Scott: Obama rarely gets the negative attention Bush received.

The major news media was all over the health care debate, constantly having people on who would bash it with talking points. In fact, other than possibly MSNBC, ever major network did this. The focus was on the individual mandate and it was decidedly negative.

Fast forward to the oil spill. Major new networks got on Obama’s case for that too.

Major Sunday morning shows hosted SEVEN of the former Bush administration’s officials to tell the whole world about how Bush is the real hero for us getting bin Laden. Oh, and they said, btw, that it was waterboarding that worked. Both are false, in case you didn’t know.

Tell me again that there hasn’t been SIGNIFICANT negative criticism brought against Obama on the major news media. Bush was attacked for his handling of a natural disaster, and the nearest equivalent that isn’t an equivalent was the oil spill. The media blasted both. Bush got attacked for the Iraq war only AFTER we had been in there and it was discovered there were no WMDs. Before that, it was full speed ahead and talk of how this would be done in a week.

And, btw, if you want a constant barrage against Obama and his admin, just watch Fox. If you think, compared to that, that Obama isn’t being criticized enough, then I think you view is way too skewed.

Joe mama, I am assuming that the entire cast at MSNBC is out, including Chris “Tingling Sensation” Mathews, correct? So…….let’s look at Bob Schiefer of CBS. He accused Donald Trump, another person who is basically an entertainer, of being racist for even questioning Obama’s academic credentials. Once again, the liberal media calling somebody who isn’t one of them racist for asking/saying anything critical about Obama, yet they are not holding their own accountable for actually saying racist things about Kaine.

Aside from that situation though, look at how he went after Bachman this weekend and contrast that with any interviews he has had with obama. He goes after Reps hard and pretty much leaves Obama alone, throwing softball after softball to him.

Do I know of reporters like Judith Miller offhand? Nope. Am I going to check? Nope? Do I need to? Nope. Why would he need to have a Judith Miller when people like Bob Schieffer handle him with kids gloves and then go after other Reps with knives. Want another example? Contrast his interview with Obama versus Boehner. He trashed Boehner for his smoking habit and merely thanks Obama for not smoking.

Need another example of how the media treats Obama with kids gloves? How much press was given to his major major screwup on the Medal of Honor? If that was Bush, do you honestly think they would have covered it so minimally? Notice I said HONESTLY!!! Did the networks even cover it?

Scott, I find your responses evasive and combative. I have politely asked you several questions that you have failed to respond to, and you have instead replied with more and more intemperate posts.

I would be pleased to engage in a polite and collegial discussion with you, but it increasingly appears to me that you’re quite emotionally invested in this topic and quite possibly unable to talk about it in a dispassionate manner. Given that, I’m going to engage in more productive discussion on another thread. Perhaps we shall meet again in the future on a thread containing a topic that is more conducive to a polite, adult conversation between us.

But, but Judge, there should not be any illegal immigrants in Georgia in the first place, it is in fact a failure of immigration enforcement by the Federal Government that there are.
The whole point of the 1986 immigration law was to stop illegal immigration. In fact we were promised there would never be another amnesty because there would be no need for one, the enforcement would prevent it. The Federal government failed over and over again to enforce the law though, contrary to what the court decision states.

“The major news media was all over the health care debate, constantly having people on who would bash it with talking points. In fact, other than possibly MSNBC, ever major network did this. The focus was on the individual mandate and it was decidedly negative.”

They were? The same one like ABC which was broadcast from inside the white house when the bill was starting to go through Congress. Really? I must have also missed the many times the major networks brought up how this bill was being openly negotiated in front of the American public. you know….the whole in front cspan thing. I also noticed how they were so infuriated that the votes on this thing came under scrutiny. You know….the cornhusker kickback, the la purchase, or even how it was voted in the middle of the night. yeah….all of the major networks were just constantly badgering obama on those things.

“Fast forward to the oil spill. Major new networks got on Obama’s case for that too.”
yes, he received some coverage for his inability to react quickly. As well he should. You know what he turned around and did…..blamed Bush and did the MSM question him on it. Not really. Sorry you are not winning that one Adam.

I answered your questions using legit examples and now your only response is to say that I have not addressed your questions. So there go….run run run. It is what you libs do best. And the sad part is that we will probably end up on another thread sometime and you will want to rehash the whole thing as if this conversation never even existed. it is eerily similar to how liberal politicians want everybody to forget the damage they have inflicted on this economy. Instead of taking accountability, they are just going to look for a way to blame it on Republicans….probably on GW again.

When the head of ICE said last May that he will not be processing illegal immigrants that are caught in this country in some cases, what else are we supposed to perceive?

From Chicago Tribune
“Morton said his agency will not necessarily process illegal immigrants referred to them by Arizona officials. The best way to reduce illegal immigration is through a comprehensive federal approach, not a patchwork of state laws, he said.”

Adam

Scott: From the judge’s ruling:

In 2010, immigration offenses were prosecuted in federal court more than any other offense. Of the 83,946 cases prosecuted under the federal sentencing guidelines, 28,504, or 34% involved immigration offenses. In 2010, of 81,304 criminal cases prosecuted in federal court, 38,619 (47.5%) were non-United States citizens.

Also, your quote is consistent from the policy position of the US in general, which is that immigration of OUR COUNTRY is not a state issue. The states don’t get to decide their state is going to “citizen arrest” immigrants.

Scott

Adam, What is your point? When the head of ICE says that he is not going to have his guys enforce law, that is no longer a perception but rather a reality.

You can throw every numbers out there but it does not take away from the fact that the head of immigration said he was not going to have his agents enforce the law in some cases. To me, that is wrong and the guy should be fired. I guess to you it is perfectly acceptable because the statistics say the courts are prosecuting more than any other offense and this admin is doing a great job. I use that stat as proof that more needs to be done to stop them from coming into the country and more needs to be done to kick them out. Of course, you will go ahead and make light of the situation, probably joke about it like Obama did with his “moat” statement, even going so far as to lie about finishing a fence across the border when in fact nothing is even close to being finished.

There is only one way to answer this debate…..stop the bleeding, kick the illegals out, and enforce our laws.

No, Scott. You did not answer *several* questions I politely asked you. Instead, you posited several inapplicable counterexamples in increasingly shrill language.

“I answered your questions using legit examples”

No, you did not.

“and now your only response is to say that I have not addressed your questions.”

No, I could respond in many other ways; I simply choose not to.

“So there go….run run run.”

I’m not running anywhere, Scott. I simply don’t care to continue this particular conversation with you. As I said above, perhaps we will meet again on another thread and have a more productive conversation than this one.

“It is what you libs do best.”

And here’s a good example of why there’s no reason for me to go on talking with you on this topic.

“I worked for many years with refugees and I can tell you one of the groups most ardently opposed to illegal entry are those who waited and came legally.”

This is absolutely true. Last year, a friend of mine in Africa won the immigration lottery after applying *every year* for twelve years. Twelve years!

This is someone who could have come on “vacation” to the United States while pregnant and then had her baby in the States to make a little instant U.S. citizen, but she wanted to follow the law and do things the right way.

So someone who’s law-abiding and wants to participate honorably in American society has to wait twelve years to come to the U.S., but instead of feeling admiration for her I am supposed to have all sorts of sympathy for the people who cut in line to come here instead.

Seems kind of harsh.

I wish folks would stop evading the REAL issue. The REAL issue is that white people see that our country is changing where no longer will they be the majority population. These “illegal alien” laws being passed in Georgia, Arizona, Alabama, etc. are in response to fear and hatred. If many were truely honest, they would admit that they want to put a stop to the population trends by any means necessary including getting rid of “illegal” and legal persons of Hispanic/Latino origin and other people of color. If there was a dramatic increase in the number of people in our county from any European country, there would be no public outcry, no laws established to allow the police to harrass them, and no legislation that further hurts our already weak economy. I would have more respect for those of you that support the “illegal alien’ laws, if you were honest and admitted what your true motivation is – xenophobic hatefulness.

Scott: Put your money where your mouth is then. If you want better enforcement, pay more to the Treasury so they have the money to hire more enforcement agents, even though they are enforcing more than they did under Bush.

Think of it too, like this: If Arizona passes a law so they can kick most illegals out of THEIR state, but then have immigration enforcement dot he rest, that unfairly burdens the immigration enforcers with having more Arizona immigrants to process than in other states. If it were possible to do that without sacrificing enforcement elsewhere, then that would be fine. But it isn’t, and I think it IS fine when someone says they aren’t going to sacrifice the NATIONAL enforcement efforts to cater to the whims of ONE STATE.

“The apparent legislative intent is to create such a climate of hostility, fear, mistrust and insecurity that all illegal aliens will leave Georgia”

Uh yeah, that’s the whole point and there’s nothing wrong with that!

The law is not intended to create a climate of fear. A climate of fear is what happens when there are large numbers of people in your state residing there illegally. The fear is nobody’s fault but their own for assuming they could break the law and that there wouldn’t be consequences.

Since when did we decide not to enforce laws because the criminals would be afraid? They should be afraid. And the should get the heck out of Georgia and go somewhere that wants them, like CA.

Let’s rephrase what the judge said: ‘

Have our federal judges been replaced by Martians? Who are these people? Do they even reference the law in their decisions anymore or is it all about their “feelings” now? This is Obama BS.

A judge that is advocating emotional and law breaking over enforcing the law? No wonder the U.S. citizen can no longer get justice in his or her own country. This judge should be removed from office, as he can’t seem to protect the U.S. constitution, the U.S. citizen, or the law.

Adam, you have no idea what you are talking about. The number of illegals crossing the AZ border makes it the biggest area of illegal crossings in the nation. More enforcement HAS to be done there and that means more DHS and Border patrol in that ONE state.

This is the reason why progressives, like you, never become officers in our military, you have no idea how to solve a problem, or even where the problem is located. You are only worried about the equal division of the resources amongst all the states, in other words known as COMMUNISM.
