In a new Gallup poll, 22 percent of Americans say they would not vote for a “generally well-qualified person for president who happened to be Mormon.”
That’s the same number since Gallup began asking the question back in 1967, when George Romney, father of Mitt, was running for president. However, as Gallup notes, 25 percent of Americans in 1959 said they wouldn’t vote for a Catholic, and one year later John Kennedy was elected president.
A few other tidbits:
– Democrats (27 percent) were more likely than Republicans (18 percent) to reject a Mormon candidate.
– Two-thirds of Americans said they would support a well-qualified presidential candidate who happened to be gay, compared to only 26 percent in 1978.
– Eighty-nine percent said they would support a Jewish candidate. Again, it’s interesting to track that historically. Before World War II and the terrors of the Holocaust (1937), only 46 percent would support a Jew for president. By 1958, it had risen to 62 percent, and by the ’60s it reached 80 percent.
– Fewer than half — 49 percent — would support an otherwise well-qualified candidate who happened to be atheist. But that too has changed. In 1958, the first year it was asked, just 18 percent would have supported an atheist.
– Ninety-four percent say they would back a black candidate. That number didn’t top 50 percent until the mid-Sixties, jumping nine points — 48 percent to 59 percent — between 1963 and 1965, testament to the mind-changing power of the civil rights movement. It jumped another 14 points — 79 percent to 93 percent — between 1987 and 1997. It’s pure speculation, but that’s also the rough time frame in which Bill Cosby dominated the TV ratings as Dr. Cliff Huxtable.
– Today, 93 percent would vote for a woman, but in 1969 only 53 percent of Americans were willing to say that. The crucial jump in support for female candidates occurred as the women’s lib movement took off. By 1971, that number had hit 66 percent, a 13-point increase in just two years.
You hear a lot of people talk about how much America has changed, and they seldom imply it’s for the better. But in many ways the changes of the last 50 years have made this a much better, stronger and united nation.

Good Little Liberal,
The counrty is not in shambles, captain hyperbole. To be fair, the country is experiencing a tough time. You realize that Obama inherited this mess from Bush whose administration’s needless Iraq war (based on lies) in conjuction with de-regulation of financial institutions helped cause this mess. Is was on Bush’s watch that the country started down this road. And, it’s worth noting that most economists say the country is slowly but surely recovering.
Blaming Obama for our current situation is liking blaming a firefighter for starting the fire.

I’ve seen that, and I vehemently disagree with that train of thought. Anybody with common friggin’ sense knows that profits are not prepetual. Anyone who believes that is a complete idiot. Companies will have to take losses at some point and time. Why not absorb the losses when things are the lowest and ride prosperity all the way back up? I fail to see how socialism and/or pushing socialism would have anything to do with it. I guess that comes from the simplistic thought processes of some of the simple people here.

I always find it funny that people complain so bitterly about Obama’s supposed lack of experience for the Presidency.
Lincoln served four terms in the Illinois House of Representatives and a single term in the U.S. House (and while he was there he voted a solid Whig record, almost always following the party line). No time as a governor or US Senator.
Nearly 20 presidents served less than 10 years as a governor, US Rep, US Senator, or state legislator.
This hardly makes him the “least qualified president ever!!!!”
And I’ve often noticed the same people who bemoaned Obama’s lack of experience rail against the evils of career politicians.

Atheists do not let religious ideology run their lives. This should be a plus. Instead, it is seen as a lack of morals.
It’s ironic. The same morals many Christians claim to have are immediately dismissed in favor of money or power (greed). Atheists seem to stick more to what they believe in other areas, such as helping out their fellow man. They just don’t need a god or a pastor to tell them to do it. If the pastors would preach help for ALL the poor, universal health care is good, and stop being greedy all the time, then maybe things would be different. If we truly are a Christian Nation, then Christians should have no problem having their taxes used for health care and helping the poor. Instead they want it used for war and subsidizing corporations.
This is what I see and is all opinion. Not everyone goes along those lines, but the most vocal of “Christians” DO follow this, and even rail against those who call them out on it, following a libertarian wet dream ideology that is decidedly NOT Christian, but nevertheless a mantra and full of mindless obedience.

Just returning to expalin my earlier comment about atheists not allowed to hold public office. Some state laws did state this. Atheists were even banned as unreliable witnesses. However,
quoting an article that pretty much killed those laws.
.
“The U.S. Supreme Court ruled all such state provisions unconstitutional and unenforceable in a 1961 ruling in a Maryland case: “We repeat and again reaffirm that neither a State nor the Federal Government can constitutionally force a person ‘to profess a belief or disbelief in any religion.’”
The article went on to comment that pretty much the only thing keeping a qualified atheist from being elected was the wa-hoos voting.

I don’t think Bosch was trying to “score points” with anyone. I’ve seen Bosch apply that same principle that he believes to everybody here who have tried to compare Iraq and Libya. His rationale has been the same every time, so I can respect him for standing on his principles. On the other hand, you and others who have made that comparison are intitled to your opinions as well, and I respect that too.
Personally, I would not compare Iraq to Libya as we do not have military personnel there actively engaging anyone on the ground. If we get 1000,000 troops on the ground there, then we can compare the two. As someone referenced the CIA being there earlier, that does not equate to “boots on the ground” in my book. If we refer to CIA presence as boots on the ground, then we have boots on damn near every sovereign ground in the world.

Well, I’m pretty open-minded. I don’t care about a canadate’s personal stuff, long as he’s White, male, Southren Baptist or Holiness, straight as a arrow, against abortion, against buying booze on Sunday, and don’t cotton to Those People or the Jews. And of course he needs to be a Conservative Republican that’s for cutting taxes and getting rid of all this welfare spending on the old coots, welfare queens, and Those People.
Other than that, I look at the guy with a open mind.
Have a good Tuesday everybody.

GLL: Palin. Walmart greeter? hy do you hate the past governor of Alaska. Is there any other reason that it’s just the cool thing to do?
I was going to put down her job as a Quik Trip slurpy dispenser, but I think she quit that job after one day, so it doesn’t count.
You libs are lemmings. Try to produce an original thought.
Well maybe I’ll do like Palin and write down all my “original” thoughts on my palm……in case I forget them……
Dave R: DebbieDoRight, you’ll be waiting a looooooong time
We’ll see. Hope springs eternal.
Contractor: There is no doubt that white people and Latinos are underrepresented in football and basketball, so how does this not apply?
How many whites and latinos have gone out for professional sports and been turned down because of their race? If the answer is “a bunch” then maybe they have a class action suit in the making. I know a good lawyer.
So by your account, affirmative action only has to be reviewed by the deans of schools and owners of a business?
When did I say that? You’re not trying to put words in my mouth are you?
Try thinking a little deeper so you don’t sound like you have a few bolts loose in that head of yours.
Try following your own advice. You were the ones who mentioned blacks in sports to correlate your arguments against Affirmative Action, not me. Duh!
Keep – Snowbillie Snooki it is!!
