In an appearance today at the Heritage Foundation, U.S. Rep. Allen West, a conservative Republican freshman from Florida and a former Army officer, was asked about the impact of “social experimentation” on our military, an apparent reference to the abolition of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.
West responded (see the 30-minute mark in the video below):
“Let me put it very simple, the United States’ military exists to win the nation’s wars. When you join the military, it takes individual behavior and conforms it the military. Now, if we start to have a perspective and belief in this nation that the military conforms to individual behavior, then we have lost the understanding of what it means to be in the United States military. The rules are very clear in the United States military. If you don’t want to abide by the rules of the United States military, then don’t join.
But the U.S. military is not there as a social experiment and for those who will sit up there and say, Congressman, you should understand because you’re black. Unless I’m Michael Jackson, I can’t change my color. But people can change behavior. And you do not base being a part of the military on adjusting to individual behavior. That’s my concern. And when you look at what our young men and women have to contend with, we’re talking about men and women fifth and sixth tours in combat zones. Now is not the time to appease a very small special interest group and I’ll leave it at that.”
I concur wholeheartedly with the congressman’s statement. If you don’t want to abide by the rules of the U.S. military, don’t join. The military should not conform to an individual’s behavior; the individual conforms to the military, and now is not the time to appease a very small special interest group. I agree with all of that.
So, if you are one of that ever-shrinking minority who believe that gay Americans don’t have a right to full participation as citizens, including the right to help defend this country, don’t join the United States military. If you do join the United States military, you better be ready to change your behavior to conform to military rules, which now outlaw discrimination against gay Americans.
Amen, Brother West.

By the way …….. since we are on this subject:
“Arizona is losing to the proposed boycott.”
“Illegal immigrants are boycotting Arizona by the thousands, showing their outrage with Arizona ’s controversial new SB-1070 law by moving elsewhere.
In the small town of Guadalupe , AZ, south of Phoenix , Manuel Renaldo is one of those who is punishing Arizona by leaving. As he loaded his stolen car with his stolen belongings and family of ten, Renaldo told this reporter through an interpreter “It’s a matter of principle; I refuse to be supported by a state that treats me like a criminal!”
The effects of the exodus are being felt by Arizona retailers, who are reporting dwindling sales of beer, low grade wine such as Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill, etc., spray paint, and ammunition. Also hit hard are the state’s hospitals, which have reported a dramatic decline in births and emergency room visits. Tattoo parlors are in a state of panic.
Renaldo told a reporter through an interpreter “He and his family are moving to California , which is a state that will support him and his family with dignity!”

My partner is a former Marine (he says there is no such thing as a former Marine. Once a Marine always a Marine). His service was pre-DADT as we are in our mid-fifties. For many years I was his “best friend and roommate.” We never went out to dinner together unless we took two female friends with us (usually lesbians which made it even more strange). You do what you have to do given your time and place in this world.
I look forward to seeing other men and women like him able to serve openly.

a good linkee next time someone sez that CNN is a “librul” news network:
http://mediamatters.org/blog/201105310021
Proving once again that there’s no standard by which many mainstream media outlets are willing to hold sloppy propagandist Andrew Breitbart, CNN this afternoon invited the discredited blogger on the air to discuss the Rep. Anthony Weiner (NY- D) Twitter story.
Conveniently setting aside the fact that virtually every attack campaign that Breitbart has launched in recent years has collapsed under the weight of modest scrutiny, CNN presented the fatuous blogger as some sort of expert who could walk people through the Weiner story, which he’s been hyping for days. (The whole right-wing blogosphere launched itself into a creepy tizzy over the holiday weekend regarding the story.)
The invite was odd because last summer CNN’s Anderson Cooper helped debunk Breitbart’s shoddy Shirley Sherrod attack and announced the clips of Sherrod that Breitbart posted online “were clearly edited to deceive and slander Miss Sherrod.” Cooper added that Breitbart’s behavior was “a classic example of what is wrong with our national discourse.”

In fact, a study by the University of Maryland reveals, ignorance of Fox viewers actually increases the longer they watch the network. That’s because Ailes isn’t interested in providing people with information, or even a balanced range of perspectives. Like his political mentor, Richard Nixon, Ailes traffics in the emotions of victimization.
“What Nixon did – and what Ailes does today in the age of Obama – is unravel and rewire one of the most powerful of human emotions: shame,” says Perlstein, the author of Nixonland. “He takes the shame of people who feel that they are being looked down on, and he mobilizes it for political purposes. Roger Ailes is a direct link between the Nixonian politics of resentment and Sarah Palin’s politics of resentment. He’s the golden thread.”

The AJC reports that housing prices are at 1999 levels, the lowest since Bozo’s stimulus was supposed to provide us with a boost. Unemployment still at about 10% reported (more like 15+%), debt at an all time high, consumer confidence in the tank, record foreclosures at an all time high and new home construction at a new low, banks, despite being serviced by the govt are not lending money, debt ceiling bill passes Congress, this country is essentially broke….. and liberals think that Bozo is doing a great job. What a disaster…. and liberals, despite being in denial, view this as progressive. God help this great country.

Most people that have served are aware that there have always been gay individuals in the Armed Forces. I am heterosexual and served side by side with them everyday. It is true that we have an all volunteer military and a lot of the service personnel will not disclose their sexual orientation. This issue is so old and worn out. There will ALWAYS be gays in the military and they more then likely will continue to stay in the closet. Look around the civilian work environments and compare them. The main differences are the uniforms and strict military laws.

Well, I see it’s the same old stuff here.
I read where they might of found that cell phone use causes cancer. I sure hope so. I’m sick of people on cell phones that don’t know they’re in this world and drive like maniacs. I’m sick of seeing people walking thru stores and talking on cell phones. I’m disgusted with people that go into Ryans and talk on their cell phone so loud you can’t even eat in peace.
I figure about a four-foot long cancer growing out of their ear would cut way down on their cell phone use. Not that I wish anybody harm or anything. That wouldn’t be Christian.
Have a good night everybody.

My “problem” with gays serving in the military? The whiny assed ones looking for a payday and a chance to be “victimized.”
I was combat arms. We are a crude bunch. We use ribald humor. I avoided females soldiers in a “professional” manner as much as I possibly could since I didn’t want to be answering “sexual discrimination” charges for some stupid crap. This was confirmed for me when I was in PLDC (Primary Leadership Development Course, a mandatory school to become a Sergeant). There was this one useless bimbo, we were put on maneuvers and when the instructor came up to her, her web belt was twisted all sideways and stuff. He grabbed her ammo pouches like he would anyone man and jerked them to the forward facing position where they should have been and said, “Square yourself and equipment away.” After he left she was all, “He had NO RIGHT to TOUCH ME.” (He didn’t touch the silly twit, he adjusted her equipment), THAT’S sexual abuse, that’s sexual harassment. What do YOU think.” I told her I would prefer she never talk to me again and I DAMN SURE would stay as far away from her as possible.
In the infantry we also used “gay humor.” It’s inevitable when you are in as close proximity to each other as you have to be. If you are in Germany sleeping on the ground, have one blanket between tow men and it’s 10 degrees and snowing, you can BET you’ll be cuddled up like newly weds. “You get a stiffy and we’re gonna have problems.” “Don’t worry, I’ll do it and make you like it.” Stuff like that.
Of course I’m limited by the auto snagger to use good examples but perhaps you get the picture. There’s no “accusations” or “harassment” it’s just “macho man” talk all in given and received in a jocular manner.
Oh no, but what if someone IS gay and they decide to be “offended?” Someone gets mad at their Sergeant? All of a sudden, he’s a “gay basher.”
I’m not saying it could happen, I’m saying it WILL happen.

Nothing against gay people except that I don’t condone their life style based on religious beliefs but this is all a bunch of crap about homosexuals in the military. The fact is that the homosexual community numbers well below 10% of this countries population. Gays in the military are a comparatively small number and too much is being made of it. I think those that are homosexual who serve based on a calling to defend America should be protected from discrimination and persecution. Those who think the elimination of DADT provides a license for political activism should be disengaged from serving in any branch of our military. I served in the U.S.M.C. Infantry and Recon and never ran into a trooper who even appeared remotely as homosexual.

Off topic here: but it appears that had the private company responsible for the stricken Japanese nuclear plant been allowed to have its way in the aftermath of the accident, that is if it had been allowed to ignore the pleas of the government to apply seawater to the melted cores, we might well have seen a catastrophe that would have dwarfed Chernobyl. All of Northern Japan might well have been lost. What saved us from that catastrophe? The government’s quick action to dump the seawater on the melted cores, which it turns out may have made just the critical difference.
Food for thought for those who doubt the fundamental perversity of the private sector when push comes to shove at a time of grave crisis.

I was embarrassed for this fool at his press conference- going on and on about people with pies in the back of the crowd, etc. And getting all defensive at the reporter asking a simple yes/no question. Watching this vermin squeam about a simple question was priceless. Witnessing this idiot’s press conference you can’t help but realize just how F ed up we are that we keep electing jackasses like this that can’t answer a straightforward yes/no question. Its pathetic. And I’m not picking on him cause he’s a Dem but because he’s part of the problem which is Congress period.

Come to think of it wasn’t that married Republican that had to resign because of the craigslist personal ad also from NY? Must be something in the water up there in NY that produces arrogant bastards of both stripes. At least this fool had enough decency to step down. Would Weiner? Never in a million years.

Below is the Wickapedia link for the Colnel West incident. I suggest this for anyone who is interested in an unbiased report.

Sometimes I feel like I’m back in grade school where people giggled over “dirty’ pictures.
“Weiners”….if you’ve got a Boehner??? Cute!! Go sit in the back corner, child.

Well, at least Weiner is a Democrat. Bookman won’t notice what he does. That’s against the rules.

Mighty Righty,
After reading the wikipedia report I really don’t have much of a problem with what West did. He certainly could have handled it a little better but that’s easy to say as someone who wasn’t there.
Joe Mama provided a link earlier on the same subject and of course the link if I remember correctly was from the ACLU- no credibility there of course. Wonder why Joe didn’t use the wikipedia link considering he often posts wikipedia as a source as opposed to an ACLU link?

and he said as much. Move along, nothing to see here. (Same for Weiner at this point, details to follow)

Dusty,
Looks to like Weiner’s account was possibly hacked. But at the press conference he had he adamantly refused to answer a simple yes/no question as to whether or not he sent the twitter to the 21 year old lady. Truly an arrogant man. This guy emits more hot air than the equator.

The gays can be fixed if they go to the right places like churches. It wouldn’t cost the government a dime and would keep our military in top shape. Unfortunately, Hussein Obama has used the military as a social experiment. This installed-president has damaged the military beyond recognition.
Amen,

Okay, let’s apply Jay’s logic to the marriage debate. If you don’t want to abide by the federal law, and the myriad of state laws that forbid same-sex marriage, move to a state/country that does, or don’t get married.

Jay, you never fail to amuse me. You have no idea what it takes to defend a fighting position or go on a patrol in hostile territory. Espirt de corps and unit cohesion is very important. You are as you alway are, without a clue.

What group has made that comment before? I wish I could remember. It’ll come to me.

Gandalf,
I served with gay men my whole career. Never had a problem with them at all…especially “in country”. Then we all wanted the same thing…to stay alive. These old “the gay is out to convert you” attitudes are so passe…unless you are secretly hoping to be converted…just sayin’

This makes sense only if you believe that it’s “fair” for Republicans to invent their own “Democrat sex scandal” as “payback” for Democrats capitalizing on what Chris Lee did to himself. Yes, Democrats jump all over it — or “sensationalize” it — when a Republican does something weird and scandalous. But…Chris Lee’s picture had his face in it, and the recipient of the picture confirmed the story. If you can’t understand why the MSM would treat these stories differently (hint: not “liberal bias”!) you are maybe guilty of substituting wishful thinking for analysis.

Mornin’ peeps. With all the stuff going on, the last thing Congress should be worried about is homosexual military members. Balance a damn budget first, and you might get a little credibility on other areas.

the Snakes from the right just will not let us rest:
and here’s why, from your link, emphasis mine:
In interviews, a few evangelical leaders said they were wary of Mr. Reed, perhaps more because of his pragmatism than his past, but none would criticize him on the record. More common was the view of Tom Minnery, a vice president at Focus on the Family, who said: “I’m sure that Ralph learned a valuable lesson from that period in his life. But he’s a very talented man, and we welcome all the players.”
Put more plainly: absent being caught with a live boy/dead girl in bed, America’s radical clerics will always support their own.
