Herman Cain doesn’t take the presidency seriously

Did I mention that Herman Cain is not a legitimate candidate for president?

Last week, you may recall, Cain refused to reveal what his policy would be toward Afghanistan. We’ve been fighting there for almost a decade; more than 100,000 American soldiers are putting their lives on the line as we sit here, and Cain, a man who criticizes President Obama for not having a clear foreign policy, says he doesn’t want to “shoot from the lip” by suggesting what course this country should take next.

He says that once elected, he would talk to the experts and generals and come up with a plan about what to do. As I noted at the time, it’s the kind of answer Miss South Carolina might give in the beauty pageant Q&A. In fact, such a lack of preparation is downright disrespectful. Cain is offering himself as a potential commander in chief and asking people to take him seriously, yet the issue of American troops fighting and dying in a far-off land for almost a decade simply hasn’t been important enough to him to justify study and thought.

And then there’s this:

In his announcement speech Saturday, Cain accused President Obama of “throwing Israel under the bus.” On Sunday, Fox News put Cain on the air, sitting him down for an interview with Chris Wallace:

Cain has clearly never encountered the term “right of return,” a phrase familiar to anyone who has done even 20 minutes of research into the Middle East conundrum. He does not know that the Palestinian claim of a “right of return,” if implemented, would mean hundreds of thousands if not millions of Palestinians now living elsewhere would be allowed to return to live in what is now the heart of Israel. He proudly claims that he would offer the Palestinians nothing, yet in saying that the right of return is something to be negotiated, he offers them everything, right down to the destruction of Israel. Yet in that ignorance, he feels qualified to assert what he calls “the Cain doctrine” regarding the Middle East.

I’m sorry. You forfeit any claim as a legitimate candidate if you do not even know what the term “right of return” means. As with the Afghanistan issue, it reflects not merely a lack of knowledge, but even worse, a basic lack of interest and respect for the high office that he seeks and for the voters who support him.

Cain talks a lot about his business career. Well, any job candidate who walked into an interview as proudly ill-prepared as Cain would be bounced out the door immediately.

– Jay Bookman

UPDATE: Cain has issued the following “clarification”:

“Stockbridge, GA)- In an interview this morning on FOX News Sunday with Christopher Wallace, Herman Cain addressed the issue of “right of return” for the country of Israel. In clarification of these remarks, Mr. Cain released the following statement:

I have long been a vocal and unwavering supporter of our friend and ally, Israel.

All Israeli governments have rejected the “right” of large numbers of Arabs or Palestinians to return to what is now the state of Israel. Such an en masse return would unbalance Israel’s demographic makeup as the world’s sole Jewish state.

In this light, should the “right of return” “be negotiated,” as I said, “if that is a decision that Israel wants to make”? Certainly, and to reiterate, it’s Israel’s call. Israel has a long record of being more gracious to its enemies than its enemies are to it, and this would be yet another example of that. But is the “right of return” a moral imperative? Is it something Israel must grant? Is it something the United States ought to encourage?

The answer is no on every count.

Our policy on Palestinian affairs must be wholly a function of our policy on Israeli affairs. Israel is a friend. Israel is an ally. Israel shares common values with us. Israel shares common interests with us, especially in the eradication of terrorism and the need for bringing peace to the region. As President, I will never lose sight of these basic facts. Any aspirant to the Presidency must have the unshakable US-Israeli alliance at the core of his or her strategic vision in the Middle East.

As your President, I would. “

jm: A. When he was running for office.

WRONG. He said the war in Afghan was a “good” war unlike the War in Iraq.

B. Are you that clueless? Obama increased the troop strength by 25,000 troops after taking office?

That was the surge to try and root out the AQ’s defensive positions and terror cells in Afghanistan. That has nothing to do with the Agreement Bush signed before he left office to draw down troops. It’s called HISTORY and not even ancient history at that. These events are less than 5 years old!! Were you trapped in a time warp or something these past few years?

At least Bush went to Congress to get the votes to wage war in Iraq. Obama just wages wars without the consent of Congress.

What “war” has Obama waged?

I believe that’s what the current White House occupant has done. As a candidate he was all for exiting Afghanistan PDQ, but as soon as the generals got ahold of him they turned him around. Of course they’re going to lobby for continuing military action – they’re the military, that’s their bread and butter. My biggest disappointment with BHO is that he’s allowed the generals to lead him around by the nose.

But, again, I don’t even see what’s so troubling to you about the word “socialist” even, since that’s clearly what we have RIGHT NOW as we speak, namely socialism for the bankers and Wall St. power class but something a little different for all the rest.

I challenge you to demonstrate that we do not NOW have a system that is effectively what Michael Lewis calls “socialism for the bankers and capitalism for everyone else”. I challenge you.

Yes Herman Cain has flaws. He is certainly not as eloquent or knowledgeable has past presidential candidates. He did not attend an Ivey League institution. I appreciate the idea of electing an individual who is not a career political elitist. That aspect alone makes this man more viable for me. I am more excited about Ron Paul but face the facts that he is too old and not pretty enough for the Time magazine crowd so I won’t get my hopes up, but if Obama can be elected then Cain can be.

That being said, You, Mr. Bookman are a prime example of the elitist’s hacks that are responsible for the disastrous situation our nation finds itself. A product of the baby boomer, hippicrats who have steadily pried liberty and freedom from the generations who have follow. Who are directly responsible for one of the worst educational systems in the westernized world. Who are continuously assaulting our first amendment guaranties and privacy rights. Who degrade the private sector in favor of the public sector. Who pretend to empathize with the “working people” while directly working against our best interests. Who have created generations of government dependent lazy illiterate myrmidons who are just electoral fodder during election years for the ruling elite. The neo McCarthyism movement. You are a cog in collective state-ist virus infecting our future, yet another media drone passing on the potus line No longer the people’s watchdog, so your rejection of Cain should, if anything, a reason to pay this candidate more attention.

Our right of return should be the return of opportunity and liberty to control our American destiny from the 60’s closet Marxists thieves who have steadily be stealing it from our generations.

Why is it that the U.S. seems to tread so carefully on it’s comments concerning Israel. Even if Israel is an ally does this mean any criticism has to be backed off because Israel turns it’s sights on you.

Everyone who aspires to public office in the U.S. seems to bow at the alter of Israel. This is a country who has been caught spying on us twice isn’t it?

So it’s OK for Israel to have a right of return but the not the Palestinians?

“Israel has a long record of being more gracious to its enemies than its enemies are to it”. Wow! There has been a report issued detailing the effects of malnutricion on the children of Palestines embargoed people. They lack clean water and the ability to get proper foods, their ability to travel has been restricted so even seeking medical care can take weeks. Essential functions like education and waste removal have been stifled by the Israeli government, even to the point of gasoline rations.

I say again there is no benefit in Israel reaching a “peace” agreement with the Palestinians because there is no reward for them to take away from it. The status of perpetual victim is one that is cultivated and fed by all who won’t stand up and say what’s wrong with Israeli policy. Instead every politician goes before AIPAC and bows down swearing that we will do everything in our power to support Israel in it’s inhumane treatment of others.

It is with this backdrop that Americans march in lockstep with their support and as science has told us for every action there is a reaction. They don’t hate America because their jealous, they have far more substantive reasoning to employ. There will never be any in that land as long as that peace is structured on lies, theivery and injustice. So I guess in that since America and Israel are blood brothers.

Are those the only reasons why we are in such bad shape?

If you think tax breaks hurt the economy,

“It is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high and tax revenues are too low and the soundest way to raise the revenues in the long run is to cut the rates now … Cutting taxes now is not to incur a budget deficit, but to achieve the more prosperous, expanding economy which can bring a budget surplus.”

– John F. Kennedy, Nov. 20, 1962, president’s news conference

“Lower rates of taxation will stimulate economic activity and so raise the levels of personal and corporate income as to yield within a few years an increased – not a reduced – flow of revenues to the federal government.”

– John F. Kennedy, Jan. 17, 1963, annual budget message to the Congress, fiscal year 1964

“In today’s economy, fiscal prudence and responsibility call for tax reduction even if it temporarily enlarges the federal deficit – why reducing taxes is the best way open to us to increase revenues.”

– John F. Kennedy, Jan. 21, 1963, annual message to the Congress: “The Economic Report Of The President”

“It is no contradiction – the most important single thing we can do to stimulate investment in today’s economy is to raise consumption by major reduction of individual income tax rates.”

– John F. Kennedy, Jan. 21, 1963, annual message to the Congress: “The Economic Report Of The President”

“Our tax system still siphons out of the private economy too large a share of personal and business purchasing power and reduces the incentive for risk, investment and effort – thereby aborting our recoveries and stifling our national growth rate.”

– John F. Kennedy, Jan. 24, 1963, message to Congress on tax reduction and reform, House Doc. 43, 88th Congress, 1st Session.

GLL: You talk about facts, but all you post are lies. For example:

The Great Health Care Bill now has over 1,000 deferments, given as political favors.

Waterboarding linked to finding bin Laden.

Those are lies, not facts.

Jay 10:26 – one more note.

I see gobs of flip-flopping on the left. The only reason Republicans aren’t calling him out on it is because they don’t want to appear hyper-partisan AND because they’re generally in favor of the expansion of executive power and they also supported huge expansions in federal power under Bush.

I accept the need to do some unpleasant things (surveillance, etc). But I’m not in favor of the expansive powers being granted the Executive branch by law, and by fiat. And I wish Democrats would at least attempt to adhere to the rules they try to apply to everyone else so as to not be so hypocritical (like Obama’s campaign fundraising reform rules which he himself tossed out the window).

Dems are a party adrift.

but it’s going in the RIGHT direction, not careening off a cliff, which is where we were on Jan 20, 2009

“The Great Health Care Bill now has over 1,000 deferments, given as political favors.”

and you have proof that they were given out as favors??? we keep hearing you and Pdiddy complain about it, but you guys never show any evidence.

waterboarding – oh? you know it was waterboarding? and what about all the waterboarding that didn’t give us ANYthing – or, even worse, gave us INCORRECT info … hey, gotta break a few eggs, right? (easy to say when it’s not your son)

again – almost every gov’t ally??? got proof of that?

“People around the world today view the United States more positively than at any time since the second Iraq war,” said Doug Miller, chairman of international polling firm GlobeScan, which carried out the poll with the Program on International Policy Attitudes (Pipa) at the University of Maryland.

“While still well below that of countries like Germany and the UK, the global standing of the US is clearly on the rise again.”

No one with an (R) by their name takes anything seriously, according to liberals. Nothing new to see here.

I’ll bet Cain knows how many states there are in the US. I’ll also bet that he understands islands don’t capsize, regardless of how many people are on them. I’m also sure he doesn’t advocate passing a law to see what’s in it.

It could be argued that Democrats don’t take education seriously (except when passing tax increases to throw more money at the problem).

Jay,

You might be correct. Cain might not be a legitimate candidate for president, but that doesn’t seem to be a requirement any longer. The election of Obama proves that this nation will elect anyone, regardless of track record or proven experience. Cain may not be the best candidate, but at least he has nothing to hide and he is a true American. He is better on his worst day than Obama is on his best.

willie lynch: “Why is it that the U.S. seems to tread so carefully on it’s comments concerning Israel. Even if Israel is an ally does this mean any criticism has to be backed off because Israel turns it’s sights on you.”

My, what a refreshingly reasonable and honest reflection (10:31). Shhh. Better keep it down. You’ll get yourself accused of being a liberal/socialist/fascist/Obama lover if you’re not careful.

Haven’t you heard this thought was declared out of bounds of the party line? The very act of thought itself – as Newt learned in the little firestorm he kicked off last week – has been declared out of bounds by the Stalinists at party central.

“Instead every politician goes before AIPAC and bows down swearing that we will do everything in our power to support Israel in it’s inhumane treatment of others”

But why bother having that argument when you can just seize on what was or wasn’t said in the speech given as evidence of scandalous betrayal. All you have to do is invent a meme (”he threw Israel under the bus”), circulate it, and the rest takes care of itself as actual thought gets shut down.

Thanks! I do enjoy that show.

One of my favorites was the segment where they read three news stories, two bogus and the object is to pick the real one.

The winner? Two teenage girls in Australia, I think Melbourne, decided to explore the underground tunnel system. Got hopelessly lost. Had cellphones. Their solution? They logged in to Facebook, updated their status and waited for a few hours for someone to read it and call the authorities.

Not…. kidding……

If all that’s true, then why didn’t y’all try harder to draft Cain for Governor last year?

You could have gotten him elected instead of the walking indictment we’ve got, and Cain could have gotten some valuable governing experience for a later run at the presidency.

Frankly, I think all this talk from the right about how great Cain is and how wonderful a President he would be is just a bunch of wishful thinking paired with whistling past the graveyard. If he’s the best y’all have to offer, then I’m not worrying about 2012.

And no, I’m not afraid of him. By all means, get him nominated and run him against Obama. Please throw me in that briar patch, B’rer Fox.

Anyone?

Bueller?….

Bueller?…

I’ll play your game………………..the likes of Obama, and most of the GOP field……………….don’t CARE how many states there are. To them, and their like-minded sycophants, the U.S. is just ONE big state.
They adhere to the silly and dangerous belief that “federal law” trumps “state law”.The idea of a state within a state is anathema to a centralized statist.(mere speed bumps).
.
Fortunantly, millions think otherwise and are accutely aware of our Declaration of Independence.
.
Basically, Obama and company wish to Detroitize all fifty states.Good, decent, and independent people everywhere wish otherwise.
.
Our only hope……………………………….Ron Paul. You will hear the people roar this leading up to 2012.

DDR – I was referring to Obama’s promise to adhere to the federal matching funds process for campaigns which implicitly limits the amount that can be raised. Which Obama threw out the window before he was 1/2 through with his 2008 campaign.
