I just finished reading Princeton academic Cornel West’s diatribe against Barack Obama, in which West complains that “my dear brother Barack Obama has a certain fear of free black men” and calls Obama “a black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and a black puppet of corporate plutocrats.”
West frames his disenchantment in terms of class struggle, and argues that Obama has chosen the wrong side, selling out less fortunate Americans in return for the favor of the powerful.
“The escalation of the class war against the poor and the working class is intense,” West writes. “More and more working people are beaten down. They are world-weary. They are into self-medication. They are turning on each other. They are scapegoating the most vulnerable rather than confronting the most powerful.”
“When you look at a society you look at it through the lens of the least of these, the weak and the vulnerable; you are committed to loving them first, not exclusively, but first, and therefore giving them priority,” West writes.
Many on the left do criticize Obama for being too mainstream and insufficiently aggressive on behalf of those less fortunate. While that debate is legitimate, I think those who make such claims are for the most part politically naive about Obama himself and about the political environment in which he operates. But again, it is a legitimate topic of discussion. The issue of whether Obama has been too gentle with Wall Street and its supporters is particularly pertinent, given their role in creating our current predicament.
But West does not discuss it legitimately.
In West’s account, Obama has sided with the rich and powerful in part because he “feels most comfortable with upper middle-class white and Jewish men who consider themselves very smart, very savvy and very effective in getting what they want.” But as in most rants, this one includes a tell, an unwitting revelation of its deeper motivation.
“I used to call my dear brother [Obama] every two weeks. I said a prayer on the phone for him, especially before a debate. And I never got a call back. And when I ran into him in the state Capitol in South Carolina when I was down there campaigning for him he was very kind. The first thing he told me was, ‘Brother West, I feel so bad. I haven’t called you back. You been calling me so much. You been giving me so much love, so much support and what have you.’ And I said, ‘I know you’re busy.’ But then a month and half later I would run into other people on the campaign and he’s calling them all the time. I said, wow, this is kind of strange. He doesn’t have time, even two seconds, to say thank you or I’m glad you’re pulling for me and praying for me, but he’s calling these other people. I said, this is very interesting. And then as it turns out with the inauguration I couldn’t get a ticket with my mother and my brother. I said this is very strange. We drive into the hotel and the guy who picks up my bags from the hotel has a ticket to the inauguration. My mom says, ‘That’s something that this dear brother can get a ticket and you can’t get one, honey, all the work you did for him from Iowa.’ Beginning in Iowa to Ohio. We had to watch the thing in the hotel.”
When you committed to “look at a society … through the lens of the least of these, the weak and the vulnerable,” when “you are committed to loving them first … and therefore giving them priority,” you do not whine that the lowly person picking up your bags for you in your very expensive DC hotel somehow wrangled a ticket to the inauguration, while you, the very well-paid Ivy League academic and cultural star who walks among the elite, did not. You cannot attack another for seeking the trappings of power while complaining that you yourself were not supplied the trappings to which you feel yourself entitled.
Or if you do, you give the game away.
As Adam Serwer points out in The American Prospect, West also claims the self-anointed power to confirm or withdraw Obama’s standing as an authentic black man. West withdraws it on the basis of Obama’s ability to feel “at home” “with upper middle-class white and Jewish men” while allegedly harboring “fear of free black men.”
Serwer concludes:
“This remark made me wonder: Which of these men do you think is actually free, and which afraid of who he truly is?”

re, corporations have too much control over our lives. Not quite; no, the culprit is government. For example, for each gallon of gasoline pumped the oil company makes about 7 cents a gallon while the government takes almost 50 cents in taxes. But, the Dems call the CEO’s on the carpet. A big sideshow for the less informed.

Democrats Scale Back 2012 Map
A Democratic official familiar with the still-forming re-election campaign told Roll Call that the focus will be on holding the 2008 pickups of Colorado, Virginia and North Carolina, winning over Latino voters in the West and flooding the traditional swing states of Ohio and Florida with resources. The Democrats feel good about winning New Mexico and Nevada, especially given the population growth among Hispanics.

In thinking that President Obama could usher in some grand Black agenda is foolish and many Black people entertained those thoughts once he took office. The funny thing is many whites thought the same way.
Yeah, I’m sure you polled thousands upon thousands of Blacks to come to that conclusion.
If you want to know honestly what Blacks were thinking, many of US were thinking that finally a man would be judged by something other than the melanin content of his skin. In reality, it seems like nothing about Obama can be discussed without eventually his race becoming part of the issue. Furthermore, many of us prayed that, once inaugurated, he simply made it the full 4 years of his term without being assassinated.
Black agenda……..
*where do people get such bullshiiite………
Top 100 contributors in the 2008 election….. I wonder who got the most…….. who is in whose pocket…. Now you know why the Dems are pushing so hard for their Groups…… for the good of the American people… no, just a few of the American people.
2008? How many of those groups overwhelmingly contributed to the Democratic Party in 2010, which was the most recent election? People with money use the money to buy off whomever is in power. It’s not about Democrat/GOP or Liberal/Conservative for them. It’s only about maintaining control over the direction of the government for their benefit.
DDR: I’m hoping by his second term that “Angry Black Man”, will come out to play.
He has to get that term first. Unfortunately, I don’t think he has an ABM in him. He may have to hire somebody for that position. If he does have an ABM inside, he’s a hell of a lot better in controlling it than any other brotha I know. After all that’s been said and such, everybody I know, me included, would have pulled a serious ABM press conference by now.

I liked your article, Jay. Believe me, Barck Obama has nothing to fear from anything Cornel West, a pretender of the highest order, may say, write, or do. In fact, you could almost make Cornel West a symbol (not the only cause, but a symbol) of everything that is wrong in academia today. Back in the nineties, Lawrence Summers (former Obama advisor) was the Prez of Harvard University, and Cornel West was a highly-tenured and celebrated professor of Liberal Progressive Socialistic Politically Correct Studies — or something like that — at Harvard (a pass-fail course based on no work, no text book, and no hassles, but having the correct poltical ideology and the ability to engage the prof and to sound brilliantly well read and informed while BS-ing in class for a whole semester – a characteristic of all such courses). Before he was brought up on charges by the Harvard thought and speech police — and excommunicated by the Harvard Diocese of the Holy Mother of the Politically Correct — for daring to suggest that it is that men and women may have different hard-wiring that allows them to be more successful in some areas of endeavor than the oppositie sex — Summers had the unmitigated audacity to question the lack and quality of research (if any), the quality of scholarship, and the almost non-existent work-ethic of the aforesaid, highly-tenured, and clebrated Professor West. Why? Because all you have to do is listen to West (often trotted out on TV and news shows as the brilliant, intellectual African-American college professor with lots of brilliant stuff to say about political and social issues that no one else ever even thought of. But, there is a reason for that. No legitimate brilliant tenured Havard/Princeton college professor (regardless of race), or professor from any other school, would be able to think up such completely goofy, unfounded, off the wall, and illogical and nonsensical clap trap and then palm it off as some brilliant and insightful intellectual observation of the current political and social scene. If you think I am picking on this guy, just watch him on TV for about 5 minutes – that will be about all you can stand anyway. The celebrated professor was highly insulted by President Summers for his “way too close to home” observations, and cut a deal with the Princeton Diocese of the Holy Mother of Political Correctness and Affirmative Action, and took is celebrity professor self and headed for much greener pastures before anyone got the notion to see if Summers’ observations were correct – not poltically correct, just correct. Not long after, the Politically Correct Inquisition burned Summers at the stake at Harvard, and he went to work for Obama. It’s a big old goofy world out there — just ask Professor West.

And my own comment, I said it way back when, just wait until President Obama IS President of the United States of America,,,a lot of folks are going to be greatly disappointed and the attack from the left is going to make the righties look like charming and tolerant folks…well, here it is…
Quite frankly, i’m glad Cornel is disappointed…it just goes to add to what I’ve been saying of late in my mid term assessment of our President…he’s moved toward the center and he has stayed above the race-baiters of both sides and has, indeed, been post racial. He gets points from me in that.

While there is a certain degree of bitterness in Dr. West’s accusations, what he mainly complains about he is correct about. We as a civilized society need to collectively aid those who are less fortunate and in need of help. Cutting heating assistance to the poor and then giving millionaires tax breaks is ethically wrong, no matter how you look at it. Extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and then cutting teachers, firemen, librarians and policemen who make our society a better and safer place to live is ethically wrong. Obama is siding with wealthy interests by omission when he refuses to engage in the collective fight for these people. I

I had to read Cornell West in college and he and his writings along with Obama make me sick to my stomach. Both are black radicals, both believe in taking other people’s property and giving it to others just because and both belong in academia and not running the country. West is a black bigot, read any of his writings. I compare him to the black KKK.

Smart and resourceful, as usual.
Y’know, when I read AmVet’s 4:18, I thought of Jake in Two and a Half Men talking to one of Charlie’s dates and saying “’scuse me, I gotta go take a shower…”

OOOOwwwwww there they go again @ 4:18: Bush tax cuts for the wealthy! NO it was tax cuts for all of us ’cause we don’t want to send beaucoup money to Washington where they don’t know a deficit from a hole in the ground. The wealthy paid more taxes than the rest of us so get over trying to rip off more of their money… They made it! You did not make their money so don’t tell them what to do with it. .

lynnie gal you post is democratic propaganda. Obama’s stimulus did nothing for the economy but for government workers. Every government program like heating assistance are full of waste, fraud and abuse. Channel 5 did a report on EBT or some type of care to assist people and they bought liquor not food for their kids. Tax-cuts some of them I don’t agree with them but you CAN”T HELP EVERYBODY ITS NOT POSSIBLE AND UNTIL WE IN THIS COUNTRY UNDERSTAND THAT WE WILL GO BROKE BECAUSE THE WAR ON POVERTY HAS FAILED. What is better to give a person a fish or teach them to fish?
