It’s been a good month to be Atlanta’s own Herman Cain.
As May began, Cain was declared the clear winner of South Carolina’s GOP presidential debate. Last week, a Zogby interactive poll of Republican primary voters put Cain in second place, behind only New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who isn’t even running. And at the Georgia Republican Convention in Macon over the weekend, Cain basked in cheers and standing ovations that dwarfed those drawn by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
But for all the fervor, let’s be honest: Cain is not a legitimate candidate for president.
That doesn’t mean Cain should be dismissed or ignored. Quite the contrary; he’s important because he is giving voice to the fears and resentment of millions of Americans who see this country and their place in it diminished by powers beyond their control. His support is drawn from the same part of the GOP base that once embraced Sarah Palin and, briefly, Donald Trump. Like Palin and Trump, Cain may not be well-versed on policy, but he knows what he knows, and he’s willing to put it bluntly:
“The objective of the liberals is to destroy this country,” he told a conservative conference in Washington in February. “The objective of the liberals is to make America mediocre. … That’s their objective. Well, let me tell you something about mediocrity. It’s not in an American’s DNA to be mediocre.”
To Americans worried that their country might be losing its status as an economic and military superpower — a fear that’s all too justified — such words resonate. However, it is not the rhetoric of a man capable of becoming president. It is the rhetoric of a talk-radio host, armed with the one-liners, pat answers and applause lines honed by sitting night after night at the microphone.
As Rush Limbaugh put it after watching the South Carolina debate, “Herman Cain made me think I was listening to me in every answer.”
As his backers are quick to point out, Cain is more than a radio talker. He enjoyed a successful corporate career, rising to CEO of Godfather’s Pizza and serving as chair of the Federal Reserve Board in Kansas City. While that’s impressive, politics and business are very different fields. Michael Jordan was the best basketball player in history, but as athletic as he was, he couldn’t hit a curve ball. At the top echelons of any endeavor, skill sets don’t transfer easily.
Finally, there’s the added dimension of Cain’s race. Conservatives are not merely proud to be seen as supporting a black man for president, some see his race as a club to be used to bludgeon their opponents. Cain understands that aspect of his appeal, and he’s not shy about milking it.
In that February speech, as in many of his speeches, Cain sympathized with fellow conservatives for being “called racist simply because you disagree with the president, who happens to be black.”
“Well, I got a breaking news announcement for you,” Cain told them. “You are not a racist; you are patriots because you’re willing to stand up for what you believe in. Patriots.”
Like Cain, blogger Andrew Breitbart has risen to prominence thanks to a willingness to voice what traditional conservative leaders will not. And he makes no bones about embracing Cain as a way to blow the minds of those who label conservatives as racist. He even envisions Allen West, an extremely conservative black congressman from Florida who also was raised here in Atlanta, as Cain’s 2012 running mate.
“That ticket would blow up the death star of political correctness that the left uses against the right,” he said, and it’s hard to argue that point.
In fact, the only thing more surreal than a black Atlantan heading the GOP ticket would be two black Atlantans heading the GOP ticket.

“The objective of the liberals is to destroy this country. The objective of the liberals is to make this country mediocre.” Really Mr. Cain?, Right wing extremist, Conservatives were well on their way to reaching those objectives, when President Obama came into office and began reversing them. Mr. Cain, while more intelligent, is as legitimate a candidate as Palin, Bachman, and the other Republicans in the remaining field. Unfotunately for all of them, being a legitimate candidate doesn’t mean being able to beat President Obama in 2012, or being better for our country.

“But your statement about the most honored Atlantans (for the most part they were all elected to office somewhere) also disproves your statement that Southerners are too backwards to vote for a progressive.”
————————————————————
You keep misquoting me, (ir)Rational, I never said that “Southerners are too backwards.” I would never use the word “backwards” and I did not. I did try to encourage Southerners to break free of their “givens” in their worldview, as I did fifty years ago, which I stated.
The four people I listed from Atlanta Magazine’s 50 most honored (Ralph McGill, progressive editorial writer and publisher of the Atlanta Constitution; Robert Woodruff, businessman and philanthropist; Ted Turner, entrepreneur and world peace advocate; and Martin Luther King, Jr (visionary) were never elected to public office. All of the 50 were progressives and only a handfull were elected to public office in Georgia. However, they helped to make the South more erudite and less fearful of those who are not within the mainstream.

The theme of the article was that Cain wasn’t qualified to be president Everything he said about Cain was actually positive except for this statement: “In fact, the only thing more surreal than a black Atlantan heading the GOP ticket would be two black Atlantans heading the GOP ticket.”
That’s the thing about you libs. Because you elected a half white Harvard educated elitist to the White House, you think that it gives you the right to say anything and get a pass.
Be very afraid of Herman Cain. The overt racism of the Party of George Wallace is bubbling to the surface and I’m not the only one noticing. Jay’s entire article only lacked the word “uppity” to complete the picture.

“are you going to give any evidence as to why cain is not a legitimate candidate? you didn’t mention anything about that except for the title of your article.”
Jays only point or actually a non-point is that Cain is not a legitimate candidate because he had too much private sector experience instead of a glowing political resume like Obama. Of course prior to B.O.’s election he only served one year in the federal government as a senator. No significant previous experience outside of being a community activist and an Illinois state senator with zero business credentials. So it appears that Jay’s viewpoint on proper experience is somewhat narrow and confines itself to a government related background.

Conservatives tend to look at what each candidate has accomplished when making a decision about who to vote for. Liberals and Independents tend to be governed by emotion and usually respond to rhetoric. This is the reason you guys voted for a guy with a very thin resume. Well, we’ll see, won’t we?
I moved to Atlanta in the late 90’s. I think now of how many times I listened to Herman Cain on the radio BEFORE I had any idea he was black (as if it matters, because it does not) – it was a lot, perhaps years. He’s a candidate well deserving of thoughtful and respectful consideration. If I vote for him it will be because his message resonates with me and I believe he’s capable of handling the job. As of now, he’s right up at the top of a very short list of candidates meeting that criteria.

Oh I wouldn’t doubt it for a second. But what does that really prove? We’re by definition talking about a “power couple” here. Both of them are at the pinnacle of the American high achievement class. At issue though was debunking the ridiculous claim, repeated by one of the stragglers here, following the unscrupulous demagogue Donald Trump (a man who himself was born with ten thousand times the natural advantages in life that Obama had), that Obama is an “affirmative action” charity case. Which is an absurd claim that can be dismissed by listening to the man talk for 5 minutes.
But again, this is all predicated on the claim of YOUR side today that intelligence, narrowly defined, is a key qualifier. Which I reject, because we tend to define intelligence too narrowly. And for the record, I’m equally critical of those on the left who claim that one should withhold criticism of Obama on the grounds that he’s so “intelligent” (so much more so than the rest of us) and thus should be trusted to know what he’s doing. A claim that I reject just as much.

The Michael Jordan analogy was a poor one. The idea that a career politican is the only one best qualified to run this country is the reason why America’s political system has turned into garbage. The reason Obama won is because the average voter didn’t look at him as a career politician. Obama didn’t just beat McCain, he beat Clinton who was probably the overall favorite to win in the first place. We’ve been voting for the lesser of evils for a long time and people were frankly so sick of the status quo from all parties (Democrats, Republicans, and Libertarians) that they went with the candidate who did not appear to be as entrenched in the system as the career political candidates.
Cain is just the Republican version of what Obama represents as the “new kid on the block” candidate. Our politicians should come from some working sector of our society, not defacto lawyers and career politicians. Now I’m not saying someone who has moved up from office to office is bad, but we shouldn’t assume that a career politician is the only one who can make good political decisions. I like Cain’s comments this week that a good leader surrounds himself/herself with qualified people who can offer the best advice and insight into the issue at hand so the leader can make the best informed decision in line with his/her beliefs.
As for Jay’s main point, it’s squarely on far right conservative voters to decide if Cain is legit. Don’t point the finger at liberals on this one. The proof will be in the voting. Cain seems to be the best conservative candidate on the surface. Let’s see the mainstream Right get behind him if he continues to hold up well heading into the primaries.

First of all no one who becomes President has experience as such, until they have been on the job. While I don’t consider myself to be a democrat or republican I believe that Mr. Cain given the potential candidates on the right has a good shot at the nomination. One thing he has is he’s his own person. Which to me is essential because many become easily influenced once they are sworn in. It really doesn’t matter to me that he has had experience in the private sector. He does have an impressive resume and has a lot to offer but I’m looking for a President with “common sense”. That requires no degree. Most of our economic problems we are currently in comes from a country and individuals living on the edge with debt, living above their means and not doing things in moderation. Sorry, but true. Remember what Nancy Pelosi said about healthcare “That’s why we have to pass it, so you’ll know what’s in it”. Ha? Correction your job is to inform the people first and then pass it. That’s why I don’t really support one side over the other. I do feel President Obama is going to be hard to beat. Glad Donald Trump isn’t running. I would of voted for Donald Duck before Donald Trump. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul? Too old. The Republicans should of learned from McCain. People are looking for more youthful leadership. Sarah Palin? People only follow her because she looks good. Romney? Over. Huckabee? Decided not to run. So if you look today at the potential candidates that are legitimate, I believe Mr. Cain although up there in age,but because of his experience and personality may be more of a stronger candidate than people think. No one thought in a million years that Obama would of won Iowa during the primary and look what happened. Wouldn’t that be something, two blacks as the nominees for their perspective parties in 2012.

It is ashamed that Cain will not be taken seriously because there is a lot of merit to what he has to say. As a small business owner, I am gradually coming out of the recession not because of Obama, but despite him. I made a conscious decision a year ago to emphasize distribution channels in China and India because that is where the growth is. I only saw punitive measures for business coming out of Washington with lots of finger pointing and no real plan to encourage investment or domestic growth. Here in the U.S., we are not going to grow as long as Obama is in office. I had a meeting last week to discuss liquidity options for my company and it became very obvious that New York is not going to be the finance center of the world much longer. London, Hong Kong, and other exchanges offer much more attractive IPO options because of the tax structure and regulatory restrictions here in the U.S. Obama does not understand this. If you constantly attack the people who generate wealth and jobs in a community, eventually they will move to a more friendly market. Nothing against Obama as a person, he simply is too expensive to do business with.

Then may I suggest not responding and then having side bar conversations about dumb idiotic post by few rougue bigots and attempt to place blame at the feet of the group as a whole?
That may help some. Also be willing to call people out of whom you agree with for bigoted statements with whom you agree, not only with whom you disagree.

bosch,
no one would ever call you racist again if the classification of race was eliminated from our culture. it starts at birth when the race of your parents is placed on your birth certificate. this classification would be outlawed. no one would be a racist, you just would like some people and not others. or you would love all of humanity or perhaps hate all of humanity. we are the same species, the racial classification is in of itself a bias.

Somehow everything in life relates to race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.

All Jay is saying is that in comparison, Hermain Cain isnt a legitiment candidate as say a Micheal Steele would be politically.
It has nothing to do with race, but if the right is going to make it about race, then understand that Jay would probably say Micheal Steele would be considered a legitiment candidate Vs Cain.
Cain is just like a Palin or Trump….they say things to get a reaction. To excite the base, yet again, neither are Presidential material.

Point taken. The reason I said something about it today is because I felt it was time that somebody said something. I don’t think that I should have to call out anybody for saying such things. I usually try to avoid things like that, because Jay can attest to the fact that I can sometimes lose my cool over things dealing with racial implications.
I don’t call out those that I agree with too often, but I have spoken up about things like that when it riles my nerves. I guess I should make more effort so that people see that and don’t think I’m just picking on one “side”.

You stated:
“nothing to lay crediance to why Mr. Cain is not a legitimate candidate other than he is another conservatinve that believes the government is the problem and not the solution. but then, that would be your typical stance, Government is the answer to all the problems.”
Allow meto respectfully call bull here. Please namethe last conservative president that actually shrank the government. I would wait on a response, but I’d be waiting forever. Conservatives don’t want a smaller government, they just want the priorities to be different. Instead of regulating big business, they would rather regulate a woman’s reproductive decisions. Instead of funding education, they would rather subsidize oil companies. Some of you have a problem with the tax rate, but you want clean water to drink, clean air to breathe and if a PRIVATE company causes a giant oil spill in the gulf you want government to step in a fix the problem. You are a case study in hypocrisy.
Private industry is only interested in doing something that they can profit from. Everything that is beneficial for the country as a whole will not always be profitable. Sometimes things have to be done simply for the greater good. That is where government comes in. We need a smarter, modern, more efficient government. Those things matter more than size. But continue with the talking points, don’t let me stop you.

Jay did not say anything about Herman Cain being bad or unqualified BECAUSE he is black. All you people insisting now that the left is racist probably also believe Obama is racist. What a crock! Get your heads out of the talk radio sand and learn something for a change.
I am half convinced you guys are making such claims because you think everyone on the left thinks everyone on the right is racist. Hint: WE DON’T THINK THAT. So stop trying to “get even.”

Any candidate that is committed to saving our country and getting us out of the hole our current President has dug for our country is a legitimate candidate. He is far more qualified than Obama, whose claim to fame before becoming President was being a community organizer. Maybe if someone ran our county like a business, our country wouldn’t be in this mess. No more nanny state, balance the budget, and get back to making America great! And these are the goals of Herman Cain.
