Bin Laden reportedly dead; killed in Pakistan operation

Well, it took too long, but it seems the time has finally come.

Osama bin Laden is dead. His body is apparently in American custody. Reports are that bin Ladin was killed in an American operation in Islamabad, Pakistan. President Obama is expected to brief the country soon.

This doesn’t solve anything politically or militarily, or end anything other than the life of a mass murderer. But this is a moment in which all Americans, regardless of party, should join in satisfaction.

UPDATE: In his speech, President Obama reports that bin Laden was killed in a firefight with U.S. personnel. Intelligence regarding bin Laden’s whereabouts first appeared in August, and was only recently confirmed. There were no U.S. casualties in the operation.

Obama appropriately credited those in the intelligence community who helped track bin Laden, and those who carried out the mission to kill him. I can only imagine the jubilation of those given the assignment once they realized that they had found their man.

UPDATE II: Former President Bush has released a statement as well:

“Earlier this evening, President Obama called to inform me that American forces killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of the al Qaeda network that attacked America on September 11, 2001. I congratulated him and the men and women of our military and intelligence communities who devoted their lives to this mission. They have our everlasting gratitude. This momentous achievement marks a victory for America, for people who seek peace around the world, and for all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001. The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done. “

My regrets are that it took 10 years and my son had to go to Afghanistan. On the other hand, another one bites the dust.

Catching and OR killing this guy was more important than anything else. This guy destroyed our national unity and if his head brings us back together, then so be it.

Personally, I think this ought to be viewed as an American success, not a political success. Let’s join in this moment together, as Americans, as we did almost a decade ago when the terror attacks occurred.

As usual, the delusional on here insist on assigning success or failure on a President, rather than the people who actually carried out the mission.

The President doesn’t drive up the debt, Congress does. He is an outside participant.

The President doesn’t develop military strategy, the Pentagon does. He merely approves it.

The President doesn’t drop a single bomb, fire a single bullet, or live for years undercover to get information. Never has, never will.

The continuing attempts to alternately vilify / beatify a President for something accomplished by others is ignorant and disgusting.

“guy destroyed our national unity”

No, he didn’t. He attacked us, and he destroyed some buildings and, more importantly, a few thousand lives. The immediate effect was to bring us CLOSER together, with each other and with the world.

Getalife, simply amazing that you say let’s see how the cons respond yet call them cons and have gloated this grand achievement by our men and women in the field. These men and women have given a small sense of justice if nothing else.
What a piece of work.
No matter how long I stay away from this site and have a hope for people to change I am sadly let down nearly without fail.
Congrats to all americans tonight!
