GOP: The birther craze was Obama’s fault

You know, the shamelessness required to utter things like this is just mind-boggling.

“We’re borrowing four and a half billion dollars a day and this president is more worried about birth certificates, Oprah Winfrey and fundraisers at the Waldorf Astoria,” (RNC Chairman Reince) Priebus complained on “CNN Newsroom” Thursday, a day after the president released his long-form Hawaii birth certificate and then jetted to Chicago for a long-scheduled interview with the daytime queen of talk.

“It’s maddening and I just wish the president would engage in the real issues that are affecting America.”

After years in which members of Preibus’ party and its right-wing media remora complain bitterly that Obama has refused to release his “long-form” birth certificate, spinning absurd fantasies in which a large portion of the GOP base eagerly swallows, the president finally relents and forces release of documents that any rational person already knew existed.

And suddenly it’s the president who is making this an issue and a distraction?

It’s pitiful. Just pitiful. Do they actually expect people to believe such nonsense? Unbelievable.

Then again, given that so many were willing to believe the birther craziness in the first place, it’s not too far-fetched to believe they’ll buy this too.

Obama should be the one for apologizing for not releasing the damn thing 2 years ago.

And the message has been well received… Every last Congressman/woman knows they have to produce documents to get vetted for security clearances. They all know Obama had to do the same thing. Those very Congressmen/women who did nothing to squelch that crap years ago are responsible for it dragging out for 2+ years. If I were Obama’s speechwriter, I would have had a cache of stock “Kiss my Ass” speeches for anytime someone brought up the birth certificate issue. He shouldn’t have had to show a damned thing to the American public.

Peadawg, you are correct. I agree it was crazy nonsense from the start, but all Obama had to do was exactly what he did this week and it all would have been done and settled. It comes with the territory as a public official that you have to deal with some things you’d rather not waste your time with but they all have to deal with it. You have to think that there was at least some political calculating going on at the White House to determine how best to use this to their advantage.

this really is one of the more fantastic reads over the last few years.——–

As I see it, the two sides in the current dispute have each got hold of one half of the truth. which they proclaim to be the whole truth. It was the hard right that took the initiative by arguing that the government is the cause of all our difficulties; and the so-called left, in so far as it exists, has been forced to defend the need for regulating the private sector and providing government services.

Though I am often painted as the representative of the far left — and I am certainly not free of political bias — I recognize that the other side is half right in claiming that the government is wasteful and inefficient and ought to function better.

Obama decided to be cute by posting the short form instead of the real birth certificate with signatures.

He intentionally did this to create concern and consternation.

The media aided and abetted the charade by labeling the short form as “the birth certificate”.

Obama ate humble pie and so did the media.

Even in deciding to come clean, Obama didn’t do what everyone else does, namely, take a picture of the negative (the birth certificates are on microfiche) and instead has his Hawaii government accomplices print it up on modern day paper.

In all the other 49 states you can go get a copy of your original birth certificate for the asking. You could do the same in Hawaii until last year when they changed the law to give Obama cover. Birth certificates are generated at the time of birth to settle future disputes about paternity and inheritance. That’s why they make a family member, the Doctor and a governmental official sign it. Moreover, these documents are kept forever. Hawaii has kept them since 1852. They don’t keep them so that they don’t have to show them.

Under the current rules Obama didn’t have to post anything because there is no requirement to do so. Until this matter came up, no one realized how asinine the rules were about being placed on the ballot. Apparently, the only rules in place had to do with signature requirements that Nader knows about only too well.

Obama came under scrutiny because in American History no other candidate’s grandmother ever said that she was at the candidates birth in a foreign country.

Jay: No Peadawg, it was not the supporters of Hillary in the primary. / It was the conservative movement, period.

It occurs to me, Jay, that no one has pointed out the simple fact that there is simple proof of the purely partisan nature of the birther hysteria.

And that is that were there a single shred of legitimacy to it, if there was the slightest reason to think that it doesn’t issue from the deepest recesses of paranoid delusion, there would be at least a handful of Democrats who would joint there Republican counterparts in supporting the claims of the doubters of Obama’s legitimacy. Just as there are plenty of Democrats who join in with Republicans over various other issues, for example accepting that the deficit and debt are urgent matters, if there were anything to this we would see at least one or two Democrats join the birthers in asking questions. Don’t you think?

This in my mind PROVES the purely delusional nature of the phenomenon.

Tax breaks are lifting profits

But I’d argue that a boost to earnings from taxes isn’t as valuable to investors as an increase in operating profit. The boost from taxes is dependent on the hard work of lobbyists and the vagaries of Washington politics — and to the ups and downs of the business cycle. (Taxes go down when companies apply the losses from a recession to the profits made during the early part of a recovery.)

Idiocy, pure and simple. And furthermore, it shows that you don’t understand the nature of slander and accusation.

If someone walks up to you on the street and says they suspect that you beat your wife (or, say, your children) but that they’ll consider thinking otherwise if only you supply them some kind of proof, what is the rational thing to do? In one sense, there’s no way out of the dilemma because the slightest gesture to accommodate the threat (which amounts to extortion) will merely fuel additional demands. That’s simply the logic that human communication follows. The only somewhat desirable way out is to simply refuse the extortion from the get-go by telling the person making the demands to take a hike or ignoring them. What do you not get about that?

First, it was Hillary supporters who began this issue. Politico had a very good article on this just a couple of days ago. Next, it was a 9/11 “truther” who extended this issue. THEN and only then, did some in the GOP take up this nonsense.

But some culpability should be heaped on Hope & Change ™ for allowing this farce to expand as well. A simple release of the document in question years ago would have shut down 95% of the jerks out there. He was just as bad as a 6-year old who doesn’t stop poking someone when they tell him to stop.

And he chose to ignore those requests, thereby exacerbating the issue even further.

And had I been his advisor/speechwriter, he would still ignore those requests followed by the short but poignant phrase, “Kiss my naturally Black ass!” As I’ve said before, nobody that high up in government is going to take office without being thoroughly vetted for security clearances. If there was an issue with his citizenship, that would have came out before he laid his hand on the Bible and took the Oath of Office. I had classmates who couldn’t clear background checks and were booted from the academy before we were sworn in, and my clearance level is nowhere near the POTUS. By the time they finished my investigation, they probably knew more about me than I did.

It’s pitiful. Just pitiful. Do they actually expect people to believe such nonsense? Unbelievable.

Then again, given that so many were willing to believe the birther craziness in the first place, it’s not too far-fetched to believe they’ll buy this too.
++++
The main cause of the birther issue is that each side will believe anything negative against the other side. Look at the percentage of people who believe Bush had prior knowledge of the 911 attacks among Democrats. The big difference between the two is Obama could have easily have disproved this along time ago. Obama’s mother was American and any looking into the facts would seem to suggest that in all likely hood he was born in the United States. There was never any evidence that he was born outside of the United States other than his father was not American and his upbringing seem to be rather unclear because of his family situation.

I have been amazed how Democrats were willing to believe Bush would let the 911 attacks occur and Republicans would believe this malarky.

Did you have to release your birth certificate and SS card to the American public? He showed his documents to whomever needed to vet them. He’s not required to release those documents to the American public. I showed a certified copy of my birth certificate when I applied for my government job that was not the long form. The people doing my security clearance investigation accepted that same certified copy without reservation. If I go back to Alabama and request a copy of my birth certificate, they will issue me a copy of that same form again.

It’s not about credentialing. One can not just get elected into a top secret “need to know” security level. The government takes security clearances very seriously. Look at the stuff they put out for government workers after the wikileaks stuff. By law, I’m still not allowed to look at the stuff that was put out into public domain because I don’t have the security clearance to view that info. Unless it’s declassified, I can face serious consequences for reading information that is now public knowledge.

Dave: His releasing it now shows that it was, is, and always would have been a political issue.

Of course it’s a political issue. One that should have been squelched when he released the official Hawaii document. He released the long form, and people are still b*tching about it saying its fake and stuff. It will be a political issue until he leaves the White House on his final flight home. I have to disagree with your last paragraph. I don’t think Obama should have released anything beyond the first certificate. That is the legally recognized version that Hawaii issues to everyone. If that’s not proof enough for him, then it’s not proof enough for any citizen born in Hawaii. Are we now going to request the long form for every candidate from Hawaii?
++
You are correct but I believe for a President who talks about transparency that would not have been a good idea. Obama was within his right not to release it but voters are within their right to vote for him or against him for whatever reason they deem appropriate. I believe he made the right call but he should have done it earlier. However, I can’t fault him much in this situation. The fault must lie with the Republicans. Once again…I’ve never questioned Obama’s citizenship, but given his propensity to embellish (resume?) it’s understandable that some might believe his resume wasn’t the only thing he used to mislead.

Like I said, I’m a fan. His famous keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention moved me to tears. The Democrats – not to mention America – need a mixed-race spokesperson who can connect to both urban blacks and rural whites, who has the credibility to challenge the status quo on issues ranging from misogynistic rap to unfair school funding.

And yet I’m disappointed. Barack’s story may be true, but many of the facts are not. His larger narrative purpose requires him to embellish his role. I don’t buy it. Just as I can’t be inspired by Steve Jobs now that I know how dishonest he is, I can’t listen uncritically to Barack Obama now that I know he’s willing to bend the facts to his purpose.

If the Birthers like conspiricies so much, why haven’t they tried to uncover the Right Wing conspiricy that allowed Obama to become president in the 1st place?

Why didn’t Bush and Cheney do something about Obama when they had the chance?

Why did they allow John McCain to pick such an obviously weak running mate?

Why didn’t the Karl Rove machine switch into high gear when victory seemed inevitable?

Why was Obama given a free pass to slide through the required seurity clearence that ALL Presidents must pass?

Come on Birthers, I’m waiting!!!!

“Or a citizen of the United States…Explain this, please”

It is qualified by the phrase following: “at the time of the adoption of this Constitution” and it was put there so that the people living in the new USA could be elected, even though they were not born in the “USA” (because it didn’t exist when they were born)

That phrase actually qualifies both restrictions. Because you can’t be a “natural born” citizen until AFTER the Constitution was adopted.

It is that qualification that prevents naturalized citizens like Arnold Schwarzenegger from being eligible to run for President.

If a Democrat or someone to the Left of Obama makes an issue about his citizenship, that’s not birtherism. It might be political opportunism, but it’s not birtherism.

You have birtherism the moment you become intolerably irritated at some perceived alien quality or otherness in Barack Obama, which finds expression in the demand for proof of citizenship (which can’t actually be provided; even presence at his birth would have been insufficient, since if Obama is truly Other, then he might even possess supernatural powers and thus might have even created a whole fake world, with hospitals and doctors to boot, to fool his victims).

Poison pen, if Matthews really did call for the release of the extra birth documents, it was out of irritation and a desire to see an end put to the matter, not birtherism (see above).

http://pumasunleashed.wordpress.com/2011/04/28/obama%E2%80%99s-birth-certificate-proves-americans-are-powerless/

Our government and Fourth Estate failed America in this case. We, the people of the United States, had a right to resolution on this crucial issue, but no one did anything about it. In the end, the White House only relented because the administration knew it could cost votes and a much more expensive 2012 presidential run for Mr. Obama.
Money, not democracy was the currency that brought this issue to a final resolution.

As for oil big oil does not set the prices- OPEC does. And for the cost and inflation regarding oil you are incorrect the president does in fact bare a great deal of responsibility. We purchase oil in dollar denominations. With the vast amount of money printing and the ever worsening debt crisis our dollar becomes weaker and weaker and thus oil becomes more and more expensive when bought in weaker and weaker denominated U.S. dollars. This money printing and excessive debt accumulation in 2 1/2 years very squarely falls on Obama’s head.

He is directly responsible for it. And the fact that the Saudis flat out ignored his plea to pump more oil and instead cut production shows you that world’s leaders do not fear the U.S. and absolutely do not respect us with this weakling in the oval office.

No other major media or political figure has been willing to take on such attacks in the direct and aggressive manner as has Donald Trump. And while JournOlist Ben Smith of Politico, and left-leaning websites such as The Smoking Gun, attempt to attack Trump for raising the Birther question, Trump refuses to let the issue alone – pushing it even further into the open and demanding President Obama simply produce his actual birth certificate….”

Are you guys ever going to swallow the fact that the previous administration kept the wars off the books? Obama put them on the books, to his detriment because that extra trillion makes it seem like his. Don’t forget medicare part d and then tarp, I’ll meet you half way on tarp, OK? The dollar has been this low before in 08, but we survived it. If we get our fiscal house in order with proper tax rates and cutting, the dollar will stabilize. When this oil binge started the saudi’s pledged to ramp it up to cover libya, they are pulling back probably because they foresee a glut, nothing to do with obama. The saudi’s have always been pragmatic about oil pricing. They know that if it gets too high then the whole world economy will be wrecked, to that end, how does it benefit them or anybody?

“what is his plan for reducing the deficit”

From what I’ve read he has a committee working on that, and from what I’ve heard he plans to let the Bush taxes expire and cut spending.

What? So now the conflict in Syria is somehow top front of what’s most important to you? Can you slow down on your poutrages just a bit? We have wingnuts on here whining that he’s gotten us into three wars and now you want a fourth? Only then to see people whine about it?

What is his plan for Libya?

“What is his plan for reducing our dependance on foriegn oil other than keeping our tires inflated”

Well, we now have increased domestic oil production than in previous years, and there is increase federal funding for nuclear power and other alternatives such as natural gas and clean coal (which I think is bullshyte — there is no such thing as clean coal).

In this past week, I have written about an evolution of ideas. The Civil Rights Movement, Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, and Same-Sex Marriage were examples of ideas that moved more progressive as humankind evolved.

Now, there is an evolution of what entails a strong leader. Some do not yet understand that being strong does not mean being a bully. Donald Trump is seen as being strong by some, but he is seen as being limited by others.

Martin Luther King, Jr., though praised by most today, was maligned when he was alive, just as Obama is being maligned today. Obama has an evolved consciousness that many do not yet understand, but he is leading us toward seeing that we are all interconnected. His is not a mind that sees in simple win/lose dichotomies. Barack Obama is a strong leader. Some see that now. Many will see it later, as the world evolves in its understanding of what real strength entails.

I think there’s a degree of that, but it’s also important to remember that during the Clinton era the fantasies included such things as Hillary was a lesbian, the Clintons murdered Vince Foster, Clinton sold missile secrets to China for campaign money, Clinton raped someone, he was the father of a black child, he was involved in cocaine smuggling as Arkansas governor and no doubt more that the kindness of time has obliterated from my brain.

The birther craze was Obama’s fault

I agree. First they produce a short-form (crude forgery), claiming it’s the only one.
The new Gov of Hawaii said there’s no long form on file. Now this latest (crude forgery) mysteriously appears, guaranteed to be the Real McCoy. (NOT)

Here’s what wrong with it:
The term _African_ was not used in any state back in 1961 to label persons with negroid features.
The correct term (used in all english-speaking countries, is Negro.
trivia: Africa is a continent, not a race. There’s millions of African-born caucasians and Indians.

Also, in the space for _Country (of father’s birth) it has _Kenya, East Africa_.
Sorry, but there’s no such continent as “East Africa”.

Here, a Georgia dude, using Adobe Illustrator, uncovered 9 layers to this document. This is another cut-paste job.

If this issue was the other way around and a Republican president would not release his birth certificate the same outcome would have been likely, Dems demanding the birth certificate.

The difference here is that when your name is Barack Hussein Obama it seems like there might be a chance you aren’t an American.

Do you not agree that the name is what caused the initial questions? To me, if someone name Barack Hussein Obama is elected president of the US there is nothing wrong with wanting his birth certificate.

And the real question, why not just show it?? It’s like an older brother holding the ball so high to where the little brother just jumps and jumps but cant reach it.

Woodstock Mike — “If this issue was the other way around and a Republican president would not release his birth certificate the same outcome would have been likely, Dems demanding the birth certificate.”

I think it’s pretty disingenuous of you to claim what the your political opposition *would* do, when the issue is pretty clearly what your political compatriots *have* done. Way to take responsibility.

“The difference here is that when your name is Barack Hussein Obama it seems like there might be a chance you aren’t an American.”

Really? Why? Because he’s got a funny name? My forebears had funny Polish and Russian names. They gave funny Polish and Russian names to their kids, who were born here and were legally Americans. Did their names make them any *less* American?

“Do you not agree that the name is what caused the initial questions?”

Nope. I think it’s just a handy foil.

“To me, if someone name Barack Hussein Obama is elected president of the US there is nothing wrong with wanting his birth certificate.”

And if the Governor of the state in which he was born says ‘hey, I’ve seen the BC and it’s real, so move on,’ would that be enough for you, especially if the Governor was a Republican?

“And the real question, why not just show it??”

Because a sitting Governor said it was real and valid, and under the Full Faith and Credit Clause, all other states are legally bound to respect that. Why isn’t the word of a sitting Republican governor good enough for you? Why is President Obama subjected to a higher standard of proof than anyone else?

“It’s like an older brother holding the ball so high to where the little brother just jumps and jumps but cant reach it.”

I have no idea what you are saying here.

“If he was aware of the issue why not show it from the get go?? Seems ridiculous…”

It certainly does seem ridiculous that two years after Governor Lingle verified the document that y’all are still agitating for it.

What you ignore though Jay is that why is it every time someone of conservative origins appears on a talk show or talk radio this is a question that’s asked? Most Americans could care less. The attention should be solely focused on defeating Obama anyway. Every left wing pundit asks if they will denounce those that howl for a birth certificate. I ask will the democrat party denounce every loon that uses violence and violent rhetoric to try and get their point across. Code Pink, Unions, Black Panthers, Jeremiah Wright… I could go on and on… This is part of the democrat base….

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/27/obama-birth-certificate-r_n_854248.html
“And yet it was the press that played a large role in forcing the administration’s hand. CNN’s Ed Henry had pressed White House Press Secretary Jay Carney on the issue just one day earlier, despite the fact that his own network had done a thorough investigation debunking the claims of the conspiracy theorists.”

Funny that. The press debunked the claim. Obama scolds them.

Sounds like anyone asking Obama anything he doesn’t like gets scolded. I wonder if Ed Henry, Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper or George Stephanopolous are still sobbing on their desks for the harsh rebuke he gave them?

Because he’s so smart, so busy and getting so many things done, it was a distraction that had to be dealt with so we can all move on to deal with really important matters….like to Chicago to film the Oprah show.

From WH comm director Dan Pfeiffer:

“This issue was resolved in 2008. It has not been an issue,” White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said during a morning briefing in which he and other officials took care not to mention Trump’s name. “None of you have asked about it, called about it or reported on it until the last few weeks … [not releasing it] would probably be good for the president politically. ”

….”Not releasing it would be good?”

That can only mean that he acknowledges the disgracement and embarassment game being played by Jay and most editorialists everywhere, OR it means that the President is being effective if everyone is swallowing the crap he gives them hook, line and sinker.

Oh, the bizarre politics in the land where “spending” means “investing” and “cutting” means “right-wing racism” of Washington, land of fantasy, wonder and friendly little elves called the “media”–friendly if you’re a Democrat.

Since it was such a distraction, I’m sure Obama knows how much of a distraction. Might he tell us in terms of dollars spent?

Take Obamacare as an example, he brags about it, doesn’t know what is in it, it is so bad he has had to waived the law for more than a 1000 companies, and someone unknown to us wrote it. This is not an example of a mysterious but convincing leader, this is an example of the most expensive and destructive piece of legislation in the history of our country enacted by a comlete lack of any hint of leadership. The Obamacare law is a myriad of more than 2000 pages of ideas thrown together by a committee without a keader. The only hope this country has at this time is that a majority of us have figured out what a snake oil salesman Obama is. Another is the more he speaks the more his poll numbers drop because no matter what he says, his record will drown out his voice.

Plaintiff Philip J. Berg is a dumbass too. Neither Pres. Obama nor his mother lost their citizenship because she naturalized in Indonesia. The only way to lose US citizenship if you’re a citizen from birth, is to go to an Consulate on foreign soil and renounce your citizenship in the presence of officials who can verify that. Even the people who are joining the Taliban have not lost their US citizenship. Maybe if Philip J. Berg actually read the law on losing citizenship, all this birther crap could have been completely avoided in the first place.

Not withstanding the fact that the constitution clearly says you need to be a US citizen the bigger issue to me is that you are standing up for a hypocritical government in which the wealthy, who you seem to oppose in all other policies you follow, benefit from your current stance. You see in everyday life we, normal regular citizens have to produce our birth certificates in a variety of circumstances. We have to to show it to put our kids in rec ball, we have to show it to get passports, we have to show it to get a drivers license and it is one of only a few forms acceptible to vote.

The problem comes in when you libs argue that you shouldn’t show it to be THE PRESIDENT. I do believe that we have to agree that being president is a little more important than your kid playing baseball.

Mama Says: “You see in everyday life we, normal regular citizens have to produce our birth certificates in a variety of circumstances”

Obama did just that, Mama. He showed his birth certificate, and long ago. Only the crazies out there decided it wasn’t enough and said “show us more!” So he finally gave in and presented the extra documents (as they should be called).

So there shouldn’t be any problem, right?

Jay

See Mama, that’s where the problem arises.

Obama DID show us his birth certificate, the same official document issued by the state of Hawaii to everyone born there, with the raised seal and everything. He also used that same document to acquire a US passport, just like you and every other law-abiding citizen.

And yet, for him that is somehow not enough. For some reason, you and others demand something even more, something well beyond what the US government requires for passports and what the state of Hawaii issues those born there.

The fact that you’ve demanded something extra, something well beyond the norm — THAT’S why people start wondering about the real motivation here. And for good reason.

Our elected officicals should be from the U.S. right ?”

I don’t have a problem with that. The issue is that y’all didn’t ACCEPT that the state of his birth validated his birth certificate BEFORE the election. Under the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the US Constitution, each state is to accept the legal documents and proceedings of every other state as being as valid as their own. So since Hawaii said ‘it’s for real,’ that should have been the end of it.

That it *wasn’t* the end of it is not the President’s fault. If you want some stiffer standard, then I encourage you to lobby Congress to promulgate one. However, under the ex post facto prohibition in the Constitution, it won’t apply to President Obama — just to whoever comes later.

Come up with the standard FIRST. Then we can talk about how to apply it.

My point is that Obama nor any other federal officiall HAD to show proof of natural born citizenship PRIOR to getting on ballots.
The issue to me is not that Obama himself never proved citizenship but that he nor anyone else HAD to prove it PRIOR TO getting on any ballot.

If it was a requirement to prove natural citizenship we would not see states trying to make it law now. I mean reason stands that if it is not law in Georgia, Iowa or Arizonia they would not be trying to make it law now, right ?

I just learned that this is not being done and I am saying that it should be. Obama has now proven that so it is over as far as he is concerned but the ISSUE itself still needs to be fixed.

The fact that the birthers are engaging in a type of collective psychosis (whether or not they’re personally psychotics or not) is beyond debate. It’s a fact. And I believe the same about the “truthers” for the record.

So responsible people of any political persuasion should stand up and call this what it is. Doing so does not – or should not – be tantamount to being a “liberal”. And if it is, then we’re in the psychosis too and god help us.

Why can’t we just pass a federal law, that states that in order for any person to hold any elected federal office which is assigned, appointed or obtained by the electorial process they must first show proof of U.S natural birth via a “long form certificate of birth” ?

This would ensure that different states could not apply different standards to a canidate and that we all know they are eligible per the constitution.

This could be adopted after the next national election (fro 2014 congressional cycle) so it prevents the impression that we are tryingt o keep Obama off the ballot

Mama…its very clear that many states NO longer issue the long form. HI does not. Obama got a special waiver from the state. The certificate of live birth is the legal form and is sufficient. It is a certification from the state of birth in that state.

Unless HI changed its law (or one of the other states that issue only the short form), a GA requirement to show the “long form” would not be something a person from Hawaii could fulfil.

Moreover as we have already seen, even producing the “long form” does not resolve the issue for the birthers. Let’s remember there are still those that believe Armstrong did not walk on the moon.

Trying to fix crazy does not typically lead to good law-making.

Why? To justify your paranoia? Justifying paranoia is an insufficient reason to pass a law.

The Constitution already says that the contracts and documents of one state are valid in all states. The state of Hawaii had already certified that the previous birth certificate it had previously issued to Obama was official and valid, which is why the US government accepted it for purposes of issuing a passport.

Constitutionally, that was all that needed to be said and done.

About Hillary supporters being the first to suggest a birthplace contoversy:

Indeed, the rumor that Obama was not a U.S. citizen was initially spread in April 2008 by a group of Hillary Clinton supporters, as reported April 22 by Politico’s Ben Smith and Byron Tau:

If you haven’t been trolling the fever swamps of online conspiracy sites or opening those emails from Uncle Larry, you may well wonder: Where did this idea come from? Who started it? And is there a grain of truth there?

The answer lies in Democratic, not Republican politics, and in the bitter, exhausting spring of 2008.
….

Then, as Obama marched toward the presidency, a new suggestion emerged: That he was not eligible to serve.

That theory first emerged in the spring of 2008, as Clinton supporters circulated an anonymous email questioning Obama’s citizenship.

“Barack Obama’s mother was living in Kenya with his Arab-African father late in her pregnancy. She was not allowed to travel by plane then, so Barack Obama was born there and his mother then took him to Hawaii to register his birth,” asserted one chain email that surfaced on the urban legend site Snopes.com in April 2008.

Frankly I don’t care where the guy was born at this point, as he is going to be gone 1/20/2013. Furthermore, I don’t care to know his grades either. It would however be informative to read his writings to better understand what drives his agenda. I think we can make an educated guess what lurks in those records given his associates and his actions undertaken to keep them sealed.

Your side is stuck on racist nuts–the blinders forbid you to see the more far reaching arguments

Again, I don’t know what “side” you’re talking about. There is only one side here, and that’s the side which accepts that there is a real world out there that we can talk about, one in which a truth claim can be grounded in some reference to a non-delusional reality. In other words, it has to be possible to close an argument and settle a dispute through the appeal to symbolic authority (embodied in institutions and its official representatives, including documentation). By being a “birther” one rejects that reality.

then I can apply the same logic of inclusion for those who don’t see a need to ensure natural born citizenship

The two examples have nothing in common.

“Ensuring” natural born citizenship simply hasn’t been a problem in the past, or at least not so much that we’ve felt a need to institute more rigorous provisions of verification. Though that might change. Up to now I think it’s been felt that the other “vetting” processes are adequate.

May I presume that you are a “limited government” conservative? And yet you advocate having the federal government dictate the form that birth certificates would take?

Well, while we’re at it, let’s take it a step farther. Obama is SUPPOSEDLY the child of Stanley Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr. But we don’t know that for sure, now do we? He could have been switched at birth or even later for all we know.

I think to make sure, we need to do a DNA test and dig up both his mother and father. I think we need to do that with all of our presidential candidates, just to make sure they are who they say they are.

Jay you are the one who posted the topic so you cannot thenm turn around and and complain that the birthers are the ones keeping this going. To your larger point I do believe the government is way to big and I am ensured by the fact that every two weeks I see what they take from me. Now if by that you are saying that I am for complete disolution of the government you are wrong. I see the larger issue of birth certificates and birth location as a government duty to ensure that those elected have our (yours too) interest at heart.

I don’t need Obama to prove citizenship b/c he is African American I need it to ensure that ANYONE is a natural citizen. You have no problem with federal mandates on medical insurance why can’t you support a uniform standard to a national issue ? If this argument was about individual state politics you would both have a point but 50 different standards for a NATIONAL election is simply stupid.

I mean come on you do see a reason to have one standard to get a Georgia drivers license right ? or do you want 159 individual standards. I mean if you are comfortable with different standards why do you see the need for federal law at all ?

Left Wing—–come on you keep insisting that these birther issue and national standards are different. With Obama the point is done but as I will say once again—–all national canidates should meet a national for office PRIOR to being on the ballot. Why is that so hard ? I mean wouldn’t that prevent us racist rednecks from putting our own standards on things ? and would it have made this entire Obama birther argument moot ?
