No circumstance to circumscribe the circumcised
The political quirks of San Francisco have made it a favorite target of conservatives, but I’ve never been tempted to join in the sport. I mean, sure, the folks in Baghdad by the Bay can be a little out there at times, but if you don’t like it, you don’t have to move there, right?
It’s still a great city to visit, and if fate dictated that I had to live the rest of my days looking out over Fisherman’s Wharf and the Golden Gate Bridge, I guess I could probably live with that.
“Will a circumcision ban in San Francisco make, um, the final cut and appear before voters this November?
Proponents of the ban took 12,265 signatures to the Department of Elections today and should learn within a month whether 7,168 of them indeed came from registered city voters. If so, the city will have another one of its classic only-in-San Francisco measures to debate.
Wearing pins reading “May the foreskin be with you,” the backers of the ban gathered at City Hall to turn in their signatures. Then they told reporters more than anybody ever wanted to know about the increasingly controversial procedure….
The ban would outlaw circumcision in the city on any male under 18 years old – even for religious reasons. Breaking the law would count as a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and jail time for up to a year. Opponents say the ballot measure would never stand up in court because it violates the freedom of religion clause of the U.S. Constitution.”

Actually, I believe it is a valid health concern, having that foreskin can result in bacterial infections especially if your not clean. Besides, I’ve heard that women are grossed out by foreskinned penises..

When I worked at a smalltown paper, AmVet, our calendar/events guy was an older fellow, very buttoned down and prim. So one day the editor goes to him and informs him that we can no longer run calendar listings for a local band calling themselves Smegma.
Calendar Guy says why.

Thulsa, I believe the reasoning is the same…nobody else should make decisions about your body, and presumably infants aren’t consulted about their circumcision. “Goo-goo” would probably not be accepted as informed consent.

Any of you Biblical scholars out there have any comments on the religious significance of this? Note that the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas, considered representative of the gnostic movement, takes a negative view of circumcision:
His disciples said to him, “Is circumcision useful or not?” He said to them, “If it were useful, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect.”
So, considering that this is San Francisco, liberal bastion and arguably the ground zero of the world progressive New Age/Gnostic trends, it’s not surprising that this would first bubble to the surface there. Am I on the right track here?
