Petraeus to lead CIA; Panetta moves to Pentagon

Leon Panetta, a longtime congressman, former chief of staff to President Clinton and now director of the CIA, will be nominated to replace Robert Gates as secretary of defense, according to the Associated Press.

Gen. David Petraeus, now leading the NATO effort in Afghanistan, will reportedly replace Panetta at the CIA. That’s an interesting move on several counts, confirming that Petraeus intends to follow the Colin Powell/George Marshall model and be a major policy player in Washington for years to come, while staying clear of electoral politics.

The low-key Gates, initially appointed by President Bush to replace the discredited and more flamboyant Donald Rumsfeld, has been the right man in the right place for a long time now. Nobody’s irreplaceable, and Panetta brings his own strengths and credentials to the job. But it’s hard to conceive of someone doing a better job than Gates did during a particularly challenging time in the Pentagon.

Right man at the right time, made the tough calls (Middle East, fired the AF Chief of Staff and Sec of AF, pushed drones as a mainstay in our inventory, initiated Def cuts, moved to whack away at the huge Pentagon bureaucracy) and he had a good knowledge of what was on in the world from his time as CIA director.

Panetta’s from CIA, let’s hope he meets the bar where Gates placed it.

“I too thought that “unknowns” riff was one of Rummy’s better moments.”

That riff is straight out of the coursework for senior officer professional education. Rumsfeld gave it nearly verbatim. It’s taught as a means of introducing caution into the operational planning process (in other words ‘you don’t know everything about the enemy you’d like to think you know and you’d better understand there’s a whole lot you don’t know… if you don’t understand that, you could lose).

It was a joke to put a political hack and someone without any military experience into the job of CIA director in the first place. To further the idea of putting Panetta into the job of Sec. of Def. is another example of liberal disconnect. In these times of terrorism against an uncivilized, but clever Islamic enemy, we don’t need political hacks running our security apparatus. The CIA will gain in operational strength with this proposed move, but the DOD will become a rubber stamp for an inept community organizer trying to figure out foreign policy. Just look at the Libyian mess. Just look back at the Iranian hostage rescue failure of the Carter administration. I would have to think that all of the liberals who blog this site and all of the liberals who voted for their Hope & Change president would agree with me. on and off topic. this covers gates, the budget deficit, and is good news for Savannah (re Gulfstream)

General Dynamics Net Rises 3.5% on Gulfstream Unit Profits (1)

By Gopal Ratnam

April 27 (Bloomberg) — General Dynamics Corp., the maker of Abrams battle tanks and Gulfstream jets, said first-quarter profit rose 3.5 percent aided by higher margins at the business- jet unit.

Net income increased to $618 million, or $1.64 a share, from $597 million, or $1.53 a share, a year earlier, the Falls Church, Virginia-based company said today in a statement. The average of 20 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg was for $1.61 a share. Sales gained less than 1 percent to $7.8 billion.

General Dynamics’s defense business was dealt a setback after Defense Secretary Robert Gates proposed in January to cancel the company’s Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle it was building for the Marine Corps. The loss may be offset with Gates’s proposal to upgrade Abrams tanks and the Army’s Stryker vehicles, both made by the company.

With U.S. defense spending coming under pressure Chief Executive Officer Jay Johnson has said the Gulfstream unit will remain the company’s “growth engine.”

General Dynamics, which also makes Virginia-class nuclear submarines, in January forecast full-year profit of $7 to $7.10 a share. Analysts’ average estimate is for profit of $7.12 a share on sales of $33.8 billion.

General Dynamics gained 50 cents to $72.64 yesterday in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares gained 2.4 percent this year before today. The Standard and Poor’s Supercomposite Aerospace & Defense Index has gained 10.3 percent in the same period.

While at Indiana University, Gates was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency and joined the agency in 1966.[15] On January 4, 1967, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force.[14][15] From 1967 to 1969, he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command as an intelligence officer which included a stint at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, where he delivered intelligence briefings to Intercontinental Ballistic Missile crews.[16] After fulfilling his military obligation, he rejoined the CIA.

Gates left the CIA in 1974 to serve on the staff of the National Security Council. He returned to the CIA in late 1979, serving briefly as the director of the Strategic Evaluation Center, Office of Strategic Research. He was named the Director of the DCI/DDCI Executive Staff in 1981, Deputy Director for Intelligence in 1982, and Deputy Director of Central Intelligence from April 18, 1986 to March 20, 1989.

Simple math. Subtract the amount of subsidies for the entire industry from their profit total. If it’s a positive number, subsidies are not doing jack sh*t other than boosting the bottom line. If I give you a $2 Billion subsidy and your profit is around $500 million, then the subsidy is probably helping you keep from going under. However, if your subsidy is $4 Billion, and you profit in the ballpark of $8 Billion, odds are that you could have profitted $4 Billion without my help in the first place.

If it increased domestic production and backed out imports, then the overall costs to society have to be taken into account in order to judge whether it is a good taxpayer investment.”

We owe Trump a round of attaboys. He outsmarted Obama and got this off the table well in advance of the 2012 sideshow. Now it’s on to those pesky college records and writings.

UGA, the embarassment should be because there was never any real reason to doubt his birth and overwhelming evidence that he WAS born in Hawaii. The birthers were actually paranoid enought to think that somehow someone knew he would one day be president and had his birth falsely announced in a newspaper. That he somehow had the officials in Hawaii lying about factual information and that no one would find out about. They wanted us to believe that is was unusual that people who deliver babies every day did not specifically recall his birth. Sheesh the whole dam thing was moronic like most conspiracy theories because they ask you to believe a totally implausible theory as an explanation for some minor observation. So, you tell me……. why was this ever even an issue???? Name one presidential candidate who has EVER been asked to produce his long form BC other than Obama. Why was Obama held to a different standard?

It’s great for trump. He forced Obama’s hand.

Liberals should be wetting themselves (more than usual) Trump gets things done. He forced Obama to do what no one else has done. Let’s see if he can force him to pack his bags and get out of our White House.

If he was able to cause this kind of trouble just over the birth certificate, wait until he goes after his policies.

Better strap yourself in, libs. This is going to be a rough ride.

The Obama plan to reduce gasoline prices: 1)Increase taxes on oil companies. 2)Appoint a committee of liberal friends to blame anyone other than him for the increases. 3) Coninue and expand the moratoriam on all drilling in this country. 4) Give Brazil money to drill in the gulf of mexico. 5) There is no silver bullett.

Stupid Lib Tricks #1 – Let’s model ourselves after the Eurotrash. After all they’re doing so well…like Greece and Ireland and Spain, etc. I have a better idea; if you like the social democracies so much why don’t you all do like USINUK and just move there and make room for more Mexicans here!

He actually found another white hating preacher to take his kids to on Easter. Protective child services should take those kids before they become the racist that their Dad obviously is.

Stupid Lib Tricks #2 – Those evil corporations are getting handouts, tax breaks, incentives and making obscene profits while paying no taxes. A corporation is just a group of people, employees and stockholders with a legal charter. The stockholders participate in the obscene profits or the corporation retains them, often for use in expanding the business, thereby creating more jobs and stimulating the economy, you know, like Obama did with the stimulus handouts for government employees.
