Travelin’ to Graceland, Graceland, Graceland Tennessee

Once they’ve made a name and career for themselves, novelists, musicians, actors, painters and other creatives face a common challenge: Now what? Do you keep doing what you’ve done, what made you famous, or do you bust out of that niche and try something fresh and new?

Twenty-five years ago, a semi-washed-up pop star by the name of Paul Simon decided to try to something new, infusing his work with exotic influences from South Africa and Louisiana and Mexico. In “Graceland,” Simon produced one of those rare albums in which musicianship and creativity were rewarded with popularity. It was a fresh work of art by a mature professional, plus it made your feet twitch and your heart jump.

In its Silver Anniversary year, here’s the title cut:

Paul Simon made that album with backup from a group of black South African musicians. Not long afterward he was at a black college and the students were accusing him of racism because he was white and “Stevie Wonder could have done it”. As he defended himself from these attacks, the students gave him looks of pure hatred. Only in America!!!

At least it’s not the dreaded “elk” card. You know, all with the “crosshairs” and all that. And when you think about it, everyone is a member of an “ilk” aren’t they? Oh well, I am waxing poetic and to do so is nothing but jumping into a “intellectual” maelstrom (as we humans are apt to do). It is proven here everyday and it is a proven/sure-fire way to wile away your valuable hours on this earth on nothing that will ever change anything or make any difference in your life. But we humans are really just moths that are drawn to the flame, aren’t we? Otherwise the media wouldn’t have jobs.

Besides, there ain’t no Simon without Garfunkle. Simon’s music stank after their duo broke up. A white Jewish dude from NYC ain’t never going to be black but boy did he try!

Killer Combo of High Gas, Food Prices at Key Tipping Point

The combination of rising gasoline prices and the steepest increase in the cost of food in a generation is threatening to push the US economy into a recession, according to Craig Johnson, president of Customer Growth Partners.

Johnson looks at the percentage of income consumers are spending on gasoline and food as a way of gauging how consumers will fare when energy prices spike.

With gas prices now standing at about $3.90 a gallon, energy costs have now passed 6 percent of spending—a level that Johnson says is a “tipping point” for consumers.

If you can spare the time, listen to this song 4 times – first for the whole song, second for the words, third for the guitar, and fourth, to the whole thing.

Maybe a true American song to rival a Beatles song!
Ohh, wait, the Beatles did Buddy’s song too! – and they didn’t change much in the arrangement.

Earth Day Ends Obama’s 53,300 Gallon Trip

President Obama declared today’s 41st annual Earth Day proof of America’s ecological and conservation spirit—then completed a three-day campaign-style trip logging 10,666 miles on Air Force One, eating up some 53,300 gallons at a cost of about $180,000. And that doesn’t include the fuel consumption of his helicopter, limo, or the 29 other vehicles that travel with that car.

Poll: Most Americans oppose raising debt limit

Despite Obama administration warnings that failing to do so would devastate the economy, a clear majority of Americans say they oppose raising the debt limit, a new CBS News/New York Times poll shows.

Just 27 percent of Americans support raising the debt limit, while 63 percent oppose raising it.

Go Donald Go :

I don’t know what your military background is my friend but I fear you have much to learn.

1) If that tank tread ain’t replaced quickly that tank doesn’t move and your a** ain’t covered.
2) If that soldier next to you is not strong enough to pick you up with all your gear (and his) and get you out of the line of fire your a** ain’t covered.
3) If that co-pilot shot down with you is not strong enough to slit a throat so your hiding position won’t be given away your a** ain’t covered.
I think you get the picture.

90% of war is supply, support and administration. 10% is infantry combat. Of that last 10% ……….. 80 to 90% of it involves shooting at someone. The remaining small percentage involves vicious hand to hand combat you probably can’t even imagine and a place where women are not qualified.

Remember, the “hand to hand” combat training at a military base (not so rough as to actually get someone hurt) is totally differrent from that with a crazed enemy combatant fightiing for his life.

If a female soldier has to shoot her rilfe at the enemy from an ambushed truck convoy bringing a beer supply to the front line troops, that’s the military’s fault for putting her there in that situation.

The combat arms designations are no place for women. That kind of political correctness just gets good people killed.

Notice why there are no women playing in the NFL? Isn’t that a little discriminatory?

(P.S. Start about the 2 min. mark and let’s get a female in there for this knife fight)

What, pray tell, have conservative–out of power for several years now (and even the Republican House has essentially no power at this stage to push an agenda)–done to impact gas prices?

Today’s higher gas prices are a result of:

* QE2 (weaker dollar)
* recovery from the recession increasing demand world wide

Southern Comfort (aka The Man) :

Unlike some others on here, thanks for your reasoned response.

A couple of problems I see:

1) As to your first point you are correct. There are a few women (a genetic test may be in order) out there who could possibly have won that knife fight. I’m thinking of some of these female wrestlers, body builders, I think they are starting Women’s Olympic wrestling now, etc., etc.

However, what happens is because of those very, very, very, few (who probably want nothing to do with the military anyway) you open up a door to women who are flat not qualified. They may look it, talk it, and practice it in little war games on base ……………… but not the real deal.

Again, I challenge you to find me the best female linebacker in the United States and let’s see if she can play in the NFL.

2) As to the video, police work is NOT combat. Now before you or anyone else get all worked up …………. I have done both. Here’s the difference.

A) In police work you do not kill “to kill”. You may use only the restraint or force necessary to complete the arrest or stop the unlawful action. More and you get sued, fired and/or prosecuted.

It goes like this and the decision usually has to be made in seconds:

Presence
Verbal Command
Soft Hands
Hard Hands
Chemical Weapons
Taser Weapons
Impact Weapons
Deadly Force

And you NEVER say on the witness stand that you shot to “kill” the bank robber. No ……… you say you “shot to rendered the individual incapable of continuing the action which prompted you to shoot.”

Bottom line: There are a lot of men who do not belong in the military combat arms and you usually only find out when it’s too late and lives are lost. Adding women to that equation would be a disaster.

I see your point. However, I’m also aware that the human mind is capable of pushing our bodies beyond what we think we’re capable of doing. Adrenaline, for one, doesn’t discriminate between male and female bodies, and you always find stories of people doing unimaginable things while hopped up on it. Years ago, I probably would have agreed with you. Now, I think it’s more dependent upon the individual person as opposed to the sex. There are many men who probably couldn’t handle combat and/or police work.

ONE: ‘You shall have no other gods before Me.’

TWO: ‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image–any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.’

THREE: ‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.’

FOUR: ‘Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.’

FIVE: ‘Honor your father and your mother.’

SIX: ‘You shall not murder.’

SEVEN: ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

EIGHT: ‘You shall not steal.’

NINE: ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.’

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:36-40).

A reflective reading of Christ’s teaching reveals that the first four commandments given to the children of Israel are contained in the statement: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” It continues that the last six commandments are enclosed in the statement: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

G’morning all, and a Happy Easter Sunday to all observing this holiday.

Kinda been scratching my head over the posturing the GOP has been doing over the debt limit. I wonder if they realize that they’ve already painted themselves into a corner. I came across a link to a LA Times blog that had the following:

The fiscal 2012 budget resolution proposed by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) drew the support of all 235 Republicans present and voting Friday, as well as the opposition from all 193 Democrats in attendance. That means 235 members of the House GOP are now on record in favor of slowing the growth of domestic discretionary spending and Medicaid, shrinking the deficit gradually through fiscal 2015, and sharply reducing federal spending as a percentage of the economy over the long term.

They’re also on record favoring an increase in the debt ceiling, which currently stands at $14.3 trillion.

Pages 5 and 6 of the budget resolution declare that the “appropriate levels of debt” subject to the debt ceiling are as follows:

Fiscal year 2012: $16,204,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2013: $17,177,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2014: $17,955,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2015: $18,704,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2016: $19,513,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2017: $20,257,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2018: $20,981,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2019: $21,711,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2020: $22,416,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2021: $23,105,000,000,000.

Being my curious self, I didn’t take their word for it, and I went to look it up for myself. I found a copy of the Ryan budget proposal and looked at pages 5&6 like they said. Wondering what it says??

According to the Ryan proposal:

1 TITLE I—RECOMMENDED
2 LEVELS AND AMOUNTS
3 SEC. 101. RECOMMENDED LEVELS AND AMOUNTS.
4 The following budgetary levels are appropriate for
5 each of fiscal years 2012 through 2021:

[...]

9 (4) DEFICITS (ON-BUDGET).—For purposes of
10 the enforcement of this resolution, the amounts of
11 the deficits (on-budget) are as follows:
12 Fiscal year 2012: $1,081,463,000,000.
13 Fiscal year 2013: $787,899,000,000.
14 Fiscal year 2014: $581,261,000,000.
15 Fiscal year 2015: $527,165,000,000.
16 Fiscal year 2016: $577,014,000,000.
17 Fiscal year 2017: $501,418,000,000.
18 Fiscal year 2018: $464,036,000,000.
19 Fiscal year 2019: $490,469,000,000.
20 Fiscal year 2020: $464,392,000,000.
21 Fiscal year 2021: $433,912,000,000.
22 (5) DEBT SUBJECT TO LIMIT.—Pursuant to
23 section 301(a)(5) of the Congressional Budget Act
24 of 1974, the appropriate levels of the public debt are
25 as follows:

•HCON 34 RH
1 Fiscal year 2012: $16,204,000,000,000.
2 Fiscal year 2013: $17,177,000,000,000.
3 Fiscal year 2014: $17,955,000,000,000.
4 Fiscal year 2015: $18,704,000,000,000.
5 Fiscal year 2016: $19,513,000,000,000.
6 Fiscal year 2017: $20,257,000,000,000.
7 Fiscal year 2018: $20,981,000,000,000.
8 Fiscal year 2019: $21,711,000,000,000.
9 Fiscal year 2020: $22,416,000,000,000.
10 Fiscal year 2021: $23,105,000,000,000.

Seems like the House GOP has already said that our debt limit will eventually end up at least around $23 Trillion within the next 10 years, so why play games and risk our economy with their hardball tactics? I can not grasp the logic with playing such a dangerous game of chicken with our future. We all know that there’s gotta be change in the way we’re running our budgets, but don’t risk throwing the entire globe into a depression to gain ideological ground. That’s pure jackassery.

Just look at the misery that has happened to America since the Democrats took over Congress in 2007 and especially the horrible shape the economy has sunk to since the clown-in-chief took over. So what is just a big stack of lies to the uneducated, indoctrinated, blind liberals?

Stop repeating the garbage you hear from Salon.com and take a look around. Look at our economy. Look at the unemployment rate. Look at the cost of gas and the cost of food. For your enlightenment…

Origins of the name “Easter”:
The name “Easter” originated with the names of an ancient Goddess and God. The Venerable Bede, (672-735 CE.) a Christian scholar, first asserted in his book De Ratione Temporum that Easter was named after Eostre (a.k.a. Eastre). She was the Great Mother Goddess of the Saxon people in Northern Europe. Similarly, the “Teutonic dawn goddess of fertility [was] known variously as Ostare, Ostara, Ostern, Eostra, Eostre, Eostur, Eastra, Eastur, Austron and Ausos.” 1 Her name was derived from the ancient word for spring: “eastre.” Similar Goddesses were known by other names in ancient cultures around the Mediterranean, and were celebrated in the springtime. Some were:

Aphrodite from ancient Cyprus
Ashtoreth from ancient Israel
Astarte from ancient Greece
Demeter from Mycenae
Hathor from ancient Egypt
Ishtar from Assyria
Kali, from India
Ostara a Norse Goddess of fertility.

An alternative explanation has been suggested. The name given by the Frankish church to Jesus’ resurrection festival included the Latin word “alba” which means “white.” (This was a reference to the white robes that were worn during the festival.) “Alba” also has a second meaning: “sunrise.” When the name of the festival was translated into German, the “sunrise” meaning was selected in error. This became “ostern” in German. Ostern has been proposed as the origin of the word “Easter”. 2

There are two popular beliefs about the origin of the English word “Sunday.” It is derived from the name of the Scandinavian sun Goddess Sunna (a.k.a. Sunne, Frau Sonne). 5,6
It is derived from “Sol,” the Roman God of the Sun.” Their phrase “Dies Solis” means “day of the Sun.” The Christian saint Jerome (d. 420) commented “If it is called the day of the sun by the pagans, we willingly accept this name, for on this day the Light of the world arose, on this day the Sun of Justice shone forth.” 7

Sponsored link:

Pagan origins of Easter:
Many, perhaps most, Pagan religions in the Mediterranean area had a major seasonal day of religious celebration at or following the Spring Equinox. Cybele, the Phrygian fertility goddess, had a consort, Attis, who was believed to have been born via a virgin birth. Attis was believed to have died and been resurrected each year during the period MAR-22 to MAR-25.

Gerald L. Berry, author of “Religions of the World,” wrote:

“About 200 B.C. mystery cults began to appear in Rome just as they had earlier in Greece. Most notable was the Cybele cult centered on Vatican hill …Associated with the Cybele cult was that of her lover, Attis (the older Tammuz, Osiris, Dionysus, or Orpheus under a new name). He was a god of ever-reviving vegetation. Born of a virgin, he died and was reborn annually. The festival began as a day of blood on Black Friday and culminated after three days in a day of rejoicing over the resurrection.” 3

Wherever Christian worship of Jesus and Pagan worship of Attis were active in the same geographical area in ancient times, Christians:

“… used to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus on the same date; and pagans and Christians used to quarrel bitterly about which of their gods was the true prototype and which the imitation.”

Many religious historians and liberal theologians believe that the death and resurrection legends were first associated with Attis, many centuries before the birth of Jesus. They were simply grafted onto stories of Jesus’ life in order to make Christian theology more acceptable to Pagans. Others suggest that many of the events in Jesus’ life that were recorded in the gospels were lifted from the life of Krishna, the second person of the Hindu Trinity. Ancient Christians had an alternative explanation; they claimed that Satan had created counterfeit deities in advance of the coming of Christ in order to confuse humanity. 4 Modern-day Christians generally regard the Attis legend as being a Pagan myth of little value with no connection to Jesus. They regard Jesus’ death and resurrection account as being true, and unrelated to the earlier tradition.

Wiccans and other modern-day Neopagans continue to celebrate the Spring Equinox as one of their 8 yearly Sabbats (holy days of celebration). Near the Mediterranean, this is a time of sprouting of the summer’s crop; farther north, it is the time for seeding. Their rituals at the Spring Equinox are related primarily to the fertility of the crops and to the balance of the day and night times. In those places where Wiccans can safely celebrate the Sabbat out of doors without threat of religious persecution, they often incorporate a bonfire into their rituals, jumping over the dying embers is believed to assure fertility of people and crops.

But rest assured, if they are successful at defunding it or even at putting their cronies in charge of it to help it along a path to self-destruction, they will only come back at another point in the future and say, “you see, it was a failure,” and that is where the ignorant little mouthpieces such as “good little “liberal”" come in.

Nope. Just pointing out the insanity that is the GOP’s obstruction to raising the debt limit. By voting for Ryan’s plan, they’ve already conceded to raising the debt limit.

Honestly, I don’t like Ryan’s plan or Obama’s plan. I don’t think either of them do exactly what we need to do. I said long ago that I was ok with giving up deductions like mortgage interest and the standard child deduction if that money went towards paying down the debt. I’ve also given what my thoughs are as far as what needs to be done, and neither plan does that. They both kick the can down the road instead of addressing issues forthright.

You’re almost right. It’s hypocritical because of the claims that it was “all Democratic effort with no compromose” when there were many concessions made to appease both Republicans and Conservative Democrats. Then, to campaign and stir up the sh*t that they did in a “Repeal and Replace” mode only to co-opt it, is pure BS. SoCo, I’d hardly call tweaks to HCR “compromise”. Not a single significant GOP proposal was even allowed out of committee for a vote. None. The Dems own this completely and totally.

Now to your earlier point, of course the debt ceiling has to be raised – eventually.

But if threatening to delay that raising gets real, honest negotiations on reducing spending, I’m all for it. Frankly, this entire world needs a big ‘ol wake-up call regarding government debt, and it’s about time we had it.

Southern Comfort (aka The Man)

April 24th, 2011
12:52 pm

Dave

We’ll have to disagree on the “compromise” in the HCR then. When you say “hell no” to the public option, and it’s removed, whether it was to appease you or conservatives in your own party, that’s a compromise. There may not have been a crapload of compromise, but there was some. Individual mandate was championed by the GOP in the 90’s and used by Romney, however, now it’s toxic to the GOP. As I said, I didn’t like the HCR, but I blame BOTH parties and not just the Democrats.

As far as your 2nd point, that word “if” carries a lot of power to disappoint you. I don’t think threats end up bringing about real, honest negotiations at all. If anything, I think it only ramps up the partisanship. Somebody up in DC has to be the grown-up, but for right now, I don’t see any of the 535 stepping up anytime soon.

SoCo, the problem with relying on “well they supported such and such back in the (fill in the blank)’ is that you rely on something being static that isn’t. And frankly, it’s a lazy way to try to make a point.

We’re not back in the (fill in the blank), and we never will be, and just because something sounded good under different circumstances doesn’t mean it’s a good idea in the circumstances we are in today. In fact, it might just exacerbate our problems today.

To bring out the oft-misinterpreted “Deficits don’t matter” quote, when your debt is $2-3 trillion dollars and your deficit is a couple of hundred billion, deficits don’t matter as much as when your debt is $14 trillion and you’re growing it by 15% each year with no plan to address it.

There is no better time to address this problem in a dramatic and serious fashion, and not raising the debt ceiling is the way to get serious with this problem.

Well, what a fine day indeed. Atlanta sunshine is at its brightest & best. Our pastor even started his sermon by saying “This is a great day” as he looked out the big windows (and he has to lead two services).

The church was beautiful. Easter liles were placed all around and the choir sang happy hymns of joy while the organist was inspired. Outside, tree roses were red and svelt in their bright petals and so pretty. Inside, the old, young and inbetweens smiled at each other in the fellowship of Christian worship. A little girl about six years old lit the altar candles with great pride.

As ’tis said: “Joy comes in the morning” and so it did today as every day when we consider the message of this special morning.

I won’t leave any “literature” or songs for you. I always liked the twenty third psalm on any day. But I am thankful for Easter and the joy it brings to heart and mind. Very thankful…

“How does that jibe with Dave R.’s claims about that 14.3 trillion dollar debt limit and how deficits don’t matter.”

I’m trying to figure out if “Davy Jones Locker” is as dumb as a sack of hammers, or even dumber. I guess the trouble usually comes in when someone can’t read, and worse yet, doesn’t understand what he reads.

Either way, to sum up what Davy Jones Locker doesn’t understand, the “Deficits don’t matter” quote from Dick Cheney was used when Cheney was referencing Ronald Reagan’s election issues back in the ’80s. And he was rightly surmising that back then deficits didn’t matter to Reagan’s re-election chances. (Full disclosure compels me to point out that I didn’t like deficits back in ANY decade, and expressed my displeasure to my congressman at the time) In short, I agree with the electoral assessment, but not with the fiscal issue.

My issue today is with the loony left constantly harping on one particular quote that has no meaning today as something they can use to discredit current GOP efforts to control spending. In my mind deficits and debt are always bad, but are exponentially worse now and need to be brought under control.

Happy Easter, America, pt. 2. from

The Warped US Tax System: Taxpayers Subsidize Their Own Destruction

One of the more interesting battles being waged right now is between labor and Boeing, the aerospace and defense corporation. The National Labor Relations Board accuses the company of illegally retaliating against its largest union when it decided in 2009 to put a second 787 Dreamliner assembly line in a nonunion plant in South Carolina.

[...]

Endless mini-bailouts [...] and harsh austerity measures won’t pay off for citizens, or corporations, in the long run. South Carolina legislators plan to cut $700 million from the state budget by hacking away at Medicare and education programs. Meanwhile, the detrimental ripple effects of education cuts are likely to far outweigh any temporary benefits the state might have gained from luring Boeing into its borders. Citizens will obviously suffer, but so too will business. For example, Boeing isn’t going to be super eager to hire the products of a failing South Carolinian educational system to work in its plants.

Conservatives constantly exalt the glories of the free market, except there’s nothing free about taxpayers subsidizing the anti-union behavior of companies like Boeing. This kind of corporate welfare system is rigged to force citizens to bankroll their own destruction. If every company followed the Boeing model, there would be no unions, no collective bargaining, and no assurance for the majority of poor workers that they can have any protection from their corporate overlords.

Dave R.

Our long-term debt is like a gangrenous limb. If you don’t do something drastic in the short-term that harms the patient, eventually that patient dies.

Not raising the debt ceiling right now is the amputation needed to get the patient back to extended life.

And just because something is seen as a political move (as well), doesn’t mean the idea for the economy is a bad one. It just serves a dual purpose.

But to single-threaded people like liberals, maybe that’s all they can handle . . .

Not raising the debit ceiling, plunging the world’s economy into a catastrophic morass, does not save the injured patient.

Without the economy of the USA, which is the world’s engine for economic activity, being finely tuned, the economy of the world burns more “fuel” to reach any destination.

OK, we’re talking about 4 months in office, and a Senate still in Democrat hands.

Plus you have to realize that the GOP takes a different view of what actually creates jobs than the Dems do, and they know that government borrowing to fund one-time jobs isn’t a long-term way to grow jobs. SSN and Medicare were both designed as safety nets, not as entitlements. But somehow, because of the promises that politicians of both parties made over the years, everything got screwed up and people conducted their lives built upon the belief that even if they did the wrong things they could rely on these programs to save them. Guaranteed entitlements make people lazy and they make people dependent. Now we pretty much have an entire nation that thinks that they deserve and will receive sustenance from the government through these and other programs. As pertaining to the money to pay for these social programs, the Government is nothing more than an illusion. It has no money of its own and it does not create one dollar to pay for these programs. It is totally dependent upon the working population and the private sector to pay its bills. Another words, the government has no vested interest (other than getting elected again) so really what do they have to lose? They will take care of themselves far better than they will ever take care of us and all they have to do is promise.

Most treatments for serious ailments require a multi pronged strategy, so Dr Dave R left out what else we need to do to get this patient back on it’s feet… Let W’s tax gifts expire, and reduce spending are two other courses of treatment that will be required, otherwise he’s treating a cancer patient with chemo and not operating to reduce the tumor or having the patient undergo radiation treatments… as well the patient needs to undergo some lifestyle changes that Dave and his ilk are loath to admit…

The debt is a contractual obligation secured by bonds and other instruments.
If we do not meet our contractural obligations, we would be in default on our contracts. This would lead to worldwide economic chaos with the leading loser being the “good faith and credit of the United States.”

Any further borrowing by us from the world community would mean paying higher interest rates or an outright refusal to lend to us.

The population is larger and older, therefore, health care costs take up almost 18% of the budget by itself.

We have between 30 and 60 days to pay interest on our current debt, and we have revenues coming in daily to this government. So we fund for however long it takes to come to a reasonable compromise on spending cuts with existing revenues. if Congress is smart (I know, a big leap of faith there, especially given that mental midgets such as Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer are in the Senate), they understand the REAL urgency coming up 60 days after not raising the debt ceiling and make a deal.

I don’t disagree with your statement “is it a case where the private sector needs to lead our way out of it.” My problem is that I don’t think the private sector sees it that way, nor do they even have the appearance of thinking it’s them that are the key to the solution. SoCo,
It must be understood that business is in business to survive and to prosper. Earning profits is the only way business accomplishes those two important objectives. Governments role is to facilitate not to stand as impediments or an adversarial environment is created that isn’t beneficial to the country as a whole. Unfortunately, our government today is more concerned with politics and less concerned with their facilitation role and that has created an adversarial environment. Should government maintain oversight and regulate where it’s necessary to maintain healthy balance? Of course, however, that’s not the case today. Remember, the roots of our countries success is based on an economy that depends on private enterprise and not on the central control of government. We’ve upset that balance and that’s the root of our problem.

The real grown ups looked at the Ryan plan and started asking the grown up questions such as why does the national debt keep going up under the Ryan plan while the billionaire libertarians get more tax cuts and the seniors get a voucher to buy private insurance at a higher cost if they can get coverage at all while the poor sick lose medicaid and the starving lose their food stamps…

The one good thing the Ryan plan does is finally put the Republican party on display for all to see. By all means, bring us more town hall meetings. Show us how you will convince your own base to slit their wrists for your cause.

Fleeing the Dollar Flood
The world tries to protect itself from U.S. monetary policy.

Members of the International Monetary Fund emerged from their huddle in Washington last weekend resolved to keep every option open to slow the flood of dollars pouring into their countries, including capital controls. That’s a dangerous game, given the need for investment to drive economic development. But it’s also increasingly typical of the world’s reaction to America’s mismanagement of the dollar and its eroding financial leadership.

From Jackie’s Daily Kos story:

“Social Security expenditures are expected to exceed tax receipts this year for the first time since 1983. The projected deficit of $41 billion this year…”

Bottom line: The government is paying out $41 billion more this year than it takes in. The SS trust fund has nothing in it. The money has to come from some other source, and that source is the general budget.

The general budget is in the red already. Treasury will simply issue a new bond to replace the one in the existing “trust fund.” Once we recover completely from the Bush recession and get everyone back to work that wants to work the taxes will exceed the outflow again.

If you would have taken the time to read a little further, you would not have embarresed yourself:

“To: Editor@Factcheck.org
Subject: Wrong, wrong, wrong on Social Security and the deficit

1. Except for the newly-implemented Payroll Tax (FICA) cut, Social Security does not contribute to the debt in ANY WAY!

2. Your assertion that USA Today’s editorial writers were correct when they said that Social Security went “into the red last year” is WRONG! It didn’t. Revenue from SS payroll taxes was less than benefits that were paid out, but the interest from the SSTF exceeded that shortfall, and so the overall “income” to the Trust Fund exceeded the payouts! There wasn’t an “annual surplus”, but there’s still a surplus! It’s not “in the red”! Not in any way. There’s not a “negative cash flow”, since income plus interest is greater than benefits! That doesn’t happen for several more years, until 2016 or so (with a caveat for the unique FICA cut this year). The surplus in 2009 was 134 billion. The income in 2010 was expected to be 82 billion. For 2011, it’s 72 billion, but then in 2012 it’s expected to be 87 billion, and it reaches 94 billion in 2016. It’s not “in the red”.

3. The reason that Social Security “contributes to our fiscal woes” is because the Social Security Trust Fund (SSTF) has been loaning money to the General Fund, instead of the government having to borrow from US citizens or foreign countries. Once the amount of money in the SSTF stops growing, then the Trust Fund will have to start cashing in the special issue securities from the US Treasury to fund the benefits that retirees, disabled workers and survivors collect. The General Fund will NOT be paying those benefits. The General Fund will have to supplement the money that they have to pay out, but it’s not taxpayers that will be funding those benefits.”

According to the Republicans on here, we need to be concerned about government IOUs in the social security trust fund. Has anyone informed the holders of that total14 trillion yet (the trust fund holdings account for just a part of that). They’ll be expecting their interest payments, on schedule. Go ahead, tell them their payment is not coming unless the billionaires are granted another tax cut because that is the only way the Republicans will agree to raise the debt ceiling. Now THAT is also known as a funny.

Unfortunately, we’re not controlling the devaluation of the dollar, it’s controlling us. The cost of oil significantly increases and effects consumer costs in a fragile recovery. Some economists are predicting that we can fall into deep recession. I hope they’re wrong but the scary thing is that no one can predict with creditable certainty that they are wrong.

Jackie

@Del

The problem with oil / gas prices are the “speculators.”
There is so much oil on the world market, the USA does not facilities to store all the oil and other refined petroleum products.

It is so bad, we are using oil tankers floating in the ocean as storage facilities.

As you know, the valuation of a currency is based on “good faith and credit” of the said country. Who else in the world has the clout and muscle to better the world’s economy than the USA.

The other major problem we are having is Moody’s talking about downgrading our debt is due to the fact there is no movement on raising the debt ceiling in Washington, DC.

It has riled the world’s currency markets because there is a fear of having to raise interest rates on debt instruments. Not good for a fragile economy.

Moody’s didn’t report anything we didn’t already know, hence the one day reaction. Saudi Arabia just cut production because of the glut of oil. The speculators are robbing us. Why do we continue to let them? The oil companies own much of the oil and the refineries. Why are they selling it instead of just delivering it to the refinery? The commodity futures markets have outlived their usefullness in this computer managed inventory age.

Turns out he was from the Greatest Generation, and they were selling the boat. His grandson was asking questions with the stark honesty of a child. “Hey, Grampy, why are we doin’ all this to the boat?” He said, ” Well, the family that’s gettin this boat is goin out on the big bad ocean with their children, and remember when Great-Gramp fixed it before we went out? Thats right. He paid it forward. And I care. Its the right thing to do. We are doing this because that’s the kind of people we are – people of character, people of substance. If I didn’t do everything I could to make it right, you know, pay it forward, and that man got out on the ocean, and it was every man for himself, and he lost them, well we’re just not the kind of stinkin shirkin weasels that would do that, son – you remember that”

Good Morning – Attention serious debt reduction proposal ahead-

“And that’s why the only major budget proposal out there offering a plausible path to balancing the budget is the one that includes significant tax increases: the “People’s Budget” from the Congressional Progressive Caucus, which — unlike the Ryan plan, which was just right-wing orthodoxy with an added dose of magical thinking — is genuinely courageous because it calls for shared sacrifice.

True, it increases revenue partly by imposing substantially higher taxes on the wealthy, which is popular everywhere except inside the Beltway. But it also calls for a rise in the Social Security cap, significantly raising taxes on around 6 percent of workers. And, by rescinding many of the Bush tax cuts, not just those affecting top incomes, it would modestly raise taxes even on middle-income families.”

There it is, why is that so hard to do?

LBB @ 8:48 The GOP quite correctly slapped the blame for Obozo wasting $1 trillion on a failed stimulus that was really just a slush fund for public union employee payoffs. The GOP also correctly criticized your Idiot Messiah, fascist that he is, for confiscating what was left of GM and Chrysler and giving it to his union goons, rather than leaving it with its rightful owners.

Wrong & epic failure in so many ways.

One third of the stimulus was tax cuts, so if it was a slush fund for public union employees, then the GOP tax cuts are nothing more than slush funds for their corporate johns. Also, the only person who regularly calls Obama any type of Messiah is you, and I hope and pray that you don’t end up being punished for worshipping an idol god. I’ll continue to pray for mercy for your soul, because day in and day out you prove over and over again that you really need it.

Del @ 8:57 It must be understood that business is in business to survive and to prosper. Earning profits is the only way business accomplishes those two important objectives.

Businesses are nothing more than parasites feeding off of their customers (hosts) then. If the customer base disappears, then so will the businesses. Why do you think there are so many unemployed and underemployed here in the US? There has to be a symbiotic relationship between host and parasite (customer and business) for both to survive. Any imbalance, and the whole system is out of whack, and the system has been out of balance here for a long time due to outsourcing and wage stagnation.

“But it also calls for a rise in the Social Security cap, significantly raising taxes on around 6 percent of workers.”

Has it not been reported here in Jay’s columns that some modest age adjustments will carry Social Security well into the future? If so, the raising of the income cap is nothing more than an back-door tax increase, as it’s an admission SS revenues are siphoned off to fund general government operations. For that reason, I’d oppose that provision.
