Travelin’ to Graceland, Graceland, Graceland Tennessee

Once they’ve made a name and career for themselves, novelists, musicians, actors, painters and other creatives face a common challenge: Now what? Do you keep doing what you’ve done, what made you famous, or do you bust out of that niche and try something fresh and new?

Twenty-five years ago, a semi-washed-up pop star by the name of Paul Simon decided to try to something new, infusing his work with exotic influences from South Africa and Louisiana and Mexico. In “Graceland,” Simon produced one of those rare albums in which musicianship and creativity were rewarded with popularity. It was a fresh work of art by a mature professional, plus it made your feet twitch and your heart jump.

In its Silver Anniversary year, here’s the title cut:

Go easy on LBB. Everyone has to have an outlet for their pent up energy. Some people paint, other’s restore cars, and LBB posts on this blog. Can’t fault a guy for posting what he believes, regardless to whether it’s right or wrong. In the eyes of the poster, what he believes is always right, and those who disagree are wrong.

ONE: ‘You shall have no other gods before Me.’

TWO: ‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image–any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.’

THREE: ‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.’

FOUR: ‘Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.’

FIVE: ‘Honor your father and your mother.’

SIX: ‘You shall not murder.’

SEVEN: ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

EIGHT: ‘You shall not steal.’

NINE: ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.’

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:36-40).

A reflective reading of Christ’s teaching reveals that the first four commandments given to the children of Israel are contained in the statement: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” It continues that the last six commandments are enclosed in the statement: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

G’morning all, and a Happy Easter Sunday to all observing this holiday.

Kinda been scratching my head over the posturing the GOP has been doing over the debt limit. I wonder if they realize that they’ve already painted themselves into a corner. I came across a link to a LA Times blog that had the following:

The fiscal 2012 budget resolution proposed by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) drew the support of all 235 Republicans present and voting Friday, as well as the opposition from all 193 Democrats in attendance. That means 235 members of the House GOP are now on record in favor of slowing the growth of domestic discretionary spending and Medicaid, shrinking the deficit gradually through fiscal 2015, and sharply reducing federal spending as a percentage of the economy over the long term.

They’re also on record favoring an increase in the debt ceiling, which currently stands at $14.3 trillion.

Pages 5 and 6 of the budget resolution declare that the “appropriate levels of debt” subject to the debt ceiling are as follows:

Fiscal year 2012: $16,204,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2013: $17,177,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2014: $17,955,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2015: $18,704,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2016: $19,513,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2017: $20,257,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2018: $20,981,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2019: $21,711,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2020: $22,416,000,000,000.
Fiscal year 2021: $23,105,000,000,000.

Being my curious self, I didn’t take their word for it, and I went to look it up for myself. I found a copy of the Ryan budget proposal and looked at pages 5&6 like they said. Wondering what it says??

According to the Ryan proposal:

1 TITLE I—RECOMMENDED
2 LEVELS AND AMOUNTS
3 SEC. 101. RECOMMENDED LEVELS AND AMOUNTS.
4 The following budgetary levels are appropriate for
5 each of fiscal years 2012 through 2021:

[...]

9 (4) DEFICITS (ON-BUDGET).—For purposes of
10 the enforcement of this resolution, the amounts of
11 the deficits (on-budget) are as follows:
12 Fiscal year 2012: $1,081,463,000,000.
13 Fiscal year 2013: $787,899,000,000.
14 Fiscal year 2014: $581,261,000,000.
15 Fiscal year 2015: $527,165,000,000.
16 Fiscal year 2016: $577,014,000,000.
17 Fiscal year 2017: $501,418,000,000.
18 Fiscal year 2018: $464,036,000,000.
19 Fiscal year 2019: $490,469,000,000.
20 Fiscal year 2020: $464,392,000,000.
21 Fiscal year 2021: $433,912,000,000.
22 (5) DEBT SUBJECT TO LIMIT.—Pursuant to
23 section 301(a)(5) of the Congressional Budget Act
24 of 1974, the appropriate levels of the public debt are
25 as follows:

•HCON 34 RH
1 Fiscal year 2012: $16,204,000,000,000.
2 Fiscal year 2013: $17,177,000,000,000.
3 Fiscal year 2014: $17,955,000,000,000.
4 Fiscal year 2015: $18,704,000,000,000.
5 Fiscal year 2016: $19,513,000,000,000.
6 Fiscal year 2017: $20,257,000,000,000.
7 Fiscal year 2018: $20,981,000,000,000.
8 Fiscal year 2019: $21,711,000,000,000.
9 Fiscal year 2020: $22,416,000,000,000.
10 Fiscal year 2021: $23,105,000,000,000.

Seems like the House GOP has already said that our debt limit will eventually end up at least around $23 Trillion within the next 10 years, so why play games and risk our economy with their hardball tactics? I can not grasp the logic with playing such a dangerous game of chicken with our future. We all know that there’s gotta be change in the way we’re running our budgets, but don’t risk throwing the entire globe into a depression to gain ideological ground. That’s pure jackassery.

Everybody wants the best for as many Americans as possible. Democrats believe that it is up to the government to make people happy. Republicans believe the private sector should improve the lives of others.

Just look at the misery that has happened to America since the Democrats took over Congress in 2007 and especially the horrible shape the economy has sunk to since the clown-in-chief took over. So what is just a big stack of lies to the uneducated, indoctrinated, blind liberals?

Stop repeating the garbage you hear from Salon.com and take a look around. Look at our economy. Look at the unemployment rate. Look at the cost of gas and the cost of food. Even if you are dumb enough to believe the Republican Congress did this, don’t you think that four years should have been enough to turn it around.

In other words, liberals, get a clue.

For your enlightenment…

Origins of the name “Easter”:
The name “Easter” originated with the names of an ancient Goddess and God. The Venerable Bede, (672-735 CE.) a Christian scholar, first asserted in his book De Ratione Temporum that Easter was named after Eostre (a.k.a. Eastre). She was the Great Mother Goddess of the Saxon people in Northern Europe. Similarly, the “Teutonic dawn goddess of fertility [was] known variously as Ostare, Ostara, Ostern, Eostra, Eostre, Eostur, Eastra, Eastur, Austron and Ausos.” 1 Her name was derived from the ancient word for spring: “eastre.” Similar Goddesses were known by other names in ancient cultures around the Mediterranean, and were celebrated in the springtime. Some were:

Aphrodite from ancient Cyprus
Ashtoreth from ancient Israel
Astarte from ancient Greece
Demeter from Mycenae
Hathor from ancient Egypt
Ishtar from Assyria
Kali, from India
Ostara a Norse Goddess of fertility.

An alternative explanation has been suggested. The name given by the Frankish church to Jesus’ resurrection festival included the Latin word “alba” which means “white.” (This was a reference to the white robes that were worn during the festival.) “Alba” also has a second meaning: “sunrise.” When the name of the festival was translated into German, the “sunrise” meaning was selected in error. This became “ostern” in German. Ostern has been proposed as the origin of the word “Easter”. 2

There are two popular beliefs about the origin of the English word “Sunday.” It is derived from the name of the Scandinavian sun Goddess Sunna (a.k.a. Sunne, Frau Sonne). 5,6
It is derived from “Sol,” the Roman God of the Sun.” Their phrase “Dies Solis” means “day of the Sun.” The Christian saint Jerome (d. 420) commented “If it is called the day of the sun by the pagans, we willingly accept this name, for on this day the Light of the world arose, on this day the Sun of Justice shone forth.” 7

Sponsored link:

Pagan origins of Easter:
Many, perhaps most, Pagan religions in the Mediterranean area had a major seasonal day of religious celebration at or following the Spring Equinox. Cybele, the Phrygian fertility goddess, had a consort, Attis, who was believed to have been born via a virgin birth. Attis was believed to have died and been resurrected each year during the period MAR-22 to MAR-25.

Gerald L. Berry, author of “Religions of the World,” wrote:

“About 200 B.C. mystery cults began to appear in Rome just as they had earlier in Greece. Most notable was the Cybele cult centered on Vatican hill …Associated with the Cybele cult was that of her lover, Attis (the older Tammuz, Osiris, Dionysus, or Orpheus under a new name). He was a god of ever-reviving vegetation. Born of a virgin, he died and was reborn annually. The festival began as a day of blood on Black Friday and culminated after three days in a day of rejoicing over the resurrection.” 3

Wherever Christian worship of Jesus and Pagan worship of Attis were active in the same geographical area in ancient times, Christians:

“… used to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus on the same date; and pagans and Christians used to quarrel bitterly about which of their gods was the true prototype and which the imitation.”

Many religious historians and liberal theologians believe that the death and resurrection legends were first associated with Attis, many centuries before the birth of Jesus. They were simply grafted onto stories of Jesus’ life in order to make Christian theology more acceptable to Pagans. Others suggest that many of the events in Jesus’ life that were recorded in the gospels were lifted from the life of Krishna, the second person of the Hindu Trinity. Ancient Christians had an alternative explanation; they claimed that Satan had created counterfeit deities in advance of the coming of Christ in order to confuse humanity. 4 Modern-day Christians generally regard the Attis legend as being a Pagan myth of little value with no connection to Jesus. They regard Jesus’ death and resurrection account as being true, and unrelated to the earlier tradition.

Wiccans and other modern-day Neopagans continue to celebrate the Spring Equinox as one of their 8 yearly Sabbats (holy days of celebration). Near the Mediterranean, this is a time of sprouting of the summer’s crop; farther north, it is the time for seeding. Their rituals at the Spring Equinox are related primarily to the fertility of the crops and to the balance of the day and night times. In those places where Wiccans can safely celebrate the Sabbat out of doors without threat of religious persecution, they often incorporate a bonfire into their rituals, jumping over the dying embers is believed to assure fertility of people and crops.

Continuing SoCo’s 10:58 conclusion, recall the Republican’s more recent proclamation that they would defund the latest healthcare legislation in order to make sure it fails. But rest assured, if they are successful at defunding it or even at putting their cronies in charge of it to help it along a path to self-destruction, they will only come back at another point in the future and say, “you see, it was a failure,” and that is where the ignorant little mouthpieces such as “good little “liberal”" come in.

Nope. Just pointing out the insanity that is the GOP’s obstruction to raising the debt limit. By voting for Ryan’s plan, they’ve already conceded to raising the debt limit.

Honestly, I don’t like Ryan’s plan or Obama’s plan. I don’t think either of them do exactly what we need to do. I said long ago that I was ok with giving up deductions like mortgage interest and the standard child deduction if that money went towards paying down the debt. I’ve also given what my thoughs are as far as what needs to be done, and neither plan does that. They both kick the can down the road instead of addressing issues forthright.

You’re almost right. It’s hypocritical because of the claims that it was “all Democratic effort with no compromose” when there were many concessions made to appease both Republicans and Conservative Democrats. Then, to campaign and stir up the sh*t that they did in a “Repeal and Replace” mode only to co-opt it, is pure BS. They’d have more respect from me if they had more pragmatic and not bashed sledgehammers to everyone’s emotions.

And, no it’s not Liberal logic. It’s Southern Comfort logic. Contrary to your opinon, there is a difference. Just because I don’t follow the same beliefs you do, I’m not a Liberal.

If that’s the case, then why go through all the effort to demonize it in the beginning. All the stuff that was done to stir up anger and emotion was, in my honest opinion, completely unnecessary. As humans, we make better decisions when we’re thinking clearly and not hopped up on emotion. I didn’t like the ACA, but I also didn’t like the effort to rile people up to Defcon 1 to make a point.

SoCo, I’d hardly call tweaks to HCR “compromise”. Not a single significant GOP proposal was even allowed out of committee for a vote. None. The Dems own this completely and totally.

Now to your earlier point, of course the debt ceiling has to be raised – eventually.

But if threatening to delay that raising gets real, honest negotiations on reducing spending, I’m all for it. Frankly, this entire world needs a big ‘ol wake-up call regarding government debt, and it’s about time we had it.

Southern Comfort (aka The Man)

April 24th, 2011

Dave

We’ll have to disagree on the “compromise” in the HCR then. When you say “hell no” to the public option, and it’s removed, whether it was to appease you or conservatives in your own party, that’s a compromise. There may not have been a crapload of compromise, but there was some. Individual mandate was championed by the GOP in the 90’s and used by Romney, however, now it’s toxic to the GOP. As I said, I didn’t like the HCR, but I blame BOTH parties and not just the Democrats.

As far as your 2nd point, that word “if” carries a lot of power to disappoint you. I don’t think threats end up bringing about real, honest negotiations at all. If anything, I think it only ramps up the partisanship. Somebody up in DC has to be the grown-up, but for right now, I don’t see any of the 535 stepping up anytime soon.

SoCo, the problem with relying on “well they supported such and such back in the (fill in the blank)’ is that you rely on something being static that isn’t. And frankly, it’s a lazy way to try to make a point.

We’re not back in the (fill in the blank), and we never will be, and just because something sounded good under different circumstances doesn’t mean it’s a good idea in the circumstances we are in today. In fact, it might just exacerbate our problems today.

To bring out the oft-misinterpreted “Deficits don’t matter” quote, when your debt is $2-3 trillion dollars and your deficit is a couple of hundred billion, deficits don’t matter as much as when your debt is $14 trillion and you’re growing it by 15% each year with no plan to address it.

There is no better time to address this problem in a dramatic and serious fashion, and not raising the debt ceiling is the way to get serious with this problem.

I understand that positions and ideals change over time. I also think that it’s wrong to give the appearance that you thoroughly oppose something when you’ve preached it in the past. If you say that you no longer think it’s a good idea is completely different from straight up demonizing something just for pure effect.

You’ll never hear me bring up that deficits quote because I think it was wrong then, and it’s wrong now regardless of the meaning and/or interpretation. I agree with your last statement, but I just don’t think Ryan’s nor Obama’s plan does that.

The Paul Ryan Indebtedness plan (from SoCo’s earlier post):

How does that jibe with Dave R.’s claims about that 14.3 trillion dollar debt limit and how deficits don’t matter.

Well, what a fine day indeed. Atlanta sunshine is at its brightest & best. Our pastor even started his sermon by saying “This is a great day” as he looked out the big windows (and he has to lead two services).

The church was beautiful. Easter liles were placed all around and the choir sang happy hymns of joy while the organist was inspired. Outside, tree roses were red and svelt in their bright petals and so pretty. Inside, the old, young and inbetweens smiled at each other in the fellowship of Christian worship. A little girl about six years old lit the altar candles with great pride.

As ’tis said: “Joy comes in the morning” and so it did today as every day when we consider the message of this special morning.

I won’t leave any “literature” or songs for you. I always liked the twenty third psalm on any day. But I am thankful for Easter and the joy it brings to heart and mind. Very thankful…
