Once they’ve made a name and career for themselves, novelists, musicians, actors, painters and other creatives face a common challenge: Now what? Do you keep doing what you’ve done, what made you famous, or do you bust out of that niche and try something fresh and new?
Twenty-five years ago, a semi-washed-up pop star by the name of Paul Simon decided to try to something new, infusing his work with exotic influences from South Africa and Louisiana and Mexico. In “Graceland,” Simon produced one of those rare albums in which musicianship and creativity were rewarded with popularity. It was a fresh work of art by a mature professional, plus it made your feet twitch and your heart jump.
In its Silver Anniversary year, here’s the title cut:

Not long afterward he was at a black college and the students were accusing him of racism because he was white and “Stevie Wonder could have done it”. As he defended himself from these attacks, the students gave him looks of pure hatred
since someone needs to say it–what a stupid [bleep]ing thing to bring up.
simon got a little pushback. He pushed back. He got his props and then some, from all kinds of folks.

Since the theme is people re-inventing themselves, Tommy James was another who did that. He went through several phases, from pure pop to psychedelic. Alex Cooley, who was THE promoter in Atlanta at one time, said James looked at music as purely a business. He was going to play whatever was selling at the time.

Dollar’s Decline Speeds Up, With Risks for U.S.
The U.S. dollar’s downward slide is accelerating as low interest rates, inflation concerns and the massive federal budget deficit undermine the currency.
With no relief in sight for the dollar on any of those fronts, the downward pressure on the dollar is widely expected to continue.

I agree about the Omni but don’t remember much about the concerts.
I do remember watching Nirvana trash the stage for about the whole show with Courtney holding the baby and shaking her head.
The Fox Theater was the place to see shows. One of the best was Soundgarten Superunkown concert where they played the whole Album and it sounded perfect.

Earth Day Ends Obama’s 53,300 Gallon Trip
President Obama declared today’s 41st annual Earth Day proof of America’s ecological and conservation spirit—then completed a three-day campaign-style trip logging 10,666 miles on Air Force One, eating up some 53,300 gallons at a cost of about $180,000. And that doesn’t include the fuel consumption of his helicopter, limo, or the 29 other vehicles that travel with that car.

Here is Paul Simon in his maturity – he’ll be 70 this fall. Take a listen to this pristine performance of “Love and Hard Times.” I thought all might enjoy it, especially in light of this weekend’s meaning. First line: “God and His only Son paid a courtesy call on Earth one Sunday morning. . .” He transitions, midway, from the metaphysical to the personal . . . love, in any form, is beautiful.

You must know that asking religious people to give up their myths on any occasion is an exercise in futility. I don’t know what your military background is my friend but I fear you have much to learn.
1) If that tank tread ain’t replaced quickly that tank doesn’t move and your a** ain’t covered.
2) If that soldier next to you is not strong enough to pick you up with all your gear (and his) and get you out of the line of fire your a** ain’t covered.
3) If that co-pilot shot down with you is not strong enough to slit a throat so your hiding position won’t be given away your a** ain’t covered.
I think you get the picture.
90% of war is supply, support and administration. 10% is infantry combat. Of that last 10% ……….. 80 to 90% of it involves shooting at someone. The remaining small percentage involves vicious hand to hand combat you probably can’t even imagine and a place where women are not qualified.
Remember, the “hand to hand” combat training at a military base (not so rough as to actually get someone hurt) is totally differrent from that with a crazed enemy combatant fightiing for his life.
If a female soldier has to shoot her rilfe at the enemy from an ambushed truck convoy bringing a beer supply to the front line troops, that’s the military’s fault for putting her there in that situation.
The combat arms designations are no place for women. That kind of political correctness just gets good people killed.
Notice why there are no women playing in the NFL? Isn’t that a little discriminatory?
(P.S. Start about the 2 min. mark and let’s get a female in there for this knife fight)

What, pray tell, have conservative–out of power for several years now (and even the Republican House has essentially no power at this stage to push an agenda)–done to impact gas prices?
Today’s higher gas prices are a result of:
* higher than normal levels of unrest in the Mideast, esp. Libya
* QE2 (weaker dollar)
* recovery from the recession increasing demand world wide

Southern Comfort (aka The Man) :
Unlike some others on here, thanks for your reasoned response.
A couple of problems I see:
1) As to your first point you are correct. There are a few women (a genetic test may be in order) out there who could possibly have won that knife fight. I’m thinking of some of these female wrestlers, body builders, I think they are starting Women’s Olympic wrestling now, etc., etc.
However, what happens is because of those very, very, very, few (who probably want nothing to do with the military anyway) you open up a door to women who are flat not qualified. They may look it, talk it, and practice it in little war games on base ……………… but not the real deal.
Again, I challenge you to find me the best female linebacker in the United States and let’s see if she can play in the NFL.
2) As to the video, police work is NOT combat. Now before you or anyone else get all worked up …………. I have done both. Here’s the difference.
A) In police work you do not kill “to kill”. You may use only the restraint or force necessary to complete the arrest or stop the unlawful action. More and you get sued, fired and/or prosecuted.
It goes like this and the decision usually has to be made in seconds:
Presence
Verbal Command
Soft Hands
Hard Hands
Chemical Weapons
Taser Weapons
Impact Weapons
Deadly Force
And you NEVER say on the witness stand that you shot to “kill” the bank robber. No ……… you say you “shot to rendered the individual incapable of continuing the action which prompted you to shoot.”
Bottom line: There are a lot of men who do not belong in the military combat arms and you usually only find out when it’s too late and lives are lost. Adding women to that equation would be a disaster.

Not the type of reasoned response I expected from you but so be it. Thanks for the exchange.

I see your point. However, I’m also aware that the human mind is capable of pushing our bodies beyond what we think we’re capable of doing. Adrenaline, for one, doesn’t discriminate between male and female bodies, and you always find stories of people doing unimaginable things while hopped up on it. Years ago, I probably would have agreed with you. Now, I think it’s more dependent upon the individual person as opposed to the sex. There are many men who probably couldn’t handle combat and/or police work.
Catch y’all later. Time to go have some fun with the lil one…

I hear you but 99+% of men can’t handle professional football either so let’s don’t throw women into the equation. We could force each NFL to have two women for each team on the field for each play but the game just wouldn’t be the same now would it ?

The Corporal Scout ponders his belly button, still trying to figure out if it is an innie or outie, no doubt, and manages to dump these fine thoughts on us in the process:
I wonder if the gay men get to pick the women’s uniforms and the lesbians the men’s uniforms. Lord knows what the transvestite uniforms will look like.
Then, he gets his panties in a wad when he fails tho get only the most reasoned and serious comments in response.
Thanks for the humor, Corporal Scout.

Must be extremely difficult for evidently a few on here to be living in a Christian country where the overwhelming majority are believers.

you might have everlasting life in Heaven if you only shall believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins.
What in the world does “belief” have to do with anything?? The last time I checked, belief has nothing to do with either Physics or Biology.

We were told severa years ago by the America haters and Democrats (oops, redundant) that gas prices are the president’s responsibility. Your Idiot Messiah Obozo owns it now. What is he doing to bring them down?
Idiot Messiah: Do-nothing on regressive gas prices. Women and minorities hardest hit.
