Top Republican leaders have begun a belated effort to squash the birther theory that threatens to define their party as a bunch of lunatics, at least among those many Americans who don’t share the obsessions of the GOP base.
But I have no sympathy, because they brought this on themselves.
As far back as the 2008 campaign, the core of the Republican marketing strategy has been to discredit Barack Obama by depicting him as the much-feared “other” — an unAmerican, even anti-American, Muslim, anti-colonial socialist Kenyan, etc. The notion never really penetrated the general population, but among much of the GOP base it has grown into an article of faith, as much a sign of Republican fealty as a no-tax pledge and the adoration of Ronald Reagan. From its humble beginnings in the fertile imaginations of Orly Taitz and others, it has become the GOP’s Frankenstein, a monstrous creation that they no longer control and in fact now fear.
It has, for example, given them a nightmare called Donald Trump, who has used the birther issue to rise to near-frontrunner status among potential GOP presidential candidates. But remember, Trump did not create that sentiment; opportunist that he is, he merely tapped into what was already there. In fact, by saying outright what other GOP candidates had been coyly suggesting or hinting at, he kind of gave the game away. He made explicit what the party establishment had tried to keep implicit, and by doing so forced them to finally confront it.
But it may be too late. Just this week, a New York Times poll found that 45 percent of Republican voters profess to believe that Obama was born elsewhere; only 33 percent would admit the truth, that he was born in Hawaii. (A Fox News poll earlier this month showed similar numbers).
In Arizona, the arch-conservative governor, Jan Brewer, was forced to veto a bill this week that would have required Obama to produce his “long-form” birth certificate to get on that state’s ballot in 2012. The bill had passed the Arizona House 40-18 and the Senate 20-9.
In Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal has announced he will sign such a bill if it reaches his desk. Oklahoma is about to pass such a law as well.
And here in Georgia, of course, state Rep. Mark Hatfield initially enlisted a majority of his House colleagues to sign on as cosponsors of a birther bill until saner heads prevailed. But Hatfield hasn’t given up:
“If one state passes, and the Obama administration basically ignores the requirement and does not qualify for the ballot in that state, that would send a very strong signal that we have a situation in the United States where someone who is not eligible is occupying the White House,” the Waycross Republican said this week, noting that “other states, including Georgia, have a duty to step up.” Such legislation is guaranteed to keep the issue in the political spotlight.
The point man for the GOP establishment’s effort to repudiate its illegitimate offspring has been Karl Rove, which itself is telling. Rove doesn’t have to run for anything, and he risks nothing with his unequivocal repudiation of birtherism. But party figures, including presidential hopefuls, who are dependent on the GOP base for votes don’t dare to be so blunt about the ridiculous nature of the charge.
Rove, in fact, has even tried to suggest that the whole thing is some plot against the GOP concocted by the White House, which would be very cool if true. Alas, it is not. Others on the right have demanded that the president save them from themselves by doing something, anything, that would end the debate. But why? If your opposition is self-destructing, why on earth would you come to their rescue?
Besides, nothing Obama could say or do would end this thing, as political scientist David Redlawsk of Rutgers University explains:
“The reality is that “facts” are unlikely to mean much to those who believe in their gut that Obama is not American. Political psychologists call this “motivated reasoning.” It goes something like this: I dislike someone; I learn something positive that should make me feel better about him; instead, I dislike him as much or even more. This is clearly irrational, but our feelings about people are complicated, and we tend to hold on to them even in the face of contradictory information. This is not unique to those who dislike Obama.
We are all somewhat impervious to new information, preferring the beliefs in which we are already invested. We often ignore new contradictory information, actively argue against it or discount its source, all in an effort to maintain existing evaluations. Reasoning away contradictions this way is psychologically easier than revising our feelings. In this sense, our emotions color how we perceive “facts.”….
In the case of President Obama, people who already dislike him at a gut level have little motivation to revise their beliefs, whether about his place of birth or, as we have found in other research, the persisting belief that he is Muslim. It’s not the evidence that matters. Feelings come first, and evidence is used mostly in service of those feelings. Evidence that supports what is already believed is accepted, that which contradicts it is not.
So the smart bet is that the birthplace issue, the Muslim issue, and any other ways in which Obama can be portrayed as outside the mainstream are not going away. And no amount of data to the contrary will change that for some people. The simple reality is people feel before they think. And when those feelings are strong enough, facts take a back seat.”
Having created a political movement around such “motivated reasoning” in which emotion substitutes for fact, the masterminds of the GOP now have to deal with its consequences.
It’s downright entertaining, don’t you think?

A pundit once said something to the effect that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people. Nowhere is this more true than in today’s politics. Republicans know this birther issue is nonsense. They also know their base has dumbed down to the point where they will believe almost anything they are told. 1. The index dated is posted on Hawaii’s websites and consists of name and sex of registrant. It is public information. This index is available for inspection.
The past Health Director of the State has stated that the Director (fukino) has 2x personally inspected and verifiied the original vital records maintined by the state and has stated that Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born citizen. Obama has posted the only form of certificate (Seciton 2,4(B) of applicable admin rules) that the State of Hawaii issues and it meets the requirement of law for a US Passport and for any legal purpose. It names his parents, place of birth, has official raised seal of office, signature of registrar, and seal of state. The release of the “long form” is not permitted. NOT even to Obama.

Birthers no longer need to be ignorant of the facts. This info has been available for some time.

I think you make too much of the Birthers and the problem they pose for the GOP, misguided though they are. Now here are some problems for Obama, courtesy of today’s NYT/CBS poll:
Just 27 percent of Americans support raising the debt limit, while 63 percent oppose raising it. Obama has a 38 percent approval rating on handling the economy and a 33 percent approval rating on handling the budget deficit. Seventy percent of Americans say the country is on the wrong track — the highest percentage since Obama first took office. Just 26 percent say it is headed in the right direction. Only 19 percent say the economy is in good condition, while 80 percent say it is in bad condition.

Another one of Jay’s desperation topics. Here’s Obama’s approval rating continuing to fall and Jay try’s to divert attention to the birth issue. There’s been a lot of mystery surrounding Obama not least of which is his stubborn refusal to release his long form birth certificate. His place of birth, however, is not the key concern among Independents, Republicans as well as some Democrats because over the 2 plus years of the Obama presidency it’s become clear that this is a man whose simply not suited for the job he holds. Attempting to paint the GOP as radical lunatics is just an immature, desperate and futile attempt at diverting attention away from Obama’s failures. It’s time to get this country back on track. Obama and the Democratic party haven’t shown the American public that they’re capable of doing so.

So, just out of curiosity, why is everyone that even questions anything about Obama immediately portrayed as “crazy” by the media and others that support him? Not just on the birth certificate issue, but on most other issues as well. I personally believe that he has a birth certificate that says he was born in the US, I just think he finds it entertaining to let everyone question it and fight about it. But why is everyone crazy that questions this or any other issue? Is it because the people defending him have nothing of substance to use to defend him, so instead they must portray the accusers of being crazy, and anyone who even thinks about it then has to wonder if they are crazy as well? Can someone please explain this to me? I’m being serious by the way – I do want a real explanation from somebody on that side of the isle.

You’re right! I will NOT believe anything until I see something. Of course, even if I see something, I’ll take it under consideration of all the evidence and then make a decision.
But for now, it’s just sad watching state governments around the country try to pass legislation focused on this one issue. The Republicans evidently can’t use regular arguments against Obama, so they just try to make him ineligible to run. Pretty sad, really.

Bosch – I don’t typically refer to him as a socialist, and I would bet that the people that do don’t fully understand the term and political/economical meanings behind it. Personally, I would call him an economic fascist, and there are plenty of things he has done to earn that title. To be fair, by the time he left office, I would have called Bush the same thing.
Also, people do criticize him on policy issues, but they are still portrayed as crazy simply because they criticize him. That’s what I’m trying to figure out. Why must I be crazy, just because I ask questions or don’t agree?

The concern I have with these “birther bills” is that they will give a state elections official the right to deny any candidate they want from getting on their ballots. Birth certificates are issued by states and they don’t all look alike. I can see it now: A state official in Louisiana says “maybe that’s what they issue in Hawaii (or New York or Massachusetts), but that’s not what we issue in Louisiana. Denied”. Jindal better be careful what he signs. He doesn’t look like every president before Obama either.

Bosch – I don’t know the answer to that for sure, but I do know that McCain was forced to prove he was born in the US by showing his birth certificate during the election. It was done publicly enough that the issue was dropped and no one brought it up again after.
And Bush’s ANG records were public, and people like Alex Jones are truly crazy. There is a difference between those who think the government is out to get them period, and those who want answers to simple questions that shouldn’t be real issues.

I heard this was part of the Arizona bill, but is this a feature on all of the bills? Otherwise, doesn’t the state election official already have the right to deny unqualified candidates?
I know that here in Georgia, there’s that rule that people serving have to live in whatever region they are supposed to cover, and headlines over the past couple of years have hammered a few candidates who lived elsewhere.

Thanks for that stroll down memory lane, AmVet. You know what strikes me on looking at that clip again is the smile Bentsen directs at the hapless fuming Quayle. It’s like the knowing smile of a teacher to a brat pupil who’s just been smacked down and seems to say: “and you know I’m right!”
On a more somber note, the ease with which Bentsen delivers that devastating smackdown by merely invoking the name of a previous and fondly remembered Democratic president prompts me to wonder whether such a moment would even be possible today. That was a high water mark for liberalism and the mere mention of a Democratic icon (or in this case, the invoking of the quasi-sacred status of such a figure) was enough to virtually destroy an opponent. I doubt such a gesture would be possible today, 23 yrs later.

It’s obviously a silly topic to any thinking individual. President Obama doesn’t need to release his long form birth certificate for a few reasons:
1. The State of Hawaii has already confirmed, multiple times, that he was born there and has provided electronic documentation demonstrating such. (I believe someone made the link available earlier in the discussion).
2. The President, any President, should not have to stoop to the level of paranoid conspiracy theorists. President (W.) Bush didn’t give the extreme far-left any of his time when there were claims that his White House had something to do with 9/11…because it was crazy nonsense that no thinking person gave any credence to.
3. It keeps the Right, or a significant portion of the political Right, occupied and looking dumb in the eyes of the majority of Americans.
So, keep debating a pointless issue. Obviously, neither major political party has all of the answers to all of the questions. Our society would be a much better place, or, at the very least, on the path to a better place, if we could abandon strict adherence to the “party line” and give each issue the care it deserves.

The crazier the Rs look the better for the Dems. Most R’s are going to vote against him in ‘12 anyway. Most Dems will vote for him. So it’s the independents he is going to worry about. That said, if 50% of independents think he was born somewhere else, then he has a problem

Jay; It’s time that some entity in the Federal Government takes the responsibility to adequately vette all candidates for President as the Constitution requires. The documents that Obummer has given would not pass acceptance for a lot of things that you would have to pass with your birth certificate (ie: Passport, Social Security, Medicare, Military service, Security Clearance, Drivers License, etc.) Just because one gives you an official looking document does not make it true. Illegal immigrants do this everyday with forged documents or Social Security cards. Please wake up and smell the coffee.

Hi UGA, I’m familiar with the clause, but have little recollection of it having to do with McCain. He was a Senator for how many years? I heard he was born in Panama, but to military parents. It’s a non-issue in my book (for McCain) and I guess that’s why I didn’t pay attention to that, and it died down quick so evidently not many others paid attention to it either.
I remember hearing about it AFTER the birthers questioned Obama. So I questioned the timing, not the fact that there were questions about McCain’s birthplace and presidential potential.

I really hope that the left’s plan for the next election is to frame the GOP as radicals because some percentage thinks the POTUS was not born in this country, instead of focusing on the +9% unemployment figure, the 3 wars that we shouldn’t be fighting, why we aren’t tapping our own fuel sources, cutting spending, and reforming entitlements.

I’ll go ahead and say it was my lack of paying attention at the time to see “which came first”.
Now, the McCain question died down and there is no issue or doubt about his eligibility. For SOME reason, the same cannot be said about Obama and the people who don’t think he was born in Hawaii.

I would be more concerned with his Muslim upbringing and he’s known associations with far-left radicals than I would be his actual birth place. A real test of whether or not Republicans will field a candidate capable of winning the Nov election will be the Party’s treatment of Romney. His opponents may lay off the religion issue. They may even grudgingly accept the notion that they’re supposed to believe states should run their own affairs (the health care thing) and that governors should be responsive to their constituents. But if they all turn on him over his denunciation of birther conspiracies, then Obama’s on his way to another four years.

According to the Director of Health in Hawaii, he does have a birth certificate. But, birth certificates are not released to the public in Hawaii–only certificates of live birth. Read my post at 1:41. Also, two independent Hawaiian newspapers have birth announcements of Barack Obama when he was born. So, I suppose this conspiracy dates back to 1961 and we can add 2 local newspapers to the list of conspirators.

We know he showed his short form. Nobody is arguing that. Stop telling us he showed his short form birth certificate.
The long form birth certificate, the one that says what hospital he was born in and the name of the attending physician, etc. is being hidden for some completely unknown reason. What don’t you understand about Hawaiian law prohibits the public release of birth certificates accept when legislated by the courts with probable cause! NO person born in Hawaii can request a copy of his or her birth certificate and get anything but a certificate of live birth.

Republicans want their imagination of the truth so bad, they will believe any concoction that comes along to support it. Take taxes for example.
With great bravado, the Journal claims that even the income of the top 10% of the taxpayers wouldn’t close the deficit. The top 10% reported $3,856 billion in AGI, equal to 46% of total reported income in the United States, almost 27 percent of GDP. On that, they paid $721 billion in personal federal income taxes, or an average of 18.7% of income. If the remaining 81% of income were paid in federal income taxes, the increment in tax revenues would be more than $3,100 billion, or roughly 21% of GDP. The budget deficit would obviously be closed many times over.
Yet, the cons on this blog were all over that yarn like flies on… well, you know.

Up to this point, all Presidents/Presidential candidates have basically been assumed to have followed the Constitutional requirements:
“No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”
Until President Obama, there has been no minority candidate that has gotten this far in the process; because of a funny name, skin color, and hysteria…..the birthers are born!! Note: no Caucasian President/Presidential candidate has had to PROVE his citizenship!!

That’s not my understanding. My understanding is that he has not released the full birth certificate or didn’t release it at all. I could be mistaken though since I really don’t follow the issue. Personally I don’t care since I believe he was born here and that this is a waste of time. I would just like him to release or re release the full info just so that we can all move on from this nonsense.

Your understanding is wrong. Go read Hawaii’s privacy laws. He has released the only copy currently obtainable from the government. He can personally go inspect the original, but inspecting it certainly is not the same as publicly displaying it. If it bothers you so much, focus on changing Hawaii’s law they implemented in 2000.

I don’t know what’s more horrifying about that McDonald’s video- the fact that all the male employees just stood by and watched the whole thing or the half hearted attempt by the manager to stop it or the pure savagery of the beating. The most gutwrenching part was watching the beaten girl go into convulsions at the end of the beating. I would be willing to bet the employees were too stupid to take down a description of the car or the car tag that the 2 women fled in.

Most companies now require a copy for their records to be employed in this country – why not the Commander in Chief? Steeply progressive income tax rates don’t punish people who already have wealth. Rather, they leave currently working people with only enough to live on, and not enough to invest in wealth creation. Ergo, if you haven’t already accumulated wealth, you likely never will.
High taxes also stifle business investment and job creation. I know you don’t believe that, but, like the law of gravity, the laws of economics exist independantly of your ability tp understand and/or believe.

He was not “mis-treated,” he just did not win re-election, mostly due to loses that occurred during his term. It was not ever a racial issue, so don’t make it one. Regarding the questions about Obama, there have been questions before about where certain people were born, but you would have to be a student of history to accept this. (Look up Hamilton.) Besides, Obama is the first where serious issues have been raised, and with good reason – he grew up outside the US, one of his parents was not American, and there are serious documentation issues in the US, Phillipines and Kenya that cast a big doubt on the location of his birth. Sorry, but it is true. Forgive me for even asking the question.

The question is why would he spend so much money to do this?
The president who campaigned for a more “open government” and “full disclosure” will not unseal his medical records, his school records, his birth records or his passport records. He will not release his Harvard records, his Columbia College records, or his Occidental College records—he will not even release his Columbia College thesis. All his legislative records from the Illinois State Senate are missing and he claims his scheduling records during those State Senate years are lost as well. In addition, no one can find his school records for the elite K-12 college prep school, Punahou School, he attended in Hawaii.
What is he hiding? Well, for starters, some of these records will shed light on his citizenship and birth. Why can’t Mr. Soreto share this information? I think his father is Frank Marshal Davis. If his father his Mr. Obama, then Mr. President is not constitutionally qualified to be POTUS.
For example, Obama’s application to Punahou School – now mysteriously missing – would likely contain a birth certificate. His Occidental College records are important as they may show he attended there as a foreign exchange student.” Indeed, Obama used his Indonesian name “Barry Soetoro” while attending Occidental.
Furthermore, now that at least three document authentication experts have declared the scanned “Certificate of Live Birth” Obama’s campaign team gave to a pro-Obama website to be an obvious phony; we know that he is hiding something here as well.

For someone who got into office on claims that he’d operate the “most transparent administration ever,” he’s sure making the old KGB look as leak-proof as a submarine with screen doors. Such a professional operation, sealing and/or altering all of those records…how could little old Barry have done that himself, the same guy who can’t even break 37 bowling? I check an enclave a couple miles from where I live. Those house prices equate to top 3%. Easy. Half a dozen foreclosures.
I’ve seen just as many cases of poor money management among that tier as among a middle income or lower income tier. In fact, I’ve seen a number of instances of lower relative debt amongst households with much, much, much lower incomes than the top 3%.

That’s actually incorrect. Look up citizenship requirements. One citizen plus one noncitizen, the citizen has to have lived at least 5 years within the United States after their 14th birthday. So by the birthers’ logic, she would have been giving birth in Kenya having not met that requirement.
Don’t get me wrong, this whole thing is a nonissue. He was born here, the proof is crystal clear. But your point there is off base.

In August, 2008, just two months before the election, the Democrat Party of Hawaii’s (DPH) chairman, Brian Schatz, had already refused to include legally required, explicit language in its sworn Official Certification of Nomination (OCON) that Barack Obama was qualified to serve as President under the provisions of the U.S. Constitution. Former DPH Chair, Brian Schatz, now serves as Hawaii’s Lt. Governor under Gov. Neil Abercrombie (2010). As DPH Chair, Schatz authored the state’s Democrat Party OCON for Obama without including legally required language stating that Obama was constitutionally eligible to serve as president. Schatz won the Lt. Gov. seat by a wide margin after two years of remaining silent about his OCON controversy. Ultimately, the DPH’s rejection of Obama was due to a refusal by Obama to make available the original documented evidence confirming his eligibility. However, this justifiable lack of certification by the DPH was followed by a covert attempt by the Democratic National Committee, chaired by Nancy Pelosi, to artificially proclaim Obama eligible in Hawaii by submitting two separate, sworn Official Certifications of Nomination (OCON) for Obama, each containing different legal language. Both versions of the OCON were sent to the Hawaiian Office of Elections while only one version was submitted to other states’ Election authorities. The DNC’s fraudulent OCON was an obvious, desperate attempt to control damage and prevent Obama from being disqualified from the Hawaiian ballot and prevent public awareness of the DPH’s refusal to certify Obama’s eligibility. The Official Certification of Nomination is a legally required document submitted by each party’s state and national authority to every state elections committee authority prior to each election. It affords the Chief Elections Officer in each state with the documented legal assurance that the candidates seeking inclusion on their state’s ballot are indeed certified as constitutionally eligible to serve the office they seek.
Unfortunately, the violation committed by the DNC’s falsified certification is that there was no evidence to support claims of Obama’s eligibility. The DNC simply fabricated reasons over the authority of the state party authority in order to force Obama’s candidacy onto the Hawaiian presidential ballot. Of course, Democrats claim there was no impropriety on the part of Pelosi and the DNC. However, they have failed to explain why the state party authority refused to certify Obama, due to his lack of legal qualifications, while the national party authority simply certified Obama, ignoring that same lack of legal qualifications. The lack of accountability makes the Democrat Party appear pathetically disreputable. The DNC is not served by the multiple state party authorities, it is there to serve the state party authorities. Federal constitutional law prescribes the mandates for Presidential eligibility, but state authorities have the responsibility for validating candidate authenticity for their own ballot.
QUESTIONS THE MEDIA FAILED TO ASK

After the DNC submitted a customized OCON, allegedly on August 28th, why did Schatz refuse to inquire to the DNC or request from the DNC the evidence used by the DNC to determine Obama’s eligibility in Hawaii?

Are we supposed to believe that the DNC, in Denver, almost 4000 miles away, had acquired documented proof from the state of Hawaii to legally approve Obama’s eligibility, yet the state party authority, whose headquarters is within walking distance from the State of Hawaii records and elections offices, was somehow not able to obtain this evidence before the DNC?

Moreover, after the DNC submitted their OCON, allegedly with seven full days remaining in the filing deadline, why was the DPH not able to simply revise their OCON to include the legal language after reviewing the evidence used by the DNC to certify Obama’s eligibility?

I’ve just been looking in the Constitution and I don’t see anything about living in the US for 5 years after the age of 14. Where does that occur? All the Consititution says about citizenship as refers to the President it this:
“No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”
And Harry, there are NO amendments that address citizenship and the office of the President.

In a 2008 article published by the Michigan Law Review Lawrence Solum, Professor of Law at the University of Illinois, stated that “[t]here is general agreement on the core of [the] meaning [of the Presidential Eligibility Clause]. Anyone born on American soil whose parents are citizens of the United States is a ‘natural born citizen’”. In April 2010 Solum republished the same article as an online draft, in which he changed his opinion on the meaning of natural born citizen to include persons born in the United States of one American citizen parent. In a footnote he explained that “[b]ased on my reading of the historical sources, there is no credible case that a person born on American soil with one American parent was clearly not a ‘natural born citizen.’” He further extended natural born citizenship to all cases of jus soli as the “conventional view”.

Let’s see, jay…it was Phillip J. Berg (D) who first questioned Obama’s citizenship status in 2008. Went so far as to file a suit declaring him ineligible to hold office. Orly’s “activism” didn’t take place until 2009.
The same Phillip Berg, in 2001, demanded the disbarment of several Supreme Court Justices claiming that they stole the election from Al Gore. There was his suit on behalf of a WTC worker…in that one he leveled accusations that 9/11 was perpetrated by the Bush Administration. Then there was the challenge he filed against George W. Bush for launching an unjust and illegal war without Congress’s approval.

Who is a natural-born citizen? Who, in other words, is a citizen at birth, such that that person can be a President someday?
The 14th Amendment defines citizenship this way: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” But even this does not get specific enough. As usual, the Constitution provides the framework for the law, but it is the law that fills in the gaps. The Constitution authorizes the Congress to do create clarifying legislation in Section 5 of the 14th Amendment; the Constitution, in Article 1, Section 8, Clause 4, also allows the Congress to create law regarding naturalization, which includes citizenship.
Currently, Title 8 of the U.S. Code fills in the gaps left by the Constitution. Section 1401 defines the following as people who are “citizens of the United States at birth:”
· Anyone born inside the United States *
· Any Indian or Eskimo born in the United States, provided being a citizen of the U.S. does not impair the person’s status as a citizen of the tribe
· Any one born outside the United States, both of whose parents are citizens of the U.S., as long as one parent has lived in the U.S.
· Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year and the other parent is a U.S. national

However that does not make it WRONG to require a Birth Certificate to get on a ballot. Jan Brewer vetoed the Arizona law because it overeached with the types of alternative ID and just who and how the alternatives would be approved. How any American citizen can be upset or laugh about requiring a Birth Certificate to get elected president is just nuts. You have to have a Birth Certificate to play youth sports, you used to have to have one to get a Driver’s License, or a Social Security card. Only people arguing will be those who are not capable of comprehending the laws of the US. There’s two basic scenarios at play with his citizenship. Either he was born in the US or he was not.
Option 1: He was born in the US.
Jus Soli dictates he’s a US citizen based on being born on US soil. Case dismissed.
Option 2: He was born outside the US.
One has to look at the Immigration and Naturalization Act as it was in effect when he was born. People try to use the fact that Obama’s parents were married prior to his birth, which would mean that he was actually born IN wedlock. Sounds sensible, but it is wrong. Legally speaking, that marriage was null and void because Obama Sr had not divorced his wife that was back in Kenya. That would mean you would use Naturalization Chart #2 to determine his citizenship.

Based on that knowledge, his mother only needs one year of presence in the US or a possession for Barack to be a US citizen at birth. Case closed.

I’ve read of situations where people have had to get re-married to acknowledge or legitimate a child. If it’s a state-recognized marriage, the US recognizes it as well. One would have to dissolve that other marriage for a US marriage to be valid.

Once I see a convincing piece of evidence that Obama was NOT born in Hawaii, I will change my stance. Until then, the ONLY convincing evidence is the document provided by the State of Hawaii. And it’s pretty solid evidence. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone can provide better proof than a state document (which can be used to get a passport, license, or other legal documents)

Recently on a TV program, the Queen of the Birther movement, Michelle Bachmann of Minn. agreed with George Stephanopoulos after he showed The Queen Birther, a copy of Obama’s certificate of live birth (his birth certificate) that yes it was settled, he was a Citizen of these United States. Only the bubble heads(lunatic fringe) believe he is not a Citizen, which is most of the republicans according to the polls. Maybe Michelle Bachmann has finally seen the folly of continuing with this birther lunacy..just maybe she finally figured out how absolutely ignorant she really looked, while spouting these out and out fantasies..about Obama. Its obvious that Gm has reading comprehension problems. He stated half of all white people are on Medicare. Not quite because not half of white people are 65 or older. Now as a % of medicare recipients that would be a correct statement. since whites comprise the majority of the population. But that is not what Gm said. He said half of all white people are on Medicare which is not possible.
Secondly he said the same about Medicaid. Half of all white people are not on Medicaid. Now if he meant as a % of medicaid recipients he’s still wrong. Whites comprise 38% of all welfare recipients, blacks 37%, hispanics roughly 20%, and the rest are smaller minorities. Clearly the man does not understand how to read statistics- nor how to spell. Now even though whites comprise 1% more of the welfare recipients than blacks its also important to remember that there are 6 1/2 times as many whites as blacks. So as a % of their population the white numbers are much lower. Somehow I don’t think Gm is smart enough to understand these statistics.

Who is a natural-born citizen? Who, in other words, is a citizen at birth, such that that person can be a President someday?
The 14th Amendment defines citizenship this way: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” But even this does not get specific enough. As usual, the Constitution provides the framework for the law, but it is the law that fills in the gaps. The Constitution authorizes the Congress to do create clarifying legislation in Section 5 of the 14th Amendment; the Constitution, in Article 1, Section 8, Clause 4, also allows the Congress to create law regarding naturalization, which includes citizenship.
Currently, Title 8 of the U.S. Code fills in the gaps left by the Constitution. Section 1401 defines the following as people who are “citizens of the United States at birth:”
· Anyone born inside the United States *
· Any Indian or Eskimo born in the United States, provided being a citizen of the U.S. does not impair the person’s status as a citizen of the tribe
· Any one born outside the United States, both of whose parents are citizens of the U.S., as long as one parent has lived in the U.S.
· Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year and the other parent is a U.S. national
· Any one born in a U.S. possession, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year

I just always assumed that in order to meet the requirement of American born, you had to prove that when you registered as a candidate. I would assume this applies to any elected position that has American citizenship as a requirement. I find it impossible to believe that you could actually run for and win the highest office of this nation without having to meet that requirement to some sort of regulatory body as a condition of running. Anybody have clarifying info?

Doom….yeah the NTSB said design flaw because the gussett plate s were undersized and fractured and weight limits had been raised. The bridge had also been listed given a structurally deficient ratings several times (and at the time of collapse) and had a 50 out of 100 ratingm (only 4% of 100,000 bridges scored below 50). The 50 rating indicated it should have been replaced.
So yes it collapse from lack of repair to the gussets. Deterioration (evidenced by its rating) and from its under design for current condition. It should have been replaced as many of our bridges and other infrastructure needs to be replaced.
So the question for you is to repeat back your childish name calling Doomy, “are you stupid”? The only answer that is available is yes. We have a serious infrastructure problem in this country. Don’t you have a rock to crawl under child?

Hawaii has only issued certificates of live birth since 2001. Your attempted semantic argument is meaningless. They have the original birth certificates on record, and issue certified copies, which is exactly what has been shown. Since he was born in 1961, there would have been his parents would have been giving an exact duplicate as was the practice then, but people lose those all the time. I only have a certified copy, as do millions of other Americans. So again, Obama’s certified copy of his birth certificate can be used in any scenario requiring a birth certificate to be provided. Sounds like a birth certificate to me. In the future, it’s best to just use phrases like original and copy, fyi.

A note to those of you uninformed Democrats who insist Bush got us into two illegal wars. Both the United States House of Representatives and the United Sates Senate authorized and funded both wars in compliance with of the War Powers Act. This was and is unlike Obama’s War in Libya which has neither approval of Congress nor authorized funding and is in fact a violation of our Constitution which should be an impeachable offense. Personnaly I think George Bush made a mistake in Iraq by staying there after Saddam Hussein was toppled and he should never have gone into Afghanastan at all but the Democrats were insisting on it at the time. The Democrats now deny there involvement. I think Obama was correct prior to his election about getting out of both now. That thought comes from a proud right wing conservative.

I have slight disagreements with part of that, but I’m in agreement with you on Obama’s statement about getting out of both.
I think Afghanistan was justified, but not justified to be a 10 year campaign. We knew AQ was behind 9/11. We could have used recon and satellite scans to locate their training camps in no-mans land. Once all camps were located and documented, 3 solid days of B-52 bombing runs with Tomahawk intermissions could have taken out all their training camps without putting a boot on the ground. A quick, decisive punch to the mouth is the fastest way to get someone’s attention when they’re trying to provoke you.
As far as Iraq, I think that’s the one that we should have never been involved in. Hussein was our stopper to keep the drain plugged in that area. Well, actually, he was one of many chess pieces we had over there. As a footnote, I wouldn’t have gotten involved in Libya either.

Doggone/GA-Did as you suggested-there are some compelling arguments about “other” people seeing the Birth Certificate so I understand where you are coming from. I have also seen a internet copy purported to be authentic but without certification. I still wonder why He won’t release a “certified” copy. I would suggest you read Snopes account paying particular attention to the “story” of the lady who thirty years later remembers in detail the specifics of a conversation she had about Obama’s birth and even made a note of the baby’s name on a napkin, and she remembers the name of the resturant she was in at the time. Now most of us remember where we were when JFK was shot, or on 9/11 But this lady remembers specific details of the birth of a obscure not yet famous infant claiming to be a friend of the mother. How many of you can remember the details of the birth of an infant in your own family 30 years after the fact. That is nothing but a bunch of BS and it makes a skeptic like me wonder why such a concoction is neccessary. Also, talking about internet copies, there is one floating around that shows him being born in Kenya. I don’t put any stock in that either. All of this could be cleared up by just producing a “certified” copy with a real doctors signature on the line that says “delivered by.” It defies credulity to think the Obama people are spending so much time hiding something that doesn’t need hiding.

Unlike the Georgia bill that set a standard that Georgia’s birth certificate form could meet, Louisiana’s proposed birther bill requires a standard that their current form doesn’t meet.
Here’s a copy of a recent Louisiana certificate birth certificate that was released by a candidate for Congress from the state:

Here’s the requirements for Pres/VP/Congressional candidates to have submitted before their names can appear on the ballot in Louisiana under HB 561. The same text is present five times for different offices/election periods in the bill:

The Louisiana “Certificate of Live Birth” does list the date and place of birth, as well as the name of the hospital. However, it doesn’t list the attendant (could be a nurse or midwife I would think) and as a computer-generated abstract it doesn’t reproduce any original signatures. They’re deliberately targeting Obama because all he can produce is a Hawaii form. However, if this goes into law, they’re stabbing the backs of current and prospective members of Congress and Presidential/VP candidates born in the state of Louisiana. They’re apparently so eager to keep Obama off the ballot that the looked at what wasn’t in the Hawaii birth certificate form which they could target, that they didn’t stop and think what a Louisiana form looked like. There’s been some speculation that some out of state birther drafted the bill and the bill sponsors simply attached their names without looking closely at the text.

Nope. This was the same argument Bill Clinton tried to use, and it didn’t fly then, either. Congress *didn’t* authorize our involvement in Used-To-Be-Slavia, but it *did* authorize funding. President Clinton (for whom I did not vote, BTW) tried to claim that the funding constituted IMPLICIT authorization on the grounds that Congress certainly wouldn’t fund military actions it didn’t approve of, but that is NOT what the War Powers Resolution says. Congress is *required* to EXPLICITLY authorize military actions over 90 days in length, and that did not happen in Kosovo, Iraq or Afghanistan. Technically, all three were violations of the War Powers Resolution and therefore illegal.

You need to READ the War Powers Resolution, because you are misrepresenting what it says. I personally don’t agree with our involvement in Libya, but the fact is that Presidents can send our military into action for up to 90 days WITHOUT Congressional approval. Anything OVER 90 days, though, REQUIRES Congressional authorization. If we’re not out of there by mid-June, come see me again. But between now and then, maybe you could actually READ what the thing says.

I hadn’t yet left the GOP at the time, but it seemed to me that OBL admitted to 9/11 and to being in Afghanistan, and that the Taliban said he was there and they weren’t giving him up. For that reason, IMO we should have gone into Afghanistan in force and gotten OBL dead or alive.
IMO there was no reason for going into Iraq, and doing so just spread us too thin. Saddam Hussein didn’t have WMDs and the claimed evidence was just a load of bulldada. Besides, if we’re going to take out dictators with WMD, there’s a loonytune in North Korea who fits the bill PERFECTLY, yet we’re sitting down with him and talking things out.

He’s not hiding anything; the State of Hawaii simply doesn’t release it and he can’t authorize them to, because it’s against state law.
The head of the state records department and (former) Governor Lingle both viewed the original, and both have verified and vouched for its authenticity. And given that Gov. Lingle is a Republican (she was Mayor of Maui County when I lived out there), I think she’d have said something if there was anything fishy about it.
The good people of Hawaii don’t like outsiders telling them what to do and how to run their state any more than the good people of Georgia do, so the Hawaii Legislature actually passed a law permitting the state records department to IGNORE repeated and harassing demands for any state records. So not only does Hawaii not have to release the certificate (because that’s been state law since HI was a state), it now doesn’t even have to respond to you if you call or write or fax and ask for a copy.
There’s nothing to clear up here. Just as your GA drivers’ license is good in HI because GA says it is, the President’s HI birth certificate is good in every other state just because HI says it is.
Full Faith and Credit Clause. Learn it, love it.
