Top Republican leaders have begun a belated effort to squash the birther theory that threatens to define their party as a bunch of lunatics, at least among those many Americans who don’t share the obsessions of the GOP base.
But I have no sympathy, because they brought this on themselves.
As far back as the 2008 campaign, the core of the Republican marketing strategy has been to discredit Barack Obama by depicting him as the much-feared “other” — an unAmerican, even anti-American, Muslim, anti-colonial socialist Kenyan, etc. The notion never really penetrated the general population, but among much of the GOP base it has grown into an article of faith, as much a sign of Republican fealty as a no-tax pledge and the adoration of Ronald Reagan. From its humble beginnings in the fertile imaginations of Orly Taitz and others, it has become the GOP’s Frankenstein, a monstrous creation that they no longer control and in fact now fear.
It has, for example, given them a nightmare called Donald Trump, who has used the birther issue to rise to near-frontrunner status among potential GOP presidential candidates. But remember, Trump did not create that sentiment; opportunist that he is, he merely tapped into what was already there. In fact, by saying outright what other GOP candidates had been coyly suggesting or hinting at, he kind of gave the game away. He made explicit what the party establishment had tried to keep implicit, and by doing so forced them to finally confront it.
But it may be too late. Just this week, a New York Times poll found that 45 percent of Republican voters profess to believe that Obama was born elsewhere; only 33 percent would admit the truth, that he was born in Hawaii. (A Fox News poll earlier this month showed similar numbers).
In Arizona, the arch-conservative governor, Jan Brewer, was forced to veto a bill this week that would have required Obama to produce his “long-form” birth certificate to get on that state’s ballot in 2012. The bill had passed the Arizona House 40-18 and the Senate 20-9.
In Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal has announced he will sign such a bill if it reaches his desk. Oklahoma is about to pass such a law as well.
And here in Georgia, of course, state Rep. Mark Hatfield initially enlisted a majority of his House colleagues to sign on as cosponsors of a birther bill until saner heads prevailed. But Hatfield hasn’t given up:
“If one state passes, and the Obama administration basically ignores the requirement and does not qualify for the ballot in that state, that would send a very strong signal that we have a situation in the United States where someone who is not eligible is occupying the White House,” the Waycross Republican said this week, noting that “other states, including Georgia, have a duty to step up.” Such legislation is guaranteed to keep the issue in the political spotlight.
The point man for the GOP establishment’s effort to repudiate its illegitimate offspring has been Karl Rove, which itself is telling. Rove doesn’t have to run for anything, and he risks nothing with his unequivocal repudiation of birtherism. But party figures, including presidential hopefuls, who are dependent on the GOP base for votes don’t dare to be so blunt about the ridiculous nature of the charge.
Rove, in fact, has even tried to suggest that the whole thing is some plot against the GOP concocted by the White House, which would be very cool if true. Alas, it is not. Others on the right have demanded that the president save them from themselves by doing something, anything, that would end the debate. But why? If your opposition is self-destructing, why on earth would you come to their rescue?
Besides, nothing Obama could say or do would end this thing, as political scientist David Redlawsk of Rutgers University explains:
“The reality is that “facts” are unlikely to mean much to those who believe in their gut that Obama is not American. Political psychologists call this “motivated reasoning.” It goes something like this: I dislike someone; I learn something positive that should make me feel better about him; instead, I dislike him as much or even more. This is clearly irrational, but our feelings about people are complicated, and we tend to hold on to them even in the face of contradictory information. This is not unique to those who dislike Obama.
We are all somewhat impervious to new information, preferring the beliefs in which we are already invested. We often ignore new contradictory information, actively argue against it or discount its source, all in an effort to maintain existing evaluations. Reasoning away contradictions this way is psychologically easier than revising our feelings. In this sense, our emotions color how we perceive “facts.”….
In the case of President Obama, people who already dislike him at a gut level have little motivation to revise their beliefs, whether about his place of birth or, as we have found in other research, the persisting belief that he is Muslim. It’s not the evidence that matters. Feelings come first, and evidence is used mostly in service of those feelings. Evidence that supports what is already believed is accepted, that which contradicts it is not.
So the smart bet is that the birthplace issue, the Muslim issue, and any other ways in which Obama can be portrayed as outside the mainstream are not going away. And no amount of data to the contrary will change that for some people. The simple reality is people feel before they think. And when those feelings are strong enough, facts take a back seat.”
Having created a political movement around such “motivated reasoning” in which emotion substitutes for fact, the masterminds of the GOP now have to deal with its consequences.
It’s downright entertaining, don’t you think?

Raising the birth certificate issue is another example of dems being dishonest. Remember these are the same people that call Tea Partiers raciest with no evidence. These are the same people that blame Bush for having a bad hair day while touting the Clintoon years as wonderful even though Republicans controlled Congress. Dems refuse to talk about real issues that they simply have no answer for. I ask folks this. Have you been better off under Bush or Obama? If you say the latter you’re either naïve or stupid…..

Although Goldman Sachs currently reigns a king of Wall Street, this was not the case in 2008 when the financial industry stood on the brink of collapse. In the midst of the credit crisis, as Lehman was collapsing and Merrill Lynch was going through an emergency takeover, Goldman Sachs sought help from Warren Buffett.
Given his positive outlook for the U.S., Oracle of Omaha was willing to step in and provide Goldman with a $5 billion fund to save the firm from ruin. The deal came with conditions. In return for the funding, Buffett received preferred shares promising a 10% annual dividend, and warrants to purchase $5 billion worth of Goldman common stock at $115 per share.
What was that about liberal billionaires…

That’s the ‘who’ but not the ‘how.’
Steeply progressive income tax rates don’t punish people who already have wealth. Rather, they leave currently working people with only enough to live on, and not enough to invest in wealth creation. Ergo, if you haven’t already accumulated wealth, you likely never will.
High taxes also stifle business investment and job creation. I know you don’t believe that, but, like the law of gravity, the laws of economics exist independantly of your ability tp understand and/or believe.

He was not “mis-treated,” he just did not win re-election, mostly due to loses that occurred during his term. It was not ever a racial issue, so don’t make it one. Regarding the questions about Obama, there have been questions before about where certain people were born, but you would have to be a student of history to accept this. (Look up Hamilton.) Besides, Obama is the first where serious issues have been raised, and with good reason – he grew up outside the US, one of his parents was not American, and there are serious documentation issues in the US, Phillipines and Kenya that cast a big doubt on the location of his birth. Sorry, but it is true. Forgive me for even asking the question.

The top-secret world the government created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has become so large, so unwieldy and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs, how many programs exist within it or exactly how many agencies do the same work.
These are some of the findings of a two-year investigation by The Washington Post that discovered what amounts to an alternative geography of the United States, a Top Secret America hidden from public view and lacking in thorough oversight. After nine years of unprecedented spending and growth, the result is that the system put in place to keep the United States safe is so massive that its effectiveness is impossible to determine.
The investigation’s other findings include:
* Some 1,271 government organizations and 1,931 private companies work on programs related to counterterrorism, homeland security and intelligence in about 10,000 locations across the United States.
* An estimated 854,000 people, nearly 1.5 times as many people as live in Washington, D.C., hold top-secret security clearances.
* In Washington and the surrounding area, 33 building complexes for top-secret intelligence work are under construction or have been built since September 2001. Together they occupy the equivalent of almost three Pentagons or 22 U.S. Capitol buildings – about 17 million square feet of space.
* Many security and intelligence agencies do the same work, creating redundancy and waste. For example, 51 federal organizations and military commands, operating in 15 U.S. cities, track the flow of money to and from terrorist networks.
Created by the same hypocrites who cry about the growth of government when the opposition party is in the White House. Frighten Americans to the point of spending the nation into oblivion and then get the Too Much Government Spending On the Less Fortunate religion. I think I’ll puke.

A nation-wide network of researchers has sprung up to attempt to fill in the blanks, but at every opportunity Obama’s high-priced lawyers have built walls around various records or simply made them disappear. It is estimated that Obama’s legal team has now spent well over $1.4 million dollars blocking access to documents every American should have access to. The question is why would he spend so much money to do this?
The president who campaigned for a more “open government” and “full disclosure” will not unseal his medical records, his school records, his birth records or his passport records. He will not release his Harvard records, his Columbia College records, or his Occidental College records—he will not even release his Columbia College thesis. All his legislative records from the Illinois State Senate are missing and he claims his scheduling records during those State Senate years are lost as well. In addition, no one can find his school records for the elite K-12 college prep school, Punahou School, he attended in Hawaii.
What is he hiding? Well, for starters, some of these records will shed light on his citizenship and birth. Why can’t Mr. Soreto share this information? I think his father is Frank Marshal Davis. If his father his Mr. Obama, then Mr. President is not constitutionally qualified to be POTUS.
For example, Obama’s application to Punahou School – now mysteriously missing – would likely contain a birth certificate. His Occidental College records are important as they may show he attended there as a foreign exchange student.” Indeed, Obama used his Indonesian name “Barry Soetoro” while attending Occidental.
Furthermore, now that at least three document authentication experts have declared the scanned “Certificate of Live Birth” Obama’s campaign team gave to a pro-Obama website to be an obvious phony; we know that he is hiding something here as well.
Mole or Manchurian; you know, it may well be that he was born in Hawaii as he claims, and that his US citizenship was never revoked when he was adopted by his mother’s 2nd husband as he claims, and that he never lied on an application to school or the Illinois Bar as he claims, and that he never applied for grants to school as a foreigner as he claims… but it would be nice to be able to verify whether these claims were true.
For someone who got into office on claims that he’d operate the “most transparent administration ever,” he’s sure making the old KGB look as leak-proof as a submarine with screen doors. Such a professional operation, sealing and/or altering all of those records…how could little old Barry have done that himself, the same guy who can’t even break 37 bowling? He’s got all the coordination of a drunken rhino trying to tap dance, yet he altered documents that well himself? Nope, I don’t think so.
The importance for the American people to seize responsibility and proactively protect the sovereignty of their blood-ransomed, Constitutional freedom is paramount to American Exceptionalism and America. Sometimes, in order to accomplish this, we must vigorously deny access to those with plural, or ambiguous, allegiances. Otherwise, we should resign ourselves to the idea that our value as the last hope for humanity can never be defended or preserved.
Who’s your daddy, Mr. Soreto? If it is Mr. Obama, the senior, your are not constitutionally qualified, with all due respect as a guest lecture, non tenure- rack, non ad-junct constitutional law blowhard. I think we all deserve to know we are rooting for. I whish Brian Shatz would explain himself. That is another rant when I am home from work and opine on this blog. I hope we all don’t need a permit for 1st amendment as we do our 2nd in the near future, again, another rant for another day.

“The Republicans have nothing else to offer besides the birther quackery. Since they can’t come up with real solutions to the many problems facing the American public they spout stinky garbage. The most interesting thing is, so many Republican voters actually believe this stuff.”
On the contrary my dear Watson, Obama will not get re-elected to a second term because of his lack of ability and misguided socialist mentality.
The Republicans have plenty of solutions; Paul Ryan’s plan for starters.

“I’m pretty sure the top 3% of wage earners don’t have mortgages,”
I’ve mentioned before I live in a pretty affluent area (altho I make the point that does not imply anything about my situation). Jay did a piece on Google maps and foreclosures. I check an enclave a couple miles from where I live. Those house prices equate to top 3%. Easy. Half a dozen foreclosures.
I’ve seen just as many cases of poor money management among that tier as among a middle income or lower income tier. In fact, I’ve seen a number of instances of lower relative debt amongst households with much, much, much lower incomes than the top 3%.

none of these people could prove that Obama was not eligible to be president. He beat them all during the elections, yet they have access to armies of investigators. GWB used to RUN THE CIA. Don’t you think he could’ve dug up something here if it existed? Bill Clinton was the freakin POTUS. Don’t you think he could’ve dug up something here if it existed?

TRUE Story:
Got a letter in the mail from the Dept of Justice. Was curious as to what it was about and come to find out it was from the F.B.! here in Atlanta. They sent me a letter to tell me they had tapped my cell phone 8 months prior due to whatever investigation they were working.
I thought to myself, “well isnt that nice of them to send me a letter”…LOL
Come to find out it was because I had contact with someone they had a big case against due to my business. I guess they realized that they was nothing worth listen to on my end and sent me a FYI, courtesy letter after they had indicted the person in question.
As i said before, if they want to find you, they will.

If that worthless POS wants to end the speculation, provide a real birth certificate and it ends right there. By not providing one means he was either not born in the US, or he wants to keep up this debate so folks will not discuss what a horrible job he has done as president. Its the liberal press that keeps this story alive. No mainstream Republican politician or candidate for President believes the birther theory. Yet any time a Republican goes on MSNBC, CNN or the major three networks the first question they get asked is ” Do you believe Barack Obama was born in this country?” Listen folks, there are literally 10 million reasons to vote against Obama in 2012… this birther nonsense is just a distraction.

CLAIM: Obama Blamed The “Budget Holdout For The Collapse Of The Minneapolis Bridge.” During the April 20 broadcast of Fox News’ Fox & Friends, co-host Gretchen Carlson stated: “Should we cut a deal with the Dems, or another bridge could collapse. That was the president’s message yesterday, blaming budget holdout for the collapse of the Minneapolis bridge in 2007.” [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 4/20/11]
FACT: Obama Cited Bridge Collapse To Illustrate U.S. Infrastructure Issues. From the president’s April 19 speech in Annandale, VA:
OBAMA: According to the Republican budget that was passed, for example, we would have to eliminate transportation funding by a third. We’d have to cut transporting funding by a third. You remember when that bridge in Minnesota collapsed with all those people on it? And there was a big hue and cry: How can this happen in America? Well, the National Society of Engineers, they’ve looked around and they give us a D when it comes to infrastructure. Our roads, our bridges, our sewer systems are all deteriorating.
We don’t even have a serious high-speed rail infrastructure in this country. Our broadband lines are slower than places like South Korea. Well, so what, we cut transportation by another third, and what’s going to happen to America? We’re just going to have potholes everywhere? (Laughter.) We’re just going to have bridges collapsing everywhere? Are we going to continue to have airports that are substandard? Are we going to go to other countries and suddenly realize that China and South Korea and all of Europe all have better infrastructure than we do, and we think that businesses are going to come here and invest? Or do we think that at some point companies say, you know what, America has got a second-rate infrastructure and it costs us too much money because our trucks going over those potholes are getting messed up?
So that’s the choice that we’re going to have to make. [WhiteHouse.gov, 4/19/11]

Theory:
1. Left knows Barry is done for and want him out of the way in 2012;
2. Hillary ‘retires’ next year — setting up her run in 2012.
3. Trump has given 90% of the time to Dems.
4. Trump has high profile.
5. Trump, with instructions for the Clinton gang, bring up this issue.
6. Trump has no intention of running but they need Barry out of the way so he’s playing along; they’ll owe him later.
Barry will make more than 1.7 million in 2013 and pay less than the 450kin taxes becuase he is now “super rich” . The spread the wealth, Barry!

Our other choice was John McCain. What do you think John McCain would’ve done differently with Iraq, Afghanistan, TARP (Bush initiated this in Oct), the stimulus, healthcare and amnesty for illegals? In my opinion, it wouldn’t have been much different.
The last GOP administration we had started two unfunded “off the books” wars, and passed a Trillion dollar free-prescription program to buy votes from senior citizens.
Medicare, Medicaid, and the military budgets are 65% of govt spending. Until EITHER party gets these monsters under control – it doesn’t really matter who the president is, if you ask me.

Keep up,
Are you going to sit there with a straight face and say that Obama wasn’t implying that the Minnesota bridge collapsed due to lack of infrastructure and repair? What rational thinking person would not conclude from reading that paragraph that Obama was implying that the bridge was in disrepair, neglected, etc.? It was a design flaw and that is absolutely not the context of what this paragraph implies. Come on keep up. You’re smarter than that keep up.

Sorry for the dealy. I made the mistake of watching the McDonald’s beating video, and it made me physically ill. I cannot believe that any so-called human beings walking this earth would treat another like that. As a parent, all I can say is, if that victim were my child, I would not rest until all of the attackers were tracked down and eliminated. Seriously.
Back to your question…I imagine Obama is probably a citizen, but I don’t know for sure. My guess is that he presented himself as a citizen when it suited him, and as a non-citizen when it suited him. Hence the secrecy.
