Once again Newt shows that Country First was never a real slogan for the Republican Party.
Electing Trump will likely assure that we have another bankruptcy. That’s one of his business trademarks. Thankfully Donnie will never be elected. He likely won’t even run.

The Presidency needs to be cut down to size. We’ve seen what can happen to the US in the hands of at least one moron. God forbid we end up with another like the Donald (not likely, but scary nonetheless).
Time to neuter the presidency and the legislature by dialing back their total budget to 10% of GDP and restricting their lawmaking subject to review of the negative economic impact.

off topic:
Seems like the newbies in DC have been brought up to speed on how things actually operate.
Many of the Republican freshmen in the House won election vowing to shake up Washington, so it’s a little surprising that many of them seem to be playing an old Washington game: raising much of their campaign money from corporate political action committees.
More than 50 members of the class of 87 GOP freshmen took in more than $50,000 from PACs during the first quarter of 2011, according to new campaign disclosure reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. Eighteen of the lawmakers took in more than $100,000.
Rep. Steve Stivers (Ohio) accepted the most PAC dollars of any of the new Republican lawmakers, $241,000 in the first quarter, or about 60 percent of the money he raised.
Overall, fundraising among the large GOP freshman class is below the average raised by new Democratic members in the first quarters of 2007 and 2009, after elections when liberals won big gains in Congress. Two years ago, Democratic freshmen raised $287,000 on average, while the figure this year for the new GOP lawmakers was $176,000.

The fact that Newt Gingrich thinks Trump would be “drastically less dangerous” to the country ought to send chills down our spine. That’s like an endorsement from the Joker in Batman.
Again I go back to an interesting comment made on CNN by Alec Baldwin about running for president in this country. Does it apply to Trump?
Too many people now are running for public office to complete some missing part of their own psyche. There’s some need they have, some psychological need that they believe can only be fulfilled, Democrat and Republican.

Whether he actually says it or not, the fact is we’ll move to a new stage in the “specticalization” or “clownification” of our political system. The point being: he won’t even have to say it. He’ll just stand on the podium with his bravado smile, winking to his cheering crowd as they cheer it. Then he can engage in a pseudo gesture of calming them down and insisting on civility. What worries me is not the “You’re fired!!” gimmickry, it’s the actual blending of reality show egomania with actual policy – which is of course what we’ve seen for years now in Italy with Berlusconi.
Bread and circus for the restless masses and clownish posturers in positions of leadership. This is our future, I fear.

Yippee: “Forget Trump being elected, as that would never happen. He won’t even run.”
Wrong on both counts.
If you think a man who shows a willingness to pander to Americans love of tough, straight talk (let’s just take the oil! instead of being bullied by China, let’s just start bullying them! yeah!), then you are a truly naive person.
And if you think Trump wouldn’t actually run, then you’re doubly naive. As Eugene Robinson pointed out at WaPo the other day, these things have a way of passing a point of no return. Trump may end up in a place where he’s gotten more than he bargained for, but where it’s too late to turn back. Woe until all of us if he gets to that point.
But to think that it couldn’t happen – or to say as Plouffe stupidly did that the American people are never going to hire him – would be a colossal stupidity.

They are called BALLS! Maybe you liberals should get some (balls) instead of blaming your problems on everyone else.”
Perfectly encapsulated in this post are all the stupidities that we have to fear in a possible Trump candidacy. They’re so classic I’ll take them one by one:
“Why do you libs fear Trump so much? Is it because he has as much ’star power’ as Obama? ”
Easy to strike this idiocy down. Obama was the opposite of a star. Even well past his speech at the Democratic convention in 2004, Obama was a virtual unknown outside political junky circles, and was even relatively unknown among African Americans.
“Is it because he actually does have leadership experience in large organizations vice being a community organizer? ”
You’re joking right? Donald Trump is the quintessence of a rich daddy’s boy who was born on 3rd and thought he hit a triple. He has 3 bankruptcies and a history littered with failures. The fact that you’re ignoring this, when your own ideology normally touts business acumen as the be-all end-all, suggests to me that you’re easy prey to 2nd rate thinking and demagoguery.
“Laugh all you want, he is legitimate. ”
I’m not laughing at all.
“He also has something that Obama doesn’t. They are called BALLS!”
This is strictly speaking correct, but nothing is more dangerous in a leader than balls without brains.
“Maybe you liberals should get some (balls) instead of blaming your problems on everyone else.”
The problem isn’t liberals doing this, it’s the populace as a whole. During times or turmoil, the masses are always vulnerable to panderers offering pseudo-, oversimplified solutions.

“You have to stop asking me about a birth certificate,” Trump said on CNN, after weeks in which his play to the widely discredited “birther” movement has allowed him to dominate media coverage of the presidential race. “You’ve got to stop asking the questions.
“The problem is every time I go on a show – like as an example, this morning – the first question you asked me is about the birth certificate,” said Trump, who has said on numerous occasions that he’s “proud” to embrace the issue. “I think my strength is jobs, the economy and protecting our nation from OPEC, China and the other countries that are ripping us off.”
CNN’s Ali Velshi had given Trump a chance to disavow his claims about Obama, which Velshi called a “ludicrous discussion.” Confronted with Trump’s exasperation at the birther questions, Velshi shot back: “We’ll stop asking you the questions when you stop saying that President Obama can’t prove he is born in the United States. Is that a deal?”

America is much poorer than just 2 years ago, we’re on the decline, unemployment has been too high for too long, the average family has lost $100k in net worth, and other countries have lost respect for the USA, and we’re in a third war now. On top of that, the President and his party have not offered a single legitimate idea to extricate us from the mess they exacerbated.
BUT, Barack Obama has had only one wife and that makes me feel much better about everything.
See, I’d rather the USA be in a terminal fiscal and moral mess and be able to say our president has been married only once than I would for American to be prosperous and have a president that has been married more than once.

The fact that you say “you really do fear Trump” suggests someone’s trying to deny that they fear him, which as far as I know is not the case. In any case whether we fear Trump or not is not the issue, it’s what a Trump presidency would mean for this country.

BMDPD 2:06, I realize I may be over-stretching you a bit here in the intellectual category, but for the record, my point is not to dispute the assertions you’ve made, but to point out how your assertions are trivial, merely diversions. I do not dispute, for ex., that “libs fear Trump” (whatever a “lib” is), or that Trump has star power, but instead argue: so what? (I assume you were part of the crowd saying 2 yrs ago that Obama had “star power” and that was the only reason for his election, yet now you’re touting it as a plus? not very intellectually rigorous there, BMDPD).
If Trump didn’t have to ask for government subsidies (and somehow I seriously doubt that), that might have been because he was born into wealth and didn’t have to worry about it. The point being: he still had a backstop (a.k.a. inherited wealth), somebody else to bail him out when he fell off his horse.
The statement “because he has balls, liberals don’t” is proof of a mind that’s not clicking on all cylinders. One doesn’t prove the other, my little friend. In reality of course, a Trump presidency might REALLY bring to light is the fact that the GOP has none, not the Dems.
As for my brains vs Trump’s, I’ve listened to him in interviews and I’m not worried about my intellectual abilities vis-a-vis Mr. Trump’s. Be-lieve me.

Why is Georgia so proud of its ignorant among us? Throughout the black community there are thousands of black men named Kamal, Jamal, Muhammad etc. who attend church on Sunday and shout to Jesus. Mick, dB:
Re wealth, in all seriousness I hear that Ralph Nader has said exactly this, that we’re at a point now where only someone with landed wealth, e.g. a Roosevelt, can save us now. With Obama, for ex., what you have is the ultimate technocratic striver who’s worked his way to the top, so upon ascending the very top of the hierarchy he’s spent his entire life climbing, he’s the VERY LAST person who can be expected to then begin dismantling it or challenge it in radical ways. He was way too much respect for that hierarchy, he owes his rise to it, so it’s folly to expect him to introduce radical change. By this logic, only someone who’s spent their entire life in that wealth and privilege, a Bill Gates or Roosevelt, etc. (could Trump fit this description?), will lack the awe of the power structure that’s required to truly revolutionize it.

Scott, very few Americans questioned the necessity or wisdom of going after bin Ladin in Afghanistan. It was never a controversial war, and there was never a sense that those who fought and died there did so in vain or for less than an important cause.
The war in Iraq, a war of choice against a country that had not attacked us, was very different. The 5,000 Americans who died in that war gave the ultimate sacrifice for a cause that many of us still do not understand.

Oh BMDPD, from your article:
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Voters shows that 52% favor repeal of the health care law, while 41% are opposed. But now just 39% Strongly Favor the law’s repeal, the lowest level measured since the plan’s passage last year. Twenty-nine percent (29%) Strongly Oppose repeal of the legislation. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Since Congress passed the law in late March of last year, total support for repeal has ranged from a low of 50% to a high of 63%. The number that Strongly Favor repeal has ranged from 39% to 50%. At the same time, the number of voters who oppose repeal has run from 33% to 43%.
Thirty-seven percent (37%) of voters now say the health care law will be good for the United States, a finding that has ranged from 32% to 41% since March 2010. Forty-seven percent (47%) say it will be bad for the country, down three points from last week. In prior weekly surveys over the past year, 48% to 57% of voters have said the law will be bad for the country.
Fifty-two percent (52%) of voters with health insurance favor the law’s repeal, as do 51% of those without coverage. Forty-seven percent (47%) of insured voters say the law will be bad for the country, compared to 50% of those who don’t currently have insurance.
And coming from Rasmussen, that’s just a step below a Fox News poll, but even your own article says the tide is turning……

Jay, i am with BMPMD. I thought it was the right thing to do at the time going off the evidence that everybody believed to be true….Dems included and that includes Pres. Clinton. In a way, I still think it was a good thing to be there. Our war in Iraq could fit the same rationale that is being used for why we are involved in Libya with now. Hussein killed his own people in droves. Additionally, we said that we were going after terrorists and those who sponsor terrorists. I know you are going to say that there is no link between Sadaam and Al Quaida. I personally feel that there is if you look hard enough, but I will give you that. There is however, a lot of links between Sadaam and Hamas. Sadaam paid the families of suicide bombers. That is well-known and well-documented. We took out a guy who killed his own people and sponsored terrorists. And you think that is a bad idea??? Isn’t the world a better place without Sadaam?

Wrong. Employment failed to keep up with population growth for 75% of President Bush’s time in office. That means that not only did we not put to work kids who were graduating from high school and college, but that we also weren’t putting back to work people who lost their jobs in the recession that straddled the Clinton and Bush administrations.
The reason the unemployment rate went down is that the labor force SHRANK. It shrank because people stayed unemployed so long that they either fell off the unemployment rolls (and were no longer counted in U3, which is the number you like to cite) or because they became disillusioned and gave up looking for a job (again, this would cause U3 to stop counting them). It’s not mathematically possible for population to increase *simultaneously* with a decreasing labor force.

Lil — “Wrong.”
Sorry, no. I’m right. And backed up by cold, hard, historical numbers. Would you like to see them this time?
“Unemployment was around 5% for most of the Bush administration”
Which is irrelevant, because U3 (again, this is the number you like to cite) ignores long-term unemployed and discouraged job seekers. It’s inaccurate because it doesn’t count those two groups of unemployed people, among others.
What really tells the tale are the job creation numbers. Unemployment is a lagging indicator. That’s why the Republicans like to use it — I think they’re hoping that the economy will stay bad enough long enough to not show improvement in U3 by the time the election gets here.
“and your Idiot Messiah”
I have no messiah, idiot or otherwise. I simply can’t stand to see people make repeated uninformed and incorrect assertions, as you have.
“would deport his Aunt Zeitunie if that would make his own sorry record as strong as Bush’s.”
Actually, his job creation record is *better* than Bush’s. He turned his employment downturn around *faster* than President Bush did, and with a *deeper* downturn than Bush had.

and in the news of the absurd and cool….
Two bottles of 200-year old champagne recently salvaged from a Baltic Sea shipwreck will be auctioned off in June, the local government that owns the bubbly said Wednesday.
Finland’s autonomous province of Aaland “has decided that two bottles will be sold at an exclusive champagne auction held in (the capital) Mariehamn on June 3, 2011,” it said a statement.
One of the auctioned bottles will be from the house of Veuve-Clicquot and the other from the now extinct house of Juglar.
They are part of a batch of around 150 champagne bottles divers stumbled upon last July in a two-masted schooner which had run aground sometime between 1825 and 1830.
Salvaging of bottles — preserved in ideal conditions at the bottom of the Baltic Sea — began in August and authorities identified the bottles as the world’s oldest Juglar and Veuve Clicquot brands.

“has produced higher unemployment in every month of his regime than Bush did in any month of his eight years.”
And his job creation numbers are *better* than President Bush’s. The worst months for employment creation in the last 10 years happened under President Bush, not President Obama.
Here you go:
ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/suppl/empsit.compaes.txt
Scroll down to this (it’s just a little bit down the page):
00000000 Total Nonfarm All Employees (in thousands), SEASONAllY ADJUSTED
Over-the-month change as revised (BM2010)
Economists differ on the exact number, but generally, it is agreed that you have to create ~150K jobs each month — about 1.8M jobs a year — just to keep up with population growth. Create less than that, and true unemployment is INCREASING (because you’re not employing all the new people coming into the labor force and you’re not putting back to work anyone who was already in the labor force), whereas if you create more than that, true unemployment is DECREASING. This is simple math.
Look through President Bush’s monthly numbers (you may have to scroll left and right to see all 12 months of each year). You’ll see that he doesn’t have a positive month until OCT 2003 and that he doesn’t really have a sustained period of job creation over 150K/month until 2005 — in his second term. He does have a 3-month period in the spring of 2004, late in his first term.
Look through President Obama’s monthly numbers, and you’ll see that he’s already had his first positive month (MAR 2010) and a 3-month up period (spring of 2010). And these figures don’t even include anything from 2011 yet.
Compare both sets of numbers, and you’ll see that President Bush’s job losses were shallower over a longer period than President Obama’s were. Yet President Obama turned it around *faster* than President Bush did, and with a deeper hole to dig out of.
What were the worst months for job creation from 2000 – 2010? Well, the *worst* two belong squarely in President Bush’s column; NOV 2008 and JAN 2009.
Sorry, Lil. When you actually *look* at the numbers in detail and break them down and compare them — actually THINKING about what you’re seeing — it’s plain that Obama’s done a better job with a worse employment problem than President Bush did. Both Presidents suck for job creation, but Obama’s clearly done a better job so far in pulling us back from the brink.

During a morning fundraiser at the St. Regis Hotel, a woman interrupted the president to say she had written a song for him. But the message she and her table mates had for the president wasn’t one of affection – they were there to protest the treatment of Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, accused by the U.S. military of handing over thousands of confidential government documents to WikiLeaks.
“I paid my dues, where’s our change?” the group sang. “We’ll vote for you in 2012, yes that’s true. Look at the Republicans — what else can we do?”
It was another reminder to Obama, who is traveling through California and Nevada, that the Democratic base is restless. Obama conceded as much during a fundraiser on Wednesday, acknowledging that he’s frustrated progressives by striking deals with Republicans while going on an extended riff about how “everybody’s a political consultant” and his supporters say they “used to be so excited.”
The protest Thursday was a particularly stark, in-your-face confrontation for the tightly controlled and largely affectionate world that a president inhabits, especially when going from one big-money fundraiser to another.
When the woman first stood up, Obama tried to get her to wait until later, but she persisted and the table of 10 broke into a song that pointed out that each of them had spent $5,000 to attend the event.
Obama appeared to take the interruption in stride and at first he didn’t seem to realize it was a protest song. He looked to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and asked, “Nancy, did you do this?” Ms. Pelosi had a look on her face, as she stared at the singing group, that definitely said she did not, according to the pool report.

My bad, Scott-it was the 1999 dawg who was going on and on about how Trinity UCC and Rev. Wright weren’t Christian, not you.
That said, I will offer this bit of enlightenment, since you seem to think that the church was some kind of hate factory–where “horrible things” (your words) were said.
It’s been awhile since I had a look at a transcript of the infamous Rev. Wright sermon.
It’s rough, scalding hot rhetoric. It’s also fair to say that Wright is expressing precisely the same sentiments that Thomas Jefferson rather famously offered when he wrote “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that His justice cannot sleep forever.”
http://www.sluggy.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=315691&sid=4b3e97ace4ee8cee02bd6850e52f50b7
By the way, if you read beyond the oft-quoted “G.D. America” bit, you’ll find that Wright acknowledges the offensiveness of the phrase in that very same sermon, and actually apologized to the congregants for saying it.
It’s tough, thought-provoking stuff. I wouldn’t call it horrible. YMMV.

I disagree wholeheartedly. back then, you heard about deaths constantly. Now, you do not hear a peep. I just do not think it would have stopped if a Rep was in the White House right now. The media would still be following Cindy Sheehan and they would still be making an effort to report every single death regardless of where it occurred. We would still hear how this month faired in comparison to others unless of course if there was an actual improvement. Then, it would go ignored.
I know you will not agree and frankly I can careless. As the old saying goes “perception is reality.” My perception over there was that the libs in Congress and the media were doing everything it could to undermine us. They didn’t care about us one bit….only looked for ratings and how to use deaths as a way to disparage the Bush presidency. That perception is shared by many veterans. It is further supported how the attention suddenly disappeared when Obama took over and it became his wars. Wars that he said he would end. One war that he actually escalated. Another war that he decided we would play a role in starting.

See how much you assumed?
Your end point’s been discussed here, too. Cons assert Candidate Obama said he would end the Afg war. Speeches have been linked to where he said just the opposite. If he has not been treated so, then those who abused him should be charged and tried. Ultimately the President is responsible and it appears that it has come to the awareness of some at the White House as the individual has been transferred to the custody of others and not left with alleged abusers– a change that many hoped for. It is a disgrace to this country and to many members of our military that anyone would celebrate the abuse of prisoners. It is unfortunate for the President that he has been embarrassed by those allegations by those trusted to properly confine the prisoner. It is a testimony to the power of public pressure that the change has been made. Those who cheer the alleged abuse are shameful.

Facts and truth *used* to matter to conservatives; if facts didn’t line up with what we wanted to do, we’d adjust and fine-tune our approach, and then start over. We didn’t shy away from facts that disagreed with us. Now it’s all about ideology and going LA LA LA LA when someone presents an inconvenient fact or a piece of evidence that disagrees with them.

uh-oh, Obama is sending un-manned drones into Libya. Another war-front is opening. Where are the code-pinkers when you need them and where is the outrage from the left? Innocent civilians will be killed just as they always are when using these machines. Maybe, in Obama’s mind, he can sleep better at night knowing that it isn’t actual human beings on the ground doing the killing, just machines that are far-removed from the “fog of war”. And what about the casualties in Afghanistan? Where are the pictures of the American soldiers bodies coming home that the popular media wanted to put out there during the Bush years? What happened to all that?
By far progressive/liberals are the most hypocritical group of people on this earth. They stand for absolutely nothing but their ideology and even that constantly changes to meet their own political and personnal desires. Obama truly is their messiah because he morphs into whatever he wants to because he knows his base will always accept it. What does he have to lose? He could spit into their face and they would still vote for him. In fact, he as already done that (politically speaking) and they still fall to their knees in front of him. That’s quite true, and you get a gold star for paying attention, and another one for making a very good point.
The point you’re missing though is that U3 would be meaningful as an over-time comparison only if the size of the labor force AND the population did not change, or if they trended tightly together. When one trends much more quickly than the other (say, if we had another baby boom) or if one trends in the *opposite* direction (like we have now, where the labor force has been shrinking but population continues to grow), you lose the baseline values that make U3 worth using as a comparison at all. That’s why conservative commentators love to flog U3 — it doesn’t bear any resemblance to the actual employment situation now, but it’s a handy political cudgel. That’s why you see people like Lil’ relying on it and refusing to read anything that might disagree with it — because they are emotionally and politically invested in it being right. They’re in love with it, and they want to gay-marry it.
Very good point, md, and thank you very much for making it.

Donald Trump executive experience? No need to even go into it. The man’s business reputation speaks for itself whether you like him or hate him.
Obama’s executive wins- a health care bill that will eventually bankrupt the country, record shattering gas prices with further rises to come, record shattering unemployment, record shattering deficits with nearly 5 trillion in new debt added, and record future deficit projections by HIS OWN administration through 2020.
That’s what happens when you hire a pretty speech community organizer who has never had an executive job, doesn’t know the first thing about business, and is absolutely clueless to both economics and what a balance sheet is. So what part of the “anything else” were you agreeing with? It was your choice to post that. Was it wrong to presume you knew the allegations when you reference “anything else”.

You’re falling prey to a simple misconception common to people who engage in knee-jerk ideological demagoguing at the expense of actual thinking.
NPR is NOT “liberal” (whatever THAT is) to Limbaugh’s or FOX News’ “conservative” (and it’s perfectly clear what THAT is).
NPR is simply non-right, non-conservative, which is all you need to know to classify it. The error of perception comes in when you assume that because it’s non-conservative THEREFORE it must be a POLAR opposite of your side, which it’s not. It’s not OPPOSITE to your side, but simply INDEPENDENT of it. (The fact that to your mind these two are one and the same proves only your ideological blindness, not anything at all about NPR).
See, dude, just because an outfit chooses not to parrot your talking points and indulge your side’s gripes doesn’t mean it’s the opposite to your side, it just means it’s distinct from your side. Got it?

Huge mistake. See BMDPD, the right is just as capable of misunderestimating Mr. Trump as the left is.
The New Republic has a nice piece here on why it’s folly for the Republican mainstream to think they can block Mr. Trump’s ascent.
If Trump is pushed out of the limelight or off the campaign trail by the conservative establishment, or by his own erratic record on a host of issues, the atavistic longings of the rank-and-file conservative base will simply affix themselves elsewhere as other candidates try to tap the rich vein of anger he’s helped galvanize. And if he survives the pounding he’s about to get from respectable opinion, then George Will is right: He will make a “shambles” of every Republican presidential debate. But that’s not only because he’s an eccentric demagogue who is willing to say just about anything for attention. It’s also because he’s exactly what conservative voters crave.

Testify! I’ve said the same thing on this blog. Those who cheer such abuse are generally the mean-spirited sub-humans who take great satisfaction in the thought that a prisoner will be put in the same cell with “Bubba.” There is no humanity in people who think like that.

250 constitutional attorneys disagree with you You may be interested in the commentary on suicide watch that reads in part Private Manning has been designated as an appropriate subject for both Maximum Security and Prevention of Injury (POI) detention. But he asserts that his administrative reports consistently describe him as a well-behaved prisoner who does not fit the requirements for Maximum Security detention. The brig psychiatrist began recommending his removal from Prevention of Injury months ago. These claims have not been publicly contested.
Mannings attorney filed a formal complaint over his treatment
But now you are defending his treatment other than beign naked “no problem”, “coddling” and not abusive, now you are running away from your position by suggesting that his alleged treatment was “professional” and denying the allegations of abuse that you previously said were no problem. If they are “no problem” then you must accept them as alleged without defense. To put forth a defense is to admit there is a problem if your defense fails. And the allegations are that your “defense” is a ruse.

pogo — “Uh, no military service for me Joe. So what? Do you hate all of the people in this country that haven’t served?”
Not at all. But I do think that people who haven’t served do not have the right or the moral authority to question my patriotism and love of country. You can disagree with me all you want, but you need to step back if you’re going to suggest that I don’t love my country.
“My problem with liberals such as yourself is your ability to change your fundamental anti-war beliefs based upon who is sitting in the drivers seat in the White House.”
I have no such ability. I am very consistent in my opinions and beliefs on that score, and I will be pleased to articulate them.
Yugoslavia (Clinton, 1995) Shouldn’t have gone in. No Congressional authorization, no compelling national interest.
Afghanistan (Bush, 2002) Absolutely right to go in. We were attacked by someone known to be there and who had admitted to the attack. I’d like for us to stay involved there until we find a ketchup stain that used to be Osama bin Laden. It doesn’t matter to me that we have a different President now; OBL might be hanging around still.
Iraq (Bush, 2003) Shouldn’t have gone in. No Congressional authorization, no compelling national interest, possible misrepresentation and fraud in getting us in there. Getting rid of Saddam Hussein was all fine and dandy, but North Korea’s got a worse dictator and worse weapons, and we haven’t done jack spit to him. In fact, we’re shipping him food and fuel and giving him a table to talk.
Libya (Obama, 2011) Shouldn’t have gone in; no compelling national interest. BUT under the War Powers Resolution, the President can order troops into action for up to 90 days without Congressional authorization. So from my perspective, he’s got until Mid-June to either get that authorization or get us out of there.
What upsets me about conservatives such as yourself is your remarkable ability to hold forth upon and bloviate about our military and about military operations without having the foggiest effing notion of what goes on in the military and what the laws are regulating its use. If you’re going to shoot your mouth off about this topic, then you’d better either come ready to get knocked down a peg or two, or else you can sit down and ask some questions and maybe learn something.
“Jay did exactly the same thing so at least you are in good company. Are you excusing Obama and his continuing war effort in Afghanistan and now his expanding involvement in Libya (a country of little or no consequence to us at this point in history)? Why is he any different than Bush?”
I listed my opinions above. If you’d like to discuss any of them in further detail, feel free to ask me about specific ones.
“Did I say anything about him having congressional approval for the Libyan intervention?”
No. But he needs to have it.
“Presidents have done the exact same repeatedly in our nations history.”
So? Just because you break the speed limit on 285 doesn’t make it right.
“Face it man, you’re just another liberal “brick in the wall”. Nothing more, nothing less.”
No, I’m *better.*
I’m a former Republican. I know how people like you think, and how you argue. I know the tactics, the methods and the arguments. I used to *volunteer* for GOP campaigns, for crying out loud. I’m a gun-owning, college-educated disabled vet who grew up in the Deep South. I’m like y’all’s target demographic and you still ran me off.
The GOP is breaking apart, and has been for several years. The first hint was when y’all slagged on a war veteran named Kerry in the 2004 election. A lot of politically moderate veterans — and I mean A LOT of them — became very disillusioned with the GOP when y’all did that. Some of us left then; I did. Some stuck around for a while longer.
The next hint came when war vet John McCain would talk about his war service, but not his war record. And when the GOP tried to hide how badly the war and economy were going in 2008. You managed to pry off a lot more moderates in that election, too. But the biggest hint has been the rise of the Tea Party. The Tealiban are the crazies that have gotten tired of waiting around to run the show, and so they’ve split off from the GOP. The GOP kind of nurtured them, hoping to co-opt them, but it hasn’t worked. Now they’ve got a monster on their hands that they can’t control, and they’re trying to get moderates like me back so they can win in 2012.
Um — it’s not likely to happen. You haven’t changed anything that ran us off. You’re placing ideology and party loyalty over country. You’re saying crap that isn’t true. You’re slagging on the patriotism of people with whom you disagree. And you’re being a bunch of shrill buttholes when you do it.
I’m *far* from being a typical liberal. You and I probably have a *lot* more in common than you’d care to admit. But I can’t be on your ideological side any more. You’re crapping on too many people just because they’re a little different from you, and you’re vicious about it. Sorry — IMO, people like you shouldn’t be running a pizza joint, much less the most powerful country on earth.
“I am truly sorry for your physical disability and I hope that it will be better either physically or mentally for you.”
Physically.
“But your brain obviously isn’t disabled other than suffering from EPDD (Extreme Progressive Depravity Disorder). That’s a joke Joe. Peace out man.”
If you want any of us back, you’re going to have to try harder. Slagging on our patriotism and calling people un-American isn’t the way to go about doing it. That’s why you lost the White House in 2008. Keep it up, and you’ll just guarantee another Obama term.
Then maybe we’ll get President Mark Warner in 2016. Read up on him, because he’s going to be your President one day.

I’m guessing from Joe Mama’s post that the Republican Party lost a lot like him. And those left in the Party who are taking it down its current path are more than happy to write them off as RINO, impure, liberals at heart.
It’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

Nothing shameful about it………..he’s being held in a cell under a suicide watch for a crime against the State………whether the “conditions” are abusive is highly debatable……….
I’ve seen the inside of plenty of cells one might consider abusive………what’s your definition……that is what is continually being avoided…….I asked that in post #1…….yet you keep skirting it.

Joe Mama, John Kerry was, is and always will be a useless sack of $hit when it comes to being an elected official. I know the man personally and know him to be a lousy Lt. Governor and a worse U.S. Senator easily eclipsing that waste of oxygen Teddy Kennedy in uselessness.
His service was honorable, but his actions following said service were not only objectionable, but wholly without conviction when he threw other medals than his own away.
“Liveshot” Kerry (named for his ability to find an operating camera to get his mug on) is the epitome of an empty suit.

Joe, did I question your patriotism? I don’t know you and you don’t know me. But it looks as if you have some demons you really need to deal with, as we all do. There is no shame in it. Every American has every right to state their case and on the other hand, every American has the right to disagree with that case. If and when that right goes away, we are all screwed and we become nothing more than the sheep that are the people of China, North Korea or Venezuela. The only reason America defeated Hitler and Japan and their dreams of world conquest in goals in WWII is because our nation brought itself together in a time of extreme crisis. If another situation ever arises on the level of that one, I am not at all sure our counry would react in the same manner. If Obama and Bush have done nothing, they have divided this country into two halves which are not at all helpful to any of us. “A house divided, falls”, if you will. And make no mistake, this country is divided and it will fall unless something changes and China will own us without ever firing a bullet. All they have to do is own us through our relentless spending habits and our lack of any industrial base.

Paul — “I’m guessing from Joe Mama’s post that the Republican Party lost a lot like him. And those left in the Party who are taking it down its current path are more than happy to write them off as RINO, impure, liberals at heart.”
They are. They forgot Saint Ronald’s dictum that Thou Shalt Not Speak Ill of Another Republican. They also forgot that he said that they should even stick with people who are on their side only 80% of the time.
In a lot of cases, they ran us off because we didn’t fit some demographic of theirs. For example, they have a problem with folks in high-visibility positions who are known to be or are identifiably not GOP kosher. In my case, they don’t like me because I’m an atheist. I’m still active on Free Republic, but whenever Jim Rob figures out that we’re back, he has a pogrom and kicks us all off. So most of us violate his TOS and cultivate multiple accounts so that we can go back on and find each other again.
They also don’t like non-christians and gays. Shrug. I don’t care if someone’s a theist; that’s their business. And as far as being gay goes — it’s no one’s business but me and my wife what we do in the bedroom, and I don’t care what a couple of gay guys do in theirs. It’s not my relationship, so it’s none of my business.
They’ve also changed in recent years to value orthodoxy over fact. They now ignore or dismiss facts that run counter to their narrative — you’ve seen Lil’ do that all afternoon here.
In short, I just couldn’t continue to be part of that group. I do like some of their ideas, but in the end, a lot of those ideas have morphed into the same mean-spiritedness that has characterized their behavior in recent years.

That may very well be, but the GOP seems to have found a way to diss Democratic veterans while forgiving the shortcomings and failings of Republican veterans.
I refer you to the 2002 slagging of Max Cleland. I don’t care if Saxby Chambliss were to save both me and my wife from a burning building — I will never shake hands with that man.

There are plenty; you named two particularly notable ones. Charles Rangel was an Army NCO during Korea. There are a handful of young Democrats who are Iraq/Afghanistan veterans. Army MAJ Tammy Duckworth, who lost her legs in Iraq, lost her election bid, but IIRC she’s been appointed to a senior position in the VA.
When he was still serving in the Senate, I liked GOP Senator Chuck Hagel (Army, Vietnam) very much and hoped to see President Obama consider him for a Cabinet position, or perhaps a service secretary job like Sec Army.
“However, I didn’t see them piling on Joe Sestak or Jim Webb regarding their military service.”
Hard to do, considering Joe Sestak’s rank (Vice Admiral) and his recent service, and considering that US Marine Jim Webb was Reagan’s Secretary of the Navy.

Local GOP leadership. And in many cases, individual members of the GOP.
“I couldn’t care less how you choose to live your life.”
Maybe *you* don’t, but a lot of conservatives and members of the GOP *do.* If you’re an announced atheist or openly gay, or if you have any other characteristic they don’t like, forget about being in any kind of key position in the party. Oh, they’re happy to take your money, your volunteer time and your vote, but don’t expect to move up in the party hierarchy and don’t expect anyone to listen to any of your issues. It’s sit down and shut up time in that case.
