Herman Cain: Muslims have no place in US government

So we’ve got two probable candidates for the GOP presidential nominees who claim Georgia as their base. One is Newt Gingrich.

This is the other one.

For those who can’t view the video, Herman Cain is asked whether he would be willing to appoint a Muslim as a Cabinet officer or judge.

“No. I will not,” he said. “And here’s why: There’s this creeping attempt — there’s this attempt to gradually ease Sharia law and the Muslim faith into our government.” According to Cain, many American Muslims “are trying to force their Sharia law onto the rest of us.”

That’s just stupid. As in not very bright. By comparison, the Sharia conspiracy crowd makes the birthers look downright sane and reasonable. It will be interesting to see who, if anyone, among the GOP mainstream steps up to repudiate such nonsense. After all, the Constitution explicitly rules out such nonsense, stating point blank that “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”

I guess Herman Cain doesn’t believe in the Constitution.

Oh, and by the way?

In a speech to Texas evangelicals, Gingrich also took up the theme over the weekend, warning that unless America is saved, his grandchildren “will live in a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists and with no understanding of what it once meant to be an American.”

“a secular atheist country … dominated by radical Islamists?” Wow. That would be some trick.

It’s the kind of rhetorical collision that happens when you’re merely listing scare words needed to scare your audience and not even attempting to communicate cogent thought.

Paul,
When I was in the Navy and it got toward replenishment time, we used to have a contest called “Name That Meat”. We had to give it up because nobody won. The funny thing is, when it was sitting there in all that “soup”, with the ship moving and all…you’d have thought it was alive…

That might work, but you have to take into account it’s Monday, the last of the month. Tomorrow’s an odd-numbered Tuesday in a month with 31 days, so you’ll likely have to revise your assessment. I’ll have to check with SoCom, but it just might be Be A Libertarian day!

Anyhow, time to go prepare some supper.

How will Republicans be able to choose amongst all these great candidates for president. I mean, between Cain and Palin and Barbour and Gingrich and Trump and… it has to be just tearing the Republicans apart with so many good choices and especially with all of them hitting on all the right topics like banning abortion and outlawing Muslims and eliminating taxes. I bet they can feel the trickle down every time they think about it. I’m glad I’ve got it easy with an incumbent to vote for.

One more – when I was at university in the dorms they’d prepare hamburger patties with one of like a dozen sauces on it. We were supposed to think it was something other than “hamburger patties with another weird sauce.”

It didn’t move, though. At least until we mixed in the jello -

I love that the right winger Christian a$$hats have been trying to shove their fricking religion down everyone’s throats for 200 years. The laws of this country are not to be founded on any religion.

Your mythology ends where the laws of our country start. That’s the way the founding fathers intended it…if you think you’re going to change it then bring it up and we’ll all vote on it…otherwise, shut the frick up!!!

I’d ironic and sickening that you now turn it on to the Muslims for trying to do it. Hypocrisy is its clearest form.

We were watching the CNN program last night, and that question of assimilation came up. I’m not out to ban any form of dress, but wearing the hijab–not required by the religion btw–is itself stymying the assimilation process. Unmentionable brought up the how much this current Muslim bashing has in common with the Jewish immigration of the last half of the 19th Century and that once the shttlites ditched the medieval garb, assimilation came in short order and the “fear factor” faded into the woodwork….

Herman you are a smart, articulate guy but you’re just pandering to the blue collar guns and religion crowd with his kind of talk. You know the ones, the pot belly truck drivers and parts counter heehaws who listen to Hannity on the radio and think they’re Republicans (most actual Republicans wouldn’t let them come close without a good dousing in Lysol). Herman, there aren’t enough of those Larry the Cable Guy votes out there to even get you out of the starting gate.

Has anyone considered the fact that Herman Cain, an African American would need a significant (but maybe not a majority of support) from the African American community to plausibly win a general election?

African Americans also comprise a significant portion of the Muslim-American community. Cain may not allow a Muslim to serve in any prominent position in his future administration but that still doesn’t negate the fact that muslims can still vote. His position I imagine would undermine his support among a significant demographic.

I think people forget Muslims can still be significant players in American elections. After all, in the 2000 Presidential Election most Arab-Americans/non african-american muslims voted for George W. Bush. If you alienate that vote too much it could hurt you in critical states like Ohio in a close election.

I think Cain’s statement is very problematic in a general election environment, not just with muslims, but also with independents who may be disturbed by such a hardline position. I know of many people who feel that a person can be authentically loyal to the United States regardless of their religious orientation or ethnic creed.

If “suspect” religious affiliations were used to determine a person’s loyalty to the country there would probably be official bans against Mormons and Catholics serving in office. I personally think Cain’s position undermines that long held American tradition of “fair play”.

Sharia law? Don’t you know Sharia law needs far fewer lawyers? Won’t ever happen in the US.

Also, just for history’s sake, note that Sharia law predates Islam. “Let he who is without sin amongst you throw the first stone.” Sound familiar? Islam was hundreds of years in the future when that was said.
