In Georgia, housing woes a long-term drag on economy

As we claw our way out of this recession, it’s easy to forget where it all started: housing. And while other parts of the economy have begun to recover and show signs of health, the housing situation is actually getting worse by some key standards. The Atlanta Federal Reserve has some interesting data and — oh goody! — charts to explain where we are at the moment.

For example, the number of American households who owe more on their mortgage than the house is worth — known as negative equity — continues to grow in many markets, including Georgia. In fact, in the fourth quarter of 2010, Georgia had the sixth highest rate of negative equity in the nation. Three out of 10 Georgia homeowners owed more in loans on their property than their property was worth, which is a remarkable number.

negative

In the metro Atlanta area, the ratio is even higher. More than one out of three homeowners in this market are “underwater” on their mortgage, making them prime candidates for eventual default or foreclosure. Those who do not default will experience long-term “houselock,” meaning they’re stuck in those homes because they’re unable to sell them for enough to pay off the mortgage. Every monthly mortgage payment they make is another payment in a bad investment, but they make them anyway because that investment is also a home.

That is not a problem that is going away soon, with “soon” defined as anytime in the next five or maybe 10 years. It will continue to be a drag on housing prices and on consumer spending. New-home construction — once the driving force in the metro Atlanta economy — will continue to be more of a boutique business than a thriving industry.

That’s what happens when a bubble pops. That’s what happens when the music stops. Sooner or later, things that are too good to be true always stop being true.

AmVet,

Curiously enough I didn’t think you would provide any facts. How utterly predictable. But you go on thinking that the people that got hurt in the subprime crisis were Republicans if it makes you feel better. Everyone else knows different- those thousands of people that descended on east point to get assistance know better. They were the ones that got devastated thanks to Mr. Bawney Frank and Chris Dodd. BTW where oh where is Franklin Raines today?

This is what the Left/Unions are trying to do to this country!!!

former official of one of the country’s most-powerful unions, SEIU, has a secret plan to “destabilize” the country.

The plan is designed to destroy JP Morgan, nuke the stock market, and weaken Wall Street’s grip on power, thus creating the conditions necessary for a redistribution of wealth and a change in government.

The former SEIU official, Stephen Lerner, spoke in a closed session at a Pace University forum last weekend.

The Blaze procured what appears to be a tape of Lerner’s remarks. Many Americans will undoubtely sympathize with and support them. Still, the “destabilization” plan is startling in its specificity, especially coming so close on the heels of the financial crisis.

Lerner said that unions and community organizations are, for all intents and purposes, dead. The only way to achieve their goals, therefore–the redistribution of wealth and the return of “$17 trillion” stolen from the middle class by Wall Street–is to “destabilize the country.”

Lerner’s plan is to organize a mass, coordinated “strike” on mortgage, student loan, and local government debt payments–thus bringing the banks to the edge of insolvency and forcing them to renegotiate the terms of the loans. This destabilization and turmoil, Lerner hopes, will also crash the stock market, isolating the banking class and allowing for a transfer of power.

Lerner’s plan starts by attacking JP Morgan Chase in early May, with demonstrations on Wall Street, protests at the annual shareholder meeting, and then calls for a coordinated mortgage strike.

Lerner also says explicitly that, although the attack will benefit labor unions, it cannot be seen as being organized by them. It must therefore be run by community organizations.

Lerner was ousted from SEIU last November, reportedly for spending millions of the union’s dollars trying to pursue a plan like the one he details here. It is not clear what, if any, power and influence he currently wields. His main message–that Wall Street won the financial crisis, that inequality in this country is hitting record levels, and that there appears to be no other way to stop the trend–will almost certainly resonate.

A transcript of Lerner’s full reported remarks is below, courtesy of The Blaze. We have heard the tape, but we have not independently verified that the voice is Lerner’s. You can listen to the tape here.

Here are the key remarks:

Unions are almost dead. We cannot survive doing what we do but the simple fact of the matter is community organizations are almost dead also. And if you think about what we need to do it may give us some direction which is essentially what the folks that are in charge – the big banks and everything – what they want is stability.

There are actually extraordinary things we could do right now to start to destabilize the folks that are in power and start to rebuild a movement.

For example, 10% of homeowners are underwater right their home they are paying more for it then its worth 10% of those people are in strategic default, meaning they are refusing to pay but they are staying in their home that’s totally spontaneous they figured out it takes a year to kick me out of my home because foreclosure is backed up

If you could double that number you would you could put banks at the edge of insolvency again.

Students have a trillion dollar debt

We have an entire economy that is built on debt and banks so the question would be what would happen if we organized homeowners in mass to do a mortgage strike if we get half a million people to agree it would literally cause a new finical crisis for the banks not for us we would be doing quite well we wouldn’t be paying anything…

We have to think much more creatively. The key thing… What does the other side fear the most – they fear disruption. They fear uncertainty. Every article about Europe says in they rioted in Greece the markets went down

The folks that control this country care about one thing how the stock market goes what the bond market does how the bonuses goes. We have a very simple strategy:

How do we bring down the stock market
How do we bring down their bonuses
How do we interfere with there ability to be rich…
So a bunch of us around the country think who would be a really good company to hate we decided that would be JP Morgan Chase and so we are going to roll out over the next couple of months what would hopefully be an exciting campaign about JP Morgan Chase that is really about challenge the power of Wall Street.

And so what we are looking at is the first week in May can we get enough people together starting now to really have an week of action in New York I don’t want to give any details because I don’t know if there are any police agents in the room.

The goal would be that we will roll out of New York the first week of May. We will connect three ideas

that we are not broke there is plenty of money
they have the money – we need to get it back
and that they are using Bloomberg and other people in government as the vehicle to try and destroy us

And so we need to take on those folks at the same time. And that we will start here we are going to look at a week of civil disobedience – direct action all over the city. Then roll into the JP Morgan shareholder meeting which they moved out of New York because I guess they were afraid because of Columbus.

There is going to be a ten state mobilization to try and shut down that meeting and then looking at bank shareholder meetings around the country and try and create some moments like Madison except where we are on offense instead of defense

Where we have brave and heroic battles challenging the power of the giant corporations. We hope to inspire a much bigger movement about redistributing wealth and power in the country and that labor can’t do itself that community groups can’t do themselves but maybe we can work something new and different that can be brave enough and daring and nimble enough to do that kind of thing.

I just wish one of them could tell me how it makes sense for 47% of the people to vote in whatever freebies they want when they have no skin in the game.

It makes sense because of the “extend the Bush tax cuts to save the economy” crap. Had Bush’s tax sale been allowed to expire as it was written, the 47% that pay no FEDERAL INCOME TAX would have been lowered back down to around 35% which is where it was before Bush decided to lower more people’s tax burdens to zero. I guess Jan 2013 is the next opportunity lower that 47%. I’ll be waiting to see how many people campaign for it.

I can speak first hand. I own a building material supply company. In the last two years, I’ve laid off 90 of my previous 208 employees. I’m still not making money. My suppliers aren’t making money. My cost of doing business keeps going up. Health insurance and diesel fuel to name two. Every 50 cents diesel goes up cost me 5,000.00 per month. Our split on health care has gone from 250,000 per year 3 years ago to 450,000 with LESS coverage. Washington, this IS THE REAL WORLD OUT HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just can’t make this stuff up:

Won’t You Help James O’Keefe Pay off His ‘Major Credit Card Debt’

Conservative prankster James O’Keefe, the artless cad behind heavily edited video “stings” on NPR, ACORN, and other enemies of the state, has been paying for all of his work on his and his buddies’ credit cards. Apparently it costs a lot of money to carry a camera and act like a jackass — $50,000, as it happens! So won’t you be a peach and give him $50,000, or perhaps even $1 million? This is James O’Keefe’s plea in an email to supporters.

O’Keefe explains that he and his friends have “hit a wall” after “running up major credit card debt” to finance their projects. He writes that it “cost us about $50,000 when all is said and done to produce the NPR video,” which is incredible, and “If you help us raise over $50,000, it will go toward our next video — after we pay off our credits cards, of course.” What other information could you possibly want from this notorious liar?

And then he asks for a million dollars: “If you help us pass $100,000 — we can do two new videos… And if by some chance, we raise $1,000,000 — we could expose 20 disturbing cases of government abuse and corruption. But, all I’m worried about is $50,000 right now.”

“Four Words. Inherited Income. Paris Hilton.”- DebbieDoRight

Debbie,

One thing we may all agree on, cons and libs, is that the woman is a superficial twit. But the money she will inherit is money that was earned and taxes paid on the income by her parents- who did the right things. They took risks, invested wisely, built an empire that employs thousands of people etc. The thousands of jobs they have created worldwide in constructing their hotels, maintenancing them, insuring them, redecorating them, etc. and staffing them and the tens of millions of dollars if not billions that that corporation has paid in hotel taxes, restaurant and liquor taxes, real estate taxes, payroll taxes, and finally taxes on the earnings is staggering. I do not begrudge the Hilton’s passing on money they earned to the twit.

I’m not sure what your point is. Are you saying that you and I are entitled to the twit’s money because it was earned by her parents and not her? If so it doesn’t matter. Taxes were already paid on her parent’s earnings and as I’ve pointed out the pure economic impact of their hotels is payment enough through the vast array of taxes that their hotels already pay. They and their hotels have paid vast sums of money in taxes that you and I can’t even fathom ever paying.

They (and she will) only reap the benefits of the board’s work.

People got hurt all over. Not just poor black people here in Georgia. But as a percentage overall I would without a doubt say that Dems were disproportionately hurt more no matter what their race. That’s due to lower education levels, lower affluence, etc. And certainly some Repubs in middle and upper middle income communities had these loans but by and large the loans were concentrated in lower income and lower middle class areas throughout the country. Surely you realize this simple fact.

Next you’re probably going to try and say that the more affluent, higher educated suburbanite folks vote Dem and that its the poor and lower middle class people who vote Republican.

Also, just telling you about our local experience here in Georgia. The demographics don’t lie sport.

“And the fat lazy Marietta and Roswell suburbanites in their gas guzzling Suburbans were picking them up by the droves, non-stop in front of the Home Depot to mow their lawns, landscape, fix things, etc.”

Huh, I didn’t know John F. Kerry was a fat lazy Mariatta type?

WOW:

I’m not on the left but…

Hillary now says Kaddafy doesn’t have to go. Anyone on the left care to take a stab at what Obama is trying to accomplish in attacking a country that didn’t attack us?

A divided Libya, much like Palestine?

Kissinger mentioned it last night. I’d already read about the possibility elsewhere.

Egypt would assume influence over the eastern half.

Southern C,
You forgot the part about not including the under $250K which was the libs attempt at more class warfare. And magically, all you libs supported that tax increase because it doesn’t affect you. Why should you care if the evil rich people have to put more money in the pot for you to siphon off as you see fit with more social programs. No skin off your backs, right?

Mind if I have your credit card to do a little shopping. I promise it’ll be for the children.

Sorry to have to burst your bubble regarding the U.S. vs. Detroit. You need to do your research before you go public – you’re usually smarter than that ……. maybe it’s late and you’re tired.

“Over the past 100 years the US has seen the largest population growth in its history, fuelled by the baby boomers of the postwar years. And its trajectory is to continue to put on numbers steadily through this century,”

Trailer parks are full of “conservatives”…

Rightwing troll,

At least our trailer park conservatives- poor as they are- don’t form dangerous gangs that carjack, sell drugs openly on the street corner in front of their house- how stupid is that?, do home invasions, smash and grabs at local malls, and brazenly murder each other with AK-47s in drug turf gang wars. And at least these people have enough sense of decency and pride that you can’t just go down there and round them up on a bus like cattle and pay them $5 to go and vote Republican. And the reality is that many trailer park white people vote Democrat. You’re just too full of blather to freaking know that.
