House GOP threatens utilities for not toeing climate-change line

From Politico:

“GOP lawmakers and industry lobbyists are talking about legislation aimed at reining in power companies after some utilities were seen as being less than friendly to their efforts to block Obama administration climate change rules.

Several House Energy and Commerce Committee Republicans and industry lobbyists are pushing for a “Ratepayer Protection Act,” a measure that would limit utilities’ ability to pass along costs to consumers, according to lobbyists close to the committee.

The discussions come after POLITICO last week reported that several top utility CEOs weren’t thrilled with a draft bill from Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) to preempt the EPA on climate change.

CEOs from American Electric Power, NextEra Energy, Southern Co. and Dominion Resources said to varying degrees that they support allowing the EPA to proceed on a “reasonable” time frame on greenhouse gas rules for power plants, petroleum refiners and other major stationary sources.”

In other words, Republicans in Congress want to use the power of government to punish utilities for being insufficiently opposed to greenhouse gas regulation. Lovely use of limited government there, folks.

Oh, and I just have to ask: What provision of the Constitution empowers Congress to interfere in the decisions of state Public Service Commissions in their regulation of state-chartered utilities?

If you saw what the Republicans did in the meeting, it was quite evident that they were doing ANYTHING to circumvent the processes…..

If the GOP was honest about what they did, why did they sneak away from the Capitol??

….fro Madison.com:

The Republican senators who voted to strip public unions of most of their collective bargaining rights Wednesday evening made an uneasy getaway on a Madison Metro bus as angry protesters closed in and heckled them with chants of “Shame.”

The senators were herded by Capitol police onto the bus and taken to a “secure location,” says Madison Metro spokeswoman Jennifer Bacon.

“They requested to use one of our buses to transport,” she says. “They didn’t actually tell us who they were transporting but we figured it out.”

The bus took the senators to a location near the Dane County Airport – Bacon says she’s not at liberty to say exactly where – then police took them to another location.

The non rich White people who vote Republican are responsible for electing these Republican lap dogs of the Koch Bros. and the corporate bosses. Democrat voters didn’t come out and vote in the mid-term elections. Only 25% of Black Christians voted. So i don’t understand why Democrats are surprised by the Republican legislative agenda. The Republicans are going to repeal all of the Democrat legislative gains over the last 75 years. The Republicans are going to take America back, way back to the 1930’s when non rich people had no rights and no safety net. What is all of this non-violence B.S. about ??? Democrats didn’t make any of these gains using non-violence tactics. When will the Democrats figure out that 2nd amendment remedies apply to them too ???

HDB, you can continue to ignore the facts in front of you all you want, but the fact remains that the procedure they used last night was legal and appropriate. If they did not cross a “T” nor dot an “I” in their committee meeting, they will simply do what is neccesary and do it all over again.

But the results will be the same.

And recall committees are not petitions, nor are they elections. They are merely a first step in trying to get a recall on the ballot, which is a very, very high hurdle in every state.

Not sure what you mean by “sufficient grounds,” but all you need for a recall vote in WI are a bunch of signatures on a petition, it appears.

To hold a recall election, petitioners must collect signatures equal to 25% of all the votes cast in the most recent gubernatorial election — in this case, about 533,000 signatures — within 60 days of filing.

Ask yourself why any respectable Democrat is not in hidding embarrassed over the way people in his/her party are conducting themselves over the Wisconsin situation?

The Left is in almost complete meltdown. Pundits spoiling their underware. Physical acts of violence. Threats of violence. Reported death threats against legislators and their families. Protests like the 60’s. Rhetoric accusing Republicans of destroying the Constitution, etc, etc.

The rhetoric sounds familiar of the Obamacare fiasco in reverse. But not the violence, not the threats of violence, not unruly crowds. Those are unique to the Left. Not to Republicans. Not to the Tea Party.

Like a school yard bully, the Left can dish it out but can’t take it. My advice, get used to it. We have only just begun.

HDB,

When the facts of the case are discussed I seriously doubt there will be much if any of a backlash towards the Republicans in Wisc. We’ve all seen how unruly, thuggish, and violent these protesters are. They aren’t exactly garnering sympathy.

As for the teachers when you include their benefits they are doing much better than the average Wisconsonite- many of whom no longer have a job in the Obama economy.

There is a point of being reasonable and the public unions simply are not being reasonable. A 12% reduction in health care and retirement benefits is not unreasonable when private sector taxpayers all around you have lost jobs- not just health care and retirement benefits but their jobs.

This is nothing more than public unions bullying and extorting the taxpayers of Wisconsin. The public unions have pretty much bankrupted California and are devastating the budgets of several other states. A stand has to be made somewhere against public unions breaking the backs of the taxpaying citizenry. We are making the stand. And we will win any recall attempt. That you can bank on.

Democrats believe the globe is warming. Democrats believe human activity is causing it to warm. What is incredible is that Democrats believe politicians in DC can reverse it, as promised.
Obama & his adm. say they will reverse the level of CO2 emissions from 2005 levels, which were 6 B tons, by 83% by 2050. 83% of 6 B tons leaves a mere 1 B tons of emissions by 2050.
Anyone see a problem with that?
The population was about 300 M people in 2005. By 2050, there will be an estimated 420 M people. 1 B tons of CO2 emissions divided by 420 M people is about 2.4 tons per person. The last time the US had an emissions level of 1 B tons was in 1910. The only problem is that in 1910, there was only 92 M people. The last time the US had a CO2 emissions level of 2.4 tons per person was in 1875, probably from burning wood.

Since when did making death threats, trashing the Capital building and name calling become peaceful?

Let me guess, like you do. When you started doing those things. Am I right, huh. Am I, huh.

It’s hilarious seeing some posters use an argument protesting the Wisconsin law, when they argued the exact opposite a few months ago in favor of Obamacare. Idiots to the left, morons to the right, as always.

On Pete King——————–gotta watch those mooooooslims——————–

Here are the 15 reports of police misconduct tracked in our National Police Misconduct News Feed for this Tuesday, March 8, 2011:

* St Paul MN settled a lawsuit for $270k to a woman claiming she needed over 300 stitches after a police officer allegedly threw her through a glass door. Police still insist that she fell. [3]

* The villages of La Grange Park IL & Brookfield IL both agreed to settle a lawsuit for a combined $262k to a man who was tasered 11x in 56 seconds while he was having an epileptic seizure. [3]

* Three Hamilton County OH deputies are the subject of a lawsuit filed by a man who was tasered 7 times in about a minute while he was suffering from a diabetic episode. The suit was filed after prosecutors refused to file charges over the incident because an “expert” they hired cleared the officers of wrongdoing. In fact, that expert told reporters she has never found wrongdoing by any officer she’s investigated in her career as a “use of force expert”. [5]

* Ottawa County MI is being sued by a college student who was unarmed when he was shot in the chest by a deputy during a raid on his apartment because he raised his arm to shield his eyes from a flashlight glare when he opened the door for the officers. [0]

* A Seaside CA police officer has been arrested on 2 assault and 6 sexual battery charges involving incidents that allegedly occurred while he was on duty. [1]

* A Downriver MI police officer is the subject of an investigation into unspecied sexual assault allegations. [2]

* A Fort Worth TX police officer is under investigation after a couple complained that the officer was overly aggressive and used excessive force when he injured a woman at a park while throwing her into his cruiser then falsely ticketing the man she was with for violating the park’s curfew while many others were in the park playing with their dogs and watching softball games. [2]

* Danbury CT has settled a lawsuit for $400k to 8 of 11 day laborers who claimed that an immigration raid was a matter of racial profiling. Oddly, the lawyer representing the city called the $400k payout “vindication” for the city. [1]

* A New Melle MO police officer has been sentenced to probation for sexually harassing a school teacher via text messages and an alleged illegal traffic stop. Previous reports about the case also included allegations he threatened her inside a school classroom with a taser but subsequent articles didn’t mention it. [0]

* A San Bernardino County CA assistant sheriff, captain, lieutenant and a deputy were among 7 sheriff’s employees who were indicted for perjury, grand theft and conspiracy on allegations the rigged exams in order to falsely claim pay raises. [0]

* Four Milwaukee WI police officers were suspended from 1-3 days for failing to properly investigate a fatal hit-and-run accident that involved a relative of a police officer. [1]

* A now-retired Houston TX police officer pled guilty to theft and misapplication of $200k in police union funds. [0]

* Three Washington DC police officers have been suspended after arrested for receiving stolen property in sting operation [0]

* A Bennington County VT deputy was arrested on a domestic assault charge on allegations he threw a can at a woman then grabbed her by the throat and threw her to the floor. [0]

* And finally, a Baltimore MD police major is under investigation for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident involving his city-owned car. [0]

“The protesters have NOT been thuggish…nor disorderly; in fact, they have been COMPLIMENTED by the police because of their actions……”- HDB

Come on now HDB. Be serious. Physically taking over the capital building for weeks on end is not disorderly? Could you imagine the hell you would be raising if tea party members had physically taken over govt property for weeks on end much less one single day?

Perhaps you should actually get a different perspective once in awhile and go to Fox news and see the video there of protesters bursting straight through the police and taking over?

Death threats, the video of a union thug telling a tea party member he was going to break his god#$!m neck, protestors calling the gov Hitler, death threats against various Republican legislators. And you deem these people peaceful? Good grief.

“The problem that I had with the GOP and HCR is that they decided to vote AGAINST their OWN proposals”

HDB, you have a bit of a revisionist streak in you. None of the GOP proposals, cica 2008, were included in the HCR. None. Princess Pelosi wouldn’t allow amendments from Republicans. And once coupled with the distasteful and likely un-Constitutional provision of a mandate, principled people would have had no choice but to vote against the entirely of the bill.

Now back to your precious Dem senators from Wisconsin, they had a choice to vote as well. They ran. Great profiles in courage.
