“GOP lawmakers and industry lobbyists are talking about legislation aimed at reining in power companies after some utilities were seen as being less than friendly to their efforts to block Obama administration climate change rules.
Several House Energy and Commerce Committee Republicans and industry lobbyists are pushing for a “Ratepayer Protection Act,” a measure that would limit utilities’ ability to pass along costs to consumers, according to lobbyists close to the committee.
The discussions come after POLITICO last week reported that several top utility CEOs weren’t thrilled with a draft bill from Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) to preempt the EPA on climate change.
CEOs from American Electric Power, NextEra Energy, Southern Co. and Dominion Resources said to varying degrees that they support allowing the EPA to proceed on a “reasonable” time frame on greenhouse gas rules for power plants, petroleum refiners and other major stationary sources.”
In other words, Republicans in Congress want to use the power of government to punish utilities for being insufficiently opposed to greenhouse gas regulation. Lovely use of limited government there, folks.
Oh, and I just have to ask: What provision of the Constitution empowers Congress to interfere in the decisions of state Public Service Commissions in their regulation of state-chartered utilities?

Sorry for the delay in responding, I’m at work. Back to the subject, I meant ignorance as a state of mind not intelligence. When I said “Unsuspecting and Ignorant White People” I meant those who only know what they hear but don’t take the time to get to know another person’s whose life experiences is slightly different from their own but closer than they realize. They rather listen to people who probably wouldn’t cross the street to speak to them in a normal circumstance but don’t mind using them to do their fighting (i.e. wars, cultural battles, for their votes, and menial labor jobs) and in the mean time they keep the middle fighting the lower middle fighting the upper poor fighting the lower poor and all the while keeping the vast majority to themselves. Because the majority of the people in the upper 1% are White they keep the pipe dream alive that “one you too could be me” in the minds of people who think that this is true. Even when every indication shows us that the rich are going to keep as much of this country’s wealth to themselves by systematically keeping the deck stacked against the rest of us through low wages, hard to afford health care, high gas and utility prices and banking institutions not lending money. And who do you ask is propping up this system, “Unsuspecting and Ignorant White People”. Why is it we only hear the phrase “class warfare” when we are talking about the rich but when it comes to the poor we only hear slurs and innuendos. Mind you I’m not taking up for the poor but only saying the rich have “some s’plaing” to do also. The state of our nation’s affairs and troubles can be spread far in the mess we are in. My point is prejudice and hatred of people who are in the same boat only sinks it faster. Remember on the Titanic the rich were saved first.

“So why do I consistently hear about how evil America is from the left?”
I’m going to attack this from several ideas (not necessarily in order, OK??):
1) Wealth inequality: When 2% of the population controls over 60% of the nations’ wealth…and pays less in taxes than 50% of the populace…
2) Racial superiority: Conservatism has historically had a racist tint to it; prior to 1964, conservatives were Democrats — since then, they are Republicans, but the racist paradigm still exists
3) Lack of universal health care: The US is the only major developed country without universal health care coverage
4) Energy consumption: The US consumes 25% of the worlds’ resources
5) “Ugly American” Syndrome: Americans think that they are ABOVE everyone else…..not an INTEGRAL part of a larger system…..
6) Removal of the safety net/ambivalence towards the poor
7) Hypocracy pertaining to certain “Christian principles”: Abortion (want to criminalize it….but won’t take responsibility for a child once BORN); marriage (decry same sex marriage, but proport equal treatment under the law!)
It’s a combination of a myriad of things that place liberal vs. conservative in a combative position!!

I see protestors in Wisconsin are physically preventing GOP reps to enter the legislative building. And that police are helping the protestors rather than doing their jobs. And all this after the Dem legislators abandoned their jobs.
Sorry, this is NOT democracy in action, this is a whiny mob who is making death threats to GOP reps. And Michael Moore declared “war” on national TV. Is this the new civility? Is the left going to come down against this violent rhetoric, or was that only a problem when Palin had said something you didn’t like? Are you hypocrites? Are you really for Democracy, or just like Democracy when you get your way, and are happy to abandon it when you don’t get your way?

Shared sacrifice? People have lost jobs, been furloughed, and some have taken cuts. What else do you want from public workers? As far as pensions, on the fed level, Reagan took care of that years ago. As I’ve said here time and time again, my retirement is at the whim of the market. If people don’t buy, companies don’t profit, and I don’t have a retirement. I think my payments from Social Security will be more than what my “pension” pays me.
ALL of gov’t is funded by the taxpayer…..and the private sector must generate enough revenue to pay the salaries of the private sector worker and a majority of the public sector worker……that’s just the way it is. Nothing against those working in the public sector…………
You just nailed it. The private sector has to generate it. Now, why should private sector employees take it out on public sector employees, when it’s the private sector companies that are screwing them? Wages have been stagnant for what, 20-30 years? That had nothing to do with a decision from public sector workers. That was private sector workers allowing their collective bargaining powers to be eroded. Now, for us to be equal, public sector employees have to give up their right to collective bargain?
If the folks in the private sector no longer have pensions……do you think they like the idea of paying for yours when they don’t have one themselves??
There’s two ways to remedy that. First, if they want my pension, then take my job. I’ll gladly take the private sector job with more pay up front. Hell, I could save way more that way than I could waiting 30 years or so on a pension. Or, private sector workers could ban together and attempt to bargain for better benefits. I imagine with CEO pay up over 400% and record profits on the books, there is some wiggle room for increasing worker benefits without killing a company’s profits, right?

Survivors, victims and statisticsFurther information: List of Titanic passengers and List of crew members on board RMS Titanic
Category Number aboard Number of survivors Percentage survived Number lost Percentage lost

Of a total of 2,223 people aboard Titanic only 706, less than a third, survived and 1,517 perished.[60] The majority of deaths were caused by hypothermia in the 28 °F (−2 °C) water[61] where death could be expected in less than 15 minutes.[62]
Men and members of the 2nd and 3rd class were less likely to survive. Of the male passengers in second class, 92 percent perished. Less than a quarter of third-class passengers survived.[63] Six of the seven children in first class survived, all of the children in second class survived, whereas less than half were saved in third class. 96 percent of the women in first class survived, 86 percent of the women survived in second class and less than half survived in third class. In many cases…HUMILITY will get you further than the superiority complex!! You can catch more flies with HONEY than with VINEGAR!!
6) Removal of the safety net/ambivalence towards the poor” Yeah, and 35% of all income now comes from a government source. Good thing we’ve removed that safety net.” The focus of the GOP IS the elimination of the safety net! Rather than linking the safety net to education and the promotion of the lower class to middle class (like the GI Bill), many want to eliminate the safety net and create a permanent lower class…and generate a greater black market economy!!
Like I said…it’s my opinion….but having EXPERIENCED it personally…..

Well if that’s the case items made overseas by countries with no child labor law, no minimum wage and no work safety rules or regs should be sold to us comsumers at a cheaper price. It appears the overhead must be pretty low or we are being ripped off.

Still swing for the fences and still whiffing, HDB.
“1) When 2% of the populace controls 60% of the wealth, and pays less in taxes than 50% of the same population…….people will consistently rail about inequalities…..”
Your figures are still patently false, HDB. Repeating them doesn’t make them so.
“It’s more COVERT than it was 20 years ago…but it still exists! Why are native-born minorities denigrated by Caucasians while simulataneously granting access to those that emigrate from abroad (save Mexicans)! Emigrants are granted financial access towards success in greater features than native born!! It’s not a crutch…but fact…..”
Ahhhh, the old “you can’t see it, but it’s there” argument. Doesn’t work with ghosts, either, HDB.
“and limited to those with the financial means to access the same! Those without means suffer at the behest of those who have!!”
Funny, I don’t see a whole lot of people being denied health care, HDB. Especially since we all pay for their emergency room visits. Not exactly limited, except in your mind.
“Problem is that we are in competition with other economies of the world; in order to maintain our dominance, we need to DIVERSIFY…..something that is being resisted!! Portugal is deriving 20% of its energy from renewable sources….France generates 60% of its electricity from nuclear power…..this nation needs to begin the transition!!”
And which party has NO energy policy, HDB? That would be yours. No coal, no oil exploration, limited nuclear (and only if it takes decades to approve a single plant). Sorry, but solar and wind just don’t cut it with today’s needs and technology.
“In many cases…HUMILITY will get you further than the superiority complex!! You can catch more flies with HONEY than with VINEGAR!!”
And if I were catching flies, that might be true. However, I am trying to live my life as I see fit without bothering anyone else. You might try that axiom sometime.
” The focus of the GOP IS the elimination of the safety net! Rather than linking the safety net to education and the promotion of the lower class to middle class (like the GI Bill), many want to eliminate the safety net and create a permanent lower class…and generate a greater black market economy!!”

“That’s why I don’t understand the animosity towards public sector employees.”
I for one have no animosity………..it’s just basic math.
Just because a gov’t thinks it has unlimited funds to operate, does not make it so. The funds are finite…..for the most part.
Public jobs are just part of the equation……they are an expense on the public books……to balance the books, there are only a handful of remedies….ALL dealing with either raising revenue or cutting expenses.
You are looking at it from a personal standpoint, but you are an expense.
15 trillion in debt indicates we have a problem……………

In December the domain maciverinstitute.com was privately registered with no one willing to lay public claim to the new org. ..it was still largely lacking substance…The site did give some important information… It gave a glimpse of some of the people involved with this operation – First you have Scott Jensen who still is awaiting his second criminal felony trial. Then you have Michael Dean from… First Freedoms Foundation, listed as a contact person. Listed as treasurer for the org is Mark Block, the guy that got the stiffest penalty for political campaign violations ever handed down in the state. This new right wing org is also listed on a national directory and it lists Block as also being a contact for the organization…
