Will President Obama win re-election in 2012?
Karl Rove concedes that his chances are pretty good. “I consider him a favorite, albeit a slight favorite,” Rove told Politico. “Republicans underestimate President Obama at their own peril.”
Mike Huckabee, a potential challenger, isn’t among those making that mistake.
“The people that are sitting around saying, ‘He’s definitely going to be a one-term president. It’s going to be easy to take him out,’ they’re obviously political illiterates – political idiots, let me be blunt,” he said.
That may explain why Huckabee and others haven’t been eager to jump into the race. I suspect they’re waiting to see how the coming budget confrontation plays out between Obama and Washington Republicans before making their final “go/no go” decision
At Intrade, “investors” can “invest” in markets trying to determine the chances that Arctic ice in 2011 will be greater than that in 2007 (43 percent), whether physicists will observe the elusive Higgs Boson particle by 2012 (12 percent) or whether the U.S. will adopt a VAT or sales tax this year (25 percent). The people willing to put their money on the line have made Obama almost a two-to-one favorite to win re-election.

(BTW, Sarah Palin is given a 7.4 percent chance of winning the GOP nomination, down from a peak of 28 percent; Herman Cain has a paltry 0.3 percent chance. But as the famous political prognosticator Lloyd Christmas would point out, Cain does have a chance.)

While I love Mr. Rove, I know that he’ll have egg on his face in November 2012. This “president” is by far the most incompetent “leader” in the history of the nation. The majority of the American electorate is learing this fact very fast. With the economy in the tank and continuing to slide, there is no doubt that WE THE PEOPLE will fire the “president.”
The greatest president ever: Lincoln. The greatest president in recent times: Ronald Wilson Reagan. The greatest president who made the best changes: Richard Milhous Nixon. The worst: Barack Hussein Obama. Close to the worst: Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Closer to the worst: President Wilson. Who could replace Barack Hussein Obama? The Honorable Herman Cain. If Herman cannot do it, then who’s next? I would pick the Honorable Speaker Gingrich. If Speaker Gingrich cannot do it, then I would pick the Honorable Governor Mitch Romney. I also heard great things about the Honorable Governor Daniels so he could be a big surprise. But, for now, Herman is the best candidate to take on Lil Hussein.

By some strange coincidence, I’d happened upon a hotair.com (!) link where commenters were arguing over intrade.com information that Nate Silver had repackaged. In that case, the topic was 2012 Republican Presidential candidates.

I’ll agree with Rove. Huckabee’s never been a favorite of mine. An Obama win won’t be a problem as long as there are checks and balances. A GOP majority in the house will do just fine.
I watched a bit of Huckabee last night. He had a black minister and a Latino fella. Seems they’re a bit put out with Obama’s recent “stand” (if you can call it that) on DOMA. 82% of blacks want marriage defined in traditional terms (one man/one woman). Latinos favor it by 65%. Whites? 55%.

Almost any Republican with enough guts to call-out Obama on his record would win – IF – the electorate would listen. Therein lies the issue; the electorate does not listen. “Jay Walking” is a prime example of why there should be a test to pass before voting. Knowing that won’t ever happen, we are left with a process where the biggest bull $hiter gets the votes, and thus far Obama outpaces them all.

@AmVet — The Honorable President George Walker Bush will be appreciated in a few years when his library is built. People will attend the library in droves as they learn about the tough choices he had to make as commander-in-chief. No one has done more for the survival of Western civilization thatn GW Bush. He is a man of honor, character, decency, dignity and respect while Hussein Obama is the total opposite. Again, even the Libyan dictator knows that Hussein Obama is a Kenyan muslim anti-colonialist. If anyone wants to argue about where Hussein Obama was born, just ask, “Where’s the true longform birth certificate? What does Hussein Obama have to hide?” I’m totally serious. Some of you out there are laughing, but this is a matter of national security and it seems to me that so many of you have your heads in the sand!
Oh, I forgot to add Jimmah Carter in my list of the worst presidents. Who can ever forget that embarrassment — my bad. Most of our problems today can be traced back to Jimmah and then a few years later, Bubba. Jimmah created most of the economic mess for us while Bubbah Clinton let the jihadists run wild while his pants were down around his ankles.

Good morning all. Defeating a previously elected president is a rarity. Since 1888 it has happened three times (1912, 1980, 1992) and all three times there was a significant third-party candidate. Americans hate to admit that they made a big mistake. So unless we have high unemployment (ala 1992) or seemingly uncontrollable inflation (ala 1980), Chauncey could well be re-elected.
The most significant event that could defeat him would be if the Supreme Court ruled Obamacare “constitutional” – I suspect that the population, inflamed, would rise up to throw him out.

I’m not. At least half of the Black community shares values consistent with the conservative part of America. I think it would be a real stretch to anoint Obama a 2 to 1 favorite, given the mid-term election results, the Republican governor pick up in swing states, the Independent shift and the Democrats lost ground in purple states. I think Rove calls it right when he says that Obama is a slight favorite. He’s the incumbent and that would make him a slight favorite but by no means a shoe in. It will really depend on who gets the Republican nomination.

Bozo conveniently loped off about 2M of those on the unemployment roles as those “who had just given up looking”, to get his magic 9%. He is still about a percent shy of what he needs. Who knows what kind of ploy he will come up with next to spin the numbers. There has never been a sitting president who was re-elected with unemployment above 8%. Perhaps Bozo will break new ground. BTW, while you have been across the pond, we still have one in ten houses that are vacant, foreclosures at an all time high and that pesky 9% just won’t seem to go down, no matter how much of other people’s money that we throw at it.

Interesting debate.
Bill Orvis – “This “president” is by far the most incompetent “leader” in the history of the nation.”
But that has nothing to do with his ability to marshall a majority in the Electoral College. The following presidents knowingly, on purpose, signed huge deficit spending bills into law and were re-elected: Reagan, Clinton and Bush 43. The voters believed those 3 presidents were doing the right thing by “giving away the store”. So they were re-elected. The mind of the American voter is elusive.
Ragnar – “The most significant event that could defeat him would be if the Supreme Court ruled Obamacare “constitutional” – I suspect that the population, inflamed, would rise up to throw him out.”
I would disagree. The heart of Obamacare does not go into effect until 2014, well after the election. Voters have always had a difficult time getting their arms around something as nebulous as a bill set to go into effect in 25 months. History shows that the American voter rarely looks in to the future past tomorrow and rarely looks into the past beyond yesterday.
I agree with Ragnar’s assesment of the recent historical evidence that points to an Obama re-election. In 2008 Obama received 146 electoral votes from states he carried by 60% of the popular vote (McCain only 28 in same formula). All Obama needs is those “safe” 146 electoral votes and 123 more and he is re-elected with the 269 votes needed. Remember, Obama received 365 electoral votes in 2008, 96 more than the needed amount.
But 19 months is an eternity in politics. My recomendation is to keep your money in your pocket for at least another year.

But as a side note, let’s raise taxes on haircuts and oil changes — yeah, that’ll work.
Boehner in charge is only going to make Obama look good.

It seems that every time we raise taxes, there is some pressing crucial need to fix an immediate problem, but when the problem is solved and the economy perks up, those that make decisions never seen to lower those same taxes back to pre crisis levels. Just more of other people’s money to spend. We are up to 42% of spending/GDP now. The only time in our history that this ratio was greater was when we were fighting WWII, at about 51% but quickly came down following the war. We have been on a steady upward path of increasing this ration since 1950. We work now until mid April to pay our taxes. Soon it will be May, then June if this crazy upward spiral continues. Doesn’t that concern you tax and spenders or do we just leave that to the next generation?

“Pregnant women should be told that having an abortion is safer than continuing a pregnancy, health experts have said.
Guidelines drawn up by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) for doctors, nurses and counsellors involved in terminations, state that “women should be advised that abortion is generally safer than continuing a pregnancy to term.”
Perhaps controversially, the draft guidelines also say that women should also be informed that “most women who have abortions do not experience adverse psychological sequelae” as a result of the procedure itself, but are related to pre-existing mental health conditions.
The guidelines have been drawn up by a working group made up of members from the RCOG, the Royal College of General Practitioners, the British Pregnancy Advisory Service and Marie Stopes International.”

That may well be the case, but polls, and the American public, are very fickle. I researched Harry Truman and his name was mud when he left office. Now he has a very favorable approval. And without a college degree (especially the Ivy league variety) to boot. JFK was one who was revered, but a more objective look shows flaws like any other President. The Bay of Pigs was a disgrace. Also, imagine if a POTUS nowadays appointed his brother Attorney General.

If you disliked Bush that much then perhaps it’s time for some introspection. The GOP, according to you, offered a terrible candidate, yet the best you could trot out was Al Gore and John Kerry? The Democrats have a long history to offering unelectable candidates:
‘72 – McGovern got creamed by Nixon
‘80 – Reagan destroyed Carter in a landslide
‘84 – Walter Mondale? (although he was better than his successors)
‘88 – Dukakis? BAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Actually I believe you’re missing the point about Obama just a little.
Far from allowing him to run amok, four more years will in fact give him ample time to implement his left-right fusion agenda, the results of which will be incalculable. Perhaps inertia will be permanently enshrined as our government’s modus operandi. Or, to envision what this future might look like, perhaps we ought to turn to science fiction. Maybe Obama will be the Jeff Goldblum and the country will be his fly, destined for monstrous deformation in a fusion project of radically opposed species.

A lot of Blue States and major urban centers are broke or going broke. They’re all-in for Obama and the Dems, because they ultimately can’t survive without huge bailouts. Bookman and the AJC want you and me to pay their debts and for their failure to govern wisely. They want us to pay to enable the Al Gore’s of the world to reap windfall profits off trades in carbon markets they will invent and rig. They, the abortionists and abortion apologists, want control of our health care and hospice decisions. They have their sites set on our 401K investments. They want open borders and amnesty for millions of illegal aliens. Obama is their straw man/front man. Look again at the economic and infrastructure decay in the Blue States and the major Democratic urban centers. This is your future if you vote Democratic and for Obama. Pretty clear choice.

The US flew nearly $12bn in shrink-wrapped $100 bills into Iraq, then distributed the cash with no proper control over who was receiving it and how it was being spent.
The staggering scale of the biggest transfer of cash in the history of the Federal Reserve has been graphically laid bare by a US congressional committee.
In the year after the invasion of Iraq in 2003 nearly 281 million notes, weighing 363 tonnes, were sent from New York to Baghdad for disbursement to Iraqi ministries and US contractors.

Generally an incumbent president is pretty hard to beat when running for re-lection unless the challenging party has an unusually strong candidate, which the Republicans don’t. Obama effectively has one year to turn around unemployment, the housing market, bankrupcty of the state and local government, and prove that the world is a safer place to be than when he became President. Without those accomplishments, the Democratic party will lose the Senate and have further losses in the house. His threat isn’t from the Republican party, but rather from his own party which may revolt at his inability to solve the major issues of the day. Sure, if the Republicans are stupid and nominate someone who is too far to the right, they may lose. That is what Rove has been saying for months. It’s not going to be anyone but Obama. The electoric in 2012 will be voting out of desperation for leadership not change. If the Democratics and Obama can’t resolve the budge deficit problem along with Medicare and Social Security before 2012, that will be a major demonstration of a lack of leadership. People are angry and some have loss hope and faith in this government doing the right thing.

If a Republican candidate for president does so much as looks to the left, he’ll get canned. That’s how far right the Republican party has gone. Your best choice is a re-run. McCain/Palin. There is a dynamic coming up in the next few months that could change the odds of an Obama re-election.
What is he going to do about cutting the deficit? Does he fight Republicans in the House? Does he let Harry Reid do his dirty work in the Senate?
Right now, the public really does care about spending, and they are in a much different mood than they were in 1995, with a much more capable President in the White House. If Hope & Change stonewalls cuts and the government gets shut down because of his actions, the GOP isn’t going to be seen as the bad guys this time around.
Could affect his re-election chances, even with the increased turnout of the Dumbest Generation (18-25 year olds) in 2012.

If gas goes to $4/gal, perhaps this time you’ll pay attention to what triggered the last collapse. The housing bubble was a victim of it, not the cause, and all you mental midgets haven’t been paying attention to WHY people could no longer pay their mortgage at the same point in time.
And there are still morons on here thinking $5 gas would be the best thing that ever happened to us because it would force us all to walk to work or use mass transit. Here’s a clue for you…. There wouldn’t be any work to walk to and there wouldn’t be any public funds to increase mass transit capability.

dB – this bears repeating:
The US flew nearly $12bn in shrink-wrapped $100 bills into Iraq, then distributed the cash with no proper control over who was receiving it and how it was being spent.
The staggering scale of the biggest transfer of cash in the history of the Federal Reserve has been graphically laid bare by a US congressional committee.
In the year after the invasion of Iraq in 2003 nearly 281 million notes, weighing 363 tonnes, were sent from New York to Baghdad for disbursement to Iraqi ministries and US contractors.
oh, yeah … those GOPpers are fiscal GEEEEEENyusses – great way to run a war
Now the statement about disbursement to US Contractors is not true and the second statement from you about GOPpers sp has nothing to do with the topic at hand. The US was returning Iraqi surplus funds – BACK to the Iraqi government. You’re the one that decided to spin it another way.

Well, I see that Rome burns while every blogger explains. Our wonderful USA, that is.
Obama, not a bad man but a bad president, will be elected if one of the following men of leadership is not put forth by Republicans. We who love this country wish to see one of the following as president: DR. ROBERT M. GATES, GENERAL PETRAEUS or former governor JEB BUSH.
Any one of those three could be our next great president. They have already proved their abilities. Not one has agreed to accept the presidential challenge.. Republicans must beg, pray, promise, that one of those three would run. We need a real president, a man who can lead this country to further greatness. Right now, we have an advisor run conglomerate in the Oval Office. All we need is one strong man.

Dems are disgusting….
The continuing resolution must win approval in the House and Senate — so things could still fall apart — but the agreement on a bottom line suggests the government won’t shut down on Friday.
Republicans and some Democrats say Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and top lieutenant Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) staked out shaky turf from the start by saying they weren’t willing to shave a dollar from the budget over the short term.
“What’s the use of a hard line if you’re going to back off it in two minutes? These guys are the worst at playing chicken that I’ve ever seen,” a senior Democratic aide said of Senate party leaders. “They get in the car to play chicken; they go in reverse.”

Yep Dave, I think it’s the blowback from 14 consecutive seasons of October ball, but only getting one championship.
I did go to a game once at Fenway. (I worked for a company headquartered in Framingham) It was great fun, but was one of those endless games with about eight pitching changes and it took forever! And though it was late summer, I damn near froze my rear end off.
The upshot, we all went out partying until the wee hours and the next day when I flew back to the ATL, I was so sick with the flu or something that I could barely make it home. Little old ladies in walkers were zooming by me!
Good times, though…

It’s sad, but I just feel the GOP doesn’t have any viable options against Obama. Most of them are either already on the lunatic fringe of the party or are moving closer and closer to that point (which was what killed McCain’s chances for me in ‘08 – if he had just stayed true to his beliefs and not nominated Sarah Palin as his VP he likely would have had my vote).

Leggie: Read again: I mentioned her LAST two raises, ie not ALL raises since 2009, and the TOTAL increase since 2009.
Oh, and you need to check YOU math lol. She got a 7.5% a couple months ago. Then she got a 3.5% increase. The 3.5% increase was based on her salary AFTER she got the 7.5% increase. So in essence the total raise from her base salary from 2 months ago was more than 11%. I’d have to look at the actual numbers to get the precise percentage but it’s more like 12 or 13 percent.
Which is good because when she was negotiating it I wanted her to ask for 10%. Good thing she didn’t listen to me THAT time lol.

It’s been so long that we’ve had an effective President that people have forgotten what a leader can do. Obama let Congress write most of his legislation. Effective Presidents submitt their own bills. We need a budget that is reasonable. We need need a President who every day is doing something to get jobs for Americans, not watching them go to China and elsewhere. We need a program that corrects the housing collapse before foreigners buy up all of the homes in the US because they are dirt cheap and we pay rent to them, as is happening in Florida with Canadians. Presidential power is limited, but in Obama’s situation he has given it over to the Democratic leadership of the House and Senate.

Subject: Fw: Budget Cutting
The President ordered the cabinet to cut $100 million from the $3.5
trillion federal budget.
I’m so impressed by this sacrifice that I have decided to do the same
thing with my personal budget. I spend about $4,000 a month on groceries,
household expenses, medicine, utilities, etc, but it’s time to get out the
budget cutting axe, go through my expenses, and cut back.
I’m going to cut my spending at exactly the same ratio, 1/35,000 of my
total budget. After doing the math, it looks like instead of spending $4000
a month; I’m going to have to cut that number by 12 cents. Yes, I’m going
to have to get by with $3,999.88, but that’s what sacrifice is all about.
I’ll just have to do without some things, that are, frankly, luxuries.
(Did the president actually think no one would do the math?)

It doesn’t help them that that their candidates are caricatures….Herman Cain (Fred Sanford), Sarah Palin (Ellie Mae Clampett), Mike Huckabee (Gomer Pyle),

Uh, Vance, Republican bumper sticker ignorance? Which party relied on catchy, bumper-sticker worthy phrases like “Yes We Can” and “Change We Can Believe In” to get a novice politician whose only executive experience was as a community organizer elected?
How are Cain, Palin, and Huckabee anything like the “caricatures” (I presume you meant characters) of Fred Sanford, Ellie Mae Clampett, or Gomer Pyle?
Dems won’t gain in the Senate. The Senate race is in the GOP’s favor because 2006 was a Democratic wave year that narrowly ousted Republicans and propped up many weak Dems who might have otherwise been defeated.

Dear Woodstock Mike: I did not vote for Obama but can name a number of significant accomplishments:
1. Only presidential candidate to promise he would get us out of the quagmire GW Bush and the neocons got us into in Iraq without cutting and running and to actually accomplish that goal (unlike Eisenhower who gave up in Korea, Nixon and Ford who led us to defeat in Vietrnam; Reagan who turned tail and ran in Lebanon letting Hezbollah get away with killing 250 Marines and GW Bush who ler Sadaam stay in power at the end of the Gulf War -all notable Republican failures.)
2. he ended the worst economic crisis since the depression without a total collapse of the banking industry and loss of American auto manufacturing;
3. he passed a health care program to deal with Reagan’s unfunded mandate called EMTALA that was a socialist requirement that paying patients pay for all uninsured and nonpaying patients who show up for treatment causing hospitals acrooss the country to close;
4. More terrorist plots have been stopped under him than under George Bush who ignored warnings repeatedly before 9-11;
5. he did not raise taxes;
6. Obama has a secretary of defense, a secretary of the treasury and a secretary of state who gain respect throughout the world;
7. His opponents all are a bunch of clowns and has beens.

independent thinker –Thanks for the chuckles. You forgot:
BROKEN campaign promises and bringing change to Washington
• The national debt rose above $13 trillion dollars, up $1.7 trillion in just one year.
• Rarely does a politician get caught in such a blatant break of a campaign promise as President Obama did with his “I’ll put health care negotiations on C-SPAN” pledge. Obama had promised at least eight times during his run for presidency that he would do so
• Nearly $6 million in stimulus money was paid to two firms run by Mark Penn, Hillary Clinton’s pollster in 2008. Federal records show that $5.97 million from the $787 billion stimulus helped preserve THREE (3) jobs at Burson-Marsteller, the global public-relations/communications firm headed by Penn.
• Obama entered office, vowing he would do what George W. Bush had not: lead the world to a global climate accord.
• White House said “Pass the stimulus bill and unemployment won’t go above 8.2%, it’s now 9.8%”
• Recipients of federal stimulus dollars have overstated the number of jobs created or saved in GA by more than 1,500, according to an AJC analysis of public records
• Quote: “I will promise you this, that if we have not gotten our troops out by the time I am president, it is the first thing I will do. I will get our troops home. We will bring an end to this war….You can take that to the bank!”
• Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac need more than $30 BILLION more taxpayer dollars
• the White House is NOT for sale
• Transparency
• bipartisan support
• close Gitmo
• Timmy the TAX CHEAT Geitner
• ACORN
• find Osama bin Laden
• NO lobbyist on the White House staff
• all bills put on line so the public can read them first
• no tax increase for anyone making less than $250K
• ….What happened to “if you’re happy with your health plan you can keep it?
More than 3 million seniors may have to switch their Medicare prescription plan next year, even if they’re perfectly happy with it. “As a result of this policy, there are going to be fewer plans offered in 2011.”
Back in September President Obama challenged Republicans to “not hold middle-class tax cuts hostage any longer” and derided continued tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent of the country. “We are ready, this week,” the president said, “to give tax cuts to every American making $250,000 or less.”

@BOW- bless your heart and newt gingrich’s heart if he makes president– and Lord please preserve the USA if that happens. 95% of your post is… whatever it is, but the newt portion is the worse. have you been around for the last 25 years? oh, but yeah, you seem the type to have contributed to the country’s woes for the last 200 years.

A sock puppet could beat Obama in November 2012. We’ve had about enough “change”.

@tlamar. Reagan was a great president who toppled communism and inspired America. He loved America, he defended it voraciously and he was optimistic. Exactly what America needed in a recession.
Contrast that with the community organizer. He clearly does not love America, I’ve never heard him say it,. He wants to change America into his personal socialist eutopia. He does not inspire the right people. He has inspired the entitlement crowd, but they don’t create jobs. obama is the opposite of what we need in a recession.

Glenn’s post actually indicates where the mindset of your average voter is who isn’t along party lines. Republicans, you need to get your act together and LISTEN to your constituency to find out what they really want, and then DO IT. Don’t get into Washington and call whatever votes you get a “mandate” to do things that only your base wants.
