A tribute to natural talent for the Travelin’ Music home

A lot of singers — not all, these days, but a lot — have good voices. But every once in a while you hear a gift so unique that it makes you pay attention immediately. Aretha was such a voice. Barbra Streisand was such a voice. Dinah Washington too.

And now Adele.

BTW, this one is dedicated to Miss Julie. Yesterday we marked our 32nd year as husband and wife, with many more to come, I’m sure.

fer sure I thought you’d fire up some early 80’s Tom Petty in honor of Wisconsin Governor Walker…

from the chorus: “…and it wasn’t no way to carry on, it wasn’t no way to live, but he could put up with it for a little while, he was working on something big” and the final verse: “…and one said ‘I know I’ve seen his face, I wonder who he is’ and the other said, ‘he’s probably just another clown, workin’ on something big’…”

I think the most naturally strong and pure set of pipes I have ever heard in my life was when I was cycling on a South Georgia county maintained road in the area that I live in some years ago. A child, who sounded female and around 8-9 years of age, was somewhere in the back of the shack in which they lived belting out some religious song. The child was absolutely gifted. I have listened to one hell of a lot of music in my life but that child’s voice left a lifelong impression on me. A couple of years after I heard her I went back by that place and the building had collapsed and there was no one there. Talent is handed out in mysterious ways and I hope that that little girl will someday make the transition from shack dweller to artist. But I don’t hold out much hope for her.

I don’t really like the direction that any music is taking these days. The music business used to be run by musicians who knew nothing about business. Now it’s run by businessmen who know nothing about music; it’s lost its soul.

Now we all can run computers and we all can dance.
We all have Calvin Klein written on our underpants.
And at 6 o’clock like robots we turn on the news.
And watch those-world countries deal out more abuse.
Remember the first man on the moon.
Kids of the Baby Boom.

Kids of the Baby Boom,
We have freedom, we have money.
Baby Boom, here in the land of milk and honey.
Counting our chickens way too soon.
Kids of the Baby Boom.

As our lives become a capsule we send to the stars,
Our children look at us like we came from Mars.
As the farms disappear and the skies turns black,
We’re a nation full of takers, never giving back.
We never stop to think what we consume.
Kids of the Baby Boom.

Kids of the Baby Boom.
We have freedom, we have money.
Baby Boom, here in the land of milk and honey.
Counting our chickens way too soon.
Kids of the Baby Boom.

Our optimism mingles with the doom.
Kids of the Baby Boom.

Dear Lib. Friends:

O’Reilly had some interesting points at the start of his program tonight as follows:

1) He showed a video of Obama during the campaign PROMISING to walk the picket line as President for any workers having their collective bargaining tampered with.

He ain’t done that.

Why?

2) He supervises a federal work force of over 2 million people who have ZERO collective bargaining rights (nor should they in my opinion) and he has done NOTHING about it.

He can’t picket for state workers and then defend not pushing collective bargaining for all government workers.

You know …………. workers have RIGHTS !

Man has he boxed himself into a corner. The statement by White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett is halarious !

“President Obama’s Promised March With Union Workers Fails to Materialize”
By Eve Zibel

Published February 25, 2011

“When candidate Obama was campaigning in South Carolina in 2007, he said he was proud to wear the “union label” and that if workers were denied rights to organize or collectively bargain when he was elected, “I’ll put on a comfortable pair of shoes myself, I’ll will walk on that picket line with you as president of the United States of America.”

But as the protests over collective bargaining rights drag out in Wisconsin, President Obama has yet to join the demonstrators outside the Capitol building in Madison, and it appears his administration is trying not to get involved in the fight.

White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett says what’s happening in Wisconsin is not a national fight. “Let’s not turn what’s really a Wisconsin issue into a Washington issue,” Jarrett told Fox News in an interview Tuesday.”

Want to see another thing that liberalism has done to this country?

“Oregon Inmates Win Claims for Lost Sunglasses, Pictures — Even Porn”

Taxpayers in Oregon may be surprised to know they dish out an average of $60,000 a year to compensate inmates who claim prison officials damaged or lost things like their sunglasses, their TV – even their porn.

This year inmate Todd Ritchey was awarded $260 for a television he said was damaged during a search of his cell, Nathan Bennett got $125 for 250 pages of pornography he said were improperly confiscated from his cell and the state was ordered to pay Curtis W. Bevan $1,000 after he said six photo albums disappeared during his prison transfer.”

Prisoners should not have t.v. (certainly a private one) and they can read the classics.

“The next wave of Al Qaeda recruits are born or educated right in the United States. Most are just old enough to remember 9/11, yet a decade a later they are turning their back on the United States.

The threat posed by this new generation of terrorists was underscored this week by the case of Khalid Aldawsari, a 20-year-old Saudi national who came to the United States legally in 2008 to attend college in Texas. If that were true, then that is proof (on the same order as Inhofe’s construction of an igloo proves that global warming is not real) that government employees in every single state that utilized stimulus money are extremely overpaid. Therefore, the only logical course of remedial action is to fire every government worker in every state that accepted stimulus money and hire cheap illegal immigrants, that are known to work for a fraction of that while generating significantly more output, to replace each and every one of them.

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2011/02/26/sports/AP-OLY-IOC-Womens-Ski-Jumping.html?hp

Women’s ski jumping is edging closer to the Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee refused to admit the women to the 2010 Vancouver Games but IOC member Gunilla Lindberg praised the quality of jumping at the Nordic world skiing championships.

Daniela Iraschko of Austria won gold on Friday.

“I am impressed with what I have seen,” Lindberg said. “The level among female ski jumpers is high, and the progress made during the last two years has been enormous.”

The IOC will decide on the sport’s Olympic future in April after reviewing Friday’s event.

Lindberg said it was satisfying to see 43 nations represented in a final that took place in thick fog and strong wind at the Holmenkollen venue.

Here’s hoping the IOC do the right thing in April.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/26/opinion/26sat1.html?hp

And the supine Democrats who try to go-along-to-get-along with these misogynist thugs are little better.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Republicans in the House of Representatives are mounting an assault on women’s health and freedom that would deny millions of women access to affordable contraception and life-saving cancer screenings and cut nutritional support for millions of newborn babies in struggling families. And this is just the beginning.
The budget bill pushed through the House last Saturday included the defunding of Planned Parenthood and myriad other cuts detrimental to women. It’s not likely to pass unchanged, but the urge to compromise may take a toll on these programs. And once the current skirmishing is over, House Republicans are likely to use any legislative vehicle at hand to continue the attack.
[...]
In negotiations over the health care bill last year, Democrats agreed to a scheme intended to stop insurance companies from offering plans that cover abortions. Two bills in the Republican House would go even further in denying coverage to the 30 percent or so of women who have an abortion during child-bearing years.
One of the bills, offered by Representative Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania, has a provision that would allow hospitals receiving federal funds to refuse to terminate a pregnancy even when necessary to save a woman’s life.
Beyond the familiar terrain of abortion or even contraception, House Republicans would inflict harm on low-income women trying to have children or who are already mothers.
Their continuing resolution would cut by 10 percent the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, better known as WIC, which serves 9.6 million low-income women, new mothers, and infants each month, and has been linked in studies to higher birth weight and lower infant mortality.
The G.O.P. bill also slices $50 million from the block grant supporting programs providing prenatal health care to 2.5 million low-income women and health care to 31 million children annually. President Obama’s budget plan for next year calls for a much more modest cut.
That CBO report states that stimulus programs had the following effects in the fourth quarter of 2010:
– They raised real (inflation-adjusted) gross domestic product (GDP) by between 1.1 percent and 3.5 percent,
– Lowered the unemployment rate by between 0.7 percentage points and 1.9 percentage points,
– Increased the number of people employed by between 1.3 million and 3.5 million, and
– Increased the number of full-time-equivalent jobs by 1.8 million to 5.0 million compared with what would have occurred otherwise, as shown in Table 1. (Increases in FTE jobs include shifts from part-time to full-time work or overtime and are thus generally larger than increases in the number of employed workers).
But I don’t know how they can take those numbers and generate this apparently farcical cost-per-job figure. If you divide the $821 billion cost by the 3.5 million more people employed in the fourth quarter, for example, you get $234,571 per job, which is at least in the neighborhood of the reported figure. If you divide the $821 billion cost by the 5 million FTEs, you get $164,000 per job.
However, both are statistically fraudulent and essentially meaningless way to do it. It requires you to pretend that all $821 billion was spent in the fourth quarter of last year to produce those 3.5 million jobs or 5 million FTEs, when in reality only a small fraction of it was spent in that time frame. (The stimulus money started to flow in 2009 and peters out in 2012).
According to the CBO, the stimulus produced a high-end annual average of 1.3 million FTEs in 2009, 4.8 million in 2010, another 3.7 million this year and then just 0.7 million in 2012, as it winds down. So I don’t know a statistically valid way of adding up all the jobs created by the stimulus over several years, then divided by the total amount spent over several years, to produce a valid cost-per-job figure.
Maybe the CBO doesn’t know either, because contrary to the impression some have left, I see no evidence that CBO has tried to produce such a statistic.
I suppose you could add up the annual FTEs saved/created over each of the four years of the program, then divide it by the total amount spent on the stimulus. Adding the CBO FTE estimates from 2009-2012 produces 10.5 million “job years,” divided into the $821 billion cost, which brings you to an ANNUAL cost of $78,190 per job.
But I’m certainly not trying to sell THAT as the right figure either, because again, I’m not sure a right figure can be had.
But if Dave R. has a source that explains it to us, I’d love to see it.
I think we need to be very clear about what we’re up against here. These are the people that House Republicans are pandering to, and they’ve laid out exactly the world they want, and it’s one where women who have sex give up any right to decent health care, be it STD prevention, contraception, safe maintenance of miscarriages or abortion as needed. (Lesbianism is no dodge, either, because they sure as [heck] don’t want lesbians to have rights.) The world they want is a bleak one indeed, especially for women, but also for the children who depend on women and the majority of men who don’t hate women.
and sfd, I see where Marcotte cites state Rep. Bobby Franklin’s abortion bill here in Georgia as a primary piece of evidence in her essay. I really don’t think that’s fair.
Franklin is considered the fringe of the fringe, even among his fellow Republicans in the Legislature. He is almost always the sole sponsor of his nutty suggestions, and nobody takes them seriously. I think it’s very unfair to cite his bills as evidence applicable to the GOP as a whole, because it is really just applicable to Bobby Franklin.
Jay, if you take the projected total cost of the stimulus, $821 billion, and multiply that by 0.7 (the report states that 70 percent had been spent by the end of 2010) and divide that by the total FTE jobs through the end of 2010 (taken from the end of one of the tables) you can come up with some good sounding but bogus job cost estimates that are in the ball park of those given by Dave R. However, I also could not find the numbers that he presented.
Mornin’ or Afternoon, er’rbody…..
DIdn’t hang around to see what all was posted, but I know there were some choice cuts laid down. I can see the politics got to flying early this am. Personally, I don’t know what the stimulus saved or didn’t save. I have a gut feeling that we would be a lot better off had both TARP and the stimulus funds been put to where they could be most effective.
TARP could have been done as a credit to a bank from a taxpayer to be used exclusively for their mortgage. Let the homeowner apply the payment to their tax returns as income earned and split it over a course of years as to keep the taxpayer from being hammered by a huge tax bill at once. The outcome would have been that the banks would have still gotten the money, however the mortgages would no longer be toxic.
The stimulus should have been larger to have any kind of effect. You’re talking less than 1 trillion spending with a GDP the size of ours. That’s not enough to affect GDP or the economy at all.
BOSTON (AP) – “The owners of a Boston nightclub issued a public apology and agreed Friday to pay a $30,000 fine to settle allegations that it abruptly shut down an event after the annual Harvard-Yale football game because most of the attendees were black.
Some students said they were turned away from the November event after employees at the Cure Lounge complained that a large group of young black people in line would attract “local gangbangers.”
Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley called the club staff’s behavior “the essence of racial stereotyping” and said it violated public accommodations and consumer protection laws.
“Massachusetts businesses cannot refuse to host events because of racial reasons,” Coakley said. “In this case, club staff made harmful and ill-conceived conclusions based on the simple fact that most of the guests were black.”
Recoveraable US oil, including Alaska, the continental shelf, etc.—134 billion barrels. US daily oil usage: 21 million barrels per day, or 7,665,000,000 barrels per year. By my reckoning, that’s enough to last for 17.63 years, if all were recovered. Want to give me a clue about this new oil find that only you know about?
Uh no. There is no comparison here. Given what was happening I would have said to go in sooner. However, the world of today is not the world of violent actions solving every problem. The people in these countries are doing the job for themselves.
And if I was your neighbor md, and I saw a way to help prevent an invasion of your home I would definitely be there to help. Can you see the difference between an outside invasion force and a revolt from within? I wouldn’t be holding your kids down if they decided to revolt against you and throw you out of your own home. It would be weird and wrong, but it isn’t my place to go solve your family problems. If the police need to be called for domestic disturbance, I would. But beyond that only an invasion of your home would prompt me getting involved in the way you’re suggesting.
Facts overshadowed in debate over union bill
The central part of Walker’s argument is that government workers have long escaped painful cuts that those in the private sector have had to bear. That ignores the fact that under Walker’s predecessor, Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle, state workers were forced to take furlough days that amounted to a 3 percent pay cut. State employees have also not had a raise for more than two years.
Even so, Walker has portrayed public employees as the “haves” and private workers as the “have nots,” saying government workers can afford trims to their salaries and benefits because on average they earn more than private-sector workers.
This is true as a straight average, but several national reports of public versus private pay say it’s also misleading.
In a report released in December 2010, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the average state/local government worker earns $40.10 an hour in salary and benefits. The same report found the average private worker earns $27.68 an hour in salary and benefits.
But the report was quick to note that this is not a direct comparison. Government workers tend to be better-educated than their private-sector counterparts, and government jobs are more likely to be professional or managerial as opposed to the many more manufacturing and sales jobs in the private work force.
In fact, studies that compare salaries and benefits for similar jobs between the public and private sectors show that government workers lag.
Of course, nobody wants to see China as a superpower. However, if/while we are going to be the world’s superpower, we should not overreach in our desire to see democracy spread. We should only act when asked, and then only to protect the defenseless. We don’t have to put boots on the ground anytime there’s commotion inside someone’s borders. We do not want outside interference in our dispute between the GOP and organized labor, so I think we should not always stick our head into the disputes in other countries.
Whoa! That’ll be almost impossible to find!! It’s hard to even find cloth that’s manufactured in the US ( I think @@ once told me that her father-in-law once worked at a very profitable textile mill here in Georgia but that mill has since now transferred to someplace overseas).
Impossible task you’re seeking. The jobs that have left are not coming back. The only way that happens is if you lower labor costs here to less what it costs to make and ship back now. Unless you’re seeking $2 a day wages, those jobs are not going to see US soil again.
On the other hand, if you persuade Congress to do away with all the free trade agreements and re-institute tarriffs on imports, there’s a slight chance that jobs could return here. That would only happen if it becomes cheaper to manufacture here as opposed to importing things.
The C-130 Hercules planes, carrying Britons and other nationals, safely landed in Malta after picking up the civilians south of the eastern Libyan port of Benghazi, Defense Secretary Liam Fox said.
The rescue mission was bold because few planes have been able to fly through Libyan air space. It was not immediately clear if it was a British special forces mission, but the government has not ruled out using the SAS to evacuate Libyan oil fields and rescue trapped Britons.
Our industrial base (steel, autos, clothes, etc.) moved out of the US for two reasons; number one, because of high labor costs (compared to the rest of the world) we cannot make products here that are low enough in cost for our American “Dollar Store” loving public to buy. Number two, it was because of corporate greed. Both hold just as much responsibility in the demise of our industrial base as the other and we can’t have it both ways. The reality is that we cannot have high wages for industrial labor and expect to have low priced items on the store shelves. There are laborers in the world that work for $2.50/day and are proud to get it and they make products that all of us over here enjoy because of their low costs. The real problem with the industrial situation the US now is that the Amercian consumer wants cheap stuff but yet we expect to be paid premium wages and benefits way, way beyond what the rest of the world is willing to accept to produce products. I can only laugh at the public worker unions equivocating themselves with the struggles of the real labor unions (Iron Workers, Boilermakers, Carpenters, Laborers). If the public union members met the the private union members on the street, they wouldn’t spit on them. There is no place for public service unions in this country.
Nice to see that Bookman and others actually did their homework on the misspent stimulus money.
Here’s some other fodder to chew on: Some jobs “saved or created” were faked. Case in point; a little known project (unless you’ve driven it as I have for the past 5 years) improving the I-84 corridor through the north-eastern Pennsylvania area of Wilkes-Barre / Scranton. That project was started 5 years ago, long before the ARRA was even considered. Now, most people should know that Federal road projects aren’t begun unless funding is in place to fully complete the project, so bottom-line, this project was already fully funded.
What happened after the stimulus bill was passed? Those expensive and much-ballyhooed signs touting “This project made possible by the ARRA, etc, etc, etc” began showing up on the I-84 corridor! Jobs were SAVED! Jobs were CREATED!
My Doctors told me to talk to anybody who was willing to listen about ‘Nam…but there were few who were willing…
Dad and I got drunk together summer of ‘70…I had just got out of a hospital, and we talked a little about our war experiences. Jungles or the sands of Normandy, it doesn’t matter, it’s all a unnatural hell. We cried that night together…and I must admit, the healing began between us then.
Mick – “grit” doesn’t even begin to describe my uncle – the guy is 92 and has been out shoveling the drive each and every snow they’ve had this year (in NY) – not to mention, he took care of his mom until the day she died – he’s amazing
apropos of nothing in particular, I happened to notice that, few weeks back, hotair.com actually saw fit to use 538 Nate Silver’s charts for the betting-man’s take on 2012 Republican Presidential candidates.
(I thought it was interesting in a strange-bedfellows kinda way, although I’ve always asserted that Nate strives for neutrality in his polling analysis.)
As for Frank Buckles, it seems he thoroughly enjoyed his accidental-celebrity status, and enjoyed talking about the part he played serving in the first World War. Sounds like the best possible way for this man to close that last chapter; I’m very happy for him, today, strange as that may sound.
I think md is right on the money. Just a few of our fighters could sweep & keep the skies clean.
If I am not mistaken, the rebels have already asked for that but
If we can afford to send a few fighters to enforce a no fly zone over the ME every time there’s an uprising, then we really don’t have a serious debt problem, do we? Or is it just that any military action is exempt from the debt?
I’m perplexed about this whole budget thing. We hear that basically, the sky is falling because of our budget. At the same time, we’re supposed to send our military over to aid uprisings in the ME. Before I get accused, I firmly believe that someone has to help protect the innocent from dictators turning their military forces against civilians. My question is, does it always have to be the USA?
We’re accomplishing what the USSR couldn’t do to us. We’re going to militarily spend ourselves into oblivion if we’re not careful.
As I said before, the planes are already out and about and being paid for……….I would think priorities would be necessary in situations of life and death……………..but that seems to be just me and a few others around here.
Instead, we’ll throw away more money paying for healthcare of all the diehard self proclaimed thugs on the nations streets………….
That explanation, I can reason and agree with. Personally, I think we should start charging a “protection fee”. If we’re going to be police of the world, we should earn something tangible from it.
“Personally, I think we should start charging a “protection fee”. If we’re going to be police of the world, we should earn something tangible from it.”
No argument from me on that one………whoever we “protect” absolutely should share the burden.
But, considering we allow folks to choose not to pay taxes in our own country, I won’t hold my breath on this ever happening.
No to the idea of a protection fee. Are we really going to demand a “pizzo” from countries?
Here’s a thought: Does anyone remember what happened when we “helped” in Cuba? How about when we “helped” in Afghanistan so many years ago? What about when we “helped” in Iran? We created nations of dictators.
We should STAY OUT OF IT. Our meddling leads to results we DON’T like more than it leads to results we DO like. We have no business running around the world and telling everyone how to live. The protests in these middle eastern and Africa countries show us that they can handle it on their own!
