A tribute to natural talent for the Travelin’ Music home

A lot of singers — not all, these days, but a lot — have good voices. But every once in a while you hear a gift so unique that it makes you pay attention immediately. Aretha was such a voice. Barbra Streisand was such a voice. Dinah Washington too.

And now Adele.

BTW, this one is dedicated to Miss Julie. Yesterday we marked our 32nd year as husband and wife, with many more to come, I’m sure.

DNR investigating Eldrin Bell’s elephant ride at circus

My daughter and I rode an elephant once. It was sooooo kewl!!! A kinda lumbering…side to side…to and fro thingy. Propelled us into a circular motion. Busch Gardens, I think it was.

Didn’t know I could die doing it though.

Glad I had the opportunity before the government stepped into it.

Headline: “The AP reports that the British military evacuated 150 people by Libya on Saturday”

“British military planes entered Libyan air space to rescue oil workers and others from desert locations Saturday in a daring and secret mission meant to save those unable to flee escalating violence.

The C-130 Hercules planes, carrying Britons and other nationals, safely landed in Malta after picking up the civilians south of the eastern Libyan port of Benghazi, Defense Secretary Liam Fox said.

The rescue mission was bold because few planes have been able to fly through Libyan air space. It was not immediately clear if it was a British special forces mission, but the government has not ruled out using the SAS to evacuate Libyan oil fields and rescue trapped Britons.

The mission apparently took place with great secrecy………….. “

Even as the opposition consolidated its grip on the country’s second city, Benghazi, a top anti-Gaddafi leader, Brig. Gen. Ahmed Gatrani, said a small force comprising army defectors and rebels has already reached the outskirts of the capital. An attempt to oust Gaddafi in Tripoli on Friday was crushed by pro-regime paramilitaries and soldiers firing indiscriminately at protesters on the streets.

Seems like the people in Libya intent on getting rid of Gaddafi are working at it on their own, without outside influence. The greatest satisfaction is gained by accomplishing your goals with your own effort and not riding the coattails of others.

Our industrial base (steel, autos, clothes, etc.) moved out of the US for two reasons; number one, because of high labor costs (compared to the rest of the world) we cannot make products here that are low enough in cost for our American “Dollar Store” loving public to buy. Number two, it was because of corporate greed. Both hold just as much responsibility in the demise of our industrial base as the other and we can’t have it both ways. The reality is that we cannot have high wages for industrial labor and expect to have low priced items on the store shelves. There are laborers in the world that work for $2.50/day and are proud to get it and they make products that all of us over here enjoy because of their low costs. The real problem with the industrial situation the US now is that the Amercian consumer wants cheap stuff but yet we expect to be paid premium wages and benefits way, way beyond what the rest of the world is willing to accept to produce products. I can only laugh at the public worker unions equivocating themselves with the struggles of the real labor unions (Iron Workers, Boilermakers, Carpenters, Laborers). If the public union members met the the private union members on the street, they wouldn’t spit on them. There is no place for public service unions in this country.

Nice to see that Bookman and others actually did their homework on the misspent stimulus money.

Here’s some other fodder to chew on: Some jobs “saved or created” were faked. Case in point; a little known project (unless you’ve driven it as I have for the past 5 years) improving the I-84 corridor through the north-eastern Pennsylvania area of Wilkes-Barre / Scranton. That project was started 5 years ago, long before the ARRA was even considered. Now, most people should know that Federal road projects aren’t begun unless funding is in place to fully complete the project, so bottom-line, this project was already fully funded.

What happened after the stimulus bill was passed? Those expensive and much-ballyhooed signs touting “This project made possible by the ARRA, etc, etc, etc” began showing up on the I-84 corridor! Jobs were SAVED! Jobs were CREATED!

Jobs were FAKED!.

This administration is pathetic.

“they” are the people of Libya. I haven’t been watching the news lately, so I haven’t been keeping up with what’s going on. My word of caution when it comes to us getting engaged in any of the uprisings in the ME would be to remember the collapse of the Soviet Union.

If we’re so worried about our deficit and debt that we’re willing to cut aid to mothers and children here, can we afford to get involved in each and every uprising in the ME?

The way I see it, we are already paying for carrier task forces around the globe, don’t see much difference if they fly over the open Mediterranean (etc) or Libya…………….send in a few fighters and establish a no fly zone to protect the people vs allowing mass slaughter………

As for Frank Buckles, it seems he thoroughly enjoyed his accidental-celebrity status, and enjoyed talking about the part he played serving in the first World War. Sounds like the best possible way for this man to close that last chapter; I’m very happy for him, today, strange as that may sound.

I’m perplexed about this whole budget thing. We hear that basically, the sky is falling because of our budget. At the same time, we’re supposed to send our military over to aid uprisings in the ME. Before I get accused, I firmly believe that someone has to help protect the innocent from dictators turning their military forces against civilians. My question is, does it always have to be the USA?

We’re accomplishing what the USSR couldn’t do to us. We’re going to militarily spend ourselves into oblivion if we’re not careful.

“Personally, I think we should start charging a “protection fee”. If we’re going to be police of the world, we should earn something tangible from it.”

No argument from me on that one………whoever we “protect” absolutely should share the burden.

But, considering we allow folks to choose not to pay taxes in our own country, I won’t hold my breath on this ever happening.

Adam

No to the idea of a protection fee. Are we really going to demand a “pizzo” from countries?

Here’s a thought: Does anyone remember what happened when we “helped” in Cuba? How about when we “helped” in Afghanistan so many years ago? What about when we “helped” in Iran? We created nations of dictators.

We should STAY OUT OF IT. Our meddling leads to results we DON’T like more than it leads to results we DO like. We have no business running around the world and telling everyone how to live. The protests in these middle eastern and Africa countries show us that they can handle it on their own!
