A tribute to natural talent for the Travelin’ Music home

A lot of singers — not all, these days, but a lot — have good voices. But every once in a while you hear a gift so unique that it makes you pay attention immediately. Aretha was such a voice. Barbra Streisand was such a voice. Dinah Washington too.

And now Adele.

BTW, this one is dedicated to Miss Julie. Yesterday we marked our 32nd year as husband and wife, with many more to come, I’m sure.

I think it’s very unfair to cite his bills as evidence applicable to the GOP as a whole,

Fine. Let’s hear some prominent Goopers denounce them, then.

They don’t denounce them, sfd. But they do ignore them. Franklin’s bills — such as requiring state debts to be paid only in gold or silver — are too wacky to even deserve denuniciation.

Washington Post:

” ………… one group who took this seriously is the Secret Service. According to Ed Donovan, a Secret Service spokesman, the situation has been looked into.

“We’re aware of the incident and the appropriate steps were taken,” Donovan told me. “At this point it’s a closed matter.”

A law enforcement source confirmed that the Secret Service interviewed the constituent and determined that he or she was an “elderly person” who now regrets making a bad joke.

“In this case this was poor taste,” the source says. “The person realized that.”

Just as I stated yesterday when everyone was all worked up. That was not a criminal offense ………….. but “poor taste” ………… .

Sure, I know, the evenings are a little boring and the only heat at night comes from an electric blanket. the blanket is low maintenance runs for pennies a day.

Mornin’ or Afternoon, er’rbody…..

DIdn’t hang around to see what all was posted, but I know there were some choice cuts laid down. I can see the politics got to flying early this am. Personally, I don’t know what the stimulus saved or didn’t save. I have a gut feeling that we would be a lot better off had both TARP and the stimulus funds been put to where they could be most effective.

TARP could have been done as a credit to a bank from a taxpayer to be used exclusively for their mortgage. Let the homeowner apply the payment to their tax returns as income earned and split it over a course of years as to keep the taxpayer from being hammered by a huge tax bill at once. The outcome would have been that the banks would have still gotten the money, however the mortgages would no longer be toxic.

The stimulus should have been larger to have any kind of effect. You’re talking less than 1 trillion spending with a GDP the size of ours. That’s not enough to affect GDP or the economy at all.

Boston ……… BOSTON ! …………… not Montgomery.

BOSTON (AP) – “The owners of a Boston nightclub issued a public apology and agreed Friday to pay a $30,000 fine to settle allegations that it abruptly shut down an event after the annual Harvard-Yale football game because most of the attendees were black.

Some students said they were turned away from the November event after employees at the Cure Lounge complained that a large group of young black people in line would attract “local gangbangers.”

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley called the club staff’s behavior “the essence of racial stereotyping” and said it violated public accommodations and consumer protection laws.

“Massachusetts businesses cannot refuse to host events because of racial reasons,” Coakley said. “In this case, club staff made harmful and ill-conceived conclusions based on the simple fact that most of the guests were black.”

Let’s face it, I don’t want to be the world police anymore. What do we get with our interference? We had a civil war, it wasn’t very pretty. Each country will be better off with their own manifest destiny. Our greatest general, “A passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without adequate inducement or justification.” Damn straight!!!! By my reckoning, that’s enough to last for 17.63 years, if all were recovered. Want to give me a clue about this new oil find that only you know about?

md: I’m guessing had you and Adam been around in the 40’s, France would have been on it’s own too.

Uh no. There is no comparison here. Given what was happening I would have said to go in sooner. However, the world of today is not the world of violent actions solving every problem. The people in these countries are doing the job for themselves.

And if I was your neighbor md, and I saw a way to help prevent an invasion of your home I would definitely be there to help. Can you see the difference between an outside invasion force and a revolt from within? I wouldn’t be holding your kids down if they decided to revolt against you and throw you out of your own home. It would be weird and wrong, but it isn’t my place to go solve your family problems. If the police need to be called for domestic disturbance, I would. But beyond that only an invasion of your home would prompt me getting involved in the way you’re suggesting.

Yes, I know, I know but there was a period of time when we were isolationist….we need some time to rebuild this country, look inward….we need to be selective about who gets help and how much….If you were my neighbor, I would look after you as I know you would me….

Facts overshadowed in debate over union bill

The central part of Walker’s argument is that government workers have long escaped painful cuts that those in the private sector have had to bear. That ignores the fact that under Walker’s predecessor, Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle, state workers were forced to take furlough days that amounted to a 3 percent pay cut. State employees have also not had a raise for more than two years.

Even so, Walker has portrayed public employees as the “haves” and private workers as the “have nots,” saying government workers can afford trims to their salaries and benefits because on average they earn more than private-sector workers.

This is true as a straight average, but several national reports of public versus private pay say it’s also misleading.

In a report released in December 2010, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the average state/local government worker earns $40.10 an hour in salary and benefits. The same report found the average private worker earns $27.68 an hour in salary and benefits.

But the report was quick to note that this is not a direct comparison. Government workers tend to be better-educated than their private-sector counterparts, and government jobs are more likely to be professional or managerial as opposed to the many more manufacturing and sales jobs in the private work force.

In fact, studies that compare salaries and benefits for similar jobs between the public and private sectors show that government workers lag.

Banks Bristle at Mortgage-Loan Plan

Banks have resisted reducing loan balances in part because of concerns that it could encourage more borrowers to stop making payments in order to receive a smaller loan.

As I have so often heard, “someone” is going to be the world’s superpower.

At one time it was going to be Germany. We said no.
At one time it was going to be Russia. We said no.

Now the possibility exists for it to be China. Is that what we want?

A superpower is either benevolent or malevolent.

If it’s malevolent it desires power and works for evil in the world.
It it’s benevolent it desires freedom for others and works for good.

Which do we want ?

As I have so often heard, “someone” is going to be the world’s superpower.

Of course, nobody wants to see China as a superpower. However, if/while we are going to be the world’s superpower, we should not overreach in our desire to see democracy spread. We should only act when asked, and then only to protect the defenseless. We don’t have to put boots on the ground anytime there’s commotion inside someone’s borders. We do not want outside interference in our dispute between the GOP and organized labor, so I think we should not always stick our head into the disputes in other countries.

Facebook status recently said let’s just buy American to send a message that we want our jobs back. Take it one step further and only buy American made by Americans.

I say this is a good idea, but I had a naysayer. The argument: The world is built on trade. While I agree, I wanted her to show me American made products being made in America that are being exported, versus the stuff that doesn’t fit that description being bought by our citizens. I suspect we import more “American products” than we export. I would like to know who’s right on this but have no data either way. Any takers on a fact finding mission?

Take it one step further and only buy American made by Americans.

Whoa! That’ll be almost impossible to find!! It’s hard to even find cloth that’s manufactured in the US ( I think @@ once told me that her father-in-law once worked at a very profitable textile mill here in Georgia but that mill has since now transferred to someplace overseas).

About 2 years ago there was this documentary done, (don’t ask me by who – I watch so many!), but it was of this family who was searching for American made/owned/produced sneakers for their kids. It took them two years to find them.

I suspect we import more “American products” than we export. I would like to know who’s right on this but have no data either way. Any takers on a fact finding mission?

I’m a researcher by trade (more or less) – I’ll look for you, it might take me a couple of days but I’ll get back with you on my findings.

Impossible task you’re seeking. The jobs that have left are not coming back. The only way that happens is if you lower labor costs here to less what it costs to make and ship back now. Unless you’re seeking $2 a day wages, those jobs are not going to see US soil again.

On the other hand, if you persuade Congress to do away with all the free trade agreements and re-institute tarriffs on imports, there’s a slight chance that jobs could return here. That would only happen if it becomes cheaper to manufacture here as opposed to importing things.

jt replies—————

Is this a trick question? Which one is the U.S? Do you put her in the benevolent column or evil column?
I would personally like a superpower that didn’t lock up the highest proportion of its population in the world. Ask a young kid getting gang-raped in prison for smoking a weed how benevolent the U.S. is.

I would personally like a superpower that did not abort the highest proportion of its population in the world. Ask the millions of unborn each year……………oops ,ya can’t…. musloooom countries can ask MORE children about their respective opinions on their country’s benevolence. Who is evil?

I would like a superpower that didn’t prefer to cut Women with Infant Children(WIC) but STILL affords 500 million dollars for Military BANDS……..
I would prefer a superpower that chose NOT to steal ANY money for the above purposes.

Possibly ,…1 million Iraqians would disagree about your idea of benevolence(if that feeling is possible in the afterlife).
Ditto Vietnemese,Cambodians, Phillopinos, etc……………………………

I would really like an answer to your 10:34.

I know which it is that I want. Freedom.

From Lew Rockwell——————-Your Daily Hypocrisy Alert——————–Let us lecture Gaddafi on violence………..wait until Americans revolt—————-Goldman Sachs WILL show a profit——-

“The US is sanctions-happy. but that does not explain the freezing of Gaddafi’s and his family’s wealth, nor forbidding their traveling. His funds are stolen from the people? Of course, just like all US and other government funds. He’s a monster? Of course, just like the head of virtually every government in human history. He has yet to kill a million Iraqis like G.W. Bush. But why the sanctions now? To try to make sure that Gaddafi does not leave before the US and NATO can arrange a UN-approved invasion, protectorate, and take-over of the oil. It reminds me of the reason the US always demands unconditional surrender: to keep its wars–which are so good for the government, the Pentagon, and the arms industries–going as long as possible.”

( I think @@ once told me that her father-in-law once worked at a very profitable textile mill here in Georgia but that mill has since now transferred to someplace overseas).

I never said THAT. What I said was the mill went bankrupt. As I recall, the workers blamed it on NAFTA. The mill didn’t relocate, they just closed. Couldn’t keep up with foreign competitors.

Wasn’t profitable enough to keep my father-in-law there. He left before they closed. Opened up a pool hall and made bookcoo buckos working for himself. Hard work and long hours, six days a week. Sold pool room hamburgers…all the rage in that small town. I found them to be rather tasteless and greasy, but people still talk about his pool room hamburgers. Had some kinda secret seasoning. Like I said…never had an impact on my tongue but they’re still legendary.
