A tribute to natural talent for the Travelin’ Music home

A lot of singers — not all, these days, but a lot — have good voices. But every once in a while you hear a gift so unique that it makes you pay attention immediately. Aretha was such a voice. Barbra Streisand was such a voice. Dinah Washington too.

And now Adele.

BTW, this one is dedicated to Miss Julie. Yesterday we marked our 32nd year as husband and wife, with many more to come, I’m sure.

fer sure I thought you’d fire up some early 80’s Tom Petty in honor of Wisconsin Governor Walker…

from the chorus: “…and it wasn’t no way to carry on, it wasn’t no way to live, but he could put up with it for a little while, he was working on something big” and the final verse: “…and one said ‘I know I’ve seen his face, I wonder who he is’ and the other said, ‘he’s probably just another clown, workin’ on something big’…”

I think the most naturally strong and pure set of pipes I have ever heard in my life was when I was cycling on a South Georgia county maintained road in the area that I live in some years ago. A child, who sounded female and around 8-9 years of age, was somewhere in the back of the shack in which they lived belting out some religious song. The child was absolutely gifted. I have listened to one hell of a lot of music in my life but that child’s voice left a lifelong impression on me. A couple of years after I heard her I went back by that place and the building had collapsed and there was no one there. Talent is handed out in mysterious ways and I hope that that little girl will someday make the transition from shack dweller to artist. But I don’t hold out much hope for her.

I don’t really like the direction that any music is taking these days. The music business used to be run by musicians who knew nothing about business. Now it’s run by businessmen who know nothing about music; it’s lost its soul.
