From The St. Petersburg Times:
Sen. Greg Evers this morning postponed discussion of a controversial gun bill (SB 234) that, among other things, would allow people to carry weapons onto college campuses after the father of a killed Florida State University student showed up to oppose the bill at a Senate committee hearing.
Ashley Cowie, a 20-year-old sophomore studying interior design, was killed January 9, 2011 at a fraternity party when another student accidentally discharged a rifle, according to police. Dr. Robert Cowie described the incident during emotional testimony, telling the Senate Criminal Justice Committee that a bullet from an AK-74 went through his daughter’s chest and struck a second student. He held back tears as he said how Ashley’s identical twin sister Amy tried to perform CPR at the party to keep her alive. Amy was “looking at the whole in her sister’s chest with blood gushing from her mouth and she knew she was already dead,” Cowie said. “But she felt compelled to do something.”
Alcohol was found in the system of the shooter, 20-year-old Evan Wilhelm, police said.
“Allowing guns in an atmosphere of college parties puts everyone involved at increased and undue risk,” Cowie told senators. “Would you feel more or less at risk today if I were carrying a gun?”
Guns on college campuses — where combinations of young people, drugs and alcohol are common — are a bad idea. As Dr. Cowie notes:
“Allowing guns in an atmosphere of college parties puts everyone involved at increased and undue risk. Each young man in that fraternity that knew that weapons were present and had been brandished in the past will have to live with the guilt that they could have prevented this tragedy.”
Cowie’s testimony succeeded in delaying, but probably not preventing, passage of the bill. However, if you want evidence of the overwhelming power of the National Rifle Association, it’s hard to beat this one, also out of Florida:
“A controversial gun bill, strongly backed by the National Rifle Association and strongly opposed by doctors, passed through the Senate Criminal Justice Committee Tuesday morning.
SB 432 would not allow doctors to ask patients whether they own a gun. An offending doctor would be charged $10,000 for the first offense, at least $25,000 for the second offense, and a minimum of $100,000 for the third offense. Psychologists and psychiatrists dealing with emergency psychotic episodes would be exempt.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Greg Evers, R-Baker, passed 4-1. Sen. Paula Dockery, R-Lakeland was absent, but Sen. Andy Gardiner, R-Orlando voted as an ex-officio member. Sen. Gwen Margolis, D-Sunny Isles cast the lone dissenting vote.
Doctors turned out in force to oppose the measure, saying it hampers their ability to evaluate patient safety…
But Marian Hammer, a National Rifle Association lobbyist and former national president, said doctors are pushing an anti-gun agenda on their patients and intruding on their Second Amendment rights.
“A growing political agenda is being carried out in examination rooms,” Hammer said. “It has become about the politics of some medical doctors, and it has to stop.”
Doctors can’t even ask about gun ownership? A $10,000 fine for simply daring to raise the question?
Really now.

However, all of your points ARE POSSIBLE. I could even add some things (gun jammed) that you’re not thing of.
So What?
When a mass murder is taking place someone must do something rather than hide under their desk and wait to be killed.
Most police agencies have an “active shooter” policy that the first officer(s) on scene must WAIT for backup before entry.
Meanwhile …………. students are dying.

Highly debatable………………

When presented a plan for an invasion of the continental United States, he refused to order it. 2) Gun laws forbid civilian guns on campus. Bad civilians ignore it the day they plan to die.
There are so many large magazines out there that it doesn’t matter.

You missed Georgia, Jay.
A year or so ago, a young kid, 13 years old, living in one of the counties bordering Atlanta, stuck one of the dozen or so guns his parents into his mouth and pulled the trigger, because he was depressed.
As an aside, I bid you all adieu.
I am finally escaping this wing nut of a state, and I so happy I can practically fly.
My experience in Georgia has been thoroughly unpleasant. The only thing I regret is that the state took tens of thousands of dollars from my income, and I did not benefit from anything the state used it for. I am glad I will no longer be contributing to such a backwards political system.

Scout Zero….you can keep making wild speculative claims. The facts of actual mass attacks do not support your claims.
Again, common sense laws such as those supported by Police Chiefs and others across this country make much more sense than your macho cowboy delusions.
Every day in America, guns claim 84 lives, and wound nearly 200; every year more than 30,000 people die – over 3,000 of them children and teens – and over 70,000 are injured. The firearms death rate in the U.S. is eight times higher than in other high-income countries7 and the rate among children under 15-years-old is nearly twelve times higher in the U.S. than in 25 other industrialized countries combined.
Beginning with the Brady Law in 1993, the assault weapon ban in 1994, and other Clinton Administration policies, our nation experienced an historic decline in gun crime and violence. During the first ten years of the Brady Law gun homicides dropped 37%, while other gun crimes dropped 73%. However, during the Bush years, gun crime increased as the Administration and Congress weakened the Brady Law, allowed the assault weapons ban to expire, gave the gun industry special legal protection, and instituted other counterproductive policies.

DID YOU KNOW? States with high household gun ownership have more unintentional shooting deaths than states with low household gun ownership.
•The mortality rate from accidental shootings is 8 times higher in the four states with the most guns compared to the four states with the fewest guns (Miller, 2001, p. 481).
•For kids ages 5 to 14, the mortality rate is 14 times higher in high gun states than low gun states (Miller, 2001, p. 481).
•For kids ages 0 to 4, the mortality rate is 17 times higher in high gun states than low gun states (Miller, 2001, p. 481).
•For every age group, where there are more guns there are more accidental deaths (Miller, 2001, p. 483).
•For adults, keeping a gun in the home quadruples the risk of dying of an accidental gunshot wound (Wiebe, 2003).
•In 2007, 613 people died from an unintentional shooting. To see a breakdown of unintentional firearm deaths by age, click here.

I think you misconstrued my position. Everyone should have a defensive arsenal although the NRA is not a good orginization.(responsible for electing many democrats, and furthermore, they are behind these asinine laws about 21 years of age and up). Gun owners of America is more conducive to Liberty.
Guns keep a corrupt government at bay.
I disagree with Scout on his Muslim boogymannerisms but his principles are rock solid.
I’m out.

Scout Zero…let me explain it to you this way. There are restrictions and limitations on when and how the 4, 5 and 6th Amendments are applied. There are times you are entitled to Miranda and times you are not. Your interpretation of the 2d Amendment is not sacred, it is an interpretation. There is NO valid argument that the US Constitutions precludes any and all Federal or State Governments restrictions on gun.
As for your claims that “technical violations happen quite often” that would be an indictment of police officers generally who fail to follow rules like violating search and seizure rules, illegal wiretaps, etc. and perhaps some people pay the price because the police officers did not follow rules like being beaten after surrender, or being killed on a no-knock entry…..but your unsupported claim that it happens “quite often” is simply in error.

Bookman never lets facts get in the way of an emotional plea does he.
You are cowards when you deny someone the right to defend themselves.
Here’s an emotional story that shows what happens when you are DENIED the right to defend yourself.
The Second Amendment March organization held a rally in Little Rock on Saturday, February 27th at Barton Coliseum. Even though the rally experienced a light turnout, many speakers got a chance to espouse their views. One of these speakers particularly stood out in my eyes.
Nikki Goeser had a unique story to tell, an especially heart-rending one. Her husband, the love of her life, Ben Goeser, was gunned down in early April of last year. It happened while she and Ben were setting up mobile karaoke equipment; she was forced to watch this unfold in front of her eyes, helplessly knowing her handgun was in her car in the parking lot. She had been disarmed by Tennessee law forbidding firearms in restaurants.

AmVet, Please explain what a “Cop Killer” bullet is. I’ve never seen them in any gun store I’ve been in.
NRA only has 4 million members. That may be right but they have another 4 million + people who support them. I being in the second group. Why you ask, do I not join the NRA? If the bed wetters ever pass a law to ban guns, who do you think they will go after first? NRA members.
I’ve worked on a campus for over 25 years and can assure there are guns on campus every day.
Bosch, You claim that “guns should not be allowed on campus, period” That’s just your opinion and we know what opinions are…
Some have said that a 19 or 20 year old is too dumb to carry a gun on campus. I would like to point out their are plenty of 19 and 20 year old people defending our country.

Scout,
You are neither undercover or off-duty but you go ahead and start flailing your little rod around in a crowd the next time you see an opportunity arise and get some innocent bystander hurt as a result of your antics. Go for it.

“In 2004 the most recent year for which data is available, there were 29,569 gun deaths in the US.”
Now, post the numbers from Mexico………..I think there has been a wee bit of an increase since they passed their gun ban……………
Criminals could care less what the laws say…….why would anyone want them to know nobody else is armed??

As I recall recently people were killed at the University of Texas because people are not allowed to defend themselves. Several years the same thing happened at Texas Tech University. Three or so people died there. Why would you not let people who go through rigid federal and state background checks be allowed to defend innocent victime? Or would you prefer some crazy muslim repeast which was done in Fort Hood. How many were wounded or died there–18 or so?

It may be in your mind but all I see the unions asking for are their rights to collective bargaining whereas the NRA is in it to make sure that gun manufacturers have as big a market for profiting off of death as possible.

John Galt @2:02 PM One of the posts above mentions that a daughter carries a firearm that’s “registered.” That must not be in Georgia. There’s no legal requirement for registration of firearms here. A weapons license is required to carry a concealed weapon, but not to own said weapon.
Georgia does not require the registration of firearms owned by citizens. Georgia law actually prohibits local city/county governments from registering firearms when applying for a firearms license. However dangerous weapons (as described above) must be registered in compliance with the National Firearm Act (NFA) of 1934 and Federal Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968.
