Gingrich gets blunt reminder of his past

Newt Gingrich was speaking at the University of Pennsylvania last night and afterward took questions from the students.

Here’s the first one:

“You adamantly oppose gay rights… but you’ve also been married three times and admitted to having an affair with your current wife while you were still married to your second. As a successful politician who’s considering running for president, who would set the bar for moral conduct and be the voice of the American people, how do you reconcile this hypocritical interpretation of the religious values that you so vigorously defend?”

As Politico reports:

“Gingrich, speaking to about 800 at a speaker series event on the west Philadelphia campus, tried to cut off the question.

“I’ll bet almost everybody here can gather the thrust of your question,” he said. “I appreciate the delicacy and generosity in the way it was framed. … I hope you feel better about yourself.

“I’ve had a life which, on occasion, has had problems,” he added. “I believe in a forgiving God, and the American people will have to decide whether that’s their primary concern. If the primary concern of the American people is my past, my candidacy would be irrelevant. If the primary concern of the American people is the future… that’s a debate I’ll be happy to have with your candidate or any other candidate if I decide to run.”

The way he constructed his answer — “I’ve had a life which … has had problems” — is interesting. It’s as if he’s trying to distance himself from his own conduct. Then again, nobody ever questioned Newt’s verbal agility. His moral agility is another matter, and while I don’t think he should be hounded about it everywhere he goes, I’m glad the question was asked.

Did anyone ask about Newt’s unwillingness to sit in the back of the plane, where seats were available or if he has expressed his forgiveness of Bill Clinton’s indiscretion. So many questions, so little time. By the way, does Newt still fantasize about living the dream of a life in a US where the south won the Civil War. I bet he still has wet dreams.

I guess for Newt, the Legend In His Own Mind (and for whom, I like to remind people, NOBODY outside of his wee GA district have EVER voted), any publicity is good publicity.

When was the last time anyone even talked about him? probably when he was waving his flabby arms around, trying to get someone to notice that he was fearlessly opposing that “Ground Zero Mosque.”

Remember when that community center was the greatest threat to our Freeance evah?

The remaining charge consisted of two counts “of failure to seek legal advice” and one count of “providing the committee with information which he knew or should have known was inaccurate” concerning the use of a tax exempt college course for political purposes. On January 21, 1997, the House voted 395 to 28 to reprimand Gingrich, including a $300,000 “cost assessment” to recoup money spent on the investigation. This was the first time in the House’s history that the Speaker had been disciplined for ethics violations

Gingrich has been married three times. In 1962, he married Jackie Battley, his former high school geometry teacher, when he was 19 years old and she was 26. They had two daughters. In the spring of 1980, Gingrich left Battley after having an affair with Marianne Ginther. According to Battley, Gingrich visited her while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery to discuss the details of their divorce. Six months after it was final, Gingrich wed Ginther in 1981.

It’s so easy to yell “Hypocrite!”

There isn’t a single one of us on earth that isn’t a hypocrite.

Fact is, it’s called human nature and humans only think of themselves. It’s only modern society that has us “trying” to be civilized, thinking of others and following laws of mankind.

If we don’t continue to strive to do the right thing – regardless of our past and continued mistakes, then we will fall as a society.

So, I would ask that you all take a look at yourselves and see what faults you have.

Couple of points.

The question was predicated on “who would set the bar for moral conduct and be the voice of the American people,” and concluded with “how do you reconcile this hypocritical interpretation of the religious values that you so vigorously defend.”

Was a great opportunity to state whether or not the president should set the bar for moral conduct. If he does, the question has merit. If not, it doesn’t.

The second, hypocritical interpretation. Could have reminded the speaker “I recently converted to the Catholic faith. I was not satisfied with how I’ve conducted my life and hurt others. I feel badly about that and admit my faults. The Church provides a new life with a consistent moral framework to which I have committed. If I make moral conduct a political issue and violate the standards I’ve embraced I fully expect you to come after me and hold me accountable.”

Even having done that, though, I expect the same talking points to be endlessly recycled by those who don’t care for him. I don’t care for him, either, but I think there are much more substantive arguments to make the case.

There you go again making mountains out of anthills. Speaker Gingrich has apologized for his actions. Mr. Gingrich is committed to God these days just like me. Just like Newt, I had a drinking problem that was so bad, I fell off the road and into a Mississippi ditch. Jesus led me out of the wreckage and onto a path of righteousness. I’ve been on a crusade ever since to tell the people that you too, can find love in the eyes of God and Jesus.

I know that Speaker Gingrich has gone through a similar path and into the palm of the Lord Almighty. I love him for that.

Newt loves his country and it pains him to see it filled with debauchery, a bad economy and a weak military. Even though I’m still behind Mr. Cain for president, I like millions of other committed Republicans, welcome him into the 2012 race to discuss the pressing issues of the day.

Speaker Gingrich has moved on. What about you, Liberal Jay?

God Bless,

Obama is just an outright liar and fraud. Maybe all politicians are, but I expected better of him. My mistake.

The big bankers had thought this was dead: an administration proposal to levy a new tax on the nation’s largest financial institutions, ostensibly to help offset the cost of the Troubled Asset Relief Program.

President Barack Obama’s budget proposal to raise $30 billion over 10 years from banks with more than $50 billion in assets was smaller than its initial 2011 proposal — rejected by Congress — to raise $90 billion over 10 years. The reduced size was intended to reflect the reduced cost of TARP.

Jay, it was seem to me that William Clinton made the argument of whether the job of a President is ’setting the bar for moral conduct..in this country’ to be a moot one, don’t you think? By all accounts, he was a popular President, and even to these conservative eyes he did a nice job on several issues during his eight year run. In a perfect world, the President would be one we could look up to on all counts, in the world we live in it is simply not so. Am I stating a preference for Newt to be the net President? Certainly not, I just think his shortcomings in this area shouldn’t be treated as if they are ‘new ground’ among those who would seek the White House.

I’m neither a Catholic or a Baptist. But I believe the general thought (using terms I understand highlights the concept) is: people commit actions that separate them from God. At some point they turn from that life and embrace a life that attempts to bring their lives in harmony with God’s teachings. (various faiths have various rituals – doesn’t matter for this discussion). That conversion process does not mean, nor does Christianity teach (anywhere I’m aware of) that from then on out, no matter how fervent the desire, that the person will never, ever do, say, or think anything contrary to what they understand as a violation of what God wants for them. So they have (again, varies by church) a process of repentance – recognizing error, making amends, committing to continuing on the path they’ve accepted.

Human nature what it is, my reading of it is those faiths frame it more as a continual work in progress with stops and starts and regression and progression, rather than having it viewed as a light switch, where’s it’s dark, you flip the switch and it stays light.

I think it’s interesting to hear some of the Newt supporters say “It’s alright for Clinton to blah blah blah”, but now they want to make politicians sex lives an issue. As I recall, the right wing conservatives were looking into Clinton’s involvement in Whitewater and when that didn’t pan out they made his sex life an issue. They spent 6 out of the 8 years Clinton was in office and millions of dollars of taxpayers money on investigations trying to discredit him. What’s wrong with asking Newt where his moral standing is? He will have to get used to these questions if he decides run for office.

Newt has baggage he would like to shed but he does not have the political charisma that would allow the shedding. His problem is perception of his personal morals.

On the other side is Bill Clinton. He has more problems of the perception personal morals than Gingrich will ever have. Yet Clinton has the political charisma to rise above the perceptions.

After 2 Whitewater investigations, numerous stories of personal sexual adventures, Monica Lewinsky scandal, admission to lying in court, Clinton left office with a 66% approval rating.

Political charisma. Gingrich has none. Clinton has the market cornered.

But it seems to me your impression is one converts, goes blithely about one’s life, screws up, goes thru a formality and continues on one’s merry way. As I said, I think there’s a recognition that error will occur, there’s remorse for that error but a commitment to make amends and keep on the path.

Ever know a drug addict or an alcoholic who’s enrolled in a 12-Step? Same comparison, I think. One expects relapses. Doesn’t mean it’s shrugged off.

“If Gingrich became Catholic, I wonder if he applied for 2 annulments … anyone know?”

I don’t think it’s required. Your commitment to Catholocisms edicts dates from the date of your conversion into the church. For example, if you choose to pursue being a Priest late in life…you aren’t required to “annul” your previous sexual life, but you are required to be celebate henceforth.

You still have only presented your interpretation and wrt the bulk of Baptists or Catholics being one way or another, might I also remind you that both are merely two of the many sects of Christianity so trying to claim that there exists a majority view, aka, a bulk opinion, is a bit of a stretch in and of itself.

Newt is never going to be POTUS, so relax. However, I would love to see a Bookman or Tucker try to debate Newt one on one because he would wipe the floor with them and they know it! Geesh, when does the statute of limitations run out on infedility? I guess never if you are a conservative! As far as influence is concerned, former President Clinton has much more than Newt. To be fair, I think Clinton’s past is irrelevant to current debate as well. But it doesn’t take an astute observer to know that because of Newt’s past he will never be nominated by the Republican Party. So, IMO, to constantly bring it up is just a political cheap shot. While state (ga and az) economy falters, the pols keep our focus on the talk radio issues, like a magician who keeps transforming the paper flower in one hand so we won’t notice the next trick he’s preparing with the other. In Georgia, we should be worrying about he next trick and which lobbyist is assisting.

There is such false concern about “illegals,” but little concern about “illegal.” The requirement to do cost analysis of any bill is routinely ignored. The immigration bill that makes transporting illegal immigrants a crime will cost local governments and business millions, but who’s asking the questions? Will cab drivers and bus drivers and parkNfly drivers have to e-verify?

Then there is the “shut up and leave us alone” bill that makes it illegal to use a state or local government computer to “support or oppose” legislation. Of course elected officials and government lobbyists are excepted. Looks like legislative aids will have to hand write any messages on pending bills.

Meanwhile, in the last 8 years, the per capita income of metro Atlanta has fallen farther than any metro region in the country – more than Detroit (recent ARC report).  Who’s asking the questions while the south’s economic engine slowly slips into a big hole.

Will the empty space in downtown Buckhead is become the symbol?

Gingrich is a lying, philandering, pretender-to-the-throne of the first order. He resigned as Speaker of the House in Congress in the middle of the Clinton/Lewinsky BJ probe. Why? Because he was dipping a chippie on the side in DC while his 2nd wife (chippie #1, mind you) sat at home in Georgia. Odd, considering that Newt decided that the primary concern of the American people, when he was in charge, was the hounding of the POTUS for a consentual fling.

Newt also claims credit for balancing the budget during the Clinton Administration. Would he be willing to back the budget now? Increased taxes on the wealthiest?
