Newt Gingrich was speaking at the University of Pennsylvania last night and afterward took questions from the students.
Here’s the first one:
“You adamantly oppose gay rights… but you’ve also been married three times and admitted to having an affair with your current wife while you were still married to your second. As a successful politician who’s considering running for president, who would set the bar for moral conduct and be the voice of the American people, how do you reconcile this hypocritical interpretation of the religious values that you so vigorously defend?”
“Gingrich, speaking to about 800 at a speaker series event on the west Philadelphia campus, tried to cut off the question.
“I’ll bet almost everybody here can gather the thrust of your question,” he said. “I appreciate the delicacy and generosity in the way it was framed. … I hope you feel better about yourself.
“I’ve had a life which, on occasion, has had problems,” he added. “I believe in a forgiving God, and the American people will have to decide whether that’s their primary concern. If the primary concern of the American people is my past, my candidacy would be irrelevant. If the primary concern of the American people is the future… that’s a debate I’ll be happy to have with your candidate or any other candidate if I decide to run.”
The way he constructed his answer — “I’ve had a life which … has had problems” — is interesting. It’s as if he’s trying to distance himself from his own conduct. Then again, nobody ever questioned Newt’s verbal agility. His moral agility is another matter, and while I don’t think he should be hounded about it everywhere he goes, I’m glad the question was asked.

There you go again making mountains out of anthills. Speaker Gingrich has apologized for his actions. Mr. Gingrich is committed to God these days just like me. Just like Newt, I had a drinking problem that was so bad, I fell off the road and into a Mississippi ditch. Jesus led me out of the wreckage and onto a path of righteousness. I’ve been on a crusade ever since to tell the people that you too, can find love in the eyes of God and Jesus.
I know that Speaker Gingrich has gone through a similar path and into the palm of the Lord Almighty. I love him for that.
Newt loves his country and it pains him to see it filled with debauchery, a bad economy and a weak military. Even though I’m still behind Mr. Cain for president, I like millions of other committed Republicans, welcome him into the 2012 race to discuss the pressing issues of the day.
Speaker Gingrich has moved on. What about you, Liberal Jay?

not necessarily true … you’re advised to “go and sin no more”
confession is the opportunity to reconcile with God and with the community for your transgressions – not a free pass
Advised to. Indeed. And if you fail to follow said advice. Just remember to pop back in and confess again so you can be re-advised.

If the man doesn’t want tsa to frequent his business, he has that right as a business owner to do that. If tsa officers don’t comply and he needs police to escort them off, then obviously the tsa people are not paying enough attention. That’s what makes America so great. Obama is just an outright liar and fraud. Maybe all politicians are, but I expected better of him. My mistake.
The big bankers had thought this was dead: an administration proposal to levy a new tax on the nation’s largest financial institutions, ostensibly to help offset the cost of the Troubled Asset Relief Program.
President Barack Obama’s budget proposal to raise $30 billion over 10 years from banks with more than $50 billion in assets was smaller than its initial 2011 proposal — rejected by Congress — to raise $90 billion over 10 years. The reduced size was intended to reflect the reduced cost of TARP.

Jay, it was seem to me that William Clinton made the argument of whether the job of a President is ’setting the bar for moral conduct..in this country’ to be a moot one, don’t you think? By all accounts, he was a popular President, and even to these conservative eyes he did a nice job on several issues during his eight year run. In a perfect world, the President would be one we could look up to on all counts, in the world we live in it is simply not so. Am I stating a preference for Newt to be the net President? Certainly not, I just think his shortcomings in this area shouldn’t be treated as if they are ‘new ground’ among those who would seek the White House.

I’m neither a Catholic or a Baptist. But I believe the general thought (using terms I understand highlights the concept) is: people commit actions that separate them from God. At some point they turn from that life and embrace a life that attempts to bring their lives in harmony with God’s teachings. (various faiths have various rituals – doesn’t matter for this discussion). That conversion process does not mean, nor does Christianity teach (anywhere I’m aware of) that from then on out, no matter how fervent the desire, that the person will never, ever do, say, or think anything contrary to what they understand as a violation of what God wants for them. So they have (again, varies by church) a process of repentance – recognizing error, making amends, committing to continuing on the path they’ve accepted.
Human nature what it is, my reading of it is those faiths frame it more as a continual work in progress with stops and starts and regression and progression, rather than having it viewed as a light switch, where’s it’s dark, you flip the switch and it stays light.

I think it’s interesting to hear some of the Newt supporters say “It’s alright for Clinton to blah blah blah”, but now they want to make politicians sex lives an issue. As I recall, the right wing conservatives were looking into Clinton’s involvement in Whitewater and when that didn’t pan out they made his sex life an issue. They spent 6 out of the 8 years Clinton was in office and millions of dollars of taxpayers money on investigations trying to discredit him. What’s wrong with asking Newt where his moral standing is? He will have to get used to these questions if he decides run for office.

Newt has baggage he would like to shed but he does not have the political charisma that would allow the shedding. His problem is perception of his personal morals.
On the other side is Bill Clinton. He has more problems of the perception personal morals than Gingrich will ever have. Yet Clinton has the political charisma to rise above the perceptions.
After 2 Whitewater investigations, numerous stories of personal sexual adventures, Monica Lewinsky scandal, admission to lying in court, Clinton left office with a 66% approval rating.
Political charisma. Gingrich has none. Clinton has the market cornered.

There’s another interesting aspect to the student’s question. He states Gingrich adamantly opposes gay rights, yet has committed adultery, violating his moral beliefs.
So…. does that mean the questioner is accurately portraying Gingrich’s opposition to gay rights on some moral ground?
Does he?
Or does he oppose gay rights because of something else? Legal considerations, for instance?

I believe Newt is probably the most qualifed candidate for President we have and would PROBABLY do well. However, I teach my kids that the decisions we make in life stick with us. For most people, (democrats excluded), mistakes made early in life have a profound impact on how we can live our life later. Unfortunately, his earlier decisions show a moral character that is lacking. It’s unfortunate.
I don’t know why that should bother democrats so much though. They don’t believe we should be accountable for any of our decisions.

Jesus clearly said once you’re married, you’re married, ’til death do you part. Every day Newt lives with his 3rd wife he’s committing adultery. So what’s this about “past” sins?

Rumsfeld was on Letterman. Audience was pretty cool towards him until Letterman asked Rumsfeld to give Obama a grade. Rumsfeld paused a long time and said he was really concerned with the level of continued spending and what it was doing to our kids and grandkids. The audience liked that.

“I did not see that you refuted anything that I posted. You have simply presented your impression and clarified that we both have one, distinct as they may or may not be.”
Can you please direct me to where I addressed anything at all to you? Or are you switching monikers and got mixed up?

TnG – yeppers – I started working on my tax return on Monday (yes, I still have to file US taxes despite not having US income) – I was pleased to report that my 401k had, like lazarus, returned from the dead …

Just saw your 9:52. Thanks. Not mixed up. Caffeine deprived. Or is it Caffeine Depraved?
I see a significant difference. USinUK was more succinct than I. But it seems to me your impression is one converts, goes blithely about one’s life, screws up, goes thru a formality and continues on one’s merry way. As I said, I think there’s a recognition that error will occur, there’s remorse for that error but a commitment to make amends and keep on the path.
Ever know a drug addict or an alcoholic who’s enrolled in a 12-Step? Same comparison, I think. One expects relapses. Doesn’t mean it’s shrugged off.

US..I’m glad you recognize hyperbole…but it is rooted in truth if not a bit overstated.

Bit of angst and personal issues with Catholicism tainting your judgment of Gingrich’s motives and your explanation of Catholic doctrine?
Short answer was ‘opinion.’
Thanks.

Misty – hyperbole may be rooted in truth, but opinion /= truth.

“If Gingrich became Catholic, I wonder if he applied for 2 annulments … anyone know?”
I don’t think it’s required. Your commitment to Catholocisms edicts dates from the date of your conversion into the church. For example, if you choose to pursue being a Priest late in life…you aren’t required to “annul” your previous sexual life, but you are required to be celebate henceforth.

Paul,
You still have only presented your interpretation and wrt the bulk of Baptists or Catholics being one way or another, might I also remind you that both are merely two of the many sects of Christianity so trying to claim that there exists a majority view, aka, a bulk opinion, is a bit of a stretch in and of itself.

After 2 Whitewater investigations, numerous stories of personal sexual adventures, Monica Lewinsky scandal, admission to lying in court, Clinton left office with a 66% approval rating.
which, to our conservatives, has gotta hurt somethin’ fierce, as Billy-Jeff hisseff might say it.
