A call for armed counterprotesters to Atlanta labor rally

SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, is holding rallies at state capitols around the country to demonstrate solidarity with public employee unions in Wisconsin. The union has scheduled an event at the Gold Dome in Atlanta at 4 pm today.

This has been posted on the far-right Free Republic site, under the headline:
“Atlanta Tea Party and Many Other Groups, Facing Off the SEIU Thugs Wednesday”

“Members of the various Tea Party, 9/12, and other freedom-oriented folks in the Atlanta area will be assembling in the vicinity of Georgia State Capitol this coming Wednesday afternoon at 4 pm. We’ll be providing balance to the ravings of the passengers aboard the SEIU Thugbus, which is scheduled to vomit forth its stooges at that same place and time.

If you are within three hours drive of ATL, come join us.

Dan and others from RTC will be there, with the usual accoutrements. As always, each participant is responsible for compliance with all applicable local laws.

Rally point will be the corner of Trinity and Washington Streets in front of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Guide on the Gadsden flags. Rendezvous time no later than 3:45 pm local.

There appears to be some regulations re armed protests on the Washington Street side of the Capitol, so attendees are requested to be flexible in your attire. We will attempt (but no promises) to get some additional clarity regarding the situation and post it here prior to the show.

Take a stand.

Join us in Atlanta on Wednesday.”

The advice that “attendees are requested to be flexible in your attire” is apparently a suggestion to keep firearms concealed. The original author goes on to claim that “the lefties are idiots who are very good at running their mouths… and also very good at keeping their distance from an armed American”.

A couple of posters advised against bringing firearms to the rally, but that point of view did not seem to carry the day, as the following posts suggest:

The ones that are fake sick notes, yes I am assuming they are playing hooky(protesting). Why else would they need face sick notes?

You’re jumping around so much, I think you’ve confused yourself. The protest here has not even happened yet, so how do you know anyone here has even asked for a fake sick note?

Adam – a mob can’t take over the state capitol. It is where the government’s / people’s “business”, such as it is, needs to get done. I have no doubt that they can arrest people if they ask them to leave and they refuse to do so.

It won’t be the Israelis. Here’s a bit of interesting info on that guy…

Seems Gaddafi’s grandmother, the mother of his mother, was Jewish, according to an account broadcast on Israeli TV news last year. Two Israeli women, who claimed to be his distant relatives, said his grandmother ran away from an abusive Jewish husband, married a Muslim sheik and converted.

But under Jewish religious law, Grandma and her daughter, who is Gaddafi’s mom, are still considered Jewish and therefore, as the monthly magazine Israel Today reports in its current issue, so is Gaddafi.

If the story they told is true, the weekly said, then “Gaddafi is entitled to immigrate to Israel as a Jew under Israel’s Law of Return. Even if every other country on earth refused him entry, Israel would be obligated by its own laws to take Gaddafi in.”

It’s not always about money bro. Do a google search and look at the number of vacant seats in federal courts. The whole process is broken. No. With that logic you could just say that any search is reasonable. The Fourth says UNREASONABLE searches and seizures. The body scanner and enhanced pat downs when you refuse is unreasonable. There are other, better ways to prevent terrorism.

Also, by your logic one could easily say “if you don’t like ____ don’t do/live in _____” as an excuse to do whatever they want. For example, if I don’t like the government taking taxes from me, then I have a choice to not have a job. Makes sense right? No, it doesn’t.

Ragnar, I posted earlier in comments that I don’t think collective bargaining and in particular the right to strike are good ideas for public employees. Through politics, they already have an influence over their bosses that those in private industry do not. For example, that explains how Georgia’s nonunion teachers have a higher average pay than the union teachers in Wisconsin.

That said, I’m also opposed to the cheap union-busting tactics being employed in Wisconsin and elsewhere and see it as part of an ongoing and destructive shift of power away from working Americans.

Jay, regarding the “union busting” (or reform to collective bargaining rules, as I would call it), the reason Walker wants to do this is because it TOOK THE BIGGEST RECESSION IN US HISTORY SINCE THE GREAT DEPRESSION to (possibly) get concessions out of the PEU’s. As soon as its over, they want all their “rights” (read, leverage tools for manipulating government) still in place so they can re-instate their overly generous compensation.

The PEU’s must be shut down for the good of the country. At minimum, they don’t need the upper hand in negotiations with their employer (the government, the taxpayers, and the people).

They basically don’t give a crap the rest of us are unemployed, underemployed, have had our incomes cut by X%, being foreclosed on, whatever, just don’t ask us to have any share whatsoever in this economy collapse the rest of you are experiencing. I guess they aren’t willing to give “a few thousand more” like Jay is, eh?

Can’t speak for everyone, but this public employee has adopted a family for Christmas and supplied toys and food for several years. I’ve also donated to charities by paycheck deduction, which is ironic because nobody wants to stop that deduction, but they want to stop the union dues deduction. This public employee has also donated to corporations in the form of my 401k. I’ve shopped local businesses to help small business people as opposed to filling Wal Mart’s coffers. What else do you want me to do? Want me to come and shine your shoes or cut your grass?

Dang it…. With that description, now I gotta go take a look. :)

“Oh, and blaming unions for state deficits is absurd.” Not if you’re talking about CA.

“I posted earlier in comments that I don’t think collective bargaining and in particular the right to strike are good ideas for public employees”

And for ME, what is happening in WI points to the REAL need to HAVE them.

No. With that logic you could just say that any search is reasonable. The Fourth says UNREASONABLE searches and seizures. The body scanner and enhanced pat downs when you refuse is unreasonable. There are other, better ways to prevent terrorism.

Not any search is reasonable. You have to provide articulable facts. Trust me on this as a big part of my academics in the academy was on the 4th. You should take time out to study technology we use for screening and compare that to the technology of available weaponry. There probably are other and better ways to prevent attacks. However, the question will still be whether it’s reasonable or not? What may be reasonable to one person might not be reasonable to someone else.

For example, if I don’t like the government taking taxes from me, then I have a choice to not have a job. Makes sense right? No, it doesn’t.

Actually, it does. You can’t excape all taxes, but you could decide to retire and live off the land. The government would get on property taxes, but if you’re hunting and fishing on your own private property and growing your own vegetables, there’s not much they could do to take taxes from you.

Who wins if the unions disappear…Corporations
Who looses…..working class Americans.
Who are the Tea Party trying to protect by union busting….Corporations…hum…so, this is a “grass roots” push to help out…Corporations.
That is the net effect of their movement whether they know it or not.
As George Soros pointed out…they have been fed a steady diet of lies and false information convincing them that what they do is patriotic…when in reality…they are eating their own flesh.
Thanks to ‘talk radio’ , they have become Corporate puppets…and the sad thing is…they are too stupid to know it.

Inherent in the statement by the rightist man of action: “the lefties are idiots who are very good at running their mouths… and also very good at keeping their distance from an armed American”

shows a fundamental misunderstanding of leftist bravery and a commitment to action.

Didn’t the great leftist Bertolt Brecht say “we must be beasts in such a way that the Fascists fear for their domination” ? This is an aspect of militant leftism that is poorly understand in America in the age of Limbaugh.

“And for ME, what is happening in WI points to the REAL need to HAVE them.” – And what is that need exactly? The need to cause a disruption like this? Oh yes please more unions!!! We need more role models like the teachers and whatnot skipping out on their jobs and costing taxpayers millions!!! If the teacher can et fake sick notes, why can’t students?

getalife 12:01 – I just get to read plenty of news articles about their labor cost problems. More like BusinessWeek, Bloomberg, blah blah blah.
